Chapter no 82

The Hawthorne Legacy (The Inheritance Games, 2)

Iย woke up tied to an antique chair. The room around me was packed tight with boxes and knickknacks. The entire place smelled like it had been soaked in gasoline.

Two people stood across from me: Mellie, who looked like she might throw up any second. And Sheffield Grayson.

โ€œWhere am I?โ€ I asked, and then the memory of what had happened in the passageway came flooding back. โ€œWhereโ€™s Thea? And Rebecca?โ€

โ€œI assure you, your friends are fine.โ€ Sheffield Grayson was wearing a suit. He had me tied to a chair in what appeared to be some kind of storage unit, and he wasย wearing a suit.

He has Graysonโ€™s eyes.

โ€œI am sorry about all of this,โ€ Graysonโ€™s father said, flicking a speck off the cuff of his shirt. โ€œThe chloroform. The restraints.โ€ He paused. โ€œThe bomb.โ€

โ€œThe bomb?โ€ I repeated. The police had arrested Ricky and Skye weeks ago. They had motive, and there was evidenceโ€”there had to be, for an arrest. โ€œI donโ€™t understand.โ€

โ€œI know you donโ€™t.โ€ Graysonโ€™s father closed his eyes. โ€œI am not a bad man, Ms. Grambs. I take no joy inโ€ฆ this.โ€ He didnโ€™t specify whatย thisย was.

โ€œYou kidnapped me,โ€ I said hoarsely. โ€œIโ€™m tied to a chair.โ€ He didnโ€™t reply. โ€œYou tried to kill me.โ€

โ€œInjure you. If Iโ€™d meant for you to die, my man would have timed the explosion differently, wouldnโ€™t he?โ€

I thought of Oren telling me that if Iโ€™d been a few steps closer to the plane when the bomb had detonated, I would have died.

โ€œWhy?โ€ I said lowly.

โ€œWhy what? The bomb orโ€”โ€ Sheffield Grayson gestured to the bindings on my wrists. โ€œThe rest?โ€

โ€œAll of it.โ€ My voice shook.ย Why kidnap me? Why bring me here? What is he planning to do to me next?

โ€œBlame your father.โ€ Sheffield Grayson broke eye contact then, and for reasons I couldnโ€™t quite pinpoint, that sent a chill down my spine. โ€œYour real father. If Tobias Hawthorne the Second werenโ€™t such a coward, I wouldnโ€™t have had to go to such lengths to lure him out.โ€

My captorโ€™s voice was calm, commanding. Like he was the rational one here.

The muscles in my chest tightened, threatening to wring the air from my lungs, but I forced myself to breathe, to stay focused.ย Stay alive.ย โ€œToby,โ€ I said. โ€œYouโ€™re after Toby.โ€

โ€œThe bomb should have worked.โ€ Sheffield began cuffing the sleeves on his dress shirt, a furious motionโ€”and a familiar one. โ€œYou were rushed to the hospital. It made worldwide news. I was ready. The trap was set. All that was left to do was wait for that bastard to come to your bedside, the way any self-respecting father would. And then your lawyer had the audacity to have youย moved.โ€

To Hawthorne House, with all its security.

โ€œSo here we are,โ€ Sheffield Grayson said, โ€œas unfortunate as that may be.โ€

I tried to read between the lines of what he was saying. It had been clear from Graysonโ€™s meeting with his father that the man blamed Toby for Colinโ€™s death. My captor must have realized, somehow, that Toby was alive. Heโ€™d convinced himself that I was Tobyโ€™s daughter.

And this entire place smelled like gasoline.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€ Mellieโ€™s voice shook. โ€œIt wasnโ€™t supposed to be like this.โ€ My head pounded. My body was screaming at me to flee, but I couldnโ€™t.

I had no idea why Mellie would have helped this man kidnap meโ€”or what exactly he planned to do to me now.

โ€œToby wonโ€™t come for me,โ€ I said. Emotion welled up in my throat, and I bit it back. โ€œHe isnโ€™t my father.โ€ That hurtโ€”more than it should have. โ€œIโ€™m nothing to him.โ€

โ€œI have reason to believe heโ€™s in town. He stuck his head out of whatever hole heโ€™s hiding in long enough for me to verify that much. You are his daughter. He will come for you.โ€

It was like he wasnโ€™t hearing me. โ€œIโ€™m not his daughter.โ€ Iโ€™d wanted to

be. Iโ€™d believed that I was.

But I wasnโ€™t.

Sheffield Graysonโ€™s achingly familiar eyes settled on mine. โ€œI have a DNA test that says otherwise.โ€

I stared at him. What heโ€™d just said made no sense.ย Alisaย had done a DNA test. Ricky Grambsย wasย my father. That meant, obviously, that Toby wasnโ€™t. โ€œI donโ€™t understand.โ€ I really didnโ€™t.

I couldnโ€™t.

โ€œMellie here was quite obliging about providing a sample of your DNA. Iโ€™d acquired a sample of Tobyโ€™s from the Hawthorne Island investigation years ago.โ€ Sheffield Grayson straightened. โ€œThe match was definitive. You have his blood.โ€ Sheffield gave me a chilling smile. โ€œAnd you really should pay your help more.โ€

For the first time, I looked at Mellie, really looked at her. She wouldnโ€™t meet my eyes. Was she the one whoโ€™d knocked me out in the passageway?

Why?ย Like Eli, had she sold me out for money?

โ€œYou can go now, dear,โ€ Sheffield Grayson told her. Mellie shuffled toward the door.

Sheโ€™s leaving me here.ย Panic began slithering up my spine.

โ€œYou think heโ€™s just going to let you go?โ€ I called after her. โ€œYou think heโ€™s the kind of man who leaves loose ends?โ€ I didnโ€™t know Sheffield Grayson. I didnโ€™t even know Mellie, really, but everything in me was saying that I couldnโ€™t let her leave me here with him alone. โ€œWhat do you think Nash would say if he knew what youโ€™re doing?โ€

She hesitated, then kept walking. I was getting franticโ€”and she was getting farther away. The sound of her footsteps grew fainter.

โ€œAnd now,โ€ Sheffield Grayson told me, in the same calm, commanding voice, โ€œwe wait.โ€
