Chapter no 64

The Hawthorne Legacy (The Inheritance Games, 2)

The kiss ended as the two of us were shuffled off-camera and into an elevator. My heart was thudding. My brain was a mess. My lips feltโ€ฆ my whole body feltโ€ฆ

There were no words.

โ€œWhat the hell was that?โ€ย Alisa waited for the elevator door to close before she exploded.

โ€œThat was an ambush,โ€ Landon replied, her posh accent doing absolutely nothing to soften the words. โ€œIf you keep information from me, I canโ€™t keep you from being ambushed. Alisa, you know how I operate. If you wonโ€™t allow me to do my job, then it is, simply put, no longer my job.โ€

The elevator door opened, and Landon left.

As Max would say:ย fax.ย My eyes found their way to Graysonโ€™s, but he wouldnโ€™t even look at me. It was like heย couldnโ€™t.

โ€œI am going to ask one more time,โ€ Alisa said, her voice low. โ€œWhat the hell was that?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll get your answer,โ€ Oren told her. โ€œIn the car. We need to move out now. Iโ€™ve sent two of my men to the car and deployed the decoy. Weโ€™ll go out the back.ย Move.โ€

We made it out of the parking lot before the vultures descended. Alisa let us marinate in silence for a full minute before she spoke again. This time she didnโ€™t ask what was going on. โ€œWho knew?โ€ she demanded instead.ย โ€œWho knew?โ€

I looked down. โ€œI did.โ€

โ€œObviously.โ€ Alisa shifted her gaze to Grayson. โ€œAre you going to lie

and tell me you didnโ€™t?โ€ Then she glanced to the driverโ€™s seat. โ€œOren?โ€ My head of security didnโ€™t reply.

โ€œThis will be easier if we start at the beginning,โ€ Grayson said, sounding calmer than he should have.ย Like we never kissed at all.ย โ€œYou will recall that Avery asked you to locate an acquaintance of hers, to whom she was hoping to give economic aid?โ€

โ€œHarry.โ€ Alisaโ€™s memory was a sieveโ€”and I knew in my bones that she wouldย neverย forget what had just happened. She probably wouldnโ€™t forgive it, either.

โ€œToby,โ€ I corrected. I looked over at Grayson.ย You canโ€™t do this for me. You canโ€™t protect me the way you did back there.ย โ€œI didnโ€™t know who he was at the time,โ€ I continued, โ€œbut then I saw a picture of him in Nanโ€™s locket.โ€

โ€œYou should have told me. Immediately.โ€ Alisa was angry, furious enough that she let loose an impressive string of curse words of her ownโ€” some in English and some not. โ€œAnd youย shouldnโ€™tย have told anyone else.โ€ She shot dagger eyes at Grayson, so it was pretty clear who she was referring to.

โ€œXander already knew,โ€ Grayson said quietly. โ€œMy grandfather left him a clue.โ€

That took the wind out of Alisaโ€™s sails, but only slightly. โ€œOf course he did.โ€ She let out a breath, then took in another, and then repeated the process two or three times. โ€œIf you had told me, Avery, I might have been able to get a handle on this. We could have hired a team toโ€”โ€

โ€œFind him?โ€ I said. โ€œYour team already looked.โ€

โ€œThere are teams,โ€ Alisa told me, โ€œand there areย teams. I have a fiduciary duty to the estateโ€”to you. There is no way I could license millions to findย Harry, but to findย Toby?โ€

I dug my phone out and pulled up the picture Libby had sent me of Tobyโ€™s message. โ€œHe doesnโ€™t want to be found.โ€ I passed the phone into her hands.

โ€œStop looking.โ€ She read the words aloud, completely unimpressed. โ€œWho took this? Where was it taken? Have we verified the handwriting?โ€

I answered the questions in the order sheโ€™d asked them. โ€œLibby. New Castle. The handwriting is definitely Tobyโ€™s.โ€

Alisa rolled her eyes heavenward. โ€œYou sentย Libbyย after him?โ€

I was getting ready to tell her that there was nothing wrong with Libby,

when Grayson clarified the situation. โ€œAnd Nash.โ€

It took Alisa a full four or five seconds to recover from the fact that Nash had knownโ€”and that he was with Libby now. โ€œAndย you,โ€ she told Grayson heatedly. โ€œYou had time to look up the legal precedent, but it didnโ€™t occur to you toย talk to a lawyer?โ€

Grayson looked down at the cuff link on his right sleeve, considering his response. He must have decided on honesty, because when he lifted his gaze back up to Alisa, all he said was, โ€œWe couldnโ€™t be certain where your loyalties would lie.โ€

This time Alisa didnโ€™t look angry. She looked like she might cry. โ€œHow could you say that to me, Gray?โ€ She searched his expression for a response, and I was reminded that sheโ€™d grown up with the Hawthorne family. Sheโ€™d known Grayson and Jameson and Xander their entire lives. โ€œWhen did I become the enemy here? I have onlyย everย done what the old man wanted me to do.โ€ She spoke like those words were being physically torn out of her. โ€œDo you have any idea what thatโ€™s cost me?โ€

It was clear from the tone of her voice that she wasnโ€™t just talking about the will, or me, or anything that had happened in the wake of Tobias Hawthorneโ€™s death. Sheโ€™d called him โ€œthe old man,โ€ the same way they did, when Iโ€™d only ever heard her refer to him asย Mr. Hawthorneย orย Tobias Hawthorneย before. And when she spoke about what her loyalty to the old man had cost herโ€ฆ

Sheโ€™s talking about Nash.

โ€œI am holding this empire together by a thread.โ€ Alisa swiped angrily at her face with the back of her hand, and I realized a single tear had escaped. Her expression made it damn clear that it would be the last. โ€œAvery, I will handle this situation. I will put out this fire. I will do what needs to be done, but the next time you keep a secret from me, the next time you lie to me? I will throw you to the wolvesย myself.โ€

I believed her. โ€œThere is one more thing.โ€ I gulpedโ€”there was no way of sugarcoating this. โ€œWell, two more things. One: Toby was adopted, and his biological mother was the Laughlinsโ€™ then-teenage daughter.โ€

Alisa stared at me for a good three seconds. Then she arched an eyebrow, waiting for the other thing.

โ€œAnd two,โ€ I continued, thinking back to the moment when Grayson had stopped me from saying this on cameraโ€”and how. โ€œI have reason to believe

that Toby is, in all likelihood, my father.โ€
