Chapter no 60

The Hawthorne Legacy (The Inheritance Games, 2)

When Oren picked Eli and me up after school, Alisa was in the passenger seatโ€”and Landon was in the back, tapping furiously away on her phone.

โ€œEverything is fine,โ€ Alisa assured me, which was pretty much the opposite of comforting. โ€œWeโ€™ve got this under control, butโ€”โ€

โ€œBut what?โ€ I glanced over at Landon. โ€œWhatโ€™s she doing here?โ€

There was a beat of silence. That was all it took for Alisa to craft her reply. โ€œSkye and your father are offering themselves as an interview package to the highest bidder.โ€ Alisa expelled an aggrieved breath. โ€œIf we want to quash the story, Landon is going to have to make it worth the high bidderโ€™s while to bury it.โ€

Iโ€™d had enough on my mind these past few days that Iโ€™d barely thought about Ricky Grambs. I tried to read between the lines of Alisaโ€™s statement. โ€œAre you saying youโ€™re going to pay off whoever buys their interview?โ€

Landon finally looked up from her phone. โ€œYes and no,โ€ she told me before turning her attention to Alisa. โ€œMonica thinks she can make the network pony up, but weโ€™re going to have to guarantee them Averyย andย at least one Hawthorne.โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™ll pay for exclusivity from Skye?โ€ Alisa asked. โ€œComplete with an NDA preventing Skye and Grambs from taking their story elsewhere?โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™ll pay for it. Theyโ€™ll bury it.โ€ Landon pinched the bridge of her nose, like she could feel a migraine coming on. โ€œBut the latest theyโ€™ll agree to for a sit-down with Avery is tomorrow night.โ€

โ€œGood lord.โ€ Alisa shook her head. โ€œCan she handle it?โ€ โ€œIโ€™m sitting right here,โ€ I pointed out.

โ€œSheโ€™ll have to.โ€ Landon spoke over me. โ€œBut weโ€™re going to have to crunch.โ€

โ€œCrunchย what, exactly?โ€ I asked. Everyone in the car ignored the question.

โ€œAveryโ€™s interview is nonexclusive,โ€ Alisa told Landon, โ€œand they have a deal.โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™ll want an embargo on other interviews for at least a month.โ€ Landonโ€™s reply was automatic.

โ€œThree weeks,โ€ Alisa countered. โ€œAnd it applies only to Avery, not any of her surrogates.โ€

Since when did I have surrogates? I wasnโ€™t running for president here. โ€œWhich Hawthorne am I offering as part of the package?โ€ Landon

asked, all business.

My brain was struggling to keep up, but I was pretty sure that what was happening here was that we were giving my first interview to whoever bought Skyeโ€™s, under the conditions that the interview with Skye and Ricky never aired and whoever bought it contractually prevented the duo from talking to anyone else.

โ€œWhy do we even care aboutย theirย interview?โ€ I said.

โ€œWe care,โ€ Alisa said emphatically. Then she turned back to Landon. โ€œAnd you can tell Monica that weโ€™ll guarantee a sit-down Wednesday evening with Avery andโ€ฆ Grayson.
