Chapter no 52

The Hawthorne Legacy (The Inheritance Games, 2)

Alice Hawthorneโ€™s wedding ring wasnโ€™t what Iโ€™d pictured. The diamond, singular, was small. The bands, which had been soldered together, were thin and made of gold. Iโ€™d been expecting platinum and a stone the size of my knuckle, but this wasnโ€™t ostentatious.

It looked like it had cost a few hundred dollars at most.

โ€œYou should take it to her.โ€ Jameson looked from the ring to my face. โ€œAlone, Heiress. Zara clearly sees this as an issue between her and you.โ€

I saw something inside the band then.ย 8-3-75.ย A date, I thought.ย August third, nineteen seventy-five. Their wedding date?

โ€œAvery?โ€ Grayson must have seen something on my face. โ€œIs everything okay?โ€

I took my phone out and snapped a picture of the inside of the ring. โ€œTime to make a trade.โ€

โ€œNan justโ€ฆ gave it to you?โ€ Zara somehow managed not to choke on those words. โ€œLegally. She transferred its ownership toย you.โ€

I got the feeling that this could go south very quickly, so I reiterated why I was here. โ€œNan gave me this ring to tradeย youย for your fatherโ€™s ring.โ€

Zaraโ€™s eyes closed. I wondered what she was thinking, what she wasย remembering. Finally, Zara reached for a delicate chain around her neck and pulled a thick silver band out from underneath her lacy dress-shirt. She closed her fist over it, then opened her eyes. โ€œMy fatherโ€™s ring,โ€ she agreed hoarsely, โ€œin exchange for my motherโ€™s.โ€

Her hands shook as she undid the clasp on the chain. I handed her Alice Hawthorneโ€™s ring, and she handed me the old manโ€™s. Unable to resist the

impulse, I turned the ring in my hand, looking for an inscription, and there it wasโ€”another date.ย 9-7-48.

โ€œHis date of birth?โ€ I asked, taking a stab in the dark.

Zara didnโ€™t have to glance down at the ring to know what I was talking about. This was the only thing her father had left her. I had no doubt sheโ€™d been over it with a fine-tooth comb.

โ€œNo,โ€ Zara said stiffly. โ€œYour motherโ€™s?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ She brushed off the question in a way that distinctly discouraged follow-up questions, but I had to ask at least one.

โ€œWhat about August third, nineteen-seventy-five,โ€ I said. โ€œWas that the day they got married?โ€

โ€œNo, it was not,โ€ Zara replied. โ€œNow, if you could please take that ring and see yourself out, I would greatly appreciate it.โ€

I walked toward the door, then hesitated. โ€œDidnโ€™t you wonder?โ€ I asked Zara. โ€œAbout the inscription?โ€

Silence. I started to think she had no intention of replying, but just as my hand closed around the doorknob, Zara surprised me. โ€œI did not have to wonder,โ€ she said tersely.

I glanced back at her.

Zara shook her head, her grip on her motherโ€™s wedding ring iron-tight. โ€œItโ€™s a code, obviously. One of his little games. Iโ€™m supposed to decode it. Follow the clue wherever it leads.โ€

โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you?โ€ If sheโ€™d known that there was meaning to this bequest, why hadnโ€™t she played?

โ€œBecause I donโ€™tย wantย to know what else my father had to say.โ€ Zara pressed her lips together, and something about her expression made her look decades younger. Vulnerable. โ€œI was never enough for him. Toby was his favorite, then Skye. I was last, no matter what I did. That was never going to change. He left his fortune to a total stranger rather than leaving it to me. What else could I possibly need to know?โ€

Zara didnโ€™t seem so formidable now.

โ€œNan said to tell you something.โ€ I cleared my throat. โ€œShe said to tell you that โ€˜we all do what we have to do to survive.โ€™โ€

Zara let out a low, dry laugh. โ€œThat sounds like her.โ€ She paused. โ€œI was never her favorite, either.โ€

The tree is poison, Toby had written.ย Donโ€™t you see? It poisoned S and Z and me.

โ€œYour father left Skye a clue, too.โ€ I didnโ€™t know why I was telling her this. I shouldnโ€™t have been telling her this. Grayson had been very clear in his warning: Zara and Skye couldnโ€™t find out that Toby was alive.

โ€œAt True North, I assume?โ€ Zara really was Hawthorne. Sheโ€™d seen the meaning in the will. She just hadnโ€™t cared.ย No, I thought.ย She cared. She just wasnโ€™t going to give him the satisfaction of playing.

โ€œHe left Skye a picture,โ€ I said softly. โ€œOf you and her and a guy named Jake Nash.โ€

Zara sucked in a breath. She looked like Iโ€™d slapped her. โ€œNow would be a good time for you to leave,โ€ she said.

On the way out, I placed her fatherโ€™s wedding ring on an end table. Iโ€™d committed the date to memory. Iโ€™d gotten what I needed.

There was no reason for me to take this from her, too.
