Chapter no 37

The Hawthorne Legacy (The Inheritance Games, 2)

To my daughter Skye Hawthorne, I leave my compass, may she always know true north.โ€ย The next morning, I paced in front of Max, unable to contain myself. โ€œThe part about the compass and true north was in both of Tobias Hawthorneโ€™s wills. The older one was written twenty years ago. The clues in that will couldnโ€™t have been meant for the Hawthorne grandsonsโ€” not originally.โ€ If there was a connection between that line in the will and the home Iโ€™d inherited in Colorado, that message had been meant explicitly for Skye. โ€œThis game was for Tobias Hawthorneโ€™s daughters.โ€

โ€œDaughters, plural?โ€ Max inquired.

โ€œThe old man left Zara a bequest, too.โ€ My mind raced as I tried to recall the exact wording.ย โ€œTo my daughter Zara, I leave my wedding ring, may she love as wholly and steadfastly as I loved her mother.โ€

What if that was a clue, too?

โ€œOne piece of the puzzle is at True North,โ€ I said. โ€œAnd if thereโ€™s another one, it must have something to do with that ring.โ€

โ€œSo,โ€ Max said gamely, โ€œfirst, we go to Colorado, and then we steal ourselves a ring.โ€

It was tempting. I wanted to see True North. I wanted to go there. I wanted to experience even a fraction of what that binder told me my new world had to offer. โ€œI canโ€™t,โ€ I said, frustrated. โ€œI canโ€™t go anywhere. I have to stay here for a year to inherit.โ€

โ€œYou go to school,โ€ Max pointed out. โ€œSo, obviously, you donโ€™t have to stay holed up at Hawthorne House twenty-four hours a day.โ€ She grinned. โ€œAvery, my billionaire friend, how long do you think it would take us to fly by private jet to Colorado?โ€

I called Alisa, and she arrived within the hour.

โ€œWhen the will says that I have to live in Hawthorne House for a year, what does that mean exactly? What constitutesย livingย at Hawthorne House?โ€

โ€œWhy do you ask?โ€ Alisa replied, blinking.

โ€œMax and I were looking at the binder you gave me. At all of those vacations homes.โ€

โ€œAbsolutely not.โ€ Oren spoke from the doorway. โ€œItโ€™s too risky.โ€

โ€œI agree,โ€ Alisa said firmly. โ€œBut since I have a professional obligation to answer your question: The willโ€™s appendix makes it clear that you may spend no more than three nights per month away from Hawthorne House.โ€

โ€œSo weย couldย go to Colorado.โ€ Max was delighted. โ€œOut of the question,โ€ Oren told her.

โ€œGiven whatโ€™s at stake here, I concur.โ€ Alisa gave me the Alisa Look to end all Alisa Looks. โ€œWhat if circumstances prevented you from returning on time?โ€

โ€œI have school on Monday,โ€ I argued. โ€œTodayโ€™s Saturday. Iโ€™d only be gone for one night. That gives us plenty of leeway.โ€

โ€œWhat if thereโ€™s a storm?โ€ Alisa countered. โ€œWhat if youโ€™re injured?

One thing goes wrong, and you lose everything.โ€ โ€œSo do you.โ€

I looked back to the doorway and saw a stranger standing there. A brown-haired woman wearing khaki slacks and a simple white blouse. Belatedly, I recognized her face.ย โ€œLibby?โ€ย My sister had dyed her hair a sedate medium brown. I hadnโ€™t seen her with a natural human hair color sinceโ€ฆย ever. โ€œIs that a French braid?โ€ I asked, horrified. โ€œWhat happened?โ€

Libby rolled her eyes. โ€œYou make it sound like I was kidnapped and forcibly braided.โ€

โ€œWere you?โ€ I asked, only half joking.

Libby turned back to Alisa. โ€œYou were just telling my sister that you canโ€™tย allowย her to do something?โ€

โ€œGo to Colorado,โ€ Max clarified. โ€œAvery owns a house there, but her keepers here think traveling is too big a risk.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not really their decision, is it?โ€ Libby looked down at the ground, but her voice was steady. โ€œUntil Averyโ€™s emancipated,ย Iย am her guardian.โ€

โ€œAnd I control her assets,โ€ Alisa replied. โ€œIncluding the planes.โ€ I cut a glance at Max. โ€œI guess we could fly commercial.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Alisa and Oren responded in unison.

โ€œDid it ever occur to you that Avery needs a break?โ€ Libby stuck out her chin. โ€œFromโ€ฆโ€ Her voice caught in her throat. โ€œAll of this?โ€

I felt a stab of guilt, because I wasnโ€™t overwhelmed byย all of this. I was doing fine here.ย But Libby isnโ€™t.ย I could hear it in her tone. When Iโ€™d inherited, she lost everything. Her job. Her friends. Her freedom to walk outside without a bodyguard. โ€œLibbyโ€”โ€

She didnโ€™t let me get more than her name out of my mouth. โ€œYou were right about Ricky, Ave.โ€ She shook her head. โ€œAnd Skye. You were right, and I was just too stupid to see it.โ€

โ€œYou arenโ€™t stupid,โ€ I said fiercely.

Libby fingered the end of her French braid. โ€œSkye Hawthorne asked me who I thought a judge would think is more respectable: the new and improved Ricky or me.โ€

That was why sheโ€™d dyed her hair. That was why she was dressed the way she was. โ€œYou didnโ€™t have to do this,โ€ I said. โ€œYou donโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Libby cut in softly. โ€œI do. Youโ€™re my sister. Taking care of you isย myย job.โ€ Libby turned back to Alisa, her eyes blazing. โ€œAnd ifย myย sister needs a break, you and that billion-dollar law firm can damn well find a way to give her one.โ€
