Chapter no 34

The Hawthorne Legacy (The Inheritance Games, 2)

Iย made it outside to Libby and found Nash already there. โ€œHey now, darlinโ€™,โ€ he murmured. โ€œCome back inside. You didnโ€™t do anything wrong.โ€

Libby lifted her head up and looked past him to me. โ€œSorry, Ave. When I saw her go down, I went on autopilot.โ€ Before our lives had gotten turned upside down, Libby had been an orderly at a nursing home. She grimaced. โ€œThis is exactly what Alisa meant when she told me not to cause a scene tonight.โ€

โ€œShe told you what now?โ€ Nash said, his voice low and dangerous. Libby shrugged.

โ€œYou had no way of knowing that Rebeccaโ€™s mom was going to explode like that,โ€ I told Libby, then I cut a glance toward Nash, who sighed.

โ€œSheโ€™s the Laughlinsโ€™ daughter. Grew up on the estate. It was before my timeโ€”sheโ€™s got about fifteen years on Skye. From what Iโ€™ve gathered, the relationship between Mr. and Mrs. L and their daughter has always been a bit tense. After they lost Emilyโ€ฆโ€ Nash shook his head. โ€œShe blamed my family.โ€

Both Jameson and Grayson had been there the night Emily died.

โ€œShe said all her babies die,โ€ I murmured. Belatedly, I processed the fact that sheโ€™d been looking right at Rebeccaโ€”her living daughterโ€”when sheโ€™d said it.

โ€œMiscarriages.โ€ Nash said quietly. โ€œShe and her husband were older when they started trying for kids. Mrs. Laughlin mentioned once that theyโ€™d lost multiple babies before they had Emily.โ€

If I thought about any of this for too long, I was going to start feeling even sorrier for Rebecca Laughlin. โ€œAre you okay?โ€ I asked Libby instead.

She nodded and looked toward Nash. โ€œCould you give us a minute?โ€

With one last look at my sister, Nash sauntered off, and Libby turned back to me. โ€œAvery, what did you say to Dad earlier?โ€

I wasnโ€™t going to have this conversation with her. โ€œNothing.โ€

โ€œI get it,โ€ Libby told me. โ€œYou hate him, and you have every right to.

And, yes, the thing with Skye is kind of weird, butโ€”โ€

โ€œWeird,โ€ I repeated. โ€œLibby, she tried to have me killed!โ€ It took me a full three seconds to realize what Iโ€™d done.

Libby stared at me. โ€œWhat? When?โ€ย Libby knew Skye moved outโ€”but she didnโ€™t know why.ย โ€œHave you told the police?โ€ she demanded.

โ€œItโ€™s complicated,โ€ I hedged. I was trying to figure out how to explain my promise to Grayson, but Libby didnโ€™t give me more than a second.

โ€œAnd Iโ€™m not,โ€ she said quietly, her chin jutting out. At first, I wasnโ€™t sure what she was saying. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not complicated,โ€ Libby clarified. โ€œThatโ€™s what you think. Itโ€™s what youโ€™ve always thought. Iโ€™m too optimistic and too trusting. I never went to college. I donโ€™t think the way you think. I give people too many chances. Iโ€™m naiveโ€”โ€

โ€œWhere is this coming from?โ€ I asked.

Blue hair fell into Libbyโ€™s face as she looked down. โ€œForget it,โ€ she said. โ€œI signed the emancipation papers. Pretty soon, you officially wonโ€™t have to listen to me. Or Dad. Or anyone.โ€ Her voice caught. โ€œThatโ€™s what you want, right?โ€

I hadnโ€™tย askedย to be emancipated. That was all Alisa, but I recognized that it was probably the right move. โ€œLib, itโ€™s not like that.โ€ Before I could say anything else, my phone rang.

It was Jameson.

I looked back up from the screen to Libby. โ€œI have to take this,โ€ I told her. โ€œButโ€ฆโ€

Libby just shook her head. โ€œYou do what you have to do, Aveโ€”and Iโ€™ll try not to cause any more scenes.โ€
