Chapter no 80 – GIGI

The Grandest Game

All patched up, darlinโ€™.โ€

Gigi had spent every second that had passed since sheโ€™d left the dock telling herself that she was going to come clean. Maybe not to Nash, who, like Grayson, had a protective streak a mile wide. And probably not to Jameson, who was unpredictable, but to Averyโ€”or maybe Xander.

โ€œThanks,โ€ Gigi told Nash brightly. Maybe a littleย tooย brightly. But before he could proceed with a Southern Inquisition, there was a knock on the door to her room.

Not my room for much longer.ย A ball of emotion rose in Gigiโ€™s throat as Nash answered the door.

Brady stepped into the room. Heโ€™d changed back into his regular clothes, but he was still holding the sword. Looking back, Gigi realized that heโ€™d probably been guarding it in his own, subtle Brady way the whole night. It doubtlessly had a use in the next phase of the gameโ€”if thereย wasย a game once Gigi spilled the beans.

I know youโ€™re out there. No, sunshine, you donโ€™t.

โ€œHoller if you need anything,โ€ Nash told Gigi. He palmed his cowboy hat and gave Brady a long, disturbingly neutral look, then turned and sauntered out of the room.

Alone with Brady, Gigi developed an intense fascination with her own cuticles. She felt the mattress dip as he sat down beside her on the bed.

โ€œYouโ€™re still in the game.โ€ Gigi still couldnโ€™t bring herself to look at him. She reached back to take the hair tie Brady had given her out of her hair, then handed it back to him. A muscle in her throat tightened. โ€œWhereโ€™s Knox?โ€

โ€œWhy,โ€ Brady said, โ€œare you asking me about Knox?โ€

Gigi thought about Knoxโ€™s scarโ€”but that wasnโ€™t her story to tell. โ€œYou lied to me, Brady.โ€

โ€œTechnically, I lied to him, and you overheard.โ€ Gigi shook her head.ย โ€œDonโ€™t.โ€

โ€œI would tell a thousand lies,โ€ Brady swore, as intense as sheโ€™d ever seen him, โ€œto get her back.โ€

Her.ย Knox had been right. It was always Calla with Brady. โ€œWinning this game wonโ€™t bring Calla Thorp back,โ€ Gigi said.

Brady was quiet for a long moment. โ€œWhat if I told you it would?โ€

What?ย Gigi searched his eyes. โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

Brady didnโ€™t answer the question. โ€œYou could have told Nash about the bug just now, but I donโ€™t think you did. You could have had the whole game called off. You didnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œI havenโ€™t told anyoneย yet,โ€ Gigi corrected. Brady didnโ€™t even know the full extent of the secret she was keeping.

I know youโ€™re out there. No, sunshine, you donโ€™t.

Brady reached over to take Gigiโ€™s hand in his. โ€œI am asking you to let this run its course.โ€

Gigi felt the warmth of Bradyโ€™s touch. Heย wantedย her to feel it.

She pulled her hand back. โ€œWas any of it real?โ€ she asked, her voice breaking. The way heโ€™d touched her. The way heโ€™d looked at her. Chaos theory.

โ€œAll kinds of things can happen,โ€ Brady said quietly, โ€œin a closed system.โ€

โ€œNothing in, nothing out,โ€ Gigi said.ย A locked room. An island.

โ€œI wasnโ€™t lying,โ€ Brady said, his voice catching a little, โ€œwhen I told you that my brain likes A Lot.โ€

Gigi tried madly to look anywhere but at his face, and her gaze fell on the sword. โ€œIf I asked you to give that to me, would you?โ€

His reply was gentle. โ€œWhat use would you have for it now, Gigi?โ€

She was out of the game, and he wasnโ€™t. โ€œThatโ€™s what I thought.โ€ Gigi summoned up her best and brightest smile, because thisย hurt. โ€œYou wanted me to feel something for you. You wanted me to trust you and like you. Maybe you thought you could use me in the next phase of the game, if our team did make it out by dawn.โ€ Gigi was still smiling. She couldnโ€™t stop. She couldnโ€™t let herself stop. โ€œYou played me, Brady.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m playing like her life depends on it.โ€ Brady leaned forward, and suddenly, Gigi couldnโ€™t see anything but his face. โ€œJuliet? I need this game to go on.โ€

That was the second time heโ€™d called herย Juliet. โ€œI never asked,โ€ Gigi realized. โ€œHow do you know my real name?โ€

Brady didnโ€™t reply.

Was any of it real?ย sheโ€™d asked him.

All kinds of things can happen in a closed system.

But that system wasnโ€™t really closed, was it? And for the first time, a possibility occurred to Gigiโ€”not just a possibility. Aย likelihood.

โ€œYou know, itโ€™s funny.โ€ Gigi looked Brady right in the eyes. โ€œYou told me about Knoxโ€™s sponsor, but you never mentioned yours.โ€

Brady didnโ€™t deny it.

Gigi thought about Knox saying that the Thorps werenโ€™t the only game in town, saying that Orion Thorp wasnโ€™t the only member of his family who liked to play. She thought about Brady playing the Grandest Game like Callaโ€™s life depended on it. About Knox and his scar and the way heโ€™d said that Calla hadย left.

The next thing Gigi knew, Brady was standing to go, and Xander was in the doorway.

โ€œFor what itโ€™s worth,โ€ Brady told Gigi, โ€œin the last six years, there hasnโ€™t been anyone who could make me forget Calla. There hasnโ€™t been a singleย moment.โ€ Brady almost smiled at her. โ€œThere were moments with you.โ€

Xander waited until Brady had left, then shut the door and turned back to Gigi with one brow raised to ridiculous heights. โ€œIโ€™m sensing a story.โ€

Gigi knew that she had to tell Xanderโ€”about the bug, the knife, Code Name Mimosas, all of it. She wasย goingย to tell him. But somehow, what came out instead was: โ€œI lost. No Viking epics for me.โ€

โ€œSays who?โ€ Xander crossed the room and sat down beside her. โ€œI just placed an order for a very fetching Viking helmet to don during my

recitation of said epics.โ€

โ€œLike you donโ€™t already have a Viking helmet?โ€ Gigi replied.

โ€œIf you want to getย technical, I just placed an order for a backup Viking helmet for my backup Viking helmet,โ€ Xander admitted. โ€œThis one is quite large.โ€

Gigi didnโ€™t even have toย tryย to smile with Xander.

He nudged her shoulder playfully. “Just because you didnโ€™t win,” Xander said, producing a scone seemingly out of nowhere and handing it to Gigi, “doesnโ€™t mean the journey was anything less than epic. I’ve written Viking sagas for less.”

Tell him, Gigi thought, with the words on the tip of her tongue: I found a bag hidden in the brush, and inside it, there was a wetsuit, an oxygen tank, a necklace that wasnโ€™t just a necklace, and a knife.

“I once built a Rube Goldberg machine with the sole purpose of smacking my own magnificent buttocks,” Xander said, meeting Gigiโ€™s gaze. “I tell you this to say that I am a man of many talentsโ€”one of which is listening. I am a very good listener.”

The only reasonable thing I could possibly do right now is tell him.

What did it matter that Brady had asked her not to?

What did it matter that sheโ€™d spent countless nights staring into the darkness, waiting for Very Bad News to reappear?

What did it matter that heโ€™d called her sunshine? “I have until noon, right?” Gigi asked.

Xander grinned. “For the ease of my future compositions, please tell me that whatever you have planned rhymes with Valhalla or cheesesteak.”

Gigi gave Xander a look. “Youโ€™re not going to ask what Iโ€™m up to?”

“Like I said, Iโ€™m a man of many talents.” Xander slung an arm around her. “Among them, I give excellent platonic snuggles, and I know when not to ask.”
