Chapter no 74 – ROHAN

The Grandest Game

The path down to the shore was rocky and uneven. Moonlight was in short supply. Victory was sweet, the way it always was for Rohan.

Down below, a light on the dock came on.

โ€œThereโ€™s no one there.โ€ Savannah came to a standstill. They were still closer to the house than the dock, the path lit by delicate strings of lights. โ€œNo Hawthornes. No Hawthorne heiress.โ€

โ€œIโ€™d wager the game makers will make their appearance just before dawn.โ€ By Rohanโ€™s calculations, they were nearing twilight. โ€œWeโ€™ll see if either of the other teams makes it out in time. For now, itโ€™s just us.โ€

Just Rohan and Savannah Grayson.

She stopped suddenly and turned back toward him. โ€œTruth or dare.โ€ Rohan had not expected that. โ€œPardon me?โ€

โ€œTruth or dare, Rohan?โ€

Something in Savannahโ€™s tone reminded Rohan of the brush gliding through her hair, the slice of the knife, the shattering rose, his hands and hers,ย bit by bit by bit.

And then Rohan remindedย himselfย that Savannah Grayson liked fighting dirty. โ€œIf I pick dare, are you going to dare me to give you the longsword?โ€ย Nice try, love.

Savannah was undeterred. โ€œTruth or dare, British?โ€

โ€œTruth.โ€ Rohan knew the game she was playing. He knew exactly what she was going to ask.

โ€œWhatโ€™s the name of the organization you work for?โ€

โ€œTechnically, at the moment, I donโ€™t have an employer. Iโ€™m on a sabbatical of sorts.โ€ Rohan could have left it there.ย The Devilโ€™s Mercyย was not a name spoken lightlyโ€”not by Rohan, not by anyone who valued their life or livelihood. Not even here, in the dead of night, alone. And yetโ€ฆ Rohan hadnโ€™t gotten to where he was by avoiding risk.

When he won the Grandest Game, when he took what was rightfully his, when he became the Proprietor and wore the crownโ€ฆย I willย beย the Devilโ€™s Mercy.ย That made its secrets his to tell or withhold.

Rohan gave Savannah Grayson her answerโ€”a true one, a partial one. โ€œThe Mercy.โ€ Rohan felt the words on his lips as much as he felt Savannahโ€™s presence beside him in the darkโ€”though it wasnโ€™t quite so dark anymore.

Hello, twilight. โ€œTruth or dare, Savannah?โ€

She was too proud to back down now. โ€œTruth.โ€

Rohan wondered what sheโ€™d thought he was going to dare her to do. He took a single step toward her. โ€œWhat are you after, Savvy?โ€

Heโ€™d asked versions of that question before, but every instinct he had said that this time, he might get the real answer, the mystery of Savannah Grayson, solved.

โ€œIf youโ€™re not playing for the money,โ€ Rohan murmured, โ€œwhat are you playing for?โ€

Savannah stalked slowly toward him, then stopped, leaning forward, her lips so close to Rohanโ€™s that he could taste the kiss that wasnโ€™t as she gave him his due.

An answer, partial, but true. One word. โ€œRevenge.โ€
