Chapter no 46 – GIGI

The Grandest Game

Images flashed rapid-fire through Gigiโ€™s brain.ย The wetsuit. The oxygen tank. The necklace. The knife.ย She thought back to her altercation with Knox over the bagโ€”and then to what Brady had said about sponsors.

They hire players, stack the deck where they can, bet on the outcome.

What if the bag Gigi had foundย wasnโ€™tย a part of the game? Not a sanctioned one, anyway. Knox hadnโ€™t brought it back to the house, where Avery and the Hawthornes might have seen it.

What if that bag and its contents were Knoxโ€™s so-called sponsorโ€™s way ofย stacking the deck? What if that was what heโ€™d meant when heโ€™d said it wasย his? What if Knox had known where the bag was stashed the whole time, and it was just his bad luck that sheโ€™d happened to stumble upon it?

You cheating cheater who cheats.ย Gigi stormed back to the chamber to find Brady and Knox avoiding eye contact with each other. For all she knew, they hadnโ€™t said a word while she was gone.

Brady was holding the sword again.

โ€œFamily therapy,โ€ Gigi told them. โ€œOr, I guess, found-family therapy.

Think about it.โ€

If either of them heard the deadly tone in her voice, they gave no sign of

it.

โ€œIn unrelated news: You have a lot of explaining to do, Shady Brows.โ€

Gigi held the listening device up between her middle finger and thumb. โ€œI found this delightful little bug in my necklaceโ€”the necklace that was in the

bag with the knife and all the rest of it.โ€ She jabbed the Pointy Finger of Accusation at Knox. โ€œThe bag thatย youย stole and didnโ€™t bring back to this house, because you didnโ€™t want anyone to see it.โ€

โ€œBecause I didnโ€™t want anyone toย stealย it.โ€ Knoxโ€™s correction was only somewhat barbed.

Gigi turned toward Brady. โ€œTell me more about sponsors. Aboutย Knoxโ€™s sponsor.โ€

Bradyโ€™s reply and his expression were measured. โ€œThe Thorp family owns a third of the state of Louisianaโ€”more than that if you count the illegitimate branches of the family.โ€ Brady shifted his steady gaze from Gigi to Knox. โ€œKnoxโ€™s sponsor is a man named Orion Thorp.โ€

โ€œThis is asinine.โ€ Knoxโ€™s tone wasnโ€™t measured at all. โ€œNeither my villainous sponsor nor I had anything to do with that bag.โ€ He met Bradyโ€™s gaze. โ€œAm I telling the truth, Daniels?โ€

There was a long silence. โ€œHe is,โ€ Brady said finally. โ€œTelling the truth.โ€ Gigi wanted to argue, but she couldnโ€™t. She believed that Brady knew Knox well enough to know if Knox was lying, and she believed Brady

when he said that Knox wasnโ€™t.

She couldnโ€™tย notย believe Brady.

So she changed course. โ€œI know youโ€™re out there.โ€ She spoke directly into the bug. โ€œI know youโ€™re listening.โ€

It was something sheโ€™d gotten into the habit of saying a year and a half earlierโ€”on rooftops, in parking lots, every single evening, looking out into the night.ย I know youโ€™re out there.ย Because if there wasnโ€™t anyone there, then no one would ever know, but if thereย wasย someone watching her, following her, then Gigi wanted that person to know that he couldnโ€™t hide from her, no matter how much he cloaked himself in shadow.

In her defense, sheโ€™d been followed before. By a professional. โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ Knox was bewilderedโ€”and pissed.

Gigi ignored him and tried again. โ€œI know youโ€™re out there.โ€ When there was no replyโ€”the device probably doesnโ€™t even work both waysโ€”she turned to Brady. โ€œYou said there were rich families, plural, who had taken an interest in the Grandest Game.โ€

Brady gave a little nod. โ€œI believe most of the interested parties were contemporaries or rivals of Tobias Hawthorne.โ€

Rivals?ย That felt a bitโ€ฆ ominous.

โ€œWhat makes you so sure,โ€ Knox asked Gigi, โ€œthat the thing in your hand is a bug? And that itโ€™s not a part of the game?โ€

โ€œI live a life of stealth and crime,โ€ Gigi replied pertly. โ€œI know a bug when I see one, and I am spontaneouslyโ€”but also incrediblyโ€”sure that the game makers didnโ€™t hide a bag on the island containing a whole slew of capital-O Objects.โ€

It was so obvious now that sheโ€™d seen it. Sheโ€™d thought that sheโ€™d hit the motherlode, but in a game that was meant to be competitiveโ€”and fairโ€” why would thereย beย a motherlode?

โ€œNash told me he liked my necklace,โ€ Gigi continued, her thoughts racing to catch up with her mouth. โ€œI thought he was commenting on it as a kind of congratulations, you know,ย well done, you tricksy Gigi. But what if he thought it was my necklace? That Iโ€™d worn it to the island?โ€ Gigiโ€™s thoughts werenโ€™t just racing now. They were trying to qualify for the Indy

500. โ€œAnd when Avery mentioned on the beach that some players had found hidden treasure, she looked at Odette, and she looked at Savannah, but I donโ€™t think she ever looked at me.โ€

There was a single momentโ€™s silence. โ€œIf youโ€™re correctโ€ฆโ€ Bradyโ€™s brow furrowed in what Gigi couldnโ€™t help noticing was a highly attractive way. โ€œIf the Objects you found arenโ€™t a part of the gameโ€”โ€

โ€œThe wetsuit inside the bag,โ€ Knox cut in abruptly. โ€œIt was damp.โ€ โ€œRecently used.โ€ Gigi swallowed. What did that mean?

โ€œMaybe Knox isnโ€™t the only player in this game who has a sponsor.โ€ Brady didnโ€™t stop there. โ€œAnd maybe the players and the game makers arenโ€™t the only ones on Hawthorne Island.โ€
