Chapter no 39 – Tucker

The Goal (Off-Campus, #4)

SABRINA LOOKS LIKEย she wants to crawl under a rock. Or maybe jump out one of the many windows in our apartment. I know she doesnโ€™t like being put on the spot, and I probably wouldnโ€™t even blame her if she decided to flee.

But whatever my mother said to her before I came homeโ€”and I intend on finding out every last word that was spokenโ€”has clearly given Sabrina a dose of courage. She frowns briefly at my mom, then turns to me and meets my gaze straight on.

โ€œI love you,โ€ she confirms.

I take a step closer. โ€œSince when?โ€

โ€œSince fucking always.โ€ When my mom winces, Sabrina gives her a sheepish look. โ€œSorry. Tuck and I are still going through a language transition. We donโ€™t always remember to say โ€˜fudgeโ€™ and โ€˜sugar,โ€™ okay?โ€ She lifts an eyebrow. โ€œAre you going to lecture me about that too?โ€

Momโ€™s lips twitch as if sheโ€™s trying not to laugh. โ€œNo,โ€ she says faintly. โ€œIโ€™m not. In factโ€ฆโ€ She makes a big show of slipping into her winter boots and coat. โ€œI think Iโ€™ll take a walk around the block. I love looking at all the snow.โ€

โ€œBullshit,โ€ I cough into my hands. My mom despises winter and we both know it.

She glares at me on her way to the door. โ€œPlease speed up this language transition, John.โ€ And then sheโ€™s gone, and Sabrina and I exchange grins.

The humor doesnโ€™t last long, though. โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ Sabrina tells me.

โ€œFor what?โ€ I bridge the distance between us and plant both hands on her slender hips.

โ€œI didnโ€™t mean to be rude to your mother. Itโ€™s justโ€ฆshe said someโ€ฆ hurtful things.โ€ She holds up her hand when she sees my dark expression.

โ€œTheyโ€™re not worth repeating, and I have a feeling she wonโ€™t say that kind of stuff anymore.โ€

I nod slowly. โ€œYou mean now that she knows you love me?โ€ โ€œYeah.โ€

I search her beautiful face for a moment before smiling again. โ€œSince fucking always, huh?โ€

โ€œWell, maybe not always,โ€ she concedes. โ€œI wonโ€™t lie, Tuck. That connection you talked about when we first met? About our eyes meeting across the room and how you felt something in that moment?โ€ Sabrina sighs. โ€œAll I felt was lust that night.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€

โ€œBut itโ€™s not just lust anymore. It hasnโ€™t been about that for a long time.โ€ โ€œWhen?โ€ I canโ€™t help but tease. โ€œWhen did you figure out youโ€™re madly

in love with me?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know. Maybe on that ridiculous double date? Maybe when you took care of me when I thought I was sick? When you got me the briefcase? When you punched out Ray in my honor?โ€ Each word is lined with wonder. โ€œI donโ€™t know exactly when, Tuck, but I know I love you.โ€

A lump rises in my throat. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you say anything sooner?โ€

โ€œBecause I was scared. And because I wasnโ€™t sure if you actually loved me backโ€”โ€

โ€œAre you kidding me? I lost my head for you the second we met. You know that.โ€

She stubbornly sticks out her chin. โ€œI figured you were thinking with your dick. Guys do that.โ€

Iโ€™ll give her that. But Iโ€™ve never been one of those guys.

โ€œAnd then I got pregnant, and I was worried you were confusing your feelings for the baby with your feelings for me.โ€ She rakes a hand through her silky dark hair. โ€œBut the biggest thing isโ€ฆwasโ€ฆthat Iโ€ฆIโ€ฆโ€

I stroke her hips. โ€œYou what?โ€

Tears cling to her long eyelashes. โ€œI canโ€™t be the person who ruins your life. I already turned you into a father earlier than you wanted to be one. I didnโ€™t want love to complicate everything. I didnโ€™t wantโ€ฆโ€ She blinks rapidly. โ€œI didnโ€™t want you to wake up one day and hate me.โ€

I growl. โ€œHate you? Jesus, woman.โ€ Hauling her tight against me, I bury my face in her neck. โ€œYou still donโ€™t get it, do you?โ€

โ€œGet what?โ€ she asks in a small voice.

โ€œYou. Me. Us. This.โ€ I spit out words as they pop into my head. โ€œYouโ€™re the one, Sabrina. Thereโ€™s no one else for me in this world, nobody but you. If I was driving and saw you on the side of the road? You better believe Iโ€™d rip out a spark plug or two if it meant getting to spend even five seconds in your presence. Youโ€™re the fucking one.โ€

Her breath hitches.

โ€œEven if you didnโ€™t give me Jamieโ€”which is the greatest goddamn gift in the world, by the wayโ€”Iโ€™d still want to be with you. Even if you hadnโ€™t said you loved me back, Iโ€™d take whatever scraps you were willing to give me as long as I could be with you. I donโ€™t give a shit if that makes me patheticโ€”โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not pathetic.โ€ Her expression is fierce now. โ€œYou could never be pathetic.โ€

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t care if you thought I was.โ€ I cup her face in my hands and wipe away her tears with my thumbs. โ€œYouโ€™re the best thing thatโ€™s ever happened to me, Sabrina James.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ She smiles. โ€œYouโ€™re the best thing thatโ€™s ever happened toย me.โ€

Before I can lean down to kiss her, a hearty cry wails through the apartment.

โ€œAndย that,โ€ I murmur, โ€œis the best thing thatโ€™s ever happened to either one of us.โ€

A tear breaks free from her lashes and slides down her cheek. โ€œYes. It

is.โ€

Jamie lets out another bloodcurdling shriek, and we both hurry toward

the corridor that leads to the bedrooms. Right outside the nursery door, though, I stop Sabrina by taking her hand.

โ€œShe can cry for five more seconds,โ€ I decide. โ€œWeโ€™re trying out that self-soothing thing anyway, remember?โ€

Her lips quiver with humor. โ€œI thought you were against it.โ€ She deepens her voice and gives it a drawl to mimic me. โ€œโ€˜I ainโ€™t gonna let my princess suffer, darlinโ€™. What kind of father does that?โ€™โ€

My jaw drops in outrage. โ€œI did not sayย ainโ€™t.โ€ โ€œYou may as well have.โ€

Rolling my eyes, I tug her toward me and capture her bottom lip between my teeth. Sabrina moans in response, which wakes up my cock.

โ€œI wanted a kiss,โ€ I grumble against her mouth. โ€œNot sex noises.โ€

โ€œToo bad. Youโ€™re getting both.โ€ She proceeds to stick her tongue in my mouth and kiss the shit out of me until weโ€™re both making sex noises.

When we break apart, weโ€™re both laughing and breathing hard, and Jamie is still screaming her displeasure to anyone whoโ€™ll listen.

โ€œCโ€™mon, letโ€™s go wait on the princess,โ€ Sabrina says with a smile.

She gives my ass a playful smack, and then we walk into the nursery, hand-in-hand, to see our daughter.
