Chapter no 79

The Final Gambit (The Inheritance Games, 3)

Tobyโ€™s bruises were healing, and he needed to shave. Those were my first two thoughts, followed immediately by a dozen others about him and my mom and the last time Iโ€™d seen him, each thought accompanied by a wave of emotion that threatened to take me down.

โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t be here.โ€ Toby kept a handle on whatever emotions he was feeling, but the intensity in his eyes told me he was holding on to that composure by a thread.

โ€œI know,โ€ I replied, and I hoped my tone made him realize that I wasnโ€™t just saying I knew I shouldnโ€™t be here.ย I know who Blake is. I know what heโ€™s capable of. I know what Iโ€™m doing.

For this to work, Toby didnโ€™t have to trust me, but I did need him to stay out of my way.

โ€œYouโ€™re going to play a game,โ€ Vincent Blake told Toby. โ€œAll three of youโ€”a tournament of sorts, consisting of three matches.โ€ Blake lifted a single finger and gestured from Toby to Eve. โ€œMy grandson and his daughter.โ€ A second finger came up. โ€œMy grandson and the girl who isย notย his daughter.โ€

Toby and me.ย Ouch.

โ€œAndโ€ฆโ€ Blake raised a third and final finger. โ€œAvery and Eve against each other.โ€ The man gave us a few seconds to process that, then continued. โ€œAs for incentiveโ€ฆ well, these things must have stakes.โ€

Something about the way he saidย stakesย sent a shiver down my spine.

โ€œWin both of your matches and you can go,โ€ Blake told

Toby. โ€œDisappear however you like. Youโ€™ll never hear from me again, and Iโ€™ll allow the world to continue to believe that you are dead. Lose one of your matches and youโ€™re still free to go, but not as a dead man. Youโ€™ll confirm for the world that Toby Hawthorne is alive and never go off the grid again.โ€

Toby didnโ€™t blanch. I wasnโ€™t sure if Blake had expected him to.

โ€œLose both of your matches,โ€ the older man continued with a tilt to his lips that I did not trust, โ€œand you wonโ€™t be coming back to life as Toby Hawthorne. Youโ€™ll agree to stay here of your own free will as Toby Blake.โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ I objected. โ€œToby, youโ€”โ€

Toby cut me off with the slightest shift in his expression

โ€”a warning. โ€œWhat are their terms?โ€ he asked his grandfather.

Blake drank in Tobyโ€™s response, pleased, and then turned to Eve. โ€œWin one of your matches,โ€ he told her, โ€œand you can have this.โ€ He brandished a Blake family seal at Eve. โ€œLose both, and youโ€™ll be at the service of whoever I give it to in your stead.โ€ There was something deeply disconcerting about the way he saidย service. โ€œWin both of your matches,โ€ Blake finished silkily, โ€œand Iโ€™ll give you all five.โ€

All five seals.ย An electric current swept through the premises. Isaiah had said that anyone holding a seal when Vincent Blake died was entitled to one-fifth of his fortune, and that meant Blake had just promised Eve that if she could beat Tobyย andย me, heโ€™d give her everything.

All the power. All the money. All of it.

โ€œAnd as for you, Tobias Hawthorneโ€™sย very risky gambleโ€ฆโ€ Vincent Blake smiled. โ€œLose both, and Iโ€™ll take that favor you offeredโ€”a blank check, if you will, to be cashed at a time of my choosing.โ€

Toby caught my gaze.ย No.ย He didnโ€™t make the objection out loud. After a moment, I looked away. There wasnโ€™t a

warning he could issue that would be news to me. Owing Vincent Blake a favor was a very bad idea.

โ€œWin at least one game,โ€ Blake continued, โ€œand Iโ€™ll release Grayson Hawthorne to you, with a guarantee that I wonโ€™t make a guest of anyone under your protection again.โ€

Guestย was one way of phrasing itโ€”but as far as incentives went, it was enticing. Too enticing.ย If heโ€™s willing to keep his hands off my loved ones, he must have other buttons to push. Other forms of leverage.

Another plan to take everything from me.

โ€œWin both games,โ€ Blake promised, โ€œand Iโ€™ll also swear secrecy on the matter of Sheffield Grayson.โ€

Toby flinched. Clearly, he hadnโ€™t known about that bit of leverage his biological grandfather had been holding in reserve.

โ€œAre these terms acceptable to you?โ€ Blake asked Toby and only Toby, like Eve and I were foregone conclusions.

Toby gritted his teeth. โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Eve said, alive in a way that made all other versions of her seem faded and incomplete.

And as for meโ€ฆ

Blake will honor his word.ย If I won both matches, the truth about Graysonโ€™s father would stay buried. The people I loved would be safe. Blake would still be coming for me. Heโ€™d find a way of destroying me and all I held dear, but heโ€™d be limited in how he could do that.

โ€œI agree to your terms,โ€ I said, even though heโ€™d never given me the option to do anything else.

Blake turned to the glittering, five-hundred-thousand- dollar chess set Iโ€™d gifted him. โ€œWell then. Shall we begin?โ€
