The Final Gambit (The Inheritance Games, 3)

What did you just do?โ€ Jameson looked at me the way he had the night heโ€™d told me that I was their grandfatherโ€™s last puzzle, like after all this time, there were still things about me, about what I was capable of, that could surprise him.

Like he wanted to know them all.

โ€œI called the authorities and reported that human remains had been found at Hawthorne House.โ€ That much had probably been obvious if theyโ€™d overheard me. What Jameson was really asking me wasย why.

โ€œFar be it from me to state the obvious,โ€ Thea cut in, โ€œbut wasnโ€™t the point of diggingย thatย up to make a trade?โ€

I could feel Jameson reading me, feel his brain sorting through the possibilities in mine.

โ€œI have another call to make,โ€ I said. โ€œTo Blake?โ€ Rebecca asked.

โ€œNo,โ€ Jameson answered for me.

โ€œI donโ€™t have time to explain,โ€ I told all of them.

โ€œYouโ€™re playing him.โ€ Jameson didnโ€™t phrase that as a question.

โ€œBlake said to bring him the body, and it will be returned to him. Eventually. And when it is, I wonโ€™t have broken any laws.โ€

It was easier thinking of this like chess. Trying to see my opponentโ€™s moves coming before he made them. Baiting the moves I wanted, blocking attacks before they happened.

Xanderโ€™s eyes widened. โ€œYou think that if youโ€™d taken

him the remains, he would have held the illegality of that move over you?โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t afford to hand him any more leverage.โ€ โ€œBecause, of course, this is all about you.โ€ Theaโ€™s voice

was dangerously pleasantโ€”never a good sign. โ€œThea,โ€ Rebecca said quietly. โ€œLet it go.โ€

โ€œNo. This is yourย family, Bex. And no matter how hard you try, no matter how angry you manage to getโ€”thatโ€™s always going to matter to you.โ€ Thea lifted a hand to the side of Rebeccaโ€™s face. โ€œI saw you back there with your mom.โ€

Rebecca looked like she wanted to get lost in Theaโ€™s eyes, but she didnโ€™t let herself. โ€œI always thought there was something wrong with me,โ€ she said, her voice breaking. โ€œEmily was my momโ€™s world, and I was a shadow, and I thought it wasย me.โ€

โ€œBut now you know,โ€ Thea said softly, โ€œit was never you.โ€ Malloryโ€™s trauma was Rebeccaโ€™s traumaโ€”probably was

Emilyโ€™s, too.

โ€œI am done living in the shadows, Thea,โ€ Rebecca said. She turned to me. โ€œBring on the light. Tell the world the truth. Do it.โ€

That wasnโ€™t my planโ€”not exactly. There was one move that would let me protect the people who needed protecting. One sequence, if I could execute it.

If Blake didnโ€™t see it coming.

Reporting the body was just step one. Step two was controlling the narrative.

โ€œAvery.โ€ Landon answered my call on the third ring. โ€œCorrect me if Iโ€™m wrong, but our working relationship came to an end quite some time ago.โ€

Iโ€™d had other publicists and media consultants since, but for what I was planning, I needed the best. โ€œI need to talk to you about a dead body and the story of the century.โ€

Silenceโ€”enough of it that I wondered if sheโ€™d hung up on me. Then Landon offered up two words, her British

accent crisp. โ€œIโ€™m listening.โ€

I threw Tobias Hawthorne under the bus. Thoroughly and without mercy. Dead men didnโ€™t get to be picky about their reputations, and that went double for dead men whoโ€™d used me the way he had.

Tobias Hawthorne had killed a man forty years agoโ€”and covered it up. That was the story I was telling, and it was one hell of a story.

โ€œWhere are you going?โ€ Jameson called after me once Iโ€™d hung up with Landon.

โ€œThe vault,โ€ I replied. โ€œThereโ€™s something I need before I go to confront Vincent Blake.โ€

Jameson ran to catch up with me. He made it past me, then turned back just as I took a step that put his body far too close to mine.

โ€œAnd what do you need out of the vault?โ€ Jameson asked. โ€œIf I tell you,โ€ I said, โ€œare you going to try to lock me up

again?โ€

Jameson lifted a hand to the side of my neck. โ€œIs it risky?โ€

I didnโ€™t look away. โ€œExtremely.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ His green eyes intense, he let his thumb trace the edge of my jaw. โ€œTo best Blake, it will have to be.โ€

Some words were just words, and others were like fire. I felt it catching inside of me, spreading, as searing as any kiss.ย Weโ€™re back.

โ€œAnd once youโ€™ve bested him,โ€ Jameson continued, โ€œbecause youย willโ€ฆโ€ There was no feeling in the world like beingย seenย by Jameson Hawthorne. โ€œIโ€™m going to need an anagram for the wordย everything.โ€
