What did you just do?โ Jameson looked at me the way he had the night heโd told me that I was their grandfatherโs last puzzle, like after all this time, there were still things about me, about what I was capable of, that could surprise him.
Like he wanted to know them all.
โI called the authorities and reported that human remains had been found at Hawthorne House.โ That much had probably been obvious if theyโd overheard me. What Jameson was really asking me wasย why.
โFar be it from me to state the obvious,โ Thea cut in, โbut wasnโt the point of diggingย thatย up to make a trade?โ
I could feel Jameson reading me, feel his brain sorting through the possibilities in mine.
โI have another call to make,โ I said. โTo Blake?โ Rebecca asked.
โNo,โ Jameson answered for me.
โI donโt have time to explain,โ I told all of them.
โYouโre playing him.โ Jameson didnโt phrase that as a question.
โBlake said to bring him the body, and it will be returned to him. Eventually. And when it is, I wonโt have broken any laws.โ
It was easier thinking of this like chess. Trying to see my opponentโs moves coming before he made them. Baiting the moves I wanted, blocking attacks before they happened.
Xanderโs eyes widened. โYou think that if youโd taken
him the remains, he would have held the illegality of that move over you?โ
โI canโt afford to hand him any more leverage.โ โBecause, of course, this is all about you.โ Theaโs voice
was dangerously pleasantโnever a good sign. โThea,โ Rebecca said quietly. โLet it go.โ
โNo. This is yourย family, Bex. And no matter how hard you try, no matter how angry you manage to getโthatโs always going to matter to you.โ Thea lifted a hand to the side of Rebeccaโs face. โI saw you back there with your mom.โ
Rebecca looked like she wanted to get lost in Theaโs eyes, but she didnโt let herself. โI always thought there was something wrong with me,โ she said, her voice breaking. โEmily was my momโs world, and I was a shadow, and I thought it wasย me.โ
โBut now you know,โ Thea said softly, โit was never you.โ Malloryโs trauma was Rebeccaโs traumaโprobably was
Emilyโs, too.
โI am done living in the shadows, Thea,โ Rebecca said. She turned to me. โBring on the light. Tell the world the truth. Do it.โ
That wasnโt my planโnot exactly. There was one move that would let me protect the people who needed protecting. One sequence, if I could execute it.
If Blake didnโt see it coming.
Reporting the body was just step one. Step two was controlling the narrative.
โAvery.โ Landon answered my call on the third ring. โCorrect me if Iโm wrong, but our working relationship came to an end quite some time ago.โ
Iโd had other publicists and media consultants since, but for what I was planning, I needed the best. โI need to talk to you about a dead body and the story of the century.โ
Silenceโenough of it that I wondered if sheโd hung up on me. Then Landon offered up two words, her British
accent crisp. โIโm listening.โ
I threw Tobias Hawthorne under the bus. Thoroughly and without mercy. Dead men didnโt get to be picky about their reputations, and that went double for dead men whoโd used me the way he had.
Tobias Hawthorne had killed a man forty years agoโand covered it up. That was the story I was telling, and it was one hell of a story.
โWhere are you going?โ Jameson called after me once Iโd hung up with Landon.
โThe vault,โ I replied. โThereโs something I need before I go to confront Vincent Blake.โ
Jameson ran to catch up with me. He made it past me, then turned back just as I took a step that put his body far too close to mine.
โAnd what do you need out of the vault?โ Jameson asked. โIf I tell you,โ I said, โare you going to try to lock me up
again?โ
Jameson lifted a hand to the side of my neck. โIs it risky?โ
I didnโt look away. โExtremely.โ
โGood.โ His green eyes intense, he let his thumb trace the edge of my jaw. โTo best Blake, it will have to be.โ
Some words were just words, and others were like fire. I felt it catching inside of me, spreading, as searing as any kiss.ย Weโre back.
โAnd once youโve bested him,โ Jameson continued, โbecause youย willโฆโ There was no feeling in the world like beingย seenย by Jameson Hawthorne. โIโm going to need an anagram for the wordย everything.โ
