Chapter no 73

The Final Gambit (The Inheritance Games, 3)

My arms were aching by the time the ground caved in, revealing a chamber belowโ€”part of the tunnels, but not a part Iโ€™d ever seen.

Before I could say a word, Jameson leapt into the darkness.

I lowered myself down more cautiously, landing beside him in a crouch. I stood, shining the light from my phone. The chamber was smallโ€”and empty.

No body.

I scanned the walls and saw a torch. Latching my fingers around the torch, I tried to pull it from the wall, to no avail. I let my fingers explore the metal sconce that held the torch in place. โ€œThereโ€™s a hinge back here,โ€ I said. โ€œOr something like it. I think it rotatesโ€

Jameson placed his hand over mine, and together we twisted the torch sideways. There was a scraping sound and then a hiss, and the torch burst into flame.

Jameson didnโ€™t let go, and neither did I.

We pulled the flaming torch from the sconce, and as the flame came close to the wallโ€™s surface, words lit up in Tobyโ€™s writing.

โ€œI was never a Hawthorne,โ€ I read out loud. Jameson let his hand fall to his side, until I was the only one holding the torch. Slowly, I walked the perimeter of the room. The flame revealed words on each wall.

I was never a Hawthorne. I will never be a Blake.

So what does that make me?

I saw the message on the final wall, and my heart contracted.ย Complicit.

โ€œTry the floor,โ€ Jameson told me.

I brought the torch low, careful of the flame, and one final message lit up.ย Try again, Father.

The body wasnโ€™t here. It had never been here.

A light shone down from up above.ย Mr. Laughlin.ย He helped us out of the chamber, silent the whole time, his expression absolutely unreadable, right up to the point that I tried to step from the center back into the maze, and he moved to stand right in front of me.

Blocking me.

โ€œI heard about Alisa.โ€ The groundskeeperโ€™s voice was always gruff, but the visible sorrow in his eyes was new. โ€œThe kind of man who would take a womanโ€”heโ€™s no man at all.โ€ He paused. โ€œNash came to me,โ€ he said haltingly. โ€œHe asked me for help, and that boy wouldnโ€™t even let you help tie his shoes as a toddler.โ€

โ€œYou know where Will Blakeโ€™s remains are,โ€ I said, giving voice to the realization as it dawned on me. โ€œThatโ€™s why Nash went to you and asked you for help.โ€

Mr. Laughlin forced himself to look at me. โ€œSome things are best left buried.โ€

I wasnโ€™t about to accept that. Iย couldnโ€™t. Anger snaked through me, burning in my veins. At Vincent Blake and Tobias Hawthorne and this man who was supposed to work for me but would always put the Hawthorne family first.

โ€œIโ€™ll raze this entire thing to the ground,โ€ I swore. Some situations required a scalpel, but this?ย Bring on the chain saws.ย โ€œIโ€™ll hire men to tear this maze apart. Iโ€™ll bring out cadaver dogs. I will burn it all down to get Alisa back.โ€

Mr. Laughlinโ€™s body trembled. โ€œYou have no right.โ€ โ€œGrandpa.โ€

He turned, and Rebecca stepped into view. Thea and Xander followed, but Mr. Laughlin barely noticed them.

โ€œThis isnโ€™t right,โ€ he told Rebecca. โ€œI made promisesโ€”to myself, to your mother, to Mr. Hawthorne.โ€

If Iโ€™d had any doubts that the groundskeeper knew where the body was, that statement erased them. โ€œVincent Blake has Toby, too,โ€ I said. โ€œNot just Alisa. Donโ€™t you want your grandson back?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you talk to me about my grandson.โ€ Mr. Laughlin was breathing heavily now.

Rebecca laid a calming hand on his arm. โ€œIt wasnโ€™t Mr.

Hawthorne who killed Liam,โ€ she said quietly. โ€œWas it?โ€

Mr. Laughlin shuddered. โ€œGo back to the cottage, Rebecca.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œYou used to be such a good girl,โ€ Mr. Laughlin grunted. โ€œI used to make myself small.โ€ Rebeccaโ€™s was a subtle

kind of steel. โ€œBut here with youโ€”I didnโ€™t have to. I used to live for the few weeks we spent here each summer. Iโ€™d help you. Do you remember? I liked working with my hands, getting them dirty.โ€ She shook her head. โ€œI was never allowed to get dirty at home.โ€

Back when Emily was young and medically vulnerable, Rebeccaโ€™s home had probably been entirely sterile.

โ€œPlease go back to the cottage.โ€ Mr. Laughlinโ€™s tone and mannerisms were a perfect match for his granddaughterโ€™s: quiet, understated steel. Until that moment, Iโ€™d never seen the resemblance between the two of them. โ€œThea, take her back.โ€

โ€œI loved working with you,โ€ Rebecca told her grandfather, the sun catching her ruby-red hair. โ€œBut there was one part of the maze that you always insisted on doing yourself.โ€

My stomach twisted.ย Rebecca knows where to dig.

โ€œEmily looked like your mother,โ€ Mr. Laughlin said roughly. โ€œBut you have her mind, Rebecca. She was brilliant. Is still.โ€ He choked on the next words.ย โ€œMy little girl.โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t Mr. Hawthorne who killed Vincent Blakeโ€™s son,โ€ Rebecca said softly. โ€œWas it?โ€ There was no answer. โ€œEveโ€™s gone. Mom lost it when she couldnโ€™t find her. She saidโ€”โ€

โ€œWhatever your mother said,โ€ Mr. Laughlin cut in harshly, โ€œyou forget it, Rebecca.โ€ He looked from her to the horizon. โ€œThatโ€™s how this works. Weโ€™ve all done our share of forgetting.โ€

For more than forty years, this secret had festered. It had affected all of themโ€”two families, three generations, one poisonous tree.

โ€œYour daughter was only sixteen.โ€ I started with what I knew. โ€œWill Blake was a grown man. He came here with something to prove.โ€

โ€œHe used your daughter.โ€ Xander took over for me. โ€œTo spy on our grandfather.โ€

โ€œWill used and manipulated your sixteen-year-old daughter. He got her pregnant,โ€ Jameson continued, cutting straight to the heart of the matter.

โ€œIโ€™ve given my life to the Hawthorne family. I donโ€™t owe any of you this.โ€ Mr. Laughlinโ€™s voice wasnโ€™t just harsh now. It was vibrating with fury.

I felt for him. I did. But this wasnโ€™t theoretical. It wasnโ€™t a game. This might well be life or death.

โ€œShow us the part of the maze he wouldnโ€™t let you work on,โ€ I told Rebecca.

She took a step, and Mr. Laughlin grabbed her arm.

Hard.

โ€œLet her go,โ€ Thea said, raising her voice.

Rebecca caught Theaโ€™s gaze, just for a moment, then turned back to her grandfather. โ€œMomโ€™s distraught. She started rambling. She told me that Liam was angry when he found out about the baby. He was going to leave her, so she stole something from the House, from Mr. Hawthorneโ€™s office. She told Liam that she had something he could use against Tobias Hawthorne, just so he would meet with her

again. But when he came, when she went to give him what sheโ€™d taken, it wasnโ€™t in her bag.โ€

I pictured them someplace isolated. The Black Wood, maybe.

โ€œTobias.โ€ At first that was all Mr. Laughlin managedโ€”the dead billionaireโ€™s name. โ€œHe was spying on them. He followed Mal that day. He didnโ€™t know why sheโ€™d stolen from him, but he was damn set on finding out.โ€

โ€œWhat he found,โ€ Jameson concluded, โ€œwas Vincent Blakeโ€™s adult son taking advantage of a teenage girl under his protection.โ€

I thought about the reason that Tobias Hawthorne had turned on Blake in the first place.ย Boys will be boys.

โ€œThat little bastard Liam got angry when Mal couldnโ€™t give him what sheโ€™d promised. He went cold, told her that she was nothing. When he went to leave, she tried to stop him, and that monster raised a hand to my little girl.โ€

I got the very real sense that if Will Blake rose from the dead right now, Mr. Laughlin would put him six feet under all over again.

โ€œThe second Liam got rough, Mr. Hawthorne stepped out from wherever heโ€™d been hiding to issue some very pointed threats. Mal was sixteen. There were laws.โ€ Mr. Laughlin let out a breath, and it was a ragged, ugly sound. โ€œThe man should have slunk away like the rat he was, but Malโ€”she didnโ€™t want Liam to go. She threatened him, too, said that she would go to his father and tell him about the baby.โ€

โ€œWill needed to keep his fatherโ€™s favor to keep his seal,โ€ I said, thinking about Vincent Blakeโ€™sย short stringย for his family. โ€œMore than that, if heโ€™d come here to prove something to Blake, to impress himโ€”the idea of doing the opposite?โ€

I swallowed.

โ€œLiam snapped and lunged for her again. Malโ€”she fought back.โ€ Mr. Laughlinโ€™s eyes closed. โ€œI came in just as Mr. Hawthorne was pulling that man off my daughter. He

got that bastard under control, had his arms pinned behind his back, and thenโ€”โ€ Mr. Laughlin forced his eyes open and looked toward Rebecca. โ€œThen my little girl picked up a brick. She went at him too quick for me to stop her. And not just once.โ€ฆ She hit him over and over again.โ€

โ€œIt was self-defense,โ€ Jameson said.

Mr. Laughlin looked down, then forced his gaze to mine, like he needed me, of everyone here, to understand. โ€œNo. It wasnโ€™t.โ€

I wondered how many times Mallory had hit her Liam before they stopped her. I wonderedย ifย they had stopped her.

โ€œI got a hold of her,โ€ Mr. Laughlin said, his voice heavy. โ€œShe just kept saying that she thought he loved her. She thoughtโ€”โ€ There were no tears in his eyes, but a sob racked his chest. โ€œMr. Hawthorne told me to go. He told me to take Mal and get her out of there.โ€

โ€œWas Liam dead?โ€ I asked, my mouth almost painfully dry.

There wasnโ€™t a hint of remorse in the groundskeeperโ€™s face. โ€œNot yet.โ€

Will Blake had been breathing when Mr. Laughlin left him alone with Tobias Hawthorne.

โ€œYour daughter had just attacked Vincent Blakeโ€™s son.โ€ Jameson was wired to find hidden truths, to turn everything into a puzzle, then solve it. โ€œBack then, our family wasnโ€™t wealthy enough or powerful enough to protect her. Not yet.โ€

โ€œDo you even know what happened after you left?โ€ Rebecca asked after a long and painful silence.

โ€œMy understanding is that he needed medical attention.โ€ Mr. Laughlin looked at each of us in turn. โ€œShame he didnโ€™t get it.โ€

I pictured Tobias Hawthorne standing there and watching a man die. Letting him die.

โ€œAnd afterward?โ€ Xander said, uncharacteristically

muted.

โ€œI never asked,โ€ Mr. Laughlin said sti๏ฌ„y. โ€œAnd Mr.

Hawthorne never told me.โ€

My mind racedโ€”through the years, navigating through everything we knew. โ€œBut when Toby moved the bodyโ€ฆโ€ I started to say.

Mr. Laughlin locked his gaze back on the horizon. โ€œI knew heโ€™d buried something. Once Toby ran off and Mr. Hawthorne started asking questions, I figured out pretty quick what that something was.โ€

And you never said a word, I thought.

โ€œShow them the spot if you have to, Rebecca.โ€ Mr. Laughlin gently pushed his granddaughterโ€™s hair away from her face. โ€œBut if Vincent Blake asks what happened, you protect your mother. You tell him that it was me.โ€
