The Final Gambit (The Inheritance Games, 3)

Oren left Grayson and me alone in the chapel. โ€œI owe you an apology.โ€

I met Grayson Hawthorneโ€™s eyes, as light and piercing as theyโ€™d been the first time I saw him. โ€œYou donโ€™t owe me anything,โ€ I saidโ€”not out of compassion but because it hurt to let myself think about how much Iโ€™d expected from him.

โ€œYes. I do.โ€ After a long moment, Grayson looked away. โ€œI,โ€ he said, like that one word cost him everything, โ€œhave been punishing myself for so long. Not just for Emilyโ€™s deathโ€”for every weakness, every miscalculation,ย everyโ€”โ€ He cut off, like his windpipe had closed suddenly around the words. I watched as he forced a jagged breath into his lungs. โ€œNo matter what I was or what I didโ€”it was never enough. The old man was always there, pushing for better, for more.โ€

Iโ€™d thought once that he had bulletproof confidence. That he was arrogant and incapable of second-guessing himself and utterly sure of his own power.

โ€œAnd then,โ€ Grayson said, โ€œthe old man was gone. And thenโ€ฆ there was you.โ€

โ€œGrayson.โ€ His name caught in my throat.

Grayson just looked at me, his light eyes shadowed. โ€œSometimes, you have an idea of a personโ€”about who they are, about what youโ€™d be like together. But sometimes thatโ€™s all it is: an idea. And for so long, I have been afraid that I loved theย ideaย of Emily more than I will ever be capable of loving anyone real.โ€

That was a confession and self-condemnation and a

curse. โ€œThatโ€™s not true, Grayson.โ€

He looked at me like the act of doing so was painful and sweet. โ€œIt was never just the idea of you, Avery.โ€

I tried not to feel like the ground was suddenly moving underneath my feet. โ€œYouย hatedย the idea of me.โ€

โ€œBut not you.โ€ The words were just as sweet, just as painful. โ€œNever you.โ€

Something gave inside me. โ€œGrayson.โ€ โ€œI know,โ€ he said roughly.

I shook my head. โ€œYouโ€™re still so convinced that you know everything.โ€

โ€œI know that Jamie loves you.โ€ Grayson looked at me the way you look at art in a glass case, like he wanted to reach out to touch me but couldnโ€™t. โ€œAnd Iโ€™ve seen the way that you look at him, the way the two of you are together. Youโ€™re in love with my brother, Avery.โ€ He paused. โ€œTell me youโ€™re not.โ€

I couldnโ€™t do that. He knew I couldnโ€™t. โ€œI am in love with your brother,โ€ I said, because it was true. Jameson was part of me nowโ€”part of who Iโ€™d spent the past year becoming. Iโ€™d changed. If I hadnโ€™t, maybe things could have been different, but there was no going back.

I was who I wasย becauseย of Jameson. I hadnโ€™t been lying when Iโ€™d told him that I didnโ€™t want him to be anyone else.

So why was this so hard?

โ€œI wanted Eve to be different,โ€ Grayson told me. โ€œI wanted her to be you.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t say that,โ€ I whispered.

He looked at me one last time. โ€œThere are so many things that I will never say.โ€

He was getting ready to walk away, and I had to let him

โ€”but I couldnโ€™t. โ€œPromise me you wonโ€™t leave again,โ€ I told Grayson. โ€œYou can go back to Harvard. You can go wherever you want, do whatever you wantโ€”just promise me that you wonโ€™t shut us out again.โ€ I lifted my hand to my Hawthorne pin. I knew he had one of his own. I knew

that, but I took mine off and pinned it on him anyway. โ€œEst unus ex nobis.ย You said that to Jameson once, do you remember?ย She is one of us.ย Well, it goes both ways, Gray.โ€

Grayson closed his eyes, and I was hit with the feeling that I would never forget the way he looked standing there in the light from the stained-glass windows. Without his armor. Without pretense. Raw.

โ€œScio,โ€ Grayson told me.ย I know.

I looked down at the USB in his hand.

โ€œI have the other one,โ€ I told him. โ€œIt was the one object in the leather satchel that we never used, remember?โ€

Graysonโ€™s eyes opened. He stepped out of the light. โ€œAre you going to call my brothers?โ€ he asked me. โ€œOr shall I?โ€
