Iย locked my hand around the USB. As I pulled it out, my mind raced. The drive definitely hadnโt been sitting in a tomb for twenty years. It looked new.
โYou know, Avery, I want to be surprised that you got here first, but Iโm not.โย Eve.ย I whipped my head up to see her standing in the chapel doorway beneath a stone arch. โSome people just have that magic touch,โ she continued softly. She walked toward me, toward the altar. โWhat did you find in there?โ
She sounded hesitant, vulnerable, but the second Oren stepped into her path, the matching expression on her face flickered like a light bulb a second before it burns out.
โThere was supposed to be human remains in there,โ Eve said calmly.ย Tooย calmly. โBut there werenโt, were there?โ She cocked her head to the side, her hair falling in gentle amber waves as her gaze landed on the USB in my hand. โIโm going to need you to give me that.โ
โAre you out of your mind?โ I asked. I didnโt notice her hands moving until it was too late.
Sheโs got a gun.ย Eve held her weapon the way that Nash had taught me to hold mine.ย Her gun is pointed straight at me.ย That thought shouldnโt have computed, but I had a knife in my boot. Iโd spent all that time training. So when my body should have been panicking, an unnatural calm settled over me instead.
Oren drew his sidearm. โPut the weapon down,โ he ordered.
It was like Eve didnโt even hear him, like the only person
in this room she could see or hear was me.
โWhere did you even get a gun?โ I was stalling for time, assessing the situation. โThereโs no way you made it onto the estate with one that first morning.โ Even as I said the words, I thought about Eve bolting the moment sheโd โdiscoveredโ Vincent Blakeโs name.
โPut the gun down!โ Oren repeated. โI guarantee you that I can get a shot off before you can, and I donโt miss.โ
Eve took a step forward, utterly, beautifully unafraid. โAre you really going to let your bodyguard shoot me, Avery?โ
This was a different Eve. Gone were the layers of self- protection, the vulnerability, the raw emotionโall of it.
โYou helped Blake abduct Toby, didnโt you?โ I said, certainty washing over me like a wave of heat.
โI wouldnโt have had to,โ Eve replied, her tone smooth and hard, โif Toby had opened up. If heโd just agreed to bring me here.ย But he wouldnโt.โ
โThis is the last time that Iโm going to tell you to put the gun down!โ Oren boomed.
โIโm still Tobyโs daughter,โ Eve said, adopting a familiar, wide-eyed expression, her gun unwavering. โAnd honestly, Avery, how do you think Gray will feel if Oren shoots me? What do you think will happen if that beautiful, broken boy walks in here to find me bleeding out on the floor?โ
At her mention of Grayson, I instinctively looked for him, but he wasnโt there. My body shaking with pent-up rage, I turned to Oren. โPut the gun down,โ I told him.
My head of security stepped directly in front of me. โShe puts hers down first.โ
A haughty expression on her face, Eve lowered her weapon. Oren was on her in an instant, taking her to the ground, pinning her down.
Eve looked up at me from the chapel floor and smiled. โYou want Toby back, and I want whatever you found in that tomb.โ
Sheโd called it a tomb. Sheโd said earlier that there were supposed to be remains in there. I wondered how sheโd come to that conclusion, and then I remembered where Iโd left herโand with whom. โMallory,โ I said.
โShe admitted that Liam didnโt leave. I believe her exact words wereย There was so much blood.โ Eveโs gaze went to the altar. โSo whereโs the body?โ
โIs that really all you care about?โ I asked her. From the very beginning, sheโd told me that there was only one thing that mattered to her. I was starting to think that wasnโt a lieโit was just that her single-minded purpose had nothing to do with Toby.
It had never been about Toby.
โCaringย is a recipe for getting hurt, and I havenโt let anyone hurt me in a very long time.โ Eve smiled again, like she was the one who had the upper hand, not the one pinned to the ground. โIn all fairness, I did warn you, Avery. I told you that if I were you, I wouldnโt trust me, either. I told you that I am a person who will do anythingโanything
โto get what I want. I told you thatย invisibleย is the one thing that I will never be.โ
โAnd Toby,โ I said, staring at her, sick understanding coming over me, โwanted you to hide.โ
โBlake wants me by his side,โ Eve said, zeal in her voice. โI just have to prove myself first.โ
โYou donโt have one of the seals yet, do you?โ I asked. I thought about Nan saying that Vincent Blake didnโt give anyoneโnot even familyโa free ride.
โIโm going to get one,โ Eve told me, her voice burning with the fury of purpose. โGive me that USB, and maybe you can get what you want, too.โ She paused, then hit a nail right through my heart. โToby.โ
I hated even hearing her say his name. โHow could you do this?โ I said, thinking of the picture Blake had sent, the bruises on his faceโand then of the pictures of Toby and Eve on Eveโs camera roll. โHe trusted you.โ
โItโs easy to make people trust you,โ Eve commented softly, โif you let them see you bleed.โ I thought about the bruises sheโd shown up here sporting and wondered if sheโdย toldย someone to hit her. โYou can spend your whole life trying not to hurt,โ Eve continued, her voice high and clear, โbut making people hurtย forย you? Thatโs real power.โ
I thought of Toby telling me that he had two daughters.
โGive me the USB,โ Eve said again, her eyes still blazing, โand you wonโt ever have to see me again, Avery. Iโll earn my seal, and you can have this place and those boys all to yourself. Win-win.โ
She was delusional. Oren had her pinned. Sheโd come at meย with a gun. She was in no position to negotiate. โIโm not giving you anything,โ I said.
A flash of movement.ย I whipped my head toward the chapel door. Grayson stood there, backlit, his eyes locked on Oren, who was still restraining Eve.
โLet her go,โ Grayson ordered.
โSheโs a threat.โ Oren clipped the words. โShe pulled a gun on Avery. The only place I amย lettingย her go is far, far away from all of you.โ
โGrayson.โ I felt sick. โThis isnโt what it looks likeโโ
โHelp me,โ Eve begged him. โGet the USB that Avery has. Donโt let them take this from me, too.โ
Grayson stared at her a moment longer, then walked slowly toward me. He took the USB from my hand. I just stood there. Feeling like my insides had been hollowed out, I watched as he turned back to Eve. โI canโt let you have this,โ Grayson said softly.
โGraysonโโ Eve and I said his name in unison. โI heard.โ
Eve was unabashed. โWhatever you heard, youย knowย that I am not the villain here, Grayson. Your grandfatherโ he owed me better. He owed you better, and you and your family owe Averyย nothing.โ
Graysonโs eyes met mine. โI owe her more than she
realizes.โ
A dam broke inside me, and all of the hurt I hadnโt let myself feel came flooding out, and with it, everything else I feltโand had ever feltโfor Grayson Hawthorne.
โYouโre as bad as your grandfather was,โ Eve tried. โLook at me, Grayson.ย Look at me.โ
He did.
โIf you let Oren kick me out of here or call the police, if you try to force me to go back to Vincent Blake empty- handed, I swear to you, I will find a cliff to jump off of.โ There was something fierce and mad and savage in Eveโs voiceโsomething that sold that threat completely. โEmilyโs blood is on your hands. Do you really want mine there, too?โ
Grayson stared at her. I could see him reliving the moment heโd found Emily. I could see the effect that Eveโs specific threatโaย cliffโhad on him. I could see Grayson Davenport Hawthorne drowning, fighting the undertow in vain. And then I saw him stop fighting and let the memories and the grief and the truth wash over him.
And then Grayson took a breath. โYouโre a big girl,โ he told Eve. โYou make your own choices. Whatever you do after Oren sends you packingโthatโs on you.โ
I wondered if he really meant that. If he believed it. โThis is your chance,โ Eve said, fighting Orenโs grip.
โThis is redemption, Grayson. Iโm yours, and you could be mine. Itโs your fault Emilyโs dead. You could have stopped herโโ
Grayson took a single step toward her. โI shouldnโt have had to.โ He looked down at the USB in his hand. โAnd this would be useless to you.โ
โYou canโt know that.โ Eve was a wild thing now, fighting Oren with everything she had.
โAssuming this USB is my grandfatherโs handiwork,โ Grayson told her, โyou would need a decoder to make sense of any of the files. A Hawthorne never leaves any
knowledge of value unprotected.โ
โSo Iโll break the encryption,โ Eve said dismissively.
Grayson arched an eyebrow at her. โNot without a second drive.โ
A second drive.
โYou canโt do this to me, Grayson. Weโre the same, you and I.โ There was something in the way Eve said that, something in her voice that made me think she believed it.
Grayson didnโt blink. โNot anymore.โ
An instant later, Orenโs men came crashing through the door.
Oren turned to me. โHow do you want to handle this, Avery?โ
Eve had pointed a gun at me. That, at least, was a crime. Lying to us wasnโt. Manipulating us wasnโt. I couldnโt prove anything else. And she wasnโt theย realย enemy here.
The real threat.
โHave your men escort Eve off the estate,โ I told Oren. โWeโll deal directly with Vincent Blake from now on.โ
Eve didnโt make them drag her. โYou havenโt won,โ she told me. โHeโll keep comingโand sooner or later, all of you will wish to God that this had ended with me.โ
