Chapter no 63

The Final Gambit (The Inheritance Games, 3)

Oren and two of his men drove Jameson and me to Wayback Cottage. Rebecca didnโ€™t come with us, didnโ€™tย wantย to come with us. Thea and Xander stayed with her.

I rang the bellโ€”again and again until Mrs. Laughlin answered.

โ€œGrayson and Eve,โ€ I said, trying to sound calmer than I felt. โ€œAre they here?โ€

Mrs. Laughlin pinned me with a look that had probably been used on generations of Hawthorne children. โ€œTheyโ€™re in the kitchen with my daughter.โ€

I made my way there, Jameson on my heels, Oren directly to my left, his men only steps behind him. We found Eve sitting across a worn wooden table from Mallory. Grayson stood behind Eve like a wayward angel keeping watch.

Eve swiveled her gaze toward us, and I wondered if I was imagining the canny look in her eyes, imagining her assessing the situation, assessing me, before speaking. โ€œAny updates?โ€

One, I thought.ย I know that youโ€™re related to Vincent Blake.

โ€œI tried to get to Toby,โ€ Eve continued intently, โ€œbut I couldnโ€™t.ย Someoneย brought me back.โ€

That someone was standing so close to her now. โ€œGrayson,โ€ I said. โ€œI need to talk to you.โ€

Eve turned to look at him. There was something delicate about the way her hair fell off her shoulder, something almost mesmerizing about the way she lifted her eyes to

his.

โ€œGrayson,โ€ I said again, my voice urgent and low.

Jameson didnโ€™t give me the opportunity to say his brotherโ€™s name a third time. โ€œAvery found out something that you need to know. Outside, Gray. Now.โ€

Grayson walked toward us. Eve came, too. โ€œWhat did you find out?โ€ she asked.

โ€œWhat is it youโ€™re hoping Iโ€™ll find outโ€”or hoping I wonโ€™t?โ€ I hadnโ€™t meant to say that out loud, but now that I had, I marked her reaction.

โ€œWhat is that supposed to mean?โ€ Eve snapped, something like hurt flickering over her face.

Was that an act?ย This whole timeโ€”has it all been an act?ย My gaze landed on the chain around her neck, and I flashed back to the moment sheโ€™d stepped out of my bathroom wearing nothing but a towel and a locket. Why would Eve, whoโ€™d insisted sheโ€™d spent her whole life with no one, wear a locket?

What was inside?

A small metal disk.ย Isaiah had said that there were five, that Vincent Blake gave them exclusively to familyโ€”and Eve was family.

โ€œOpen your locket,โ€ I said sharply. โ€œShow me whatโ€™s inside.โ€

Eve stood very still. I moved, reaching for itโ€”but Grayson caught my hand. He gave me a look like a shard of ice. โ€œWhat are you doing, Avery?โ€

โ€œVincent Blake had a son,โ€ I said. I hadnโ€™t wanted to do this here, in front of Mallory and Mrs. Laughlin, but so be it. โ€œHis name was Will. I think he was Tobyโ€™s father. Andย this?โ€ I withdrew the Blake family seal, the one that had been in Tobyโ€™s possession when he disappeared. โ€œIt was almost certainly Willโ€™s. Blake gave them to family members who held his favor.โ€ I could feel Eve watching me. Her face was blankโ€”so carefully blank. โ€œIsnโ€™t that right, Eve?โ€

โ€œYou have no right,โ€ Mallory Laughlin snapped shrilly,

โ€œto come in here and say any of this.ย Any of it.โ€ She looked past me to Mrs. Laughlin. โ€œAre you going to just stand there and let her do this?โ€ she demanded, her voice going up an octave. โ€œThis is your home!โ€

โ€œI think it would be best,โ€ Mrs. Laughlin told me sti๏ฌ„y, โ€œif you left.โ€

Iโ€™d spent a year making inroads with her and the rest of the staff. Iโ€™d gone from being an outsider and an enemy to being accepted. I didnโ€™t want to lose that, but I couldnโ€™t back down.

โ€œHe called himself Liam,โ€ I said quietly, my gaze going to Malloryโ€™s. โ€œHe didnโ€™t tell you who he really wasโ€”or why he was here.โ€

Mrs. Laughlin took a step toward me. โ€œYou need to go.โ€ โ€œWill Blake sought out your daughter,โ€ I said, turning

back toward the woman whoโ€™d served as a steward of the Hawthorne estate for most of her life. โ€œHe would have been in his twenties. She was only sixteen. She snuck him onto the estateโ€”up to Hawthorne House, even.โ€ I didnโ€™t stop. โ€œIt was probably his idea.โ€

A pained expression forced Mrs. Laughlinโ€™s eyes closed. โ€œStop this,โ€ she begged me. โ€œPlease.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know what happened,โ€ I said, โ€œbut I do know that Will Blake hasnโ€™t been seen since. And for some reason, you and your husband let the Hawthornes adopt your grandson and pass him off as their own flesh and blood, even to the babyโ€™s mother.โ€

A high-pitched mewling sound escaped Malloryโ€™s throat. โ€œYou were trying to protect them, werenโ€™t you?โ€ I asked

Mrs. Laughlin softly. โ€œYour daughterย andย Toby. You were trying to protect them from Vincent Blake.โ€

โ€œWhat is she talking about?โ€ Eve glided back toward Mallory, then ducked down, angling her head so that her eyes were looking directly into Malloryโ€™s. โ€œYou have to tell me the truth,โ€ she continued. โ€œAll of it. Your Liamโ€ฆ he didnโ€™tย leave, did he?โ€

I saw then what she was doingโ€”what she had been doing. โ€œThatโ€™s why youโ€™re here,โ€ I realized. โ€œWhat did Vincent Blake offer you if you brought him answers?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s enough,โ€ Grayson told me sharply.

โ€œIt really, really isnโ€™t,โ€ Jameson replied, blazing by my side.

โ€œYou know what this necklace means to me, Grayson,โ€ Eve said, her fist covering the locket. โ€œYou know why I wear it.ย You know, Grayson.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t trust anyone,โ€ I said, my tone a match for hers. โ€œThat was the old manโ€™s message. His final message, Gray. Because if Eveโ€™s here, Vincent Blake might not be far behind.โ€

Eve turned her body into Graysonโ€™s, her every movement a study in grace and fury. โ€œWho cares about Tobias Hawthorneโ€™s final message?โ€ she asked, her voice shattering at the end of that question. โ€œHe didnโ€™t want me, Grayson. He chose Avery. I wasย neverย going to be enough for him. You know what thatโ€™s like, Gray. Better than anyoneโ€”you know.โ€

I could feel him slipping through my fingers, but I couldnโ€™t stop fighting. โ€œYou pushed us to ask Skye about the seal,โ€ I said, staring Eve down. โ€œYouโ€™ve been asking around about deep, dark Hawthorne family secrets. You pressed and pressed for answers on Tobyโ€™s fatherโ€”โ€

A single tear rolled down Eveโ€™s cheek.

โ€œAvery.โ€ Graysonโ€™s tone was one I recognized. This was the boy whoโ€™d been raised as the heir apparent. The one who didnโ€™t have to dirty his hands to put an adversary in their place.

Am I the enemy again, Gray?

โ€œEve has done nothing to you.โ€ Graysonโ€™s voice cut into me like a surgeonโ€™s knife. โ€œEven if what youโ€™re saying about Tobyโ€™s parentage is true, Eve is not to blame for her family.โ€

โ€œThen get her to open the locket,โ€ I said, my mouth dry.

Eve walked toward me. When she got within three feet, Oren shifted. โ€œThatโ€™s close enough.โ€

Without a word to him, or to anyone, Eve opened her locket. Inside, there was a picture of a little girl.ย Eve, I realized. Her hair was cut short and uneven, her little cheeks gaunt. โ€œNo one ever cherished her. No one ever would have put her picture in a locket.โ€ Eve met my gaze, and though she looked vulnerable, I thought I saw something else underneath that vulnerability. โ€œSo I wear this as a reminder: Even if no one else loves you, you can. Even if no one else ever puts you first,ย you can.โ€

She was standing there admitting that she was going to put herself first, but it was like Grayson couldnโ€™t see that. โ€œEnough,โ€ he ordered. โ€œThis isnโ€™t you, Avery.โ€

โ€œMaybe, Gray,โ€ Jameson countered, โ€œyou donโ€™t know her as well as you think.โ€

โ€œOut!โ€ Mrs. Laughlin boomed. โ€œAll of you, out!โ€

Not one of us moved, and the older womanโ€™s eyes narrowed.

โ€œThis is my house. Mr. Hawthorneโ€™s will granted us lifelong, rent-free tenancy.โ€ Mrs. Laughlin looked at her daughter, then at Eve, and finally she turned back to me. โ€œYou can fire me, but you canโ€™t evict me, and youย willย leave my home.โ€

โ€œLottie,โ€ Oren said quietly.

โ€œDonโ€™t youย Lottieย me, John Oren.โ€ Mrs. Laughlin glared at him. โ€œYou take your girl, you take the boysโ€”and you get out.โ€
