Oren and two of his men drove Jameson and me to Wayback Cottage. Rebecca didnโt come with us, didnโtย wantย to come with us. Thea and Xander stayed with her.
I rang the bellโagain and again until Mrs. Laughlin answered.
โGrayson and Eve,โ I said, trying to sound calmer than I felt. โAre they here?โ
Mrs. Laughlin pinned me with a look that had probably been used on generations of Hawthorne children. โTheyโre in the kitchen with my daughter.โ
I made my way there, Jameson on my heels, Oren directly to my left, his men only steps behind him. We found Eve sitting across a worn wooden table from Mallory. Grayson stood behind Eve like a wayward angel keeping watch.
Eve swiveled her gaze toward us, and I wondered if I was imagining the canny look in her eyes, imagining her assessing the situation, assessing me, before speaking. โAny updates?โ
One, I thought.ย I know that youโre related to Vincent Blake.
โI tried to get to Toby,โ Eve continued intently, โbut I couldnโt.ย Someoneย brought me back.โ
That someone was standing so close to her now. โGrayson,โ I said. โI need to talk to you.โ
Eve turned to look at him. There was something delicate about the way her hair fell off her shoulder, something almost mesmerizing about the way she lifted her eyes to
his.
โGrayson,โ I said again, my voice urgent and low.
Jameson didnโt give me the opportunity to say his brotherโs name a third time. โAvery found out something that you need to know. Outside, Gray. Now.โ
Grayson walked toward us. Eve came, too. โWhat did you find out?โ she asked.
โWhat is it youโre hoping Iโll find outโor hoping I wonโt?โ I hadnโt meant to say that out loud, but now that I had, I marked her reaction.
โWhat is that supposed to mean?โ Eve snapped, something like hurt flickering over her face.
Was that an act?ย This whole timeโhas it all been an act?ย My gaze landed on the chain around her neck, and I flashed back to the moment sheโd stepped out of my bathroom wearing nothing but a towel and a locket. Why would Eve, whoโd insisted sheโd spent her whole life with no one, wear a locket?
What was inside?
A small metal disk.ย Isaiah had said that there were five, that Vincent Blake gave them exclusively to familyโand Eve was family.
โOpen your locket,โ I said sharply. โShow me whatโs inside.โ
Eve stood very still. I moved, reaching for itโbut Grayson caught my hand. He gave me a look like a shard of ice. โWhat are you doing, Avery?โ
โVincent Blake had a son,โ I said. I hadnโt wanted to do this here, in front of Mallory and Mrs. Laughlin, but so be it. โHis name was Will. I think he was Tobyโs father. Andย this?โ I withdrew the Blake family seal, the one that had been in Tobyโs possession when he disappeared. โIt was almost certainly Willโs. Blake gave them to family members who held his favor.โ I could feel Eve watching me. Her face was blankโso carefully blank. โIsnโt that right, Eve?โ
โYou have no right,โ Mallory Laughlin snapped shrilly,
โto come in here and say any of this.ย Any of it.โ She looked past me to Mrs. Laughlin. โAre you going to just stand there and let her do this?โ she demanded, her voice going up an octave. โThis is your home!โ
โI think it would be best,โ Mrs. Laughlin told me sti๏ฌy, โif you left.โ
Iโd spent a year making inroads with her and the rest of the staff. Iโd gone from being an outsider and an enemy to being accepted. I didnโt want to lose that, but I couldnโt back down.
โHe called himself Liam,โ I said quietly, my gaze going to Malloryโs. โHe didnโt tell you who he really wasโor why he was here.โ
Mrs. Laughlin took a step toward me. โYou need to go.โ โWill Blake sought out your daughter,โ I said, turning
back toward the woman whoโd served as a steward of the Hawthorne estate for most of her life. โHe would have been in his twenties. She was only sixteen. She snuck him onto the estateโup to Hawthorne House, even.โ I didnโt stop. โIt was probably his idea.โ
A pained expression forced Mrs. Laughlinโs eyes closed. โStop this,โ she begged me. โPlease.โ
โI donโt know what happened,โ I said, โbut I do know that Will Blake hasnโt been seen since. And for some reason, you and your husband let the Hawthornes adopt your grandson and pass him off as their own flesh and blood, even to the babyโs mother.โ
A high-pitched mewling sound escaped Malloryโs throat. โYou were trying to protect them, werenโt you?โ I asked
Mrs. Laughlin softly. โYour daughterย andย Toby. You were trying to protect them from Vincent Blake.โ
โWhat is she talking about?โ Eve glided back toward Mallory, then ducked down, angling her head so that her eyes were looking directly into Malloryโs. โYou have to tell me the truth,โ she continued. โAll of it. Your Liamโฆ he didnโtย leave, did he?โ
I saw then what she was doingโwhat she had been doing. โThatโs why youโre here,โ I realized. โWhat did Vincent Blake offer you if you brought him answers?โ
โThatโs enough,โ Grayson told me sharply.
โIt really, really isnโt,โ Jameson replied, blazing by my side.
โYou know what this necklace means to me, Grayson,โ Eve said, her fist covering the locket. โYou know why I wear it.ย You know, Grayson.โ
โDonโt trust anyone,โ I said, my tone a match for hers. โThat was the old manโs message. His final message, Gray. Because if Eveโs here, Vincent Blake might not be far behind.โ
Eve turned her body into Graysonโs, her every movement a study in grace and fury. โWho cares about Tobias Hawthorneโs final message?โ she asked, her voice shattering at the end of that question. โHe didnโt want me, Grayson. He chose Avery. I wasย neverย going to be enough for him. You know what thatโs like, Gray. Better than anyoneโyou know.โ
I could feel him slipping through my fingers, but I couldnโt stop fighting. โYou pushed us to ask Skye about the seal,โ I said, staring Eve down. โYouโve been asking around about deep, dark Hawthorne family secrets. You pressed and pressed for answers on Tobyโs fatherโโ
A single tear rolled down Eveโs cheek.
โAvery.โ Graysonโs tone was one I recognized. This was the boy whoโd been raised as the heir apparent. The one who didnโt have to dirty his hands to put an adversary in their place.
Am I the enemy again, Gray?
โEve has done nothing to you.โ Graysonโs voice cut into me like a surgeonโs knife. โEven if what youโre saying about Tobyโs parentage is true, Eve is not to blame for her family.โ
โThen get her to open the locket,โ I said, my mouth dry.
Eve walked toward me. When she got within three feet, Oren shifted. โThatโs close enough.โ
Without a word to him, or to anyone, Eve opened her locket. Inside, there was a picture of a little girl.ย Eve, I realized. Her hair was cut short and uneven, her little cheeks gaunt. โNo one ever cherished her. No one ever would have put her picture in a locket.โ Eve met my gaze, and though she looked vulnerable, I thought I saw something else underneath that vulnerability. โSo I wear this as a reminder: Even if no one else loves you, you can. Even if no one else ever puts you first,ย you can.โ
She was standing there admitting that she was going to put herself first, but it was like Grayson couldnโt see that. โEnough,โ he ordered. โThis isnโt you, Avery.โ
โMaybe, Gray,โ Jameson countered, โyou donโt know her as well as you think.โ
โOut!โ Mrs. Laughlin boomed. โAll of you, out!โ
Not one of us moved, and the older womanโs eyes narrowed.
โThis is my house. Mr. Hawthorneโs will granted us lifelong, rent-free tenancy.โ Mrs. Laughlin looked at her daughter, then at Eve, and finally she turned back to me. โYou can fire me, but you canโt evict me, and youย willย leave my home.โ
โLottie,โ Oren said quietly.
โDonโt youย Lottieย me, John Oren.โ Mrs. Laughlin glared at him. โYou take your girl, you take the boysโand you get out.โ
