Chapter no 45

The Final Gambit (The Inheritance Games, 3)

We worked until almost dawn, slept briefly, woke intertwined. We talked to Nan and Zara, played with the numbers, identified the church, which wasnโ€™t even in France, let alone in Margaux. We went back to the unused objects in the bag: a steamer, a flashlight, the USB.

By midmorning, we were stuck in a loop.

As if heโ€™d divined the need for something to snap us out of it, Xander texted Jamesonโ€™s phone. Jameson held it out for me to see.ย 911.

โ€œAn emergency?โ€ I asked.

โ€œMore like a summons,โ€ Jameson told me. โ€œCome on.โ€ We made it as far as the hallway before we ran into Nash, who was leaving Libbyโ€™s room in the clothes heโ€™d worn the day before, holding a small, wiggling ball of chaos and brown fur.

โ€œI really hope you didnโ€™t try to give that incredibly adorable puppy to my sister,โ€ I told him.

โ€œHe didnโ€™t.โ€ Libby padded into the hallway wearing anย I EAT MORNING PEOPLEย shirt and black pajama pants. โ€œHe knows better. That is a Hawthorne dog.โ€ Libby reached out to stroke the puppyโ€™s ear. โ€œNash found her in an alley. Some drunk assholes were poking at her with a stick.โ€ Knowing Nash as I did, I doubted that had turned out well for the drunk assholes. โ€œHe saved her,โ€ Libby continued, letting her hand drop. โ€œThatโ€™s what he does.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know, darlinโ€™,โ€ Nash said, giving the pup a

scratch, his eyes on my sister. โ€œI was in pretty rough shape. Maybe she saved me.โ€

I thought about little Nash watching Skye with his baby brothers, watching her give them away. And then I thought about Libby taking me in.

โ€œYou get Xanderโ€™s nine-one-one?โ€ Jameson asked his brother.

โ€œSure did,โ€ Nash drawled.

โ€œNine-one-one?โ€ Libby frowned. โ€œIs Xander okay?โ€

โ€œHe needs us,โ€ Nash told my sister, allowing the puppy to lick his chin. โ€œWe each only get one a year. A text like that comes in, it doesnโ€™t matter where you are or what youโ€™re doing. You drop everything and go.โ€

โ€œXander just hasnโ€™t told us where to go yet,โ€ Jameson added.

Right on cue, Jamesonโ€™s phone buzzed; Nashโ€™s, too. A series of texts came through in quick succession. Jameson angled his phone toward me so that I could see.

Xander had sent four photographs, each containing a little drawing. The first was a heart with the wordย CAREย written in the middle of it. I scrolled to the second picture and frowned. โ€œIs that a monkey riding a bicycle?โ€

Libby moved toward Nash and took his phone from his pocket. There was something intimate about the actionโ€” the way he let her, the way she knew he would. โ€œThe monkey appears to be sayingย EEEEEE!โ€ Libby commented

Nash looked at the picture. โ€œCould be a lemur,โ€ he opined.

I shook my head and looked at the third picture: Xander had drawn a tree. The fourth picture was an elephant jumping on a pogo stick, also sayingย EEEEEE!

I looked at Jameson. โ€œDo you have any idea what this means?โ€

โ€œAs previously established, nine-one-one means Xander is calling us in,โ€ Jameson said. โ€œBy Hawthorne rules, this summons cannot be ignored. As for the picturesโ€ฆ work it out for yourself, Heiress.โ€

I looked at the pictures again. Theย careย heart. The

animals yellingย Eeee.

โ€œTreeโ€™s an oak, if that helps,โ€ Nash told me. The puppy barked.

Care. Eee. Oak. Eee.ย I thoughtโ€”and then I put it all together. โ€œYouโ€™ve got to be kidding me,โ€ I told Jameson.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Libby asked.

Jameson smirked. โ€œHawthornes never kid about karaoke.โ€
