Chapter no 31

The Final Gambit (The Inheritance Games, 3)

What did we learn?ย I tried to concentrate on that, not the threat, not the timer counting down.

Tobyโ€™s captor had referred to himself as old. Heโ€™d called me by my full name.

He played with wordsโ€”and with people. โ€œHe likes riddles,โ€ I said out loud. โ€œAnd games.โ€

I knew someone who fit that description, but billionaire Tobias Hawthorne was dead. Heโ€™d been dead for a year.

โ€œWhat precisely are we supposed to figure out?โ€ Grayson asked crisply.

I looked reflexively toward Jameson. โ€œThere must be something to find or decode,โ€ I said, โ€œjust like there was in the earlier deliveries.โ€

โ€œThe next part of the same riddle,โ€ Jameson murmured, our minds in sync.

Eve looked between the two of us. โ€œWhat riddle?โ€

โ€œTheย riddle,โ€ Jameson said. โ€œWho is he? Why is he doing this? The first two clues were straightforward enough to decode. Heโ€™s upped his ante with this installment.โ€

โ€œWe must be missing something,โ€ I said. โ€œA detail about the box or the package orโ€”โ€

โ€œI recorded the phone call.โ€ Xander held up his phone. โ€œIn case thereโ€™s a clue in something he said. Beyond thatโ€ฆโ€ โ€œWe have the combination,โ€ Jameson finished. โ€œAnd the

calendar entry.โ€

โ€œNiv,โ€ I said out loud. Moving on instinct, I checked the box for hidden compartments. There werenโ€™t any. There was nothing else on the phone, nothing that popped out

when we listened to my exchange with Tobyโ€™s captor a second time. Or a third.

โ€œCan your team trace the call?โ€ I asked Oren, trying to think ahead, trying to come at this problem from all sides. โ€œWe have the number.โ€

โ€œI can try,โ€ Oren replied evenly, โ€œbut unless our opponent is far less intelligent than he appears, the number is unregistered, and the call was routed through the internet, not a phone tower, with the signal split across a thousand IP addresses, bouncing all over the world.โ€

My throat tightened. โ€œCould the police help pin it down?โ€

โ€œWe canโ€™t call the police,โ€ Eve whispered. โ€œHe couldย kill

Toby.โ€

โ€œDiscreet inquiries could potentially be made to a trusted police contact without providing details,โ€ Oren said. โ€œUnfortunately, my three most trusted contacts have been recently transferred.โ€

There was no way that was a coincidence. Attacks on my business interests. Attempts to chip away at my security team. Paparazzi set on my every move. Police contacts transferred. I thought about what Alisa had said we were looking for.ย Wealth. Power. Connections.

โ€œPlay the recording again,โ€ I told Xander.

My BHFF did as I asked, and this time, as the conversation ended, Jameson looked to Grayson. โ€œHe said that Avery couldย callย him Luke. Not that his nameย wasย Luke.โ€

โ€œDoes that matter?โ€ I asked.

Grayson held Jamesonโ€™s gaze. โ€œIt could.โ€

Eve started to say something, but the sound of a ringing phone silenced her. It wasnโ€™t the burner phone. It was mine. My eyes darted to the caller ID.ย Thea.

I answered. โ€œIโ€™m kind of busy right now, Thea.โ€

โ€œIn that case, do you want the bad news first or the really bad news?โ€

โ€œIs Rebeccaโ€”โ€

โ€œSomeone got a picture of Eve standing outside the gates of Hawthorne House. It just went live.โ€

I winced. โ€œWas that the bad news orโ€”โ€

โ€œIt went live,โ€ Thea continued, โ€œon the internetโ€™s biggest gossip site, alongside a picture of Emily and an exposรฉ on rumors that Emily Laughlin was killed by Grayson and Jameson Hawthorne.โ€
