Chapter no 14

The Final Gambit (The Inheritance Games, 3)

Back in the library, Nash examined the envelope, the message, and the disk.

โ€œThe Rooneys donโ€™t have Toby,โ€ I announced. โ€œTheyโ€™re ruthless, and if they knew for sure Toby was alive, they would probably be making a real effort to feed his face to a pack of dogs, but Iโ€™m almost certain they donโ€™t have him.โ€

Xander raised his right hand. โ€œI have a question about faces and dogs.โ€

I shuddered. โ€œYou donโ€™t want to know.โ€

Grayson took up a perch on the edge of the tree-trunk desk, unbuttoning his suit jacket. โ€œI can likewise clear the Graysons.โ€

Eve gave him a look. โ€œTheย Graysons?โ€

โ€œMy sire and his family,โ€ Grayson clarified, his face like stone. โ€œTheyโ€™re related to Colin Anders Wright, who died in the fire. Sheffield Grayson abandoned his wife and daughters some months back.โ€

That was a lie. Sheffield Grayson was dead. Eveโ€™s half sister had killed him to save me, and Oren had covered it up. But Eve gave no sign that she knew that, and based on what sheโ€™d told us about her siblings, that tracked.

โ€œRumors place my so-called father somewhere in the Caymans,โ€ Grayson continued smoothly. โ€œIโ€™ve been keeping an eye on the rest of the family in his absence.โ€

โ€œDoes the Grayson family know about you?โ€ Jameson asked his brother. No banter, no sarcasm. He knew whatย familyย meant to Grayson.

โ€œI saw no need for them to,โ€ came the reply. โ€œBut I can

assure you that if Sheffield Graysonโ€™s wife, sister, or daughters had a hand in this, I would know.โ€

โ€œYou hired someone.โ€ Jamesonโ€™s eyes narrowed. โ€œWith what money?โ€

โ€œInvest. Cultivate. Create.โ€ Grayson didnโ€™t offer any more explanation than that before he stood. โ€œIf weโ€™ve ruled out the families of Colin Anders Wright and Kaylie Rooney, that leaves only the family of the third victim: David Golding.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll have someone look into it.โ€ Oren didnโ€™t even step out of the shadows to speak.

โ€œSeems like you do that a lot.โ€ Eve leveled a gaze in his direction.

โ€œHeiress.โ€ Jameson suddenly stopped pacing. He picked up the envelope the message had come in. โ€œThis was addressed toย you.โ€

I heard what he was saying, the possibility heโ€™d seen. โ€œWhat if Toby isnโ€™t the target of revenge?โ€ I said slowly. โ€œWhat if I am?โ€

โ€œYou have a lot of enemies?โ€ Eve asked me.

โ€œIn her position,โ€ Grayson murmured, โ€œitโ€™s hard not to.โ€ โ€œWhat if weโ€™re looking at this wrong?โ€ When Xander

paced, it wasnโ€™t in straight lines or in circles. โ€œWhat if itโ€™s not about the message? What if we should be focusing on the code?โ€

โ€œThe game,โ€ Jameson translated. โ€œWe all recognized that word trick.โ€

โ€œSure did.โ€ Nash hooked his thumbs in the pockets of his worn jeans. โ€œWeโ€™re looking for someone who knows how the old man played.โ€

โ€œWhat do you meanย how the old man played?โ€ Eve asked.

Grayson answered and kept it brief. โ€œOur grandfather liked puzzles, riddles, codes.โ€

For years, Tobias Hawthorne had laid out a challenge for his grandsons every Saturday morningโ€”a game to play, a

multi-step puzzle to be solved.

โ€œHe liked testing us,โ€ Nash drawled. โ€œMaking the rules.

Watching us dance.โ€

โ€œNash has granddaddy issues,โ€ Xander confided to Eve. โ€œItโ€™s a tragic yet engrossing tale ofโ€”โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t want to be finishing that sentence, little brother.โ€ There wasnโ€™t anything explicitly dangerous or threatening in Nashโ€™s tone, but Xander was no dummy.

โ€œSure donโ€™t!โ€ he agreed.

My thoughts raced. โ€œIf weโ€™re looking for someone who knows Tobias Hawthorneโ€™s games, someone dangerous and bitter with a grudge against meโ€ฆโ€

โ€œSkye.โ€ Jameson and Grayson said their motherโ€™s name at once. Trying to kill me hadnโ€™t worked out too well for her. But given that Sheffield Grayson had framed her for a murder attempt she hadnโ€™t committed,ย notย trying to kill me hadnโ€™t worked out too well for Skye Hawthorne, either.

What if this was her next play?

โ€œWe need to confront her,โ€ Jameson said immediately. โ€œTalk to herโ€”in person.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m going to have to veto that idea.โ€ Nash strolled toward Jameson, his pace unhurried.

โ€œHow does that classic proverb go?โ€ Jameson mused. โ€œYouโ€™re not the boss of me? Itโ€™s something like that. No, wait, I remember! Itโ€™sย Youโ€™re not the boss of me, wanker.โ€

โ€œExcellent use of British slang,โ€ Xander commented. Jameson shrugged. โ€œIโ€™m a man of the world now.โ€

โ€œJamieโ€™s right.โ€ Grayson managed to say that without grimacing. โ€œThe only way weโ€™ll get anything out of Skye is face-to-face.โ€

No one could hurt Grayson, hurt any of them, like Skye could. โ€œEven if she is behind this,โ€ I said, โ€œsheโ€™ll deny everything.โ€

That was what Skye did. In her mind, she was always the victim, and when it came to her sons, she knew just how to twist the knife.

โ€œWhat if you show her the disk?โ€ Eve suggested quietly. โ€œIf she recognizes it, maybe you can use it to get her talking.โ€

โ€œIf Skye had any idea what that disk was worth,โ€ I replied, โ€œshe definitely wouldnโ€™t have sent it to me.โ€ Skye Hawthorne had been almost entirely disinherited. No way was she parting with anything valuable.

โ€œSo if she makes a play for the disk,โ€ Grayson stated archly, โ€œweโ€™ll know that sheโ€™s aware of its value, and ergo, not behind the abduction.โ€

I stared Grayson down. โ€œIโ€™m not letting any of you do this without me.โ€

โ€œAvery.โ€ Oren stepped out of the shadows and gave me a look that was part paternal, part military commander. โ€œI strongly advise against any kind of confrontation with Skye Hawthorne.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve found duct tape more effective than advice, myself,โ€ Nash told Oren conversationally.

โ€œItโ€™s settled, then!โ€ Xander said brightly. โ€œFamily reunion, Hawthorne style!โ€

โ€œUh, Xander?โ€ Max appeared in the doorway, looking rumpled. She held up a phone. โ€œYou left this on your nightstand.โ€

Nightstand?ย I shot Max a look. Iโ€™d known that she and Xander were friends, but that wasย notย a friendly kind of rumple. โ€œRebecca texted,โ€ Max told Xander, conspicuously ignoring my look. โ€œSheโ€™s on her way here.โ€

I was distracted enough by the idea of Max and Xander spending the night together that it took a moment for the rest to penetrate.ย Rebecca.ย Seeing Eve would destroy Emilyโ€™s sister.

โ€œNew plan,โ€ Xander announced. โ€œIโ€™m skipping family reunion. The rest of you can report back.โ€

Eve frowned. โ€œWhoโ€™s Rebecca?โ€
