โYOUโREย sure you donโt mind spending your New Yearโs Eve out here instead of with the guys?โ Hazel asks as we glide around the ice that night, hand in hand. Her hair flies behind her, fluttering in the wind, and the tip of her nose is red from the cold. Under the stars in the sky, her eyes glow bright and mesmerizing.
โYouโre sure your ankle feels okay?โ
Her laugh is a puff of air in the cold night. โAlright. Point taken.โ
I move so Iโm facing her, skating backward, holding both her hands, and she tilts her head at me with narrowed eyes. โSomething changed during the game tonight.โ
โCaught that, did you?โ
She smiles, waiting, and Iโm quiet as we circle the rink.
โEveryone compares me to my dad. I look like him, I play like him.โ I catch myself. โOr, I used to.โ
Her hand squeezes mine.
โAnd I believed it, that I wasnโt just like him but that my life would be the same as his. Iโd be old and miserable and alone and obsessed with hockey, and any woman who got to know me would see whatever ugly thing women see in my dad and walk away.โ
My heart beats with urgency, blood whooshing in my ears. Iโve never said these things out loud.
Hazel gives me a soft, kind smile, though, and I think maybe she knew all these things. We never talked about them, but somehow she knew, and instead of being scared that she can see right through me, Iโm relieved and grateful.
โBut Iโm not that guy. I just let myself think that.โ My throat feels thick. โI never thought I would be a good captain, but I want to be, and I think part of being a good leader might be seeing what people want and who they are, instead of who theyโre told to be.โ
Hazel hums. โYouโre a good captain.โ
Affection and pride flood my chest. โBecause of you, I am.โ
She looks down, smiling to herself, and I wonder if her heartโs exploding with this feeling, too.
โItโs New Yearโs Eve,โ she says quietly. โI know.โ
She sends me a side-long glance, and not for the first time, I wish I could read her mind. โOur deal was supposed to end tomorrow.โ
My heart stops. We said it wasnโt fake anymore, but maybe sheโs changed her mind. โDo you want it to?โ
โNo.โ Her answer is immediate as she turns to me, eyes roaming my face, searching my gaze. โI donโt want it to be over.โ Her lips part and she looks like she wants to say more, but she just bites her lip again. โI donโt want it to end.โ
A possessive ache fills me. Iโm so happy with her that it hurts, so I put my hands on her waist and skate us to a stop, holding on tight to her because she isnโt great at braking.
โI donโt want it to end, either,โ I tell her, brushing her hair back, looking down into her eyes. โLetโs keep it going.โ
โFor how long?โ She looks so hopeful but uncertain that my heart breaks all over again.
โFor as long as you want, Hartley, Iโm yours. Even longer, probably.โ
Forever, I hope.
โI need to tell you something,โ she whispers, and her eyes flash with worry and nerves.
When I take her hands, theyโre shaking.
โI love you,โ she says quietly, searching my gaze.
All I can hear is my pulse beating in my ears; all I can see is Hazel.
โI was scared to say it. Iโm still scared, butโโ She cuts herself off, biting her lip, studying me as my heart does somersaults. โI always want you to know youโre loved.โ
Christ, my heart. My sweet, terrified Hazel is handing me her fragile trust to hold in the palm of my hand. Iโll do anything to protect it.
โI do.โ Emotion surges through me, so strong it hurts. โIโve known for a long time.โ
โYou have?โ Her brows lift.
I nod. My hand slips to her cheek, and her skin is cold under my touch. โI was waiting until you were ready.โ
She holds my eyes, swallowing. โYouโre so patient.โ โYouโre worth the wait.โ
The furrow in her brow eases, and she lets out a long breath. โArenโt you going to tell me you love me, too?โ
My mouth tips into a smile. โYou know I do.โ She nods. โYeah. I know you do.โ
I lean down to kiss her, hands in her hair.
โI love you,โ I say anyway, and she smiles against my lips.
This must be what it feels like to have everything Iโve ever wanted. โI love you, too. Happy New Year, Rory.โ
โHappy New Year, Hazel.โ
