Chapter no 47 – SHANE

The Dixon Rule (Campus Diaries Book 2)

My real girlfriend

Iย BARREL THROUGH THEย SYCAMORE LOBBY INTO THE BACK COURTYARDย and race

down the path toward our building. I gave Richard at the desk about three seconds to answer when I asked, โ€œWhatโ€™s up with the police car?โ€

All he managed to get out was โ€œThere was an incident with Diana and

โ€”โ€ before I was sprinting to Red Birch.

I take the stairs two at a time. Even over my thundering footsteps and thudding pulse, I hear Niallโ€™s muffled voice. โ€œWalk quiet!โ€

I ignore him. At Dianaโ€™s door, I push on the handle, but itโ€™s locked, so I start banging against the door.

โ€œDixon, let me in. Are you okay?โ€

Footsteps approach the door. Then it swings open, and I see Gigi. โ€œWhat happened?โ€ I say instantly. โ€œWhere is she?โ€

โ€œIn the shower.โ€

Gigiโ€™s grim face tells me whatever happened tonight wasnโ€™t good. I storm inside, peering past her shoulders to find Mya Bell, Gigiโ€™s former roommate, on Dianaโ€™s couch. I give a terse nod of greeting. She flicks up her hand in a quick wave.

โ€œWas it that fucking asshole?โ€ I demand. โ€œPercy?โ€

Gigi nods. โ€œYeah. He was basically, like, casing the apartment when we got here.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean, casing?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know, thatโ€™s the best way I can explain it. He wasnโ€™tย onย the property, but a few yards away from the Meadow Hill sign.โ€ Anger colors her cheeks. โ€œDiana spotted his car. She wanted to get out and confront him.โ€

โ€œI hope you didnโ€™t fucking let her.โ€

โ€œOf course not. We went right in and called the cops. They got here within three minutes, which was impressive. But I guess thereโ€™s no crime in Hastings. They were probably just sitting around waiting for something to happen. The cops questioned Diana, then went to find Percy, who denied breaking the restraining order. He asserted he was beyond the minimum distance.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s supposed to stay a hundred yards away from her. If he was parked near the entrance of the driveway, thatโ€™s not a hundred yards.โ€

โ€œHe claimed where he was parked in relation to Red Birch itself andย thisย apartment is exactly one hundred and eight yards. Supposedly he measured it using satellite imagery.โ€

โ€œSlimy prick.โ€

โ€œYeah, Diana was pissed. So now itโ€™s a matter of semantics, and the restraining order is being revised to include this apartment as well as the main building. It was a whole shitshow, and Diana just had enough. Which is why I think you should leave.โ€

I gape at her. โ€œLike hell Iโ€™m leaving. Iโ€™m going to be right here when she gets out of the shower.โ€

โ€œShane,โ€ Mya says tentatively. I glance over. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to put on the act anymore,โ€ Gigi explains. โ€œWe know this isnโ€™t a real relationship.โ€ She gestures from me toward the bathroom beyond the hall.

โ€œShe told us everything,โ€ Mya confirms.

โ€œAnd I get it,โ€ Gigi says quietly. โ€œThat was really nice of you to pretend to be her boyfriend while Percy was living here. And you did good, convincing her to report what happened to her. Butโ€ฆโ€

โ€œBut what?โ€ I snap. โ€œBut you led her on.โ€

My chest squeezes. โ€œIs that what she thinks?โ€

โ€œWhat else is she supposed to think?โ€ Gigiโ€™s gray eyes flash at me. โ€œShe told you she had feelings for you, and you ditched her to go see your ex- girlfriend.โ€

โ€œYeah, for closure,โ€ I mutter.

โ€œWhat closure do you need? Didnโ€™t she dump your ass a year ago?โ€ Mya remarks from the couch.

I scowl at her. โ€œCan we stop with the commentary?โ€ I scrape both hands over my scalp. โ€œYes, I screwed up, and I know sheโ€™s pissed off. But thereโ€™s nothing between me and Lynsey. I made it very clear to her tonight that I donโ€™t want to get back together.โ€

โ€œRegardless, I donโ€™t know if tonight is the night to be dealing withโ€ฆ whatever this is. This fake relationshipโ€”โ€

โ€œIt isnโ€™t fake,โ€ I burst out. โ€œItโ€™s real as fuck. Do you not get that? I love her.โ€

Gigi blinks. โ€œOh. Seriously?โ€

I scrub a hand over my face, uncomfortable under Gigiโ€™s and Myaโ€™s surprised scrutiny. My feelings for Diana have been percolating for months now, but this is the first time Iโ€™ve been able to give them a label.ย Love. I fucking love this girl.

I didnโ€™t expect the realization to strike in front of an audience, and I wish her friends would just leave already and let me go see my girl.

โ€œSeriously,โ€ I mutter to Gigi. โ€œSo do me a favor and let me take it from here. Please.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not leaving.โ€

โ€œYou said sheโ€™s okay, right? Sheโ€™s pissed but not shaken up. He didnโ€™t touch her. So, please, just go. I really appreciate that you drove her home and stayed with her while the cops were here, but Iโ€™m asking you, very nicely, to go now so I can be alone with the woman I love.โ€

After a long beat, Gigi nods. โ€œFine. But Iโ€™m calling her in an hour, and if she sounds even the least bit upset, Iโ€™m driving back and kicking you out

myself.โ€

โ€œFair. And I mean itโ€”thank you for being here for her. Youโ€™re a good friend. Both of you.โ€

After they leave, I lock the door and return to the living room. I groan my frustration into my palms while trying to ignore the little spark of fear that asks, What if Gigi and Mya hadnโ€™t been with her? What if he somehow found a way toโ€”

No, I canโ€™t even think about that.

But I should have been there, damn it. โ€œSo you love me.โ€

I look up and find Diana standing in the hall doorway. Sheโ€™s wrapped in that pink towel she was wearing the first time I saw her in this building. Her cheeks are red from the shower. She walks toward me on bare feet.

โ€œYou heard that, huh?โ€ I say ruefully.

โ€œYep.โ€ Her green eyes sweep over me. โ€œDid you mean it?โ€ โ€œDo I ever say anything I donโ€™t mean?โ€

She shrugs. โ€œI donโ€™t know. It sure looked like you meant it when you chose your ex over me.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t choose her over you. I know it seems like that, but I needed to go with her tonight. I had a suspicion I needed to confirm.โ€

โ€œWhat suspicion?โ€

โ€œThat my relationship with Lynsey was not as good as I thought it was.โ€ My words bring a twinkle of humor to her eyes. She bites her lip.

โ€œAre you trying not to laugh?โ€ I demand.

โ€œSort of. I mean, it was so obvious. From everything youโ€™ve said about her, it sounds like the relationship was the Lynsey Show and you were just a supporting cast member.โ€

โ€œI see that now. And I wanted to talk to her tonight so I could tell her all that. And to make sure she knows I donโ€™t want to get back together.โ€

โ€œBut she tried to, didnโ€™t she? Just like I said she would.โ€ โ€œI had a feeling she would too,โ€ I admit.

Diana glares at me. โ€œAnd yet you acted like the idea wasย so

preposterous when I raised it.โ€

โ€œLook, when she said she broke up with Tyreek, it occurred to me she might try to rekindle things, but thatโ€™s not why I wanted to see her.โ€

โ€œReally. You didnโ€™t want your little ego boost from knowing your ex is dying to get you back?โ€

โ€œNo. I didnโ€™t. I needed to have that final moment with her. We were together for four years. I wanted her to know that we werenโ€™t right for each other and that Iโ€™ve fallen in love with my girlfriend. Myย realย girlfriend.โ€

Diana is biting her lip again. But the smile cannot be contained. It bursts through, lighting her entire face. โ€œI donโ€™t think youโ€™re lying to me.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not,โ€ I say softly. โ€œI donโ€™t want anybody else, Dixon. I want you.โ€ โ€œWhy?โ€

I furrow my brow.

โ€œIโ€™m serious. Why do you want me?โ€ Sheโ€™s chewing on her bottom lip, and I can practically see the insecurities rolling off her. โ€œIโ€™m drama, remember? I needed to tone myself down before meeting your familyโ€”โ€

My chest clenches. โ€œFuck. Iโ€™m so sorry I ever gave you the idea that I wanted you to change yourself.โ€

She clutches the top of her towel to keep it in place. โ€œI wonโ€™t,โ€ she says, unwavering. โ€œChange myself, that is. Iโ€™m melodramatic and weird and I argue a lot, and thatโ€™s my personality. If that scares someoneโ€”โ€

โ€œDoesnโ€™t scare me,โ€ I interject. โ€œI donโ€™t want you to change. I want you for you. Drama and all.โ€ I grin at her. โ€œSo will you please be my real girlfriend?โ€

Diana plants one hand on her hip. โ€œIโ€™ll have to think about it.โ€ โ€œGonna make me sweat, huh?โ€ I chuckle.

โ€œFor a little while. But Iโ€™m not mad at you anymore.โ€ โ€œGood.โ€

โ€œAndโ€ฆโ€ She lifts a brow. โ€œI might be falling for you too.โ€ โ€œFalling?โ€ I feign outrage. โ€œBut Iโ€™ve already fallen.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not telling you I love you on the night that you chose to go with your ex-girlfriend.โ€

โ€œFine. I will await it with bated breath.โ€ I approach her towel-clad frame and touch her cheek. โ€œAre you okay? Gigi told me what happened

with Percy.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine.โ€ She shakes her head in disbelief. โ€œI just canโ€™t believe his arrogance. This sulking asshole sitting there in his car. He told the cops he was out for a drive and justย happenedย to find himself at Meadow Hill, so he pulled over because he wanted to reminisce about our relationship. According to him, there was no malicious intent. It wasnโ€™t meant to be a threat.โ€

โ€œBullshit.โ€

โ€œI know. But the cops arenโ€™t going to do anything because whoever wrote up the restraining order wasnโ€™t clear in their language, so heโ€™s off on a technicality. He didnโ€™t break it. But either way, Iโ€™m calling Detective Wendt in the morning.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Iโ€™m not letting this creep anywhere near you. If he shows up here again, heโ€™s gonna have a word with Shane Junior and Shane the Third.โ€ I raise my right fist and then the left.

โ€œWe need better names for your fists,โ€ Diana says frankly.

โ€œI know. In my defense, Iโ€™ve never called them anything before, so I was sort of winging it.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ll brainstorm.โ€

โ€œMaybe bring it up at the next HOA meeting,โ€ I suggest. โ€œGood idea.โ€ Sheโ€™s smiling.

I open my arms. The moment she steps into them, her towel falls to the floor.

I snicker and peer down. โ€œOh. The seduction has started?โ€

She snorts. โ€œIโ€™m not seducing you. Butโ€ฆnow that Iโ€™m nakedโ€ฆIย guess

you can atone for tonightโ€™s sins and give me an orgasm.โ€

Chuckling, I pick up her naked body, walk to the kitchen counter, and set her ass down on it. โ€œI shall begin my atonement.โ€
