My real girlfriend
Iย BARREL THROUGH THEย SYCAMORE LOBBY INTO THE BACK COURTYARDย and race
down the path toward our building. I gave Richard at the desk about three seconds to answer when I asked, โWhatโs up with the police car?โ
All he managed to get out was โThere was an incident with Diana and
โโ before I was sprinting to Red Birch.
I take the stairs two at a time. Even over my thundering footsteps and thudding pulse, I hear Niallโs muffled voice. โWalk quiet!โ
I ignore him. At Dianaโs door, I push on the handle, but itโs locked, so I start banging against the door.
โDixon, let me in. Are you okay?โ
Footsteps approach the door. Then it swings open, and I see Gigi. โWhat happened?โ I say instantly. โWhere is she?โ
โIn the shower.โ
Gigiโs grim face tells me whatever happened tonight wasnโt good. I storm inside, peering past her shoulders to find Mya Bell, Gigiโs former roommate, on Dianaโs couch. I give a terse nod of greeting. She flicks up her hand in a quick wave.
โWas it that fucking asshole?โ I demand. โPercy?โ
Gigi nods. โYeah. He was basically, like, casing the apartment when we got here.โ
โWhat do you mean, casing?โ
โI donโt know, thatโs the best way I can explain it. He wasnโtย onย the property, but a few yards away from the Meadow Hill sign.โ Anger colors her cheeks. โDiana spotted his car. She wanted to get out and confront him.โ
โI hope you didnโt fucking let her.โ
โOf course not. We went right in and called the cops. They got here within three minutes, which was impressive. But I guess thereโs no crime in Hastings. They were probably just sitting around waiting for something to happen. The cops questioned Diana, then went to find Percy, who denied breaking the restraining order. He asserted he was beyond the minimum distance.โ
โHeโs supposed to stay a hundred yards away from her. If he was parked near the entrance of the driveway, thatโs not a hundred yards.โ
โHe claimed where he was parked in relation to Red Birch itself andย thisย apartment is exactly one hundred and eight yards. Supposedly he measured it using satellite imagery.โ
โSlimy prick.โ
โYeah, Diana was pissed. So now itโs a matter of semantics, and the restraining order is being revised to include this apartment as well as the main building. It was a whole shitshow, and Diana just had enough. Which is why I think you should leave.โ
I gape at her. โLike hell Iโm leaving. Iโm going to be right here when she gets out of the shower.โ
โShane,โ Mya says tentatively. I glance over. โWhat?โ
โYou donโt have to put on the act anymore,โ Gigi explains. โWe know this isnโt a real relationship.โ She gestures from me toward the bathroom beyond the hall.
โShe told us everything,โ Mya confirms.
โAnd I get it,โ Gigi says quietly. โThat was really nice of you to pretend to be her boyfriend while Percy was living here. And you did good, convincing her to report what happened to her. Butโฆโ
โBut what?โ I snap. โBut you led her on.โ
My chest squeezes. โIs that what she thinks?โ
โWhat else is she supposed to think?โ Gigiโs gray eyes flash at me. โShe told you she had feelings for you, and you ditched her to go see your ex- girlfriend.โ
โYeah, for closure,โ I mutter.
โWhat closure do you need? Didnโt she dump your ass a year ago?โ Mya remarks from the couch.
I scowl at her. โCan we stop with the commentary?โ I scrape both hands over my scalp. โYes, I screwed up, and I know sheโs pissed off. But thereโs nothing between me and Lynsey. I made it very clear to her tonight that I donโt want to get back together.โ
โRegardless, I donโt know if tonight is the night to be dealing withโฆ whatever this is. This fake relationshipโโ
โIt isnโt fake,โ I burst out. โItโs real as fuck. Do you not get that? I love her.โ
Gigi blinks. โOh. Seriously?โ
I scrub a hand over my face, uncomfortable under Gigiโs and Myaโs surprised scrutiny. My feelings for Diana have been percolating for months now, but this is the first time Iโve been able to give them a label.ย Love. I fucking love this girl.
I didnโt expect the realization to strike in front of an audience, and I wish her friends would just leave already and let me go see my girl.
โSeriously,โ I mutter to Gigi. โSo do me a favor and let me take it from here. Please.โ
โIโm not leaving.โ
โYou said sheโs okay, right? Sheโs pissed but not shaken up. He didnโt touch her. So, please, just go. I really appreciate that you drove her home and stayed with her while the cops were here, but Iโm asking you, very nicely, to go now so I can be alone with the woman I love.โ
After a long beat, Gigi nods. โFine. But Iโm calling her in an hour, and if she sounds even the least bit upset, Iโm driving back and kicking you out
myself.โ
โFair. And I mean itโthank you for being here for her. Youโre a good friend. Both of you.โ
After they leave, I lock the door and return to the living room. I groan my frustration into my palms while trying to ignore the little spark of fear that asks, What if Gigi and Mya hadnโt been with her? What if he somehow found a way toโ
No, I canโt even think about that.
But I should have been there, damn it. โSo you love me.โ
I look up and find Diana standing in the hall doorway. Sheโs wrapped in that pink towel she was wearing the first time I saw her in this building. Her cheeks are red from the shower. She walks toward me on bare feet.
โYou heard that, huh?โ I say ruefully.
โYep.โ Her green eyes sweep over me. โDid you mean it?โ โDo I ever say anything I donโt mean?โ
She shrugs. โI donโt know. It sure looked like you meant it when you chose your ex over me.โ
โI didnโt choose her over you. I know it seems like that, but I needed to go with her tonight. I had a suspicion I needed to confirm.โ
โWhat suspicion?โ
โThat my relationship with Lynsey was not as good as I thought it was.โ My words bring a twinkle of humor to her eyes. She bites her lip.
โAre you trying not to laugh?โ I demand.
โSort of. I mean, it was so obvious. From everything youโve said about her, it sounds like the relationship was the Lynsey Show and you were just a supporting cast member.โ
โI see that now. And I wanted to talk to her tonight so I could tell her all that. And to make sure she knows I donโt want to get back together.โ
โBut she tried to, didnโt she? Just like I said she would.โ โI had a feeling she would too,โ I admit.
Diana glares at me. โAnd yet you acted like the idea wasย so
preposterous when I raised it.โ
โLook, when she said she broke up with Tyreek, it occurred to me she might try to rekindle things, but thatโs not why I wanted to see her.โ
โReally. You didnโt want your little ego boost from knowing your ex is dying to get you back?โ
โNo. I didnโt. I needed to have that final moment with her. We were together for four years. I wanted her to know that we werenโt right for each other and that Iโve fallen in love with my girlfriend. Myย realย girlfriend.โ
Diana is biting her lip again. But the smile cannot be contained. It bursts through, lighting her entire face. โI donโt think youโre lying to me.โ
โIโm not,โ I say softly. โI donโt want anybody else, Dixon. I want you.โ โWhy?โ
I furrow my brow.
โIโm serious. Why do you want me?โ Sheโs chewing on her bottom lip, and I can practically see the insecurities rolling off her. โIโm drama, remember? I needed to tone myself down before meeting your familyโโ
My chest clenches. โFuck. Iโm so sorry I ever gave you the idea that I wanted you to change yourself.โ
She clutches the top of her towel to keep it in place. โI wonโt,โ she says, unwavering. โChange myself, that is. Iโm melodramatic and weird and I argue a lot, and thatโs my personality. If that scares someoneโโ
โDoesnโt scare me,โ I interject. โI donโt want you to change. I want you for you. Drama and all.โ I grin at her. โSo will you please be my real girlfriend?โ
Diana plants one hand on her hip. โIโll have to think about it.โ โGonna make me sweat, huh?โ I chuckle.
โFor a little while. But Iโm not mad at you anymore.โ โGood.โ
โAndโฆโ She lifts a brow. โI might be falling for you too.โ โFalling?โ I feign outrage. โBut Iโve already fallen.โ
โIโm not telling you I love you on the night that you chose to go with your ex-girlfriend.โ
โFine. I will await it with bated breath.โ I approach her towel-clad frame and touch her cheek. โAre you okay? Gigi told me what happened
with Percy.โ
โIโm fine.โ She shakes her head in disbelief. โI just canโt believe his arrogance. This sulking asshole sitting there in his car. He told the cops he was out for a drive and justย happenedย to find himself at Meadow Hill, so he pulled over because he wanted to reminisce about our relationship. According to him, there was no malicious intent. It wasnโt meant to be a threat.โ
โBullshit.โ
โI know. But the cops arenโt going to do anything because whoever wrote up the restraining order wasnโt clear in their language, so heโs off on a technicality. He didnโt break it. But either way, Iโm calling Detective Wendt in the morning.โ
โDonโt worry, Iโm not letting this creep anywhere near you. If he shows up here again, heโs gonna have a word with Shane Junior and Shane the Third.โ I raise my right fist and then the left.
โWe need better names for your fists,โ Diana says frankly.
โI know. In my defense, Iโve never called them anything before, so I was sort of winging it.โ
โWeโll brainstorm.โ
โMaybe bring it up at the next HOA meeting,โ I suggest. โGood idea.โ Sheโs smiling.
I open my arms. The moment she steps into them, her towel falls to the floor.
I snicker and peer down. โOh. The seduction has started?โ
She snorts. โIโm not seducing you. Butโฆnow that Iโm nakedโฆIย guess
you can atone for tonightโs sins and give me an orgasm.โ
Chuckling, I pick up her naked body, walk to the kitchen counter, and set her ass down on it. โI shall begin my atonement.โ
