Chapter no 32

The Deal (Off-Campus, #1)

Garrett

THE TEMPERATURE SEEMSย to have dropped twenty degrees from when I walked into Bristol House to when I stormed out of it. A frigid gust of wind blasts me in the face and chills the tips of my ears as I trudge toward the parking lot.

See?ย Thisย is why I avoid the whole girlfriend drama. I should be over the fucking moon tonight because the team crushed Harvard. Instead, Iโ€™m pissed off and frustrated and more upset than I expected to be. Hannahโ€™s rightโ€”we were just fooling around. Same way I was fooling around with Kendall, or the chick before her, or the chick before that. I didnโ€™t even bat an eye when I ended it with any of them, so why the hell am I so bummed right now?

Thank fuck I got out of there, though. I had been seconds away from making a complete fool of myself. Saying things I shouldnโ€™t be saying, maybe evenย begging. Jesus. If thatโ€™s not a sign of some serious pussy- whipping right there then I donโ€™t know what is.

Iโ€™m halfway to my Jeep when I hear Hannah call out my name.

My chest clenches. I turn around and see her racing down the path from Bristol to the lot. Sheโ€™s still in her PJโ€™sโ€”plaid pants and a black T-shirt with yellow music notes decaled on the front.

Iโ€™m tempted to keep walking, but the sight of her bare arms and cold- flushed cheeks pisses me off even more than our fight had. โ€œJesus Christ, Hannah,โ€ I mutter when she reaches me. โ€œYouโ€™re gonna catch a cold.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a myth,โ€ she shoots back. โ€œCold weather doesnโ€™t cause colds.โ€

But sheโ€™s visibly shivering, and when she wraps her arms around herself and starts rubbing her bare skin to keep warm, I rumble in annoyance and hurriedly unzip my jacket.

Gritting my teeth, I drape the coat over her shoulders. โ€œHere.โ€

โ€œThanks.โ€ She looks as annoyed as I feel. โ€œWhat the hell is wrong with you, Garrett? You canโ€™t just storm off in the middle of a serious discussion!โ€

โ€œThere was nothing left to discuss.โ€

โ€œBullshit.โ€ She angrily shakes her head. โ€œYou didnโ€™t even let me talk!โ€ โ€œYes, I did,โ€ I answer flatly. โ€œAnd trust me, you said plenty.โ€

โ€œI can barely rememberย whatย I said. You know why? Because you totally caught me off-guard and didnโ€™t even give me a second toย thinkย about it.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s there to think about? Youโ€™re either into me, or youโ€™re not.โ€

Hannah makes a frustrated noise. โ€œYouโ€™re not being fair again. Just becauseย youย suddenly decide youโ€™re ready for a relationship and that we should be together doesnโ€™t mean that Iโ€™m going to squeal like a sorority girl and say,ย wheee, yay!ย You clearly had time to think about it, and absorb it, but you didnโ€™t give me any time at all. You just barged in and made accusations and ran out.โ€

I experience a pang of guilt. She has a point. Iย didย come over tonight fully knowing what I wanted from her.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry I didnโ€™t tell you about the Justin date,โ€ she says quietly. โ€œBut Iโ€™m not going to apologize for needing more than five frickinโ€™ seconds to think about the possibility of you and me being a couple.โ€

My breath comes out in a white puff that quickly gets carried away by the wind. โ€œIโ€™m sorry I ran off,โ€ I concede. โ€œBut Iโ€™m not sorry that I want to be with you.โ€

Those beautiful green eyes probe my face. โ€œDo you still want that?โ€ I nod. Then I gulp. โ€œDo you?โ€

โ€œDepends.โ€ She slants her head. โ€œWill we be exclusive?โ€

โ€œFuck yeah,โ€ I say without hesitation. The thought of her seeing anyone else is like a machete to the gut.

โ€œAre you okay with taking it slow?โ€ She shifts awkwardly. โ€œBecause with the showcase coming up, and the holidays, and exams, and your game scheduleโ€ฆweโ€™ll both start to get busy and I canโ€™t promise to see you every second of the day.โ€

โ€œWe see each other when we see each other,โ€ I say simply.

Iโ€™m surprised by how calm I sound, how composed Iโ€™m staying when thereโ€™s a herd of excited butterflies thumping in my stomach and shouting

hells yeahย at top-volume. Jeez. Iโ€™m about to complicate my life by inviting a girlfriend into it, yet somehow Iโ€™m one hundred percent cool with that.

โ€œThen okay.โ€ Hannah smiles at me. โ€œLetโ€™s make it official.โ€

A dark cloud obscures some of my happiness. โ€œWhat about Justin?โ€ โ€œWhat about him?โ€

โ€œYou told him youโ€™d go out with him,โ€ I say through clenched teeth. โ€œActually, I canceled the date before I came out here.โ€

The dumb butterflies inside me take flight again. โ€œYou did?โ€ She nods.

โ€œSo youโ€™re not all hot for him anymore?โ€

Humor dances in her eyes. โ€œIโ€™m hot forย you, Garrett. Only you.โ€

Just like that, my anxiety dissolves into a burst of pure joy that brings a grin to my lips. โ€œDamn right you are.โ€

Rolling her eyes, she moves in and rubs her cold cheek against my chin. โ€œNow can we please go inside? Iโ€™m freezing my butt off and I need my fluffer to warm me up.โ€

I narrow my eyes. โ€œExcuse me?โ€

She blinks innocently. โ€œOh, Iโ€™m sorry. Did I say fluffer?โ€ Her smile lights up her whole face. โ€œI meantย boyfriend.โ€

Sweetest words Iโ€™ve ever heard in my life.
