There was no light, no color, and I floated in there for a while, untethered, hollow and cold. I didnโt think. I didnโt feel. I just existed in the nothingnessโฆ
Until I saw a speck of silvery light that seemed a world away from me. The illumination throbbed, and with each beat, it expanded. Wispy tendrils seeped out from the edges, stretching across the void. Slowly, I drifted toward it.
Sound came back without warning. A voice so deep and powerful that it found me in the nothing, caught hold of me so I was no longer slipping toward the silvery light. The voice held me captive.
โDrink. Keep drinking,โ it ordered. โThatโs it. Keep swallowing.
Drink, Princess, drink for meโฆโ
The words repeated themselves over and over for what felt like an eternity before they faded away, and I was once again in the stillness. There was no silvery light now. Nothing but a warm and empty darkness with the sweet, comforting scent ofโฆlilacs.
I stayed there until flashes of muted color surrounded me. Reds. Silvers. Golds. They swirled together, and I slipped through them, falling back through the nights, through the years, until I was small and helpless, standing before my father.
I could see him clearly, his hair a coppery red in the lamplight. His square jaw covered in several days-worth of a beard. Straight nose. Eyes the color of pine.
โWhat a pretty, little flower. What a pretty poppy.โ Papa leaned in, kissing the crown of my head. โI love you more than all the stars in the sky.โ
โI love you more than all the fish in the sea.โ
โThatโs my girl.โ Papaโs hands trembled on my cheeks. โCora?โ
Momma came forward, her face pale. โYou shouldโve known she would find a way down here.โ She glanced over her shoulder. โYou trust him?โ
โI do,โ he said as Momma took my hand in hers. โHeโs going to lead us to safetyโฆ.โ
Wind roared like thunder through the inn, coming from a place that was not here. Voices rose, ones that didnโt come from Papa or Momma, but from above, somewhere beyond the whirlpool of colors at the other end of the nothingness.
โWho remains?โ a male voice reached me, the same one that had found me when I was drifting toward the silvery light, but it was now hoarse and faint, weary and weakened.
โJust us,โ another deep voice replied, this one strained. โWe donโt have to worry about the guards. I think Jasper decided it would be best if they wereโฆno more.โ
โMy father?โ
โNot an issue for now.โ There was a pause. โWe wonโt make it back to the Cove, but there isโฆโ He faded out briefly. โWeโll have to make it work just in case sheโฆ Do you think you can move?โ
There wasnโt an answer for a long moment. โIโฆI donโt know.โ I fell again, slipping back through the years once more.
โStay with your momma, baby.โ Papa touched my cheeks, drawing me away from the voices. โStay with her and find your brother. Iโll be back for you soon.โ
Papa rose and turned to the doorโto the man who stood there, watching from the small crack between the panels. โDo you see him?โ
The man at the door, whose hair reminded me of the beaches of the Stroud Sea, nodded. โHe knows youโre here.โ
โHe knows sheโs here.โ
โEither way, heโs leading them here. If they get in hereโฆโ
โWe donโt let that happen,โ Papa said, reaching for the hilt of a sword. โThey canโt have her. We canโt let that happen.โ
โNo,โ the man agreed softly, looking over his shoulder at me with strange blue eyes. โI wonโt.โ
โCome, Poppy.โ Momma pulled on my handโ
The voice pulled me beyond the colors and the nothing.
โI donโt know what will happen from here.โ He sounded closer, but even more tired than the last time his voice had reached me. Each word seemed to require an effort that he was quickly losing the ability to give. โShe breathes. Her heart beats. She lives.โ
โThat is all that matters,โ the other voice said, less strained. โYou need to feed.โ
โIโm fineโโ
โBullshit. You were barely able to get on your horse and stay on it. Youโve lost too much blood,โ the other argued. โSheโs going to wake eventually, and you know what will happen. You wonโt be able to take care of her. Would you like Naill or Emil to service you, or would you prefer that they serviceโ?โ
โNaill,โ he barked out. โGet Naill, dammit.โ
There was a rough chuckle, and I slipped away, only to hear sometime later, โRest. I will watch over both of you.โ
I was gone again, but this time was different. I slept. I slept deeply, where only fragments of words reached me. But in that place, I becameโฆ aware that I had parts. A body. There was a warm, damp touch to my brow, my cheek. It was soft. A cloth. It swept over my lips and under them, along the side of my throat and between my breasts. It disappeared, and then there was sound. A trickling of water, and then the cloth returned, gliding over my bare arms and between my fingers. The touch felt nice. It lulled me, letting me slip back into the heavy sleep and fall once more.
I was that child again, grasping at my motherโs bloodied arm.ย They had gotten inside, just like the man had warned. The screams. There were so many screams, and the shrieks of those things outside the window, scratching and clawing at it.
โYouโve got to let go, baby. You need to hide, Poppyโโ Momma stilled and then wrenched her arm free.
Momma reached into the kid leather boots I liked to shuffle around in, pretending that I was older and bigger. She pulled something out, something black as night and slender and sharp. She moved so fastโfaster
than Iโd ever seen her move before, spinning around as she rose, the black spike in her hand.
โHow could you do this?โ Momma demanded as I scooted to the edge of the cupboard.
And then I was above the colors, in the nothingness once again, but I wasnโt alone.
A woman was there, her hair long and floating around her, the color so pale it was like spun moonlight. Her features were familiar. Iโd seen her before in my mind while in the Temple. But now I thought she looked a bit like me. There were freckles across the bridge of her nose and on her cheeks. Her eyes were the color of dew-kissed grass, but behind the pupils, there was a light. A silvery-white glow that seeped out, fracturing the vibrant green.
Her lips moved, and she spoke. Her lashes swept down, and a tear fell from the corner of one eyeโa blood-red tear. Her words sent a jolt of icy shock through me. But then she was gone, and so was I.
A pins-and-needles sensation was the first thing I became aware of. It started in my feet and then crawled up my calves to spread over the rest of my body. Heat followed. A fever swept through me, drying my already parched throat. Thirsty. I was soย thirsty. I tried to open my mouth, but my lips felt sealed together.
My toes curled, and I didnโt like the feeling at first. It caused the rest of my flesh to become aware of the blanket lying on me and the mattress under me. My skin felt too sensitive, the material too scratchy.
I was so thirsty.
My fingers twitched against my bare stomach. The skin felt jagged, uneven. I concentrated on my mouth, willing my lips to part. If I could open them, I could ask forโฆfor water. No. I didnโt want water. I wanted something else.
I wasnโt thirsty. I wasโฆhungry.ย Starving. I forced my lips to part, and a shallow breath worked its way in. There were scents. Fresh pine. Something wild. My skin started to tingle and grow tight, becoming even
more sensitized. My ears vibrated with sound. A whisper of a breeze. A fan churning lazily. The sound was pleasant, but I was hollow, an empty void.
I was so hungry.
I was so hungry, Iย ached.ย The inside of my mouth throbbed, and everything inside me felt as if it were drying out, becoming shriveled and brittle. My muscles cramped as I struggled to open my eyes. They felt sewn shut, but I was hungry, and I needed to open my eyes. What felt like a lifetime passed before I managed to pry my lashes apart.
Everything was a hazy, fuzzy array of shadows and splotches of light. I blinked several times, half-afraid my eyes wouldnโt open again, but they did. My vision cleared. Soft light from a gas lamp flowed across gray walls and an old, worn chairโ
A chair that wasnโt empty.
A male was slumped in it, his skin a beige-brown, his dark hair cropped close to the skull. He rubbed at his eyes, and a strange feeling took root in my chest, a sensation I tried to grasp. But whatever it was kept slipping through my fingers. I was too starved to concentrate. I neededโฆ
The male sighed and my muscles tensed. My legs curled up, and the ache in the pit of my stomach and my chest grew and grew. Throat constricting, my heart started to thud heavily against my ribs as the hunger seized me. I wasnโt aware of moving, of sitting up, until hair fell over my shoulders, causing my skin to pinch. The man lowered his hand.
Shock splashed across his features and against my heated skin like an icy rain shower. My legs tucked under me, tensing.
He leaned forward, gripping the arms of the chair until the tendons popped, and his veinsโฆ โI can still feel yourย notam.โ
His words didnโt matter. Hunger pierced my chest as my chin dipped, and my lips peeled back. My entire being focused on his throat, on where I swore I saw his pulse pounding.
โShit,โ he whispered, rising.
I shot off the bed and launched myself at him. Stumbling back, he caught my wrists. The back of his knees hit the chair. Off-balance, he fell into the seat, and I went with him, straining forward as I scrambled into the chair. โGods. Youโre fast. And youโre really strong,โ he grunted, his arms trembling as he held me back. Strands of coppery-red hair fell across my face as I lifted my head.
He gasped, his blue eyes widening. โHoly shit.โ
I threw myself onto him. The chair groaned under our combined weight. One of his arms caved, and I went for his throat, my mouth stretching wide, stomach clenchingโ
An arm folded around my waist, catching me. Another banded across my breasts, hauling me back against hard, warm skin. A static charge passed during the contact, startling me. That feelingโฆthat smell of spice and pine. A keening, whimpering sound tore its way from my throat as I stretched out, trying to grasp the male as he jumped from the chair, his black tunic wrinkled and stained withโฆwith something. Blood? My blood. I stared at him, sensing that he was not mortal. He was somethingย else. Something that belonged to me.
โYou donโt want him,โ a voice danced over my ear. โHe wonโt be as tasty. You want me.โ
โIn any other situation,โ the male with wintry blue eyes said, โI might be offended.โ
Hunger lashed at my insides. Desperation blistered my skin. I was starving, and it hurt. Everythingย ached. My skin, my bones, my muscles. My hair. A low, humming sound came from deep within me, finally forming rough, guttural words. โItย hurts.โ
โI know. Youโre hungry. But you canโt eat Kieran. That would make me a little sad.โ
I didnโt care if it made him sad. I threw my head back, connecting with his jaw. He grunted, but his hold on me didnโt loosen. It only tightened.
โCareful,โ the one called Kieran said. โSheโs stronger.โ
โI got her,โ he bit out, holding me tight to his front. โYou should probably put some distance between you and her.โ
The other didnโt move as the one who held me shifted an arm, lifting his wrist over my shoulder. A scent hit the air. My heart sped up as I stilled, breathing deeply. It smelledย wonderful, lush and decadent. The gnawing ache intensified.
โHer eyes,โ the other said as the one holding me lowered his armโhis wrist. Hisย bleedingย wrist. โTheyโre not black. Theyโre still green.โ
The male stiffened against me. โWhat?โ
Forgetting about the one in front of me, I grabbed the arm and struck, closing my mouth over the two open wounds and drawing in deeply. The male jerked and gasped. โGods.โ
The first taste of his blood was a shock to my senses, tart and sweet. His blood coursed down my throat, warm and thick. It hit the hollowness in my chest, the empty pit in my stomach, easing the ache. I moaned, shuddering as the cramping in my muscles began to fade. The red-tinted shadows in my mind started to thin, and fragments of thought began to break through the hunger. Pieces ofโ
A hand curled under my jaw, lifting my mouth from his wrist. โNo!โ I panicked. The painful hunger surged back to life. I neededโI neededย more.
โLook at me.โ
I fought against his grip, bucking against his hold, but he wasย strong.
The male turned my head. โStop.โ His breath danced over my lips, and something about his words was different, softer, deeper. It echoed through me. โStop fighting me and open your eyes, Penellaphe.โ
His voice pierced through the hunger as it had before when I was drifting in the darkness. My breathing slowed as my body obeyed his command. Amber eyes stared into mine, bright and churning with golden flecks. I couldnโt look awayโcouldnโt move even as a barb-edged surge of anguish flooded me.
โPoppy,โ he whispered, those strange, churning eyes glimmering with dampness. โYou didnโt Ascend.โ
I knew his words should make sense. A distant, fragmented part of me knew that I should understand. But I couldnโt think past the hungerโ couldnโt focus on anything but that.
โI donโt understand,โ the other male said. โEven with the blood of the gods in her, she was still mortal.โ
The one who held me shifted his hand from my chin and touched my lips. The urge to snap down on his finger rode me hard, but I couldnโt fight him. The hold he had on me wouldnโt allow it as he gently pushed back my upper lip.
โShe doesnโt have fangs,โ he said, his gaze quickly returning to mine. I feltโฆI felt the tartness of his confusion give way to the earthy, woodsy sensation of relief. โI know what this is. Itโs bloodlust. Sheโs experiencing bloodlust, but she didnโt Ascend. Thatโs why you still feel the Primalย notam.โ He slipped his thumb away and shuddered. โFeed,โ he whispered, letting go.
Bindings I couldnโt see or feel left me. I could move. He lifted his wrist once more, and I latched on to him. My mouth sealed over his wound
again. The blood wasnโt flowing as freely as before, but I drank deeply anyway, drawing him into me.
โCareful,โ the otherโฆthe wolven warned. โYouโve given a lot of blood and havenโt nearly taken enough.โ
โIโm fine. You should leave.โ
โNot going to happen,โ the wolven growled. โShe may hurt you.โ
The one who fed me let out a rough chuckle. โShouldnโt you be more concerned about her well-being now?โ
โIโm concerned about both of you.โ
The male sighed. โThis could getโฆintense.โ There was a beat of silence. โIt already is.โ
Something about what the wolven said and the raggedness in the way the one I fed from spoke should have concerned me. And it did a little. I wasnโt sure why, but I was lost again in the one who held me, in his taste and his essence. I barely felt him move, sitting down and gathering me close in his lap, cuddling me against his chest as he kept his wrist against my mouth. All that mattered was his blood. It was an awakening. Aย giftย sparking through my veins, filling that empty hollowness once more and reaching into the darkness of my mind. The thick film of blackness there cracked, and tiny pieces ofย meย trickled in.
His fingers grazed my cheek, catching the strands of my hair and tucking them back over my shoulder. I tensed, but when he didnโt pull me away, I relaxed. He touched me again, gliding his fingers through my hair in soothing, comforting caresses. I liked that. Touch wasโฆit was special to me. It had once been forbidden, but heโฆheย had shattered that rule from the beginning.
โPoppy,โ he whispered.ย Poppy. That was me. โIโm sorry,โ he said, his voice ragged. โIโm sorry that you woke in this state and I wasnโt here. I think IโฆI mustโve passed out. Iโm so damn sorry. I know what bloodlust feels like. I know that you can lose yourself in it. But youโll find yourself again. I donโt doubt that for one second. Youโre so strong.โ His fingers continued moving along my scalp, and my grip on his arm loosened as he spoke. The taste of his blood was everything, and with each swallow, the void in me lessened, and the shadows in my mind cracked even more.
โGods, I hope you truly understand how strong you are. Iโm constantly in awe of you. Iโve been in awe of you since the night in the Red Pearl.โ
The ragged breaths evened out. The racing of my heart and pulse started to slow, and behind my eyes, I saw colorsโa blue, cloudless sky and warm sunlight. Black waters that shimmered like pools of obsidian, and sandy dirt warm under my feet. Palms joined, and him whispering: โUnworthy.โ These images, these thoughts were his as he spoke softly.
โYouโre brave, so damn brave. I realized that at the Red Pearl. To be the Maiden, to be raised as you were, and to still want to experience life told me that you were brave. That night on the Rise, when you went up there in thatโฆthat damn nightgown?โ His chuckle was rough. โYou didnโt hide. Not then, and not when you went out to ease the pain of those cursed by the Craven. Youโve chosen things for yourself longer than you realize, Poppyโlonger than you give yourself credit for. You always did when it mattered the most, and did so knowing the consequences. Because youโre brave. You were never the Maiden. You were never truly helpless. You were smart, strong, and brave.โ
He exhaled heavily. โI donโt think Iโve told you this. I didnโt get the chance yet. When you asked me to kiss you under the willow? Deep down, I knew then that I would give you anything you asked for. I still will. Whatever you want,โ he promised roughly, his fingers tangling in my hair. โYou can have it. Anything. Everything. You can have it all. I will make sure of it.โ
Warmth buzzed through me, erasing the prickly sensation in my skin. I swallowed the rich essence of him and then I took what felt like my first real breath. It didnโt burn or open that empty feeling again. It did something entirely different.ย Theย bloodโฆ
Hisย bloodโฆ
It was like liquid fire, stroking to life a different kind of need, one I fell headfirst into. I tilted forward, pressing my breasts against his bare chest. The contact left me hungry in a way much different from earlier but just as potent. I shifted in his lap. We both groaned. Instinct took over, my body knowing what I wantedโwhat Iย neededโas I drank from his wrist. I rolled my hips against his, shaking at the intense curling sensation deep in my lower stomach.
His bloodโฆgods. My skin tingled now, becoming overly sensitive. The tips of my breasts ached as they brushed against the fine dusting of hair across his chest. I whimpered, pressing down against the hardness straining through thin pants. I wantedโฆno, I neededย him.
โWhatever you want,โ he said, his words a vow. โI will give it to you.โ Him. I wanted him.
Keeping his wrist to my mouth, I planted my hand on his chest and pushedโpushed hard. He fell onto his back as I tilted my hips, rubbing against his length. With shocking strength, he lifted both of us just enough to shove his pants down to his thighs with one hand. The feel of him hot and hard against my lower body dragged a thready moan from me.
โFuck,โ he gasped, his large body shaking. And then he moved again, lifting me in one fluid motion and angling my hips. He brought me down onto him, sliding deep inside me. His wrist smothered my cry of surprise as his hips flexed and thrust upward. Toes curling, I pushed down, matching his pace as I curled myself around his arm, drinking deeply.
โSheโs taking too much,โ the other man said, his voice closer. โYouโve got to stop her.โ
Even in my lust-addled mind, even as tension coiled tighter and tighter inside me, I knew the one who moved under me and in me wouldnโt stop me. Heโd let me take it all. Heโd let me drain him dry. Heโd do that because he…
โFor fuckโs sake,โ the wolven snarled. A heartbeat later, I felt his arm clamp down on my waist as his fingers pressed into the skin under my jaw. He pulled my head back, but I didnโt fight him because this maleโs blood was everything to me.
The one under me sat up, curling an arm around my hips, just below the otherโs arm. A sharp swirl of tingles rushed through me. He reached around the wolvenโs grip, fisting my hair as he pressed his forehead to mine. Under me, he moved his magnificent body at a furious rhythm. My entire body stiffened and then lightning flew through my veins. My muscles clamped down on him, spasming. My cry mixed with his rough shout as his hips pumped furiously, and he followed me into the wild, mindless bliss that wracked my entire body. Slowly, the tension poured out of me, turning my muscles to liquid. I didnโt know how much time passed, but finally, the hand under my jaw eased, and one of the arms slid away from me. My cheek fell to a warm shoulder, and I sat there, eyes closed and breathing shallowly as he held me tightly to his chest, his hand still tangled in my hair at the back of my head. He nodded, and the wolven left. The click of a nearby door signaled his departure, but I remained, sated and relaxed. The heat of the blood coursing through me cooled. His bloodโฆ
Hawkeโs blood.
Casteelโsย blood.
The nothingness in my mind shattered in an instant. Thoughts flooded me, connecting with memories. They reached into the deepest parts of me, linking with a sense of self. Shock found me firstโutter disbelief and anguish over what Alastir had done while we stood at the Chambers of Nyktos and everything that had happened after that.
Iโd trusted him.
IโฆIโd wanted acceptance from the people at the Temple, but theyโd called me a Soul Eater. Theyโd called me aย whore. Theyโฆtheyโd called me the Maiden, and I was none of those things. Anger crowded out the horror. A rage that carved itself into every bone in my body. Fury hummed at my very core, striking against the wildness growing inside me. They would pay for what they had done to me. Every single one of them would discover exactly what I was. I would never be struck down like that again. They wouldnโt succeedโฆ
But hadnโt they already?
I could still feel the bolt striking my flesh, tearing through vital parts of me. Iโd tasted death.ย Feltย itโthe breath I couldnโt take, the heart that no longer beat, and the words I couldnโt speak. Iโd been dying, but there had been a different pain, too, a fiery one that had ripped through me.ย Drink. Keep drinking. Thatโs it. Keep swallowing. Drink, Poppy, keep drinking for meโฆ The taste of citrus and snow still coated the back of my throat, my lips. Still warmed and filled that gnawing, painful hollowness inside me. I shuddered, and the hand on the back of my head stilled. Oh, gods, they succeeded. HeโdโฆAscended me.
What had he been thinking?ย I will not lose you. Ever. I love you, Princess.ย He hadnโt been thinking. Heโd simply beenโฆfeeling.
Suddenly, it was like a chest in my mind unlocked, and the lid was thrown off. Emotions poured into meโnearly nineteen years-worth of them that went beyond what had happened in the Temple, the memories and beliefs, experiences and feelings. Nightmares came, too, heavy with desperation and hopelessness. But so did dreams full of such wonder and possibility. Dreams bursting with need and want andย love.
I sat back so quickly I lost my balance. An arm dropped to my waist, stopping me before I toppled out of his lap. Through the messy strands of my hair, I saw him, really sawย him.
Dark, disheveled hair tumbled across his forehead. Tension bracketed the corners of his mouth, and shadows smudged the skin under his eyes, but they were a bright topaz as they held mine. Neither of us moved or spoke as we stared at one another. I had no idea what he was thinking, and I barely knewย myย thoughts in that moment. So much had happened, so many things I didnโt understand. Namely, how I was in here after I had Ascended. After heโd done the unthinkable to save me. I remembered the panic in his fatherโs voice as he pleaded with him not to do itโnot to repeat history. But heโd riskedโgods, heโd risked everything. And I was alive because of him. I was here because of him. But none of this made sense.
The Ascended were uncontrollable after being turned, dangerous for mortals, let alone an elemental Atlantian. It could take them years to control their thirst, but more unbelievable was that I could still feel all those heady and exhilarating and terrifying emotions within me. I could feelย love, and I didnโt think any Ascended was capable of feeling such a miracle. I didnโt understand. Maybe this was some sort of dream? Perhaps I had passed and was in the Vale, an eternity of paradise awaiting me. I wasnโt sure if I wanted to know if that was the case.
I lifted my trembling hand and pressed my fingers to the warm skin of his cheek. โCasteel.โ
