Chapter no 48

The Crown of Gilded Bones (Blood and Ash Series #3)

I stalked through the palace halls in Evaemon, the dust from the road and blood still staining my breeches and tunic. I headed for the sun- drenched atrium in the center, followed by Kieran and his sister still in their wolven forms. Naill and Hisa followed, their hands on their swords. Delano was with Tawny, having taken her to one of the rooms above mine. Healers and Elders were being summoned.

Crown Guards bowed stiffly as we passed, the heels of my boots clicking off the tile floor as sharply as the wolvenโ€™s claws.

Vonetta was one giant ball of stress. I didnโ€™t know if she was more worried that I would obliterate Casteelโ€™s mother or if it was the plans weโ€™d discussed on the way back to Evaemon. I, on the other hand, was strangely calm. I wasnโ€™t worried about what I was about to say to Eloana or what I would carry out next. I felt only determination and anger, so much anger, it seeped out of my bones and coated my skin, but I was calm. I didnโ€™t know one could feel such wrath and yet feel suchย silence.

The doors to the family room were open, and the scent of coffee and freshly baked bread stretched out to me, turning my stomach instead of inciting my hunger.

Eloana wasnโ€™t alone.

She sat across from Lord Sven and Lord Gregori. Several Crown Guards stood in the back of the room, but my focus was on her.

His mother looked at me, and then her gaze flicked behind me, searching for what she would not find. And she knew. The moment she didnโ€™t see Casteel, her agony was sharp and pungent. A hand fluttered against her breast as she reached for the empty space beside her, seeming to realize then that her husband wasnโ€™t there.

The two Elders stood hastily. โ€œYour Majesty,โ€ Sven said, bowing. Concern rippled from him as he glanced at the wolven siblings. โ€œAre you okay, Your Majesty?โ€

No. I wasnโ€™t. I wouldnโ€™t be okay until Casteel was by my side, and the Blood Crown was nothing but a pile of ashes. But my sorrow and fear gave way to anger as I stared at Casteelโ€™s mother. I latched on to it, letting it wrap around the hum in my chest, filling the hollowness of where my heart beat.

And that anger tasted of power and death, a lot like it had when I walked toward Oak Ambler, but I was in control this time.

Barely.

โ€œYou knew.โ€ I stared at his mother. โ€œYou knew what she was and what sheย wasnโ€™t.โ€

Blood drained rapidly from Eloanaโ€™s face as she jerked back. โ€œPenellapheโ€”โ€

โ€œWhere is the King?โ€ Gregori demanded, stepping forward.

The wolven let out a low rumble of warning as my head snapped toward him. Words fell from my lips like poison-dipped daggers. โ€œWhere is the King,ย Your Majesty?โ€ I corrected softly in a tone eerily similar to the one Casteel had used when he was but a second away from relieving someone of their heart.

Gregori stiffened. โ€œWhere is the King,ย Your Majesty,โ€ he repeated, his irritation acid on my tongue and his dislike of me hot against my skin.

My head tilted to the side as everything came to a head. Something happened then, tearing open from deep within. It had rattled with all the lies and then had shaken loose when Casteel had saved my life. It had cracked open when I stood before Nyktos and told him that he would not hurt my friends. The locks that held it back had been blown to pieces when I saw Ian fall and then awoke to find that Casteel had been taken. It was a whole new awakening.

I wasnโ€™t the Maiden.

I wasnโ€™t a Princess or even a Queen. I was a god.

And I was so overย this.

โ€œYou donโ€™t like me, do you?โ€ I queried softly.

An icy splash of shock rolled through him, but he quickly masked it.

His chin lifted. โ€œI think you know the answer to that.โ€

โ€œI do. And you know what?โ€ I asked, my skin humming as the air charged around me. A silvery-white glow seeped from my skin, crowding the sides of my vision as Sven inched away from Gregori. โ€œIn the entirety of the two kingdoms, I couldnโ€™t give a fuck if you or any other member of

the Council likes me. It does not change that I am your Queen, and your tone and the manner in which you address me is highly inappropriate.โ€ I watched pink seep into the manโ€™s cheeks, and I smiled tightly. โ€œNot just because Iโ€™m your Queen, but because I am the grandchild of Nyktos, and you speak to aย godย with such disrespect.โ€

Eloana sucked in a sharp breath as I let the restless vibration from within the center of my chest come to the surface. Silvery-white light spilled across the room, reflecting off the walls and turning the glass to shimmering diamonds. Sven tripped over the corner of the striped carpet, catching himself on the edge of a chair. The furniture and windows rattled as I took a step forward. Silver dripped from my fingertips, forming webs of iridescent light that fell to the floor, disappearing into the stone, and that beautiful light could give life. It could also take it.

Hisa was the first to move, dropping to a knee, one hand pressed over her heart, the other flattened to the floor. The other guards followed, as did Sven. Gregori remained standing, his eyes wide.

โ€œTry me,โ€ I whispered, and those two words echoed throughout the room.

A tremor coursed through Gregori as he slowly lowered himself to one knee, bowing his head. โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ he uttered, placing a hand to his chest and the other to the floor. โ€œPlease forgive me.โ€

In the hidden, darkest corners of my being, the urge to lash out was a tempting force. To unleash all the sorrow and anger I felt, and let it flay open Gregoriโ€™s skin and rip out each bone. I couldโ€”with just a thought, a single will. He would be no more, and he would be the last to speak to me in such a way.

Isbeth would do it. But I wasnโ€™t her.

I reined in the eather, and pulled the power deep within me. The radiance retreated, seeping back into my skin. โ€œLeave,โ€ I ordered the Elder. โ€œNow.โ€

He rose, stumbling around me and the wolven. I heard Naillโ€™s soft snicker as the Elder rushed past him. My gaze flicked to Sven. โ€œYou should leave, too,โ€ I said. โ€œAnd the guards. Leave.โ€

Sven nodded, exiting the room with far more grace than his predecessor. A few of the Crown Guards lingered, obviously still loyal to

Eloanaโ€”or afraid for her. I turned to where I saw that she had lowered herself to the floor.

I fought a cruel smile, stopping it from reaching my lips as she looked up at me. โ€œI do not believe you want many to hear what I have to say.โ€

The skin around the corners of her eyes puckered as she closed them. โ€œListen to your Queen,โ€ she whispered hoarsely. โ€œLeave.โ€

Vonetta and Kieran tracked the guardsโ€™ progress. It wasnโ€™t until Naill and Hisa had closed the door that I said, โ€œYou may rise.โ€

Eloana rose, collapsing onto the settee, her glistening amber eyes fixed on me as I strode forward, gripping the back of a chair. The legs scraped against the floor as I dragged it so it was before her.

Slowly, I lowered myself to the chair, my eyes meeting hers as Kieran and Vonetta moved so they crouched on either side of me. Naill and Hisa remained at the door. โ€œAsk me whose blood stains my clothing.โ€

Eloanaโ€™s lips trembled. โ€œWhose bloodโ€”?โ€ Her voice cracked as she glanced at the wolven. โ€œWhose blood stains your clothing?โ€

โ€œMy brotherโ€™s.โ€ I flattened my palms against my knees. โ€œHe was slaughtered when I refused to join the Blood Crown, uniting the kingdoms under the sovereignty of Solis. He didnโ€™t even see it coming. They cut his head from his shoulders, and he did nothing to deserve that. Nothing.ย Sheย did it because she could.โ€ My fingers curled into my knees, where the material was stiff with dried blood. โ€œNow ask me where your son is.โ€

Her eyes started to closeโ€”

โ€œNo.โ€ I tipped forward. โ€œDonโ€™t you dare close your eyes. I didnโ€™t when I watched a sword slice through my brotherโ€™s throat. Donโ€™t you dare close your eyes. Youโ€™re stronger than that.โ€

Her chest rose with a heavy breath as her eyes remained open. โ€œWhere is my son?โ€

โ€œShe took him,โ€ I forced out, the words cutting into my skin. โ€œAnd you know why? You know exactly why she wantedย yourย sons. Itโ€™s not just to make more Ascended. Itโ€™s personal.โ€

Her lips moved, but no sound came out.

โ€œYou knew. This whole time. You knew who Queen Ileana really was.โ€ Rage heated my blood, sparked off my skin. She leaned back an inch. โ€œYou knew she was Isbeth and that she was never a vampry.โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMalec gave her his blood when you poisoned her.โ€ I reclaimed what distance sheโ€™d gathered. โ€œHe couldnโ€™t make a vampry with his blood. Isbeth was never the first Ascended.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t know that at first,โ€ Eloana spoke. โ€œI swear to you. I had no idea that she wasnโ€™t a vampry. She had black eyes just like the others that were made after herโ€”โ€

โ€œBecause her eyes are black but not like the Ascended,โ€ I interrupted. โ€œTheyโ€™ve always been black.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t know,โ€ she repeated, one of her hands curling into a fist. โ€œI didnโ€™t know until I found Malec and entombed him. That is when I learned that Isbeth had never been a vampry, that she had Ascended into something elseโ€”โ€

โ€œSomething like him,โ€ I cut her off, not even truly caring if she spoke the truth at this point. โ€œWhen you learned the truth doesnโ€™t matter. What does is that you knew Ileana was Isbeth, and you didnโ€™t tell us. You didnโ€™t prepare us for the fact that we werenโ€™t dealing with a vampry but with something far more powerful than that. That is why your son is not with me.โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆโ€ She shook her head, her features beginning to crumble. โ€œIs my son alive?โ€

โ€œWhich one?โ€

Her eyes widened. โ€œW-what do you mean?โ€

โ€œAre you asking about Malik or Casteel?โ€ I said. โ€œMalik is alive. Heโ€™s actually doing just fine, all cozied up with Isbeth.โ€

She didnโ€™t move. I didnโ€™t think she even breathed. I couldโ€™ve broken the news to her in a far kinder way, but she couldโ€™ve also told us the whole truth.

โ€œNo,โ€ she whispered.

โ€œYes.โ€ I nodded as Isbethโ€™s voice haunted my thoughts. โ€œIt was him who retrieved Casteel.โ€

A tear fell from her eye, streaking across her cheek. โ€œIs Casteel alive?โ€ I lifted my left hand, showing her the glimmering marriage imprint.

โ€œHe is.โ€ I swallowed hard. โ€œBut Iโ€™m sure you understand that means very little at this point.โ€

She shuddered, and I didnโ€™t know if it was from relief or fear. A long moment passed. โ€œOh, gods,โ€ she whispered on a ragged breath, closing her hands over her face. Her shoulders shook.

Forcing myself to sit back, I waited until sheโ€™d pulled herself togetherโ€ฆand she did, just like I knew she would. It took a couple of minutes, but her shoulders stilled, and her hands lowered. Puffy, glassy eyes stared out from behind tear-soaked lashes. โ€œItโ€™s my fault.โ€

โ€œNo shit,โ€ I snapped. At least, partially, it was. Because Iโ€ฆI had lost control. Iโ€™d given Isbeth the opening she needed.

She flinched. โ€œIโ€ฆI didnโ€™t want people to know sheโ€™d won.โ€ I stilled. Everything in me stilled. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œIt wasโ€ฆit was my ego. Thereโ€™s no other way for me to say it. I loved Malec once upon a time. I thought the moon and sun set and rose with him. And she wasnโ€™t like the other women. She sank her claws into him, and I knewโ€ฆIย knewย he loved herโ€”loved her more than he loved me. I didnโ€™t want people to know that in the end, even with Malec entombed, she didnโ€™t just win, she became a Queen,โ€ she admitted hoarsely. โ€œBecame the Crown that forced us to remain behind the Skotos Mountains, used our people to make monsters, and tookโ€”took my children. I didnโ€™t want Casteel to know that the same woman whoโ€™d taken my first husband was whoโ€™d held him and then his brother. She won in the end, andโ€ฆsheโ€™s still managing to tear my family and kingdom apart.โ€

Now I was the one struck speechless.

โ€œI was embarrassed,โ€ she continued. โ€œAnd I didnโ€™tโ€ฆI know itโ€™s no excuse. It just became something that was never spoken. A lie that became a reality after hundreds of years. Only Valyn and Alastir knew the truth.โ€

Alastir. Of course.

โ€œAnd their son?โ€ I said. โ€œWhat did you do with Isbeth and Malecโ€™s son? Did you have him killed? Was it Alastir who carried it out?โ€

Pressing her lips together, she looked up at the ceiling. โ€œAlastir did. He knew of the child before I even did. Valyn doesnโ€™t know about the child at all.โ€

I stared at her. โ€œIs that why you didnโ€™t want to go to war? Because doing so would mean that Ileanaโ€™s real identity would be revealed, along with everything else?โ€

โ€œPartly,โ€ she admitted as she wiped the heels of her hands under her eyes. โ€œBut also because I didnโ€™t want to see more Atlantians and mortals die.โ€ She lowered trembling hands. โ€œMalik isโ€ฆis well andโ€”โ€ She cleared her throat. โ€œHeโ€™s with her?โ€

โ€œHe appeared well, and he supports the Blood Crown. That is all I know,โ€ I told her, sinking farther into the chair. I didnโ€™t know how much of what she said was the truth now, but I did know that the agony I felt from her hadnโ€™t just been sorrow. I recognized that the agony was partly shame now, something sheโ€™d carried for hundreds of years and would continue to shoulder. To be honest, I didnโ€™t know what I wouldโ€™ve done if I had been in her place. The war between her and Isbeth had started long before the first vampry had been created, and itโ€™d never ended. โ€œMalec wasnโ€™t a deity.โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆI can see that.โ€ She sniffed. โ€œI mean, I saw that when you showed Gregori what you were. But I donโ€™t understand. Malec โ€”โ€

โ€œHe lied to you,โ€ I said, spreading my hands along the arms of the chair. โ€œI donโ€™t know why, but he is one of Nyktosโ€™s sons. Heโ€™s a god.โ€

Her surprise couldnโ€™t be fabricated, and it cooled some of my anger. โ€œI didnโ€™t knowโ€”โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ I curled my fingers around the edges of the arms. โ€œMalec confided in Isbeth. She knew.โ€

Eloana flinched as she let out a low whistle. โ€œThat stings more than it should.โ€

โ€œMaybe you never stopped loving Malec.โ€

โ€œMaybe,โ€ she whispered, staring at her lap now. โ€œI love Valyn. I love him dearly and fiercely. I also loved Malec, even though I donโ€™t think Iโ€ฆ knew anything about him. But I think Malec will always own a part of my heart.โ€

And the part owned by Malec would always belong to him, and that wasโ€ฆthat was just sad.

โ€œIsbeth is my mother,โ€ I told her, and her eyes shot to mine. โ€œIโ€™m the daughter of her and Malec. And I married your son.โ€

She paled once more.

โ€œIt was a part of her plan,โ€ I continued as Vonetta leaned into my leg. โ€œThat I would marry Malik and take Atlantia. With my bloodline and a Prince at my side, there would be absolutely nothing that could be done. But in a twist of fate, I married Casteel instead.โ€

โ€œHer plan worked, then,โ€ she rasped.

โ€œNo, it hasnโ€™t,โ€ I replied. โ€œI will not take Atlantia in her name.โ€

โ€œShe has Malik and Casteel,โ€ she countered, her tone hardening. โ€œHow has she not won?โ€

โ€œShe wonโ€™t kill them. Malik is helping her, and she can use Casteel against me like she used your sons against Atlantia,โ€ I told her.

Her lips thinned. โ€œI still donโ€™t see how she hasnโ€™t won.โ€

โ€œBecause Iโ€™m not you.โ€ I noted the faint wince, and I didnโ€™t even want to feel bad for inflicting it. โ€œI have been used my entire life in one way or another, and I will not be used again. I know what I am now. I know what it means to have had the power in me this whole time. My brotherโ€™s death wasnโ€™t in vain. Neither was Lyraโ€™s. I understand now.โ€

Eloanaโ€™s brows puckered. โ€œWhat are you saying?โ€

โ€œI can summon Nyktosโ€™s guards, and I will. Isbeth may have her Revenants, her knights, soldiers, and those who support her.โ€ My grip tightened. โ€œBut I will have the draken.โ€

Visibly shaken, it took Eloana a few moments to respond. โ€œCan you evenโ€”? Iโ€™m sorry. You can. You are a god.โ€ She smoothed a hand over her gown, a nervous habit, I realized. โ€œBut are you sure? The draken are a fierce bloodline. There is a reason they went to sleep with Nyktos. Only he can control them.โ€

โ€œI am his grandchild,โ€ I reasoned, but I really had no idea how the draken would respond. I could only assume that what Nyktos had said also meant that theyโ€™d do so favorably. โ€œAnd I donโ€™t seek to control them. I just need their help.โ€

Understanding flickered through her. โ€œI thought you and Casteel wanted to prevent war. You wonโ€™t once the draken are awakened.โ€

โ€œBy holding Casteel, she thinks she can stay my hand. But, sometimes, war cannot be prevented,โ€ I said, echoing her wordsโ€”ones I knew the Consort had whispered to me before when I first entered Saionโ€™s Cove.

And that was something Iโ€™d realized on the journey back to Atlantia. There would be no more talks or ultimatums. What was to come couldnโ€™t be stopped. It never could be. And in a way, the War of Two Kings had never ended. There had just been a strained truce, like Isbeth had said. All the years Casteel sought to move pieces behind the scenes, to free his brother and gain land for Atlantia hadnโ€™t been wasted. It had given Atlantia time to gain what they didnโ€™t have before.

โ€œNo,โ€ Eloana agreed quietly, sadly. โ€œSometimes, it cannot.โ€

I glanced to where Hisa stood beside Naill. โ€œCan you please send word to the Blood Crown that I will meet with them in the woods outside of Oak Ambler by the end of next week?โ€ I told her. โ€œMake sure they understand

that whoever they send had better be fit to receive a Queen. That I will only speak to her or to the King.โ€

The corners of the commanderโ€™s lips curved up as she bowed at the waist. โ€œYes, Your Majesty.โ€

โ€œA message?โ€ Eloana asked. โ€œWhat are you planning?โ€

โ€œFirst, I brought my friend back from Solis. The one I believed to have Ascended. She hasnโ€™t, but she was wounded with what I believe was shadowstone, and my abilities arenโ€™t working on her.โ€ I dragged my palms over my knees. โ€œDelano took Tawny to one of the rooms and summoned a Healer. I would ask that you look after her. She isโ€ฆโ€ I inhaled deeply. โ€œShe was my first friend.โ€

Eloana nodded. โ€œOf course. I will do all that I can to help her.โ€

โ€œThank you.โ€ I cleared my throat. โ€œIโ€™m going to take a bath.โ€ A shower wasโ€ฆ I couldnโ€™t do that and not think of Casteel, and the only way I was surviving currently was byย notย thinking of him. โ€œIโ€™m going to Iliseeum. Once I return, I will send the Blood Queen the kind of message only Casteel would be proud of.โ€

โ€œKnowing what my son would be proud of,โ€ she said, voice thickening, โ€œI can only imagine what kind of message that will be.โ€

I felt my lips curve up in a tight, savage smile. โ€œAnd then Iโ€™m going to finish what you started centuries ago. I will return these lands to Atlantia, and I will return with my King at my side.โ€

Golden eyes locked with mine. โ€œAnd if you fail?โ€ โ€œI wonโ€™t.โ€
