Chapter no 13

The Crown (The Selection, 5)

โ€œWAIT, WHICH WAY DO THESE guys move again?โ€ Hale asked before reaching over and picking up two petits fours and setting them on his plate.

โ€œBishops move diagonally. I wouldnโ€™t do that if I was you, but itโ€™s your funeral.โ€

He laughed. โ€œOkay. What about the little castle ones?โ€ โ€œStraight lines, either side to side or back and forth.โ€

He moved his rook, taking another one of my pawns. โ€œHonestly, I never would have pegged you for a chess girl.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not really. Ahren used to be obsessed, and he forced me to play with him every single day for months. But then he got serious about Camille, and all his chess time turned into letter-writing time.โ€

I moved my bishop and took his knight.

โ€œUgh, I didnโ€™t even see that,โ€ he lamented between bites. โ€œIโ€™ve been wanting to ask you about Ahren, but I wasnโ€™t sure if you were up for it.โ€

I shrugged, prepared to dismiss the invitation, but instead I reminded myself that if I was going to have a shot at happiness at all, I had to let someone past my walls. Sighing, I told the truth.

โ€œI miss him. Itโ€™s like I grew up with a built-in best friend, and now heโ€™s gone. I have other people Iโ€™m close to, like my lady-in-waiting, Neena. I donโ€™t think I realized how much I was relying on her until Ahren was gone and I could see it. But it makes me afraid. What if I get to the point I did with Ahren, where sheโ€™s the person I go to with everything, and then something happens and she leaves?โ€

Hale nodded as he listened, and I could see he was trying to suppress a smile.

โ€œThis isnโ€™t funny!โ€ I complained, chucking one of his lost pawns at him.

He laughed out loud, dodging the throw. โ€œNo, Iโ€™m not smiling because of that. Itโ€™s just . . . the last time we talked like this you ran. Youโ€™re not wearing sneakers under that gown, are you?โ€

โ€œNot at all. They wouldnโ€™t go together,โ€ I teased. โ€œNo, really, I should have trusted you then, and I do trust you now. Sorry if Iโ€™m slow. Opening up to people is not a skill of mine.โ€

โ€œNo rush. Iโ€™m a pretty patient person.โ€

I couldnโ€™t take the eye contact anymore, so I focused on the board,

watching his hands hover above the grid.

โ€œAs for how you feel about Neena,โ€ Hale went on, โ€œeven if she did have to leave, that wouldnโ€™t make her less of a friend any more than it makes Ahren less of your brother. You might have to work harder to keep in touch, but if you love them as much as you say, itโ€™ll be worth it.โ€

โ€œI know thatโ€™s true,โ€ I admitted. โ€œItโ€™s already pretty difficult for me to make friends, seeing as I donโ€™t get out much. So I kind of need to keep the ones I have.โ€

Hale chuckled, and I missed what he did on the board. โ€œWell, I just want to go on record and say that even if you donโ€™t choose me, you have my friendship for life, and Iโ€™ll be on a plane to Angeles in a heartbeat if you ever need me.โ€

I smiled. โ€œSomething every day.โ€ He nodded. โ€œEvery day.โ€

โ€œI really needed to hear that. Thank you.โ€ I sat up taller and began to plan my next move. โ€œWhat about you? Whoโ€™s your best friend?โ€

โ€œActually, I was interrogated over this a few weeks ago, just after Burke left. My best friend is a girl, and they thought I was writing to โ€˜my girlfriend back home.โ€™ Let me tell you, it was humiliating to ask her to get on the phone with a guard and explain that weโ€™d never,ย everย been romantically involved.โ€

I bit my lip, glad he could see the humor in it. โ€œIโ€™m really sorry.โ€ โ€œItโ€™s fine. Carrie got a kick out of it, actually.โ€

โ€œWell, Iโ€™m happy she took it in stride.โ€ I cleared my throat. โ€œBut now I have to ask, have you really never had a crush on her?โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ He almost shuddered. โ€œCarrieโ€™s like a sister to me. The thought of kissing her just feels wrong.โ€

I put my hands up in front of me, startled by how offended he was. โ€œOkay.

I donโ€™t have to worry about Carrie. Got it.โ€

โ€œSorry.โ€ The disgust in his face shifted to a shy smile. โ€œItโ€™s just that Iโ€™ve been asked that a million times. Other friends, our parents . . . itโ€™s like everyone has always wanted us to be together, and I donโ€™t feel anything like that for her.โ€

โ€œI get that. Sometimes it seems like everyone wants me to pick Kile just because we grew up together. Like that alone is enough to guarantee youโ€™ll fall in love.โ€

โ€œWell, the difference there is that you actually have feelings for Kile.

Anyone watching could tell.โ€ He fiddled with a discarded pawn.

I looked at my lap. โ€œI shouldnโ€™t have brought that up. Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s okay. I think the only way to stay sane through all this is to remember that youโ€™re the one leading this, and youโ€™re the one who decides

where we stand. The only thing any of us can do is be ourselves.โ€ โ€œWhere do you think you stand exactly?โ€

He gave me a small smile. โ€œI donโ€™t know. Somewhere in the middle?โ€ I shook my head. โ€œYouโ€™re doing better than that.โ€

โ€œYeah?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

His smile faded a little. โ€œThatโ€™s kind of amazing, but also scary. Thereโ€™s a lot of responsibility that comes with winning this.โ€

I nodded. โ€œTons.โ€

โ€œI guess I never really stopped to think about that. But with you really being in charge these days, itโ€™s a little . . . overwhelming.โ€

I stared at him, feeling certain I had to be misunderstanding something. โ€œYouโ€™re not trying to back out, are you?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ he said, continuing to roll the pawn in his hand. โ€œIโ€™m just coming face-to-face with how big this is. Iโ€™m sure your mom had moments like this, too.โ€

He was uncharacteristically sharp, and this seemed to run deeper than his frustration about Carrie. As I continued, trying to keep my tone even, he avoided my eyes.

โ€œDid I miss something? Youโ€™ve always been so enthusiastic, to the point that Iโ€™ve wondered about your sanity. Whatโ€™s with the sudden cold feet?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t say I was having cold feet,โ€ he countered. โ€œI was simply voicing a concern. Youโ€™re constantly voicing your concerns. How is this any different?โ€

There was plenty of truth to that, but I had clearly hit a nerve. And after how hard Iโ€™d worked to be open with Hale, I didnโ€™t understand why he would clam up on me. While I didnโ€™t think he was the type to test me simply for the sake of it, I wondered if maybe he was trying to gauge my patience.

I clenched and unclenched my hands underneath the table, reminding myself that I trusted Hale.

โ€œPerhaps itโ€™s better if we change the subject,โ€ I suggested. โ€œAgreed.โ€

But the only thing that followed was silence.
