Chapter no 91 – GRAYSON

The Brothers Hawthorne

That night, Grayson went swimmingโ€”not to forget this time, but to stall. It didnโ€™t work. He felt Averyโ€™s presence the moment she stepped onto the patio. He took one more lap, then pulled himself out of the pool.

Avery eyed the drawing on his torso. โ€œIโ€™m not going to ask.โ€ Grayson bared his teeth. โ€œPlease donโ€™t.โ€

โ€œJameson told me about your sisters.โ€ Avery gave him a look, one of those very Avery expressions that was worth a thousand words. In this case, her eyes said,ย Iโ€™m sorry youโ€™re in pain.ย The set of her mouth said,ย You should have called me.ย The delicate line of her jaw said,ย You continue to be one of the most infuriating men on the planet.

Grayson couldnโ€™t argue any of those points, so he rebutted her verbal statement instead. โ€œI didnโ€™t tell Jameson that much.โ€

โ€œYou told him enough,โ€ Avery shot back. โ€œIf I could go back in time to when your father kidnapped me, when Mellie shot himโ€”Iโ€™d call the police.โ€

Regret.ย Grayson recognized the depth of emotion in her tone all too well.

โ€œToby and Oren took care of it,โ€ Avery said. โ€œBut I shouldnโ€™t have let them. Calling the police would have led to a media circus, but we would have survived.โ€

Grayson brought his eyes to hers and didnโ€™t speak until he was certain that she wouldnโ€™t look away again. โ€œWe do that,โ€ he told her quietly. โ€œSurvive.โ€

Avery smiled, a barely there hint of a smile, and Grayson realized

suddenly that for the first time since heโ€™d met Avery Grambs, there was nothing tense or painful about standing this close to her.

Sheโ€™d told him once that they were family. Maybe a part of him had been running from that, too.

โ€œWhat do your sisters think happened to their father?โ€ Avery always had a way of cutting straight to the questions that mattered most.

โ€œI donโ€™t know for sure what they believe,โ€ Grayson told her. โ€œPopular consensus is that he skipped town. I think they think that heโ€™s capable of that now. They know heโ€™s under FBI investigation.โ€

โ€œSo maybe he did skip town,โ€ Avery told Grayson. โ€œBut maybe he hired someone to go after me on his way. You donโ€™t have to tell your sisters everything, but you could tell them he was behind the bombing, tell them that you were protecting them from the truth and protecting me from having to relive the worst time of my life.โ€

This is Avery, protecting me.ย โ€œAs a general rule,โ€ Grayson told her, โ€œvoluntarily opening a can of worms rarely goes well.โ€

โ€œAs a general rule, Gray, when people get close to you, you bolt.โ€

No one except his brothers was allowed to talk to him like that. No one except her.

โ€œToby called me,โ€ Avery continued after a moment. โ€œHe was under the impression that Eve called you.โ€

What seemed on the surface like a subject change probably wasnโ€™t, coming from her.

โ€œYou donโ€™t need to worry about Eve calling me.โ€ Grayson clipped his words. โ€œYou donโ€™t need to worry about Eve and me, period.โ€

โ€œToby said that Vincent Blake survived his double bypass.โ€ Averyโ€™s own tone was measured. โ€œHeโ€™s expected to make a full recovery.โ€ She took a step toward him, just as measured as her words. โ€œToby asked me to tell you that Eve has been surveilling your sisters.โ€

โ€œI am aware.โ€ Grayson gave her a quelling look meant to end this conversation, but she was Avery Grambs, and he was Grayson Hawthorne, and sheโ€™d never once been quelled by anything heโ€™d thrown at her.

โ€œEve sent someone toย watchย your sisters,โ€ Avery reiterated, โ€œbut thatโ€™s all she did, Graysonโ€”surveillance, nothing else. Eve hasnโ€™t made a move against your family. Tobyโ€™s sure of it.โ€

Grayson had been raised a skeptic, but Avery, he bone-deep believed.

โ€œTobyโ€™s sure of it,โ€ he echoed. โ€œAnd youโ€™re sure of him.โ€

โ€œHe called meย horrible girl.โ€ Avery smiled wistfully. โ€œHeโ€™s telling the truth.โ€

โ€œYou are pretty horrible,โ€ Grayson agreed, his tone deadpan, a ghost of a smile pulling at his lips. His mind began sifting through the implications of Tobyโ€™s claim, disassembling a puzzle Grayson had thought was solved, piecing the elements back together a different way.

โ€œWhat are you thinking?โ€ Avery prodded.

Grayson removed his phone from his pocket to call his brothers. โ€œIโ€™m thinking that if Tobyโ€™s right, if the FBIโ€™s sudden burst of interest in the Sheffield Grayson case really wasnโ€™t Eveโ€™s doingโ€”I need to get back to Phoenix.โ€
