That night, Grayson went swimmingโnot to forget this time, but to stall. It didnโt work. He felt Averyโs presence the moment she stepped onto the patio. He took one more lap, then pulled himself out of the pool.
Avery eyed the drawing on his torso. โIโm not going to ask.โ Grayson bared his teeth. โPlease donโt.โ
โJameson told me about your sisters.โ Avery gave him a look, one of those very Avery expressions that was worth a thousand words. In this case, her eyes said,ย Iโm sorry youโre in pain.ย The set of her mouth said,ย You should have called me.ย The delicate line of her jaw said,ย You continue to be one of the most infuriating men on the planet.
Grayson couldnโt argue any of those points, so he rebutted her verbal statement instead. โI didnโt tell Jameson that much.โ
โYou told him enough,โ Avery shot back. โIf I could go back in time to when your father kidnapped me, when Mellie shot himโIโd call the police.โ
Regret.ย Grayson recognized the depth of emotion in her tone all too well.
โToby and Oren took care of it,โ Avery said. โBut I shouldnโt have let them. Calling the police would have led to a media circus, but we would have survived.โ
Grayson brought his eyes to hers and didnโt speak until he was certain that she wouldnโt look away again. โWe do that,โ he told her quietly. โSurvive.โ
Avery smiled, a barely there hint of a smile, and Grayson realized
suddenly that for the first time since heโd met Avery Grambs, there was nothing tense or painful about standing this close to her.
Sheโd told him once that they were family. Maybe a part of him had been running from that, too.
โWhat do your sisters think happened to their father?โ Avery always had a way of cutting straight to the questions that mattered most.
โI donโt know for sure what they believe,โ Grayson told her. โPopular consensus is that he skipped town. I think they think that heโs capable of that now. They know heโs under FBI investigation.โ
โSo maybe he did skip town,โ Avery told Grayson. โBut maybe he hired someone to go after me on his way. You donโt have to tell your sisters everything, but you could tell them he was behind the bombing, tell them that you were protecting them from the truth and protecting me from having to relive the worst time of my life.โ
This is Avery, protecting me.ย โAs a general rule,โ Grayson told her, โvoluntarily opening a can of worms rarely goes well.โ
โAs a general rule, Gray, when people get close to you, you bolt.โ
No one except his brothers was allowed to talk to him like that. No one except her.
โToby called me,โ Avery continued after a moment. โHe was under the impression that Eve called you.โ
What seemed on the surface like a subject change probably wasnโt, coming from her.
โYou donโt need to worry about Eve calling me.โ Grayson clipped his words. โYou donโt need to worry about Eve and me, period.โ
โToby said that Vincent Blake survived his double bypass.โ Averyโs own tone was measured. โHeโs expected to make a full recovery.โ She took a step toward him, just as measured as her words. โToby asked me to tell you that Eve has been surveilling your sisters.โ
โI am aware.โ Grayson gave her a quelling look meant to end this conversation, but she was Avery Grambs, and he was Grayson Hawthorne, and sheโd never once been quelled by anything heโd thrown at her.
โEve sent someone toย watchย your sisters,โ Avery reiterated, โbut thatโs all she did, Graysonโsurveillance, nothing else. Eve hasnโt made a move against your family. Tobyโs sure of it.โ
Grayson had been raised a skeptic, but Avery, he bone-deep believed.
โTobyโs sure of it,โ he echoed. โAnd youโre sure of him.โ
โHe called meย horrible girl.โ Avery smiled wistfully. โHeโs telling the truth.โ
โYou are pretty horrible,โ Grayson agreed, his tone deadpan, a ghost of a smile pulling at his lips. His mind began sifting through the implications of Tobyโs claim, disassembling a puzzle Grayson had thought was solved, piecing the elements back together a different way.
โWhat are you thinking?โ Avery prodded.
Grayson removed his phone from his pocket to call his brothers. โIโm thinking that if Tobyโs right, if the FBIโs sudden burst of interest in the Sheffield Grayson case really wasnโt Eveโs doingโI need to get back to Phoenix.โ
