Nash and Xander were waiting in the black-card suite. The puzzle box was on the floor. One glance told Grayson that his brothers had gotten as far on it as he, Gigi, and Savannah had.
โItโs obvious what we need.โ Xander eyed the opening in the boxโs surface.
โJust havenโt found it yet,โ Nash put in.
Grayson got the distinct feeling his brothers were avoiding asking about the FBI situation on purpose.ย Their version of giving me space.
โAnd you wonโt find it,โ Grayson replied. He walked over to the hotel desk and retrieved the small not-a-USB-drive from the drawer. โWhat youโre looking for wasnโt built into the box. He brought it with him each time he visited his sister.โ
โHe, as inโฆ your father.โ Xander was treading carefully now. Given that he was the second-least-cautious Hawthorne, that really said something.
โIsaiah is a father, Xan.โ Grayson fought every ounce of emotion that wanted to creep its way into those words. โSheffield Grayson was something else.โ
Nash looked at Grayson for a long moment. โThings okay back at the house?โ
Grayson studied the exact expression on his oldest brotherโs face. โAlisa called you,โ he surmised.
โShe did,โ Nash confirmed. โSheโll do whatever you need.โ His lips twitched up on the ends. โAnd knowing Lee-Lee, sheโll enjoy it.โ
โOnly if it gets nasty,โ Xander interjected.
โItโs already nasty.โ Grayson kept his explanation brief and to the point: โSheffield Grayson was allegedly siphoning money from his company, thereby cheating the majority owner out of significant profits. That owner was his mother-in-law. Sheโs dead now, and her stake in the company passed to Acacia and the twins. The company was sold. My so-called father emptied Acaciaโs trust shortly thereafter but wasnโt able to touch the trusts belonging to the girls.โ
โAnd as a bonus, the guyโs gone missing.โ Nash let out a long, low whistle.
Nash knew that Sheffield Grayson wasnโtย missing. Grayson knew that he knew. โNow Eveโs sniffing around,โ Grayson continued, the muscles in his jaw going stone hard. โShe knows what happened. Todayโs search? Probably courtesy of her.โ
Someoneย had been pulling strings, and Eve had made it clear she wasnโt above playing power games.
โEve?โ Nash repeated. โYour head on straight, Gray?โ There wasnโt an ounce of judgment in that question.
There didnโt need to be for Grayson to judge himself. โIsnโt it always?โ he replied, his tone a match for his expressionโlike it had been carved from ice.
โBetrayed by the Girl with the Face of Your Dead Girlfriend: The Grayson Hawthorne Story.โ Xander jumped down off the desk.
Grayson felt his eyes turn to slits. โNot now, Alexander.โ
โToo fresh?โ Xander asked. โSorry, double sorry, triple, up to and including octuple sorry. You needed someone to get you out of your own head, and Nash keeps telling me that there are times when tackling people is inappropriate.โ
โMost times,โ Nash said.
Xander was not so convinced. โPersonally, I think tackling is a valid love language, but letโs not debate semantics here.โ He brought his eyes to rest on Graysonโs. โWhat do you need?โ
Being a Hawthorne meant many things, and the best of those was this.
Them. Us.ย โGot any cookies?โ Grayson asked quietly.
โI always have cookies!โ Xander disappeared into the suiteโs kitchen and came back with a half-empty package of double-stuffed Oreos and the
single tallest Oreo that Grayson had ever seen. โOctuple-stuffed Oreo?โ Xander offered.
Grayson took it.
โIt was made with love,โ Xander told him. โJust like I tackle with love.โ โNo tackling,โ Nash said.
Grayson ate the cookie in silence, and thenโand only thenโdid he speak. โIโm slipping.โ His brothers were the only people in the world he could have admitted that to. โGetting too emotionally involved.โ
โWith Eve?โ Xander asked.
Grayson set his jaw. โWith Gigi and Savannahโand even with their mother.โ
โThatโs not slipping, Gray.โ Nash had a way of going quiet just when the things he was saying mattered most. โThatโs living.โ
Inexplicably, Grayson thoughtโagainโabout that damn ring. โI need to focus.โ
โOn opening the puzzle box?โ Xander guessed.
โOpening it. Going through its contents.โ Grayson came to stand directly over the puzzle box. โRemoving anything that could tie Sheffield Grayson to the attacks on Avery and anything that suggests he didnโt just disappear. Then Iโll reassemble a harmless version of the box and its contents to give back to the girls.โ
โAre you okay with that?โ Xander asked.
Grayson thought of the way his sisters had come to stand between him and their aunt. Protecting him. He thought about Acacia, squeezing his hand.
Are you okay with that?
Grayson knelt and fit the not-a-USB into the box. โI have to be.โ
