Chapter no 55 – GRAYSON

The Brothers Hawthorne

Grayson made it exactly one step into the lobby before the manager locked on to his position and walked briskly to greet him. โ€œMr. Hawthorne, I wanted to apologize for the misunderstanding earlier, with your guest.โ€

Gigi.ย The second Grayson thought the name, an image of her face came to him: bright blue eyes going round at him as she realized exactly who he was to her.

โ€œItโ€™s fine,โ€ Grayson said, and a less ambitious hotel manager would have taken his tone as a dismissal.

This woman, however, was not so easily put off. โ€œWould you like me to clear the pool?โ€

Grayson stepped out onto the pavement and became immediately aware of two facts. The first was that the pool wasย notย empty. And the second was that the person treading water in the deep end was Eve.

โ€œDoes it pain you?โ€ โ€œMy existence?โ€

โ€œYour wound.โ€ Grayson has the sudden urge to brush her hair gently back from the bruise. He dismisses itโ€”brutally, absolutely.

โ€œSome people would want me to say yes.โ€ Thereโ€™s a challenge in Eveโ€™s words. โ€œSome people want to think that girls like me are weak.โ€

Graysonย will notย touch herโ€”but he steps closer. โ€œPain doesnโ€™t make you weak.โ€

Eveโ€™s eyes lock on his, and for a moment, she looks nothing like Emily. โ€œYou donโ€™t really believe that, Grayson Hawthorne.โ€

Snapping out of it, Grayson channeled an apathy capable of icing out everything else. Heโ€™d been a fool, and no one got to make a fool of Grayson Hawthorne twice.

He turned, fully intending to leave. Mattias Slater stepped out of the shadows. In daylight, the sentinelโ€™s dark-blond hair bordered on gold, but his eyes still looked almost black. With a single step, he blocked Graysonโ€™s path back inside.

Fast. Unafraid. Armed.ย All aspects of Graysonโ€™s earlier assessment still seemed to apply. The ink on the sentinelโ€™s biceps was more visible nowโ€” not one tattoo, but many: thick, black, curving lines, like tally marks reflected in a fun house mirror.

Or claw marks.ย โ€œGet out of my way,โ€ Grayson ordered. Mattias Slater did not get out of his way.

Grayson side-stepped. His opponent anticipated the move and blocked him again. Grayson turned and began striding toward a side gate, but before he could make it there, he heard the audible click of a gun.

Youโ€™re not going to shoot me, Mattias.ย Grayson didnโ€™t turn around. He didnโ€™t so much as break his stride. But the next thing he heard was Eve climbing out of the pool, andย thatย froze him in his spot.

It shouldnโ€™t have. He knew better.

โ€œHello, Grayson.โ€ Eveโ€™s wet feet were audible against the pavement as she walked toward him.

โ€œI have nothing to say to you.โ€ Grayson forced his body to move, but Mattias Slater was suddenly in front of him, blocking the gate.

โ€œThatโ€™s a lie.โ€ Eve passed him, then turned slowly toward him, leaving them face-to-face. โ€œBut then, we always were liars.โ€

Grayson felt those wordsโ€”and her presenceโ€”in a deep and hollow place. A singular muscle in his jaw tensed. โ€œThere is noย we, Eve.โ€

โ€œAt least when I lie, thereโ€™s a utility to it. A purpose.โ€ Eve took a single step forward. โ€œAt least I donโ€™t lie to myself.โ€

Sheโ€™d used him. Sheโ€™d made him a pawn, then discarded him. She had come after his family. Apathy was what she deservedโ€”theย bestย she deserved, and that only because Grayson wouldnโ€™t risk the complications

that could come with exacting a fair price for her betrayal.

So she gotย nothing.ย โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ Grayson said, a Hawthorne question, more order or demand.

Eve responded with a question of her own. โ€œHow are things going with your sisters?โ€

Fury surged inside Grayson. If that was a threatโ€ฆ

โ€œItโ€™s not easy,โ€ Eve continued. โ€œComing to a family as an outsider, seeing what might have been. Whatย youย might have been if things had been different.โ€

Grayson saw how she was playing this.ย We are not the same, Eve.ย โ€œYou made your choice.โ€ His voice was low and full of warning.

She should have taken that warning.

She didnโ€™t. โ€œDo you want me to say that I regret what I did to be named Vincent Blakeโ€™s heir? That I wish Iโ€™d chosen to remain at your mercy? Atย hers?โ€ That was a reference to Avery. It had to be. โ€œDo you expect me to stand here and tell you that money and power donโ€™t matter?โ€

Of course they did. โ€œI donโ€™t expect anything from you.โ€ There wasnโ€™t a hint of emotion in Graysonโ€™s toneโ€”no way in, no weakness for her to exploit.

โ€œYou have no idea what itโ€™s like to be me right now, Gray.โ€

Sheโ€™d called him Gray. If she expected that to affect him in any way, she was going to be disappointed. โ€œYou got what you wanted,โ€ he replied with searing, emotionless precision. โ€œYouโ€™re the sole heir to a massive fortune.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m alone.โ€ The words slipped from her mouth like a confession. Vulnerability had always been Eveโ€™s weapon of choice.

โ€œI have to prove myself every day,โ€ she continued, โ€œknowing that if I fail, heโ€™ll take the seals from me one by one, and Iโ€™ll be left with nothing.โ€ She met his eyes, waiting for a response, and when she didnโ€™t get one, she turned to her guard. โ€œSlate, tell Grayson how many of my great-grandfatherโ€™s men are loyal to me.โ€

Mattias Slaterโ€™s face remained neutral, dangerously so. โ€œOne.โ€

You, Grayson thought.

Eve grabbed Graysonโ€™s chin, wrenching his gaze back toward hers. โ€œWould you at least look at me?โ€

Why would I?ย โ€œWhat do you want from me, Eve?โ€

Something like hurt flickered in her eyes. โ€œWhat do I want from you?โ€

Eve drew in a breath. Then another. โ€œNothing.โ€ She raised her chin. โ€œYet. When I want something from you, youโ€™ll know.โ€

She was baiting him. And, damn it, he took the bait. โ€œStay away from Gigi and Savannah,โ€ Grayson bit out, brutal force in each word.

โ€œIs that what Tobias Hawthorne would do?โ€ Eve said. โ€œWould he give away leverage? Would you, Gray?โ€ Eveโ€™s stare was just as piercing as hisโ€” when she wanted it to be. โ€œI wonderโ€ฆ What did you and your sisters find in that safe-deposit box?โ€

That wasย definitelyย a threat. โ€œMove,โ€ Grayson ordered in a tone that could have been described asย arctic. โ€œCall off your attack dog and get out of my way.โ€

โ€œOr what?โ€ Eve looked at him in a way designed to make him look at her.

โ€œMove,โ€ Grayson repeated, enunciating the word, โ€œor I will move you.โ€

She didnโ€™t. โ€œLie all you want, Grayson. To yourself. To me. But donโ€™t forget that I know your father isnโ€™tย missing. And the only thing keeping my lips sealed about the people responsible is the promise of an honor-bound old man who wonโ€™t be around forever.โ€ She stared at and into him. โ€œYouโ€™ll want to be on my good side then.โ€

And there it was. โ€œIf you come at Avery,โ€ Grayson said, matching her threat with one of his own, โ€œif you even think of coming near my sisters, Iโ€™ll destroy you.โ€

Eve brought her lips to whisper directly in his ear. โ€œIs that a promise?โ€
