Chapter no 4 – GRAYSON

The Brothers Hawthorne

It had been years since Grayson had stepped foot in London, but the flat looked just the same: same historical facade, same modern interior, same twin terraces, same exquisite view.

Same four brothers taking in that view.

Beside Grayson, Jameson cocked an eyebrow at Nash. โ€œWhatโ€™s the situation, cowboy?โ€ Grayson had been wondering the same thing. Nash almost never used his yearly nine-one-one.

โ€œThis.โ€ Their oldest brother plunked a velvet box down on the glass-top table. Aย ringย box. Grayson found himself suddenly unable to blink as Nash flipped it open to reveal a remarkable piece: a black opal wrapped in intricate diamond leaves and set in platinum. The flecks of color in the gemstone were electric, the workmanship without peer. โ€œNan gave it to me,โ€ Nash said. โ€œIt was our grandmotherโ€™s.โ€

Nash was the only one of them with memories of Alice Hawthorne, whoโ€™d died before the rest of the Hawthorne brothers were even born.

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t her wedding or engagement ring,โ€ Nash drawled. โ€œBut Nan thought it would suit Lib.โ€ Nash bowed his head slightly. โ€œFor that purpose.โ€

Libย as inย Libby Grambs, Nashโ€™s partner, Averyโ€™s sister. Grayson felt a breath catch in his throat.

โ€œOur great-grandmother gave you a family ring for Libby,โ€ Xander summarized, โ€œand thatโ€™s a problem?โ€

โ€œIt is,โ€ Nash confirmed.

Grayson expelled the breath. โ€œBecause youโ€™re not ready.โ€

Nash looked up and cracked a slow and devious grin. โ€œBecause I already bought her one myself.โ€ He plunked a second ring box down on the table. One by one, the muscles over Graysonโ€™s rib cage tightened, and he wasnโ€™t even sure why.

Jameson, whoโ€™d gone unnaturally still the moment heโ€™d seen the first ring, snapped out of it and flicked open the second box. It was empty.

Nash already proposed. He and Libby are already engaged.ย The realization hit Grayson with startling force.ย Everything is changing.ย That was a useless thought, obvious and overdue. Their grandfather was dead. Theyโ€™d all been disinherited. Everything hadย alreadyย changed. Nash was already with Libby. Jameson was with Avery. Even Xander had Max.

โ€œNash Westbrook Hawthorne,โ€ Xander boomed. โ€œPrepare yourself for a bracing, celebratory hug of manly joy!โ€

Xander did not, in fact, give Nash time to prepare before crashing into himโ€”hugging, grappling, wrestling, attempting to hoist Nash into the air, it was all the same. Jameson joined the melee, and Grayson forced everything else to fade away as he clapped a hand on Nashโ€™s shoulderโ€”then pulled him backward.

Three on one. Nash didnโ€™t stand a chance.

โ€œImpromptu bachelor party!โ€ Jameson declared when the four of them finally broke apart. โ€œGive me an hour.โ€

โ€œStop.โ€ Nash held up a hand, then followed his firstย whoโ€™s-the-oldest-brother-hereย order with a second. โ€œTurn.โ€ Jameson obliged, and Nash fixed him with a look. โ€œYou planning on breaking any laws, Jamie? Because youโ€™ve been on quite a kick lately.โ€

To Graysonโ€™s knowledge, there had been an incident in Monaco, another in Belizeโ€ฆ

Jameson gave a little shrug. โ€œYou know what they say, Nash. No charges filed, no harm done.โ€

โ€œIs that what they say?โ€ Nash replied, his tone deceptively mild. And then, inexplicably, Grayson found himself on the end of Nashโ€™sย look.

What did I do?ย Graysonโ€™s eyes narrowed. โ€œYou didnโ€™t bring us here for your own sake.โ€

Nash leaned back. โ€œYou accusinโ€™ me of a being a mother hen, Gray?โ€

โ€œThemโ€™s fighting words,โ€ Xander said happily, altogether too pleased at the prospect.

Nash cast one last look at Grayson, then turned back to Jameson. โ€œImpromptu bachelor party,โ€ he agreed. โ€œBut Gray and Xan will help you planโ€”and tree house rules.โ€

What happened in the tree house stayed in the tree house.
