Chapter no 27 – GRAYSON

The Brothers Hawthorne

Grayson imported the photographs heโ€™d taken of Gigiโ€™s key the night before to his laptop. Using his hand in the photo for scale, he calculated the keyโ€™s dimensions, double-checked those calculations, and used them, along with a ghost image of the key, to begin building a digital model. By the time the Haywood-Astyriaโ€™s personal concierge came to check on him midday, he was nearly done.

โ€œIs there anything we can get you, sir?โ€

For a black-card guest at this establishment, that question didnโ€™t refer only to hotel amenities. โ€œIโ€™m going to need a 3D printer,โ€ Grayson replied. He didnโ€™t have to provide a rationale for the request, so he did not. โ€œPlease.โ€

The concierge left. Grayson finished his work. Saving it, he made a second, nearly identical file, altering the keyโ€™s teeth just enough to render this one useless.ย Sorry, Gigi.ย Not allowing himself to wallow in that thought, he turned his attention to an equally unpleasant one. โ€œWhat exactly does one wear to a high school party?โ€

Even when Grayson had been in high school, he hadnโ€™t ever needed the answer to that question. His brothers had attended such parties occasionally, but Grayson had never seen the point. And if heย hadย gone, he wouldnโ€™t have wasted a single second deciding what to wear. A fine suit was like armor, and Grayson had been raised to walk into every room armed.

But not tonight.

Tonight, he needed to blend in. Unfortunately, Grayson Davenport Hawthorne knew nothing about blending. โ€œShorts?โ€

Thankfully, his phone rang before he could meditate too long on that possibility. โ€œZabrowski,โ€ Grayson answered, sliding smoothly into business mode. โ€œI trust you have answers for me.โ€

If you allow people to fail you, he could hear his grandfather lecturing,

they inevitably will. So donโ€™t give them the option.

โ€œI ran a basic background check on Kent Trowbridge,โ€ the private investigator reported.

โ€œDo I pay you,โ€ Grayson said evenly, โ€œforย basic?โ€

โ€œAnd then I fleshed it out,โ€ Zabrowski said hurriedly. โ€œAs youโ€™ve probably gathered, the guyโ€™s a lawyerโ€”and very connected. Comes from a whole family of lawyers. Or maybeย dynastyย is the better word.โ€

โ€œI take it theyโ€™re financiallyโ€ฆย stable,โ€ Grayson translated.

โ€œVery. And interestingly for your purposes, the guy grew up alongside Acacia Grayson nรฉe Engstrom. The Trowbridge and Engstrom families go way back.โ€

Grayson filed that piece of information away. โ€œAnything else?โ€ โ€œHeโ€™s widowed, one son.โ€

Grayson was well aware of the son. โ€œAnd the Grayson familyโ€™s current financial situation?โ€ The list of assignments heโ€™d given Zabrowski after the conversation heโ€™d overheard between Acacia and Trowbridge was lengthy.

The detective kept his reply short. โ€œNot good.โ€

The muscles in Graysonโ€™s jaw tightened. Heโ€™d kept Zabrowski on retainer to make sure that the girls were taken care of, and he had been given the distinct impression that finances were not an issue in the Grayson householdโ€”and never would be. โ€œExplain.โ€

โ€œWhen the Engstrom matriarch passed away the year before last, everything was left to Acacia and her daughtersโ€”in trusts.โ€

Grayson thought about Acacia saying that her parents were the ones whoโ€™d bankrolled her husbandโ€™s companies. โ€œAnd?โ€ He had no intention of letting Zabrowski off that easily.

โ€œOutside of those trusts, all of Acacia Graysonโ€™s assets were jointly held with her husbandโ€ฆ who has since come under IRS and FBI investigation.โ€

Grayson had never allowed himself a temper, so he didnโ€™t lose it. He didnโ€™t sayย What the hell have I been paying your retainer for?ย He didnโ€™t have to. โ€œWhat kind of investigation?โ€ he demanded with icy, unnatural calm.

That tone had put the fear of God and Hawthornes in better men than the detective. Grayson could practically hear him gulp.

โ€œWhite collar, presumably,โ€ Zabrowski managed. โ€œTax evasion, embezzlement, insider tradingโ€”your guess is as good as mine.โ€

โ€œDo I pay you toย guess?โ€

โ€œPoint is, the joint accounts are frozen.โ€ Zabrowski rushed the words. โ€œSome have already been seized. Someoneโ€™s keeping it out of the press, but

โ€”โ€

โ€œAnd the money left to Acacia in trust?โ€ Grayson asked. Those funds would have been hers and hers alone, not subject to seizure based on her husbandโ€™s crimes unless she was implicated as well.

โ€œGone,โ€ Zabrowski said.

Grayson felt his eyes narrow. โ€œWhat do you mean,ย gone?โ€

โ€œDo you know how many laws I had to break to even get this information?โ€ Zabrowski shot back.

โ€œLetโ€™s assume none,โ€ Grayson said in a tone meant to remind the private investigator that if lawsย hadย been broken, he couldnโ€™t know about it. โ€œContinue.โ€

If Zabrowski resented being given orders by a person less than half his age, he was wise enough not to show it. โ€œAcacia Graysonโ€™s trust was drainedโ€”presumably by her husband before he fled the country.โ€

Sheffield Grayson didnโ€™t flee the country.ย โ€œAnd the girlsโ€™ trusts?โ€ Grayson asked.

โ€œIntact and substantial,โ€ Zabrowski assured him. โ€œBut the Engstroms must have had some reservations about their daughter and her husband, because neither were listed as trustees.โ€

Grayson processed that in an instant and wasted no time with his reply. โ€œAllow me to guess: Kent Trowbridge.โ€

If the joint accounts were frozen and Acaciaโ€™s trust was gone, that almost certainly meant Acacia was using her daughtersโ€™ trusts to fund their living expensesโ€”but as trustee, Trowbridge would have to sign off on those expenditures. Grayson thought back to the night before, to the way the lawyer had put his hand on Acaciaโ€™s shoulder, far too close to her neck.

โ€œKeep digging,โ€ he ordered Zabrowski. โ€œI want a copy of the trust paperwork so I can read through the provisions myself.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t justโ€”โ€

โ€œI am not interested inย canโ€™t.โ€ Grayson lowered his voice. Making someone strain to hear you was one way of ensuring they were that much more motivated to listen. โ€œIโ€™ll also need the details of the IRS and FBI investigationsโ€”but donโ€™t run afoul of either agency yourself.โ€

โ€œThat all?โ€ Zabrowski clearly meant that sarcastically, but Grayson chose to take the question at face value.

โ€œYouโ€™ll find a transfer in your account, twice the retainer Iโ€™ve been paying.โ€ That was another power move: transferring the money before the other person had a chance to decline your offer. โ€œAnd Iโ€™ll need a recommendation.โ€ Grayson pivoted to an easier ask, one to make the man forget for a second or two how tall the rest of the order was. โ€œWho do you have who can discreetly make keys?โ€
