Chapter no 18 – GRAYSON

The Brothers Hawthorne

Grayson pulled the Ferrari past the open gate onto the long drive leading up to the Grayson mansion. The stark-white stucco design was almost obsessively symmetrical, the terra-cotta tiles on the roof matched exactly to the clay-red bricks that lined the drive.

Grayson slowed as he passed an enormous fountain. He clocked the height to which it sprayed and the bronze sculptures rising out of the water: an eagle and a swan. Stepping out of the Ferrari, Grayson found himself thinking about Sheffield Graysonโ€”and the one and only time theyโ€™d met.ย Iโ€™ve built three different companies from the ground up, the man had declared.ย You donโ€™t achieve what I have achieved without an eye to potential eventualities. Potential risks.

That was what Grayson had been to his fatherโ€”all that he had been. A risk.

โ€œSo Iโ€™ve been thinking!โ€ Gigi popped out from behind a palm tree like it was the most natural thing in the world. โ€œYou asked about Mr. Trowbridge, right? And you know how I called him when I got arrested and he did pretty much nothingโ€”like, he didnโ€™t even tell my mom?โ€

Gigiโ€™s tone and the speed with which she talked simultaneously made everything sound like a question and left absolutely no time for a response. โ€œWhat if he knows about the safe-deposit box? What if he has record of the name my dad used to open it?โ€

Grayson was certain that Trowbridge had, in fact, doneย somethingย when Gigi was taken into police custody, because she hadnโ€™t actually been arrested. But right now, he focused on pushing the conversation in another

direction. โ€œIfย your father indeed had a safe-deposit box under a fake name, what makes you think Trowbridge would know that name?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€ Gigi issued the words like they were a dismissal of Graysonโ€™s query, rather than an admission that she hadnโ€™t thought this through. โ€œMy dad was obviously taking precautions.โ€ Gigi lowered her voice. โ€œMaybe it has something to do with the guys in the suits.โ€

Only show surprise if itโ€™s to your advantage to do so.ย โ€œWhat guys in suits?โ€

โ€œWhoโ€™s to say?โ€ Gigi gave an adorable little shrug. โ€œI only saw them once when they came to talk to my mom. I was supposed to be in school, but Iโ€™m a firm believer in unschooling and also I had cramps, soโ€ฆโ€ Another shrug.

โ€œMen in suits came to your home?โ€ Grayson pushed her to focus. โ€œAnd spoke with your mother.โ€

โ€œAfter they left, I heard her crying. I told Savannah, and she said it was probably nothing, but aliens could land on top of the portico and Savannah would still tell me that it was nothing.โ€

There were a limited number of possibilities for the scenario that Gigi had described with the โ€œmen in suitsโ€โ€”none of them good.ย Note to self, Grayson thought,ย fire Zabrowski.

โ€œAnd if aliens did land on the portico,โ€ Gigi continued buoyantly, โ€œdo you know who the Grayson family would call?ย Mr. Trowbridge.ย So I say we get up close and personal with his files. If we find the name,ย boom!ย We go back to the bank and finagle our way into that box. And donโ€™t tell me we canโ€™t because Iโ€™m pretty sureย youย can.โ€

Steal her key. Subvert her search for the name.

โ€œAssume everything goes according to this plan of yours,โ€ Grayson instructed. โ€œYou intend to go back to the bank where you were very recently arrested?โ€ He used a tone designed to make her squirm, but she was, apparently, immune.

โ€œWeโ€™ll mosey across that bridge when we come to it. In the meantime, our next move is obvious.โ€

Talk to Trowbridge, Grayson filled in silently. โ€œParty!โ€ Gigi declared.

โ€œI do not thinkย obviousย means what you think it means,โ€ Grayson informed her.

โ€œTrust me,โ€ Gigi said, then she tugged him onto the porch. โ€œCome on!โ€

Grayson let himself be led but balked when she threw open the front door to reveal a vast foyer with marble pillars. Compared to Hawthorne House, the Grayson mansion was nothing. The extravagance shouldnโ€™t have intimidated him in the least.

Theย extravaganceย didnโ€™t.

My nephew was the closest thing I will ever have to a son.ย Grayson could hear the words like Sheffield Grayson was standing right beside him.

โ€œLook, โ€˜Grayson,โ€™โ€ Gigi said cheerfully, โ€œwe could stand here debating whether or not youโ€™re going to come in or whether or not my plan is pure genius, or we could jump straight to the part where you give in.โ€ Gigi ducked out of view and popped back up a moment later holding what appeared to be a very large housecat that resembled a small leopard. โ€œThis is Katara. Sheโ€™s a s*xy beast that loves cuddles butย willย scratch you if the situation calls for it.โ€

Grayson banished the memory of his fatherโ€™s voice. The second he stepped across the threshold, the cat leapt out of Gigiโ€™s arms and took off in one direction, while Gigi bounded off in another.

โ€œWhere are you going?โ€ Grayson called after her.

โ€œParty!โ€ she called back, like that was an answer. โ€œI know someone who can help.โ€
