Chapter no 20 – GRAYSON

The Brothers Hawthorne

Acacia closed the patio doors behind them, sequestering herself and Grayson in the kitchen. She had blonde hair the same light shade as Savannahโ€™s. She was taller than his own mother and wispy thin.

Thinking of Skye had a way of opening old wounds, so Grayson didnโ€™t. โ€œHow long have you known?โ€ Grayson hadnโ€™t planned to seize control of this conversation with his fatherโ€™s wife, but some habits were hard to break. โ€œAbout you?โ€ Acacia walked to take a seat at a round glass table. โ€œNot nearly long enough. I would like to think that if I had known earlier, I could have influenced Sheff to do the right thing.โ€ She closed her eyes, just for a moment, and Grayson found himself inexplicably thinking of childrenโ€™s paintings and tiny handprints in cement. Both had, in all likelihood, been her doing. โ€œI would like to believe,โ€ Acacia continued softly, โ€œthat Iโ€™m the kind of person who would never hold a child responsible for the actions of

his parents.โ€

Betrayal. An affair.ย Those were the actions she spoke of. Pushing down all other thoughts, Grayson took a seat across from Acacia. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t judge you if you despised me.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t.โ€ Acacia looked down. โ€œTwenty-two months. Thatโ€™s the straight answer to your question. I found out about you the day of my motherโ€™s funeral, twenty-two months ago.โ€

Grayson did the math for himself. Twenty-two months ago, Sheffield Grayson had still been aliveโ€”and so had the old man.ย Who would tell a grieving daughter something like that on the day she buries her mother?

โ€œI am not here to disrupt your family,โ€ Grayson said. It felt important to

make sure she understood that.

โ€œIf you want to get to know the girls, Grayson, I wonโ€™t stop you.โ€

Thatโ€™s not what Iโ€™m here for. That isnโ€™t what this is about.ย โ€œGigi doesnโ€™t know who I am.โ€

Acacia let out a shaky breath. โ€œI shouldnโ€™t be grateful about that, but children look at you differently after they know.โ€ She let her gaze go back to the patio, where Savannah no longer stood. โ€œAnd once they know that you know.โ€

Clearly, Acaciaโ€™s awareness had been news to Savannah, but the fact that Savannah knew about Graysonโ€™s existence hadnโ€™t surprised her mother. โ€œHow long has Savannah known about me?โ€ he asked.

โ€œSince the summer she was fourteen.โ€ Acaciaโ€™s voice was steady. โ€œI didnโ€™t know what had changed at the time, but itโ€™s obvious now.โ€

Graysonโ€™s jaw hardened. โ€œHe made her keep his secret?โ€ Grayson didnโ€™t say his fatherโ€™s name. He wouldnโ€™t inflict the phraseย your husbandย on the woman across from him. But what his words lacked in specificity his tone made up for.

โ€œI doubt Sheff had to make Savannah do anything.โ€ Acaciaโ€™s voice was almost too calm. โ€œFrom what I understand, my parents knew for much longer. Since beforeโ€ฆโ€ Her hand trembled slightly on the table. โ€œSince before you were born. I donโ€™t know the details, but I suspect my mother had a word with Sheff. I can just hear her telling him that affairs were one thing, but for goodnessโ€™ sake, be discreet, the way my father was.โ€

Getting your affair partner pregnant was not discreet, especially when her last name was Hawthorne.

โ€œThe money was theirs, you know.โ€ Acacia went quiet. The silence was heavy. โ€œAll of this, the seed funding for all of Sheffโ€™s venturesโ€ฆโ€ She swallowed. โ€œIf my mother confronted Sheff, itโ€™s likely she issued some very pointed threats.โ€

Grayson processed that. โ€œHe gave me the impression that he was a self-made man.โ€

โ€œI was unaware that the two of you had met.โ€ Acacia looked down again.

Grayson felt a stab of sympathy but knew he had to preempt any questions she might ask about that meeting. โ€œMy grandfather had just passed away.โ€ฆโ€

โ€œYes. Of course.โ€ Acacia blinked rapidly. โ€œIโ€™m very sorry.โ€

Sheโ€™s trying not to cry.ย โ€œNot as sorry as I am,โ€ Grayson told her. His fatherโ€™s wife wasnโ€™t what heโ€™d expected. She hadnโ€™t lashed out at him once. There was something soโ€ฆย maternalย about her.

โ€œYouโ€™re welcome here, Grayson.โ€ Acaciaโ€™s voice was hoarse, but she raised her head, setting her jaw. โ€œFor as long as you want.โ€

Grayson couldnโ€™t afford to let that mean much. โ€œI suspect Savannah would disagree.โ€

โ€œSavannah lived to make Sheff proud,โ€ Acacia said softly. โ€œShe was a colicky baby, quiet and serious as a toddler. And Gigi wasโ€ฆ not.โ€ Grayson suspected that was an understatement. โ€œI used to worry that Savannah would get lost. Her sister lookedโ€”looksโ€”quite a bit like my husbandโ€™s late nephew.โ€

Colin, Grayson thought.ย The reason your husband was out for vengeance.

โ€œBetween the resemblance and Gigi being such a cheerful little thing, she had Sheff wrapped around her finger from day one. Savannah always seemed keenly aware of that, even as a baby. But she found her way. She shot her first basket when she was five and never looked back.โ€

Grayson remembered something, then. โ€œColin played basketball.โ€ After his death, Sheffield Grayson had founded a nonprofit sports charity in his nephewโ€™s honor.

โ€œSo did Sheff, in college. He drove Colin so hard, had such hopes for him.โ€ฆโ€

And then Colin died. Because of the Hawthorne family.ย โ€œSavannah let him recapture some of that,โ€ Grayson inferred. It was the logical conclusion, and he was nothing if not logical.

โ€œAs much as any daughter could.โ€ Acacia drew in another breath. โ€œSavannah is going to judge me for staying with her father once I knew. To her, that will seem weak.โ€ She brought her gaze back to Graysonโ€™s. โ€œBut I assure you, I am not.โ€

No. You are not.ย โ€œGigi told me that you were recently visited by gentlemen in suits.โ€

To Acacia, that would seem like it had come out of nowhere, but that was the point. Less time for her to cover, less opportunity to manage her reaction.

โ€œGigi is mistaken.โ€

โ€œIf you need anythingโ€ฆ,โ€ Grayson said.

Gigi skidded into the kitchen. โ€œI texted Duncan from Savannahโ€™s phone. Partyโ€™s on for tomorrow night! In the meantime, whoโ€™s ready for step negative one?โ€

โ€œStep negative one?โ€ Grayson repeated.

โ€œTwo steps before step one,โ€ Acacia clarified, and she met Graysonโ€™s eyes with a clear, silent message: Their heart-to-heart was over.

โ€œGigi got herself arrested.โ€ Savannah didnโ€™t come all the way into the kitchen as she let that bomb drop.ย Keeping her distance from her motherโ€” and me.

โ€œEt tu, Brute?โ€ Gigi said to her twin, then she turned to Grayson, her eyes narrowing as she realized where Savannah must have gotten her information. โ€œAnd etย tu, Brute?โ€ she repeated, then cocked her head to the side. โ€œWhatโ€™s the plural of Brute?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a name,โ€ Grayson told her. โ€œNot typically pluralized.โ€

โ€œFascinating!โ€ Gigi declared. โ€œMuch more interesting than anything that may or may not have resulted in my calling the family lawyerโ€”who, by the way, left me in jail overnight and most of the next day!โ€

Acacia held up a hand. โ€œBack up. Jail?โ€ โ€œItโ€™s taken care of,โ€ Grayson cut in.

Acacia gave him a look: part admonition, part warning,ย motherly. But she let the interruption slide. โ€œWell, then. Iโ€™ll let the three of you get to step negative one. Savannah?โ€ Acacia met her daughterโ€™s eyes. โ€œBe nice.โ€
