Acacia closed the patio doors behind them, sequestering herself and Grayson in the kitchen. She had blonde hair the same light shade as Savannahโs. She was taller than his own mother and wispy thin.
Thinking of Skye had a way of opening old wounds, so Grayson didnโt. โHow long have you known?โ Grayson hadnโt planned to seize control of this conversation with his fatherโs wife, but some habits were hard to break. โAbout you?โ Acacia walked to take a seat at a round glass table. โNot nearly long enough. I would like to think that if I had known earlier, I could have influenced Sheff to do the right thing.โ She closed her eyes, just for a moment, and Grayson found himself inexplicably thinking of childrenโs paintings and tiny handprints in cement. Both had, in all likelihood, been her doing. โI would like to believe,โ Acacia continued softly, โthat Iโm the kind of person who would never hold a child responsible for the actions of
his parents.โ
Betrayal. An affair.ย Those were the actions she spoke of. Pushing down all other thoughts, Grayson took a seat across from Acacia. โI wouldnโt judge you if you despised me.โ
โI donโt.โ Acacia looked down. โTwenty-two months. Thatโs the straight answer to your question. I found out about you the day of my motherโs funeral, twenty-two months ago.โ
Grayson did the math for himself. Twenty-two months ago, Sheffield Grayson had still been aliveโand so had the old man.ย Who would tell a grieving daughter something like that on the day she buries her mother?
โI am not here to disrupt your family,โ Grayson said. It felt important to
make sure she understood that.
โIf you want to get to know the girls, Grayson, I wonโt stop you.โ
Thatโs not what Iโm here for. That isnโt what this is about.ย โGigi doesnโt know who I am.โ
Acacia let out a shaky breath. โI shouldnโt be grateful about that, but children look at you differently after they know.โ She let her gaze go back to the patio, where Savannah no longer stood. โAnd once they know that you know.โ
Clearly, Acaciaโs awareness had been news to Savannah, but the fact that Savannah knew about Graysonโs existence hadnโt surprised her mother. โHow long has Savannah known about me?โ he asked.
โSince the summer she was fourteen.โ Acaciaโs voice was steady. โI didnโt know what had changed at the time, but itโs obvious now.โ
Graysonโs jaw hardened. โHe made her keep his secret?โ Grayson didnโt say his fatherโs name. He wouldnโt inflict the phraseย your husbandย on the woman across from him. But what his words lacked in specificity his tone made up for.
โI doubt Sheff had to make Savannah do anything.โ Acaciaโs voice was almost too calm. โFrom what I understand, my parents knew for much longer. Since beforeโฆโ Her hand trembled slightly on the table. โSince before you were born. I donโt know the details, but I suspect my mother had a word with Sheff. I can just hear her telling him that affairs were one thing, but for goodnessโ sake, be discreet, the way my father was.โ
Getting your affair partner pregnant was not discreet, especially when her last name was Hawthorne.
โThe money was theirs, you know.โ Acacia went quiet. The silence was heavy. โAll of this, the seed funding for all of Sheffโs venturesโฆโ She swallowed. โIf my mother confronted Sheff, itโs likely she issued some very pointed threats.โ
Grayson processed that. โHe gave me the impression that he was a self-made man.โ
โI was unaware that the two of you had met.โ Acacia looked down again.
Grayson felt a stab of sympathy but knew he had to preempt any questions she might ask about that meeting. โMy grandfather had just passed away.โฆโ
โYes. Of course.โ Acacia blinked rapidly. โIโm very sorry.โ
Sheโs trying not to cry.ย โNot as sorry as I am,โ Grayson told her. His fatherโs wife wasnโt what heโd expected. She hadnโt lashed out at him once. There was something soโฆย maternalย about her.
โYouโre welcome here, Grayson.โ Acaciaโs voice was hoarse, but she raised her head, setting her jaw. โFor as long as you want.โ
Grayson couldnโt afford to let that mean much. โI suspect Savannah would disagree.โ
โSavannah lived to make Sheff proud,โ Acacia said softly. โShe was a colicky baby, quiet and serious as a toddler. And Gigi wasโฆ not.โ Grayson suspected that was an understatement. โI used to worry that Savannah would get lost. Her sister lookedโlooksโquite a bit like my husbandโs late nephew.โ
Colin, Grayson thought.ย The reason your husband was out for vengeance.
โBetween the resemblance and Gigi being such a cheerful little thing, she had Sheff wrapped around her finger from day one. Savannah always seemed keenly aware of that, even as a baby. But she found her way. She shot her first basket when she was five and never looked back.โ
Grayson remembered something, then. โColin played basketball.โ After his death, Sheffield Grayson had founded a nonprofit sports charity in his nephewโs honor.
โSo did Sheff, in college. He drove Colin so hard, had such hopes for him.โฆโ
And then Colin died. Because of the Hawthorne family.ย โSavannah let him recapture some of that,โ Grayson inferred. It was the logical conclusion, and he was nothing if not logical.
โAs much as any daughter could.โ Acacia drew in another breath. โSavannah is going to judge me for staying with her father once I knew. To her, that will seem weak.โ She brought her gaze back to Graysonโs. โBut I assure you, I am not.โ
No. You are not.ย โGigi told me that you were recently visited by gentlemen in suits.โ
To Acacia, that would seem like it had come out of nowhere, but that was the point. Less time for her to cover, less opportunity to manage her reaction.
โGigi is mistaken.โ
โIf you need anythingโฆ,โ Grayson said.
Gigi skidded into the kitchen. โI texted Duncan from Savannahโs phone. Partyโs on for tomorrow night! In the meantime, whoโs ready for step negative one?โ
โStep negative one?โ Grayson repeated.
โTwo steps before step one,โ Acacia clarified, and she met Graysonโs eyes with a clear, silent message: Their heart-to-heart was over.
โGigi got herself arrested.โ Savannah didnโt come all the way into the kitchen as she let that bomb drop.ย Keeping her distance from her motherโ and me.
โEt tu, Brute?โ Gigi said to her twin, then she turned to Grayson, her eyes narrowing as she realized where Savannah must have gotten her information. โAnd etย tu, Brute?โ she repeated, then cocked her head to the side. โWhatโs the plural of Brute?โ
โItโs a name,โ Grayson told her. โNot typically pluralized.โ
โFascinating!โ Gigi declared. โMuch more interesting than anything that may or may not have resulted in my calling the family lawyerโwho, by the way, left me in jail overnight and most of the next day!โ
Acacia held up a hand. โBack up. Jail?โ โItโs taken care of,โ Grayson cut in.
Acacia gave him a look: part admonition, part warning,ย motherly. But she let the interruption slide. โWell, then. Iโll let the three of you get to step negative one. Savannah?โ Acacia met her daughterโs eyes. โBe nice.โ
