Chapter no 78

Taming 7 (Boys of Tommen, 5)

โ€œGerard, please,โ€ Mam tried to coax, but I couldnโ€™t be talked down or consoled in this moment. I was too far gone. Everything I had worked so hard to build back up after he destroyed me had been snuffed out in an instant.

I didnโ€™t know how I got home from the dance. I didnโ€™t know if I was in another nightmare, or if I was even breathing. I couldnโ€™t make sense of a fucking word of anything.

โ€ฆ His hand was on the back of my neck, pinning my face into the mattress. โ€œDaddy,โ€ I tried to scream, but he couldnโ€™t hear me all the way from heaven. โ€œCome back and take me with you.โ€

โ€œJust stay down and take it, you little bastard!โ€

โ€œIt hurts,โ€ I strangled out, body bowing in agony when I felt something impale me from behind, ripping my small body in half.

โ€œThatโ€™s it,โ€ he grunted as he continued to hurt me, pushing me, deeper, harder, rougher. โ€œIโ€™ll make a fucking man out of you, ya little pussy.โ€

โ€œStop.โ€ I was crying. I knew I was. My mouth was open, I could feel tears trickling down my cheeks, but my voice wasnโ€™t coming out. โ€œPlease stop.โ€

Numb, I felt the life leave my body, fading quicker every time he rammed his privates into mine, as the pain grew worse, and my mind started to wander away โ€ฆ

Feeling cornered, I came out swinging, ripping and tearing at anything I could get my hands on in the moment, seeing nothing but his face everywhere I turned. โ€œKeith, stop him, please! Heโ€™s going to hurt himself!โ€ I could hear my mother saying somewhere in theย distance, but her face was gone from my sight. I couldnโ€™t see anything butย him.

โ€ฆ Curled up in a ball on my bed, I watched as he stood over me and zipped up his school trousers. He wore the ones the older boys wore. The boys who went to secondary school.

โ€œYou know the score, baby brother.โ€ Sitting down on the edge of my bed, he pushed my hair out of my face and reached between my legs. โ€œKeep your mouth shut and Iโ€™ll keep going easy on you.โ€

Trembling, I didnโ€™t dare answer him or look in his direction. I knew better. I knew what happened when I didnโ€™t behave. When I didnโ€™t give him what he wanted.

โ€œGood boy. Youโ€™re always okay, arenโ€™t ya?โ€ He stroked my cheek and then stood back up. โ€œIโ€™ll see you tomorrow night.โ€

I waited until my door was closed before checking myself over and pulling my Power Rangers pajama bottoms into place, shuddering when my hand emerged with the familiar sight of blood โ€ฆ

I knew I had lost touch with reality. I could feel my sanity slipping away at the school. The tiny shred of dignity and pride I had managed to hold onto for the past ten years had finally upped and left me.

โ€œ โ€ฆ Iโ€™m going to marry you when Iโ€™m a big girl,โ€ she told me, reaching across to press her Barbieโ€™s face to my action figure. โ€œYouโ€™ll be my shiny prince in the white garner, and Iโ€™ll be the princess.โ€ When she grinned at me, I felt my lips smile back. Because she didnโ€™t have any front teeth and I thought she looked so silly.

โ€œYouโ€™re really going to marry me?โ€

โ€œUh-huh.โ€ Her brown eyes were big and happy, and she smelled like sunshine. โ€œIโ€™m going to take you to my castle in the north pole, where we can build snowmen all day and Santa flies over our castle every night to give us presents.โ€

โ€œDoes your castle have a chimney?โ€

โ€œHmm, donโ€™t think so.โ€

โ€œThen how is Santa going to leave us presents?โ€

โ€œSantaโ€™s super smart,โ€ she explained. โ€œHeโ€™ll get your daddy to fly down from heaven and use magic to open the door โ€ฆ โ€

โ€œWhat happened to him, Keith?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know, Sadhbh. Maybe he took something at the dance.โ€

โ€œCall one of his friends. If he did, then we need to call for an ambulance!โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll go and get Sinead.โ€

โ€œBe fast about it!โ€

โ€œ โ€ฆ Why would you say that?โ€ Leaping off the couch, Caoimhe moved as far away from me as she could get. Like I was dirty. Like I was bad. โ€œAre you telling lies, Gerard Gibson? Because that is the worst, most awful thing you could say about a person.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know,โ€ I heard myself reply.

โ€œYou donโ€™t know if youโ€™re telling lies or you donโ€™t know why you said it?โ€ she demanded, hands on her hips. โ€œIโ€™ll give you one more chance to tell the truth.โ€ Her eyes looked so mad. โ€œThen Iโ€™m telling your family what you said.โ€

โ€œI โ€ฆ โ€ I shook my head, feeling so sad, because I knew what she wanted me to say, and I wanted to please her. She was my favorite babysitter. She told the best bedtime stories, and nobody came in my room when she was here. I didnโ€™t want her to go. โ€œI โ€ฆ โ€ Frowning, I thought really hard about what to do, trying to find the words that would make her happy and like me again. โ€œI โ€ฆ was โ€ฆ making a joke?โ€

โ€œOh, thank God!โ€ She sighed out this big loud breath and then she came back to me. โ€œYou must never say things like that, Gibs.โ€ She sat down on the couch beside me. โ€œI know I was your babysitter before I was Markโ€™s girlfriend, but you canโ€™t make up stories about him because youโ€™re jealous โ€ฆ โ€

โ€œClaire? Itโ€™s Sadhbh, love. Thereโ€™s something wrong with Gerard. Iย think he might have taken something at the dance. I need you to come home right now. If you know anything about what he might have taken, you need to tell me now.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s she saying?โ€

โ€œWhat, Claire? I can barely hear you, pet. Just calm down and stop screaming, love. Tell me what happened.โ€

โ€œSadhbh?โ€

โ€œShut up, Keith. Iโ€™m trying to hear the girl. The line is bad and sheโ€™s bawling her eyes out.โ€

โ€œSee?โ€ the blonde in the office encouraged, pressing the palm of my hand against her breast. โ€œThat feels nice, doesnโ€™t it?โ€

I nodded slowly.

โ€œHave you touched a woman before?โ€

I shook my head.

โ€œDo you like how it feels?โ€

I nodded again.

โ€œYouโ€™re so cute.โ€ Smiling, she reached for my other hand and pushed it into the waistband of her skirt. โ€œYou can practice on me if you want โ€ฆ โ€

โ€œGibs.โ€

โ€œOh, Johnny, thank God youโ€™re here. Heโ€™s after losing it. I donโ€™t know what to do for him. Heโ€™s after putting his hand through a mirror and everything.โ€

โ€œSadhbh, I need you to read this.โ€

โ€œWhat is it, Johnny?โ€

โ€œJust read it,ย please.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t go near him, Kavanagh. Heโ€™s too out of control.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll be grand. Just give me a few minutes with him.โ€

โ€œKavanagh, be careful, he doesnโ€™t seem to know who we are.โ€

โ€œHe knows who I am, donโ€™t ya, Gibs? Itโ€™s alright, my old buddy. Capโ€™s here.โ€

โ€œAlright, class, eyes to the front of the room,โ€ Mr. Oโ€™Donovan ordered whenย he walked into our classroom on Monday morning with a tall, dark-haired boy in tow. โ€œWe have a new boy joining the class,โ€ he explained, clapping the tall boy on the shoulder. โ€œThis is Jonathan Kavanagh. He and his family moved down from Dublin this past summer, and I want you all to make your best effort to make him feel welcome.โ€ He squeezed the scowling boyโ€™s shoulder again. โ€œFrom what I hear, we can expect great things from this one on the rugby pitch.โ€ Turning to the boy, he said, โ€œKavanagh, why donโ€™t you take a seat down the back of the class with young Gibson,โ€ before pointing at me.

Still scowling, the boy sauntered through the rows of desks with his head in the air. I knew the lads would think that made him look like a cocky fucker, but I thought it was great.

Dropping his schoolbag on the floor next to mine, he pulled his chair back and sank down, still scowling, still looking like he thought he was too good for the rest of us.

โ€œHowโ€™s it going?โ€ Robbie Mac whispered, turning around from the desk in front of us to introduce himself. โ€œRobbie.โ€

โ€œJohnny,โ€ the boy sitting next to me acknowledged with a polite nod.

โ€œSo, youโ€™re into the rugby, are ya, Johnny?โ€

His lips tipped up in a small smirk. โ€œYou could say that.โ€

โ€œWell, me and some of the other lads from class usually have a game after school on Mondays. You should come.โ€

โ€œWhat about you?โ€

It took me a moment to realize that he was addressing me. โ€œMe?โ€ I asked anyway, just to be sure, because aside from Hugh and Feely, no one else in class bothered a whole pile with me.

โ€œYeah.โ€ Johnny nodded. โ€œDo you play?โ€

I opened my mouth to answer but Robbie got there first. โ€œWho, Gibsie?โ€ He snickered into his hand. โ€œHe canโ€™t play sports. He faints at the sight of blood.โ€ He snickered again. โ€œHeโ€™s the classโ€™s personal Billy Elliot.โ€ More laughing. โ€œHe likes to dance with the girls.โ€

I felt my face grow hot from embarrassment and quickly dropped my gaze to the copybook open in front of me, fully expecting the boy sitting next to me to be a perfect candidate for the dickhead club. The book was littered withย my own scrawling handwriting that I could barely read.

โ€œSo?โ€ Johnny surprised me by saying. โ€œYou think thereโ€™s something wrong with dancing?โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œShit, maybe the sir put you at the right desk when he sat you with him,โ€ Robbie snickered, gesturing to me.

โ€œMaybe he did,โ€ Johnny replied coolly.

โ€œWhatever, girls,โ€ Robbie sneered before turning back to face the front of the class. โ€œEnjoy each otherโ€™s company.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m Johnny.โ€ He held his hand out to me. โ€œJohnny Kavanagh.โ€

โ€œGerard Gibson,โ€ I replied, accepting his handshake. โ€œBut everyone calls me Gibsie.โ€

โ€œSo, Gibsie, is everyone in this class a bleeding eejit like that one?โ€ he asked, pointing to Robbie.

โ€œThereโ€™s a couple of good ones,โ€ I replied, feeling my lips tip up in a smile. โ€œBut yeah, pretty much.โ€

Johnny nodded solemnly. โ€œAnd whoโ€™s your best friend out of all of them?โ€

โ€œMe?โ€ My brows shot up. โ€œWell, Iโ€™m, ah, Iโ€™m good friends with those two over there.โ€ I pointed across the room to where Hugh and Feely were sitting. โ€œBut I wouldnโ€™t say I have a best friend in here.โ€ Smiling, I added, โ€œI have a girl friend. Sheโ€™s at a different school, though.โ€

โ€œIs she your friend or your girlfriend?โ€

โ€œBoth?โ€

โ€œHm.โ€ Johnny seemed to mull that over before asking, โ€œDo you want to be my best friend?โ€ He shrugged. โ€œLooks like Iโ€™m not getting out of this town anytime soon, so I might as well put down some roots.โ€

โ€œMe?โ€

โ€œYeah, you.โ€

โ€œYou want me to be your best friend?โ€

He nodded again, and I could tell from just one interaction with him that he was sharp. This lad was nobodyโ€™s fool. He had clearly taken everyoneโ€™s measure, and for some strange reason, had decided that I was the best of aย bad bunch.

โ€œSo, whatโ€™s it going to be, Gibs?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ I smiled. โ€œIโ€™m in.โ€

โ€œNice one,โ€ he chuckled. โ€œNow, the first thing weโ€™re going to work on is this phobia of blood.โ€ Smirking, he nudged my shoulder with his. โ€œBecause Iโ€™ve a feeling thereโ€™s an unmerciful beast of a flanker inside you just waiting to come out โ€ฆ โ€

โ€œGibs.โ€

โ€œCome on, Gibs, lad, itโ€™s me.โ€

โ€œCome back, Gibs. Come on back to me.โ€

My best friendโ€™s familiar voice filled my ears, and I whipped around to find him standing in the middle of my bedroom with his hands in the air. โ€œJohnny?โ€

โ€œThe one and only.โ€ His tone was soft, coaxing, and laced with approval. โ€œSee? I knew you could hear me, fucker.โ€

Feeling panicked, like I had just been chewed up by one of my night terrors and then spat back out into the real world. โ€œJohnny?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s me, Gibs.โ€ He took a step closer, hands still raised. โ€œIโ€™m right here, lad.โ€

I looked around my room, feeling the familiar swell of hysteria rise up as my eyes took in the carnage. I did that. I knew it had to be me. Everything was trashed. My bed. My furniture. My walls? The curtain? โ€œJesus Christ!โ€

And my mother? I cast a panicked glance in the direction of my mother. She was standing in my bedroom doorway with her head in her hands. Keith was standing behind her, looking as pale as a ghost.

โ€œThatโ€™s it,โ€ Johnny continued to coax but when his voice cracked, I noticed the tears trickling down his cheeks. โ€œJust stay with me, Gibs.โ€

Why was he saying that?

Why was he crying?

Why the fuck wasย Iย crying?

โ€œGerard!โ€ Claireโ€™s voice cut through all of the bullshit and haze, andย I turned just in time to find her being held up by her brother.

โ€œWhat the fuck is happening?โ€ I demanded, feeling panicked, as everyone stared at me. โ€œWhat did I do?โ€

โ€œNothing, Gibs.โ€ Johnny was the one to answer me, taking another step towards me. โ€œI just โ€ฆ โ€ Pausing, he licked his lips and glanced at my hand before he quickly retrained his attention on my face. โ€œCan you hear me?โ€

โ€œOf course I can hear you!โ€ I snapped. โ€œWhy the fuck wouldnโ€™t I hear you?โ€

His attention shifted to my hand again and thatโ€™s when I looked down. โ€œOh Jesus Christ.โ€

Blood.

Thick, red, crimson blood was flowing freely from my hand, dripping steadily onto the carpet. The massive shard of broken mirror I was clutching was no doubt the culprit of my bleeding. โ€œJesus,โ€ I strangled out, immediately tossing the shard away from my body and then heaving when I noticed just how badly drenched in blood my dress shirt was. โ€œI didnโ€™t โ€ฆ I wasnโ€™t โ€ฆ โ€ Shaking my head, I staggered backward, feeling weak from the sight of my hand. โ€œI wouldย neverย hurt any of you.โ€

โ€œEveryone here knows that, lad,โ€ Johnny agreed, closing the space between us. โ€œYouโ€™re a good man. You wouldnโ€™t hurt a fly. So, donโ€™t you worry about that, alright? Because itโ€™s not any of us that weโ€™re worried youโ€™ll hurt, Gibs.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t mean to,โ€ I hurried to appease, roughly batting my tears away, as blood poured from my hand. โ€œI donโ€™t know how Iโ€™m still standing,โ€ I mumbled, somehow managing to not pass out from the sight of it. โ€œI think I might be in a bit of shock or something, Johnny.โ€ I reached up with a trembling hand and tapped my head. โ€œI think I might be gone a bit wrong in here.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry about it โ€ฆ โ€ His voice cracked when he grabbed the back of my neck and pulled me roughly against his chest. โ€œIt happens to the best of us.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m okay, Cap,โ€ I mumbled against his shoulder, as he held me inย his arms. โ€œIโ€™m always okay.โ€

โ€œOh God, Gerard, is it true?โ€ My mam was crying in the distance.

โ€œWhat do you mean is it true?โ€ That was my old friend Hugh. โ€œOf course itโ€™s fucking true, Sadhbh! Look at him.โ€

โ€œGibs!โ€ย Was Feely crying?

โ€œGerard!โ€ย My walking heartbeat.

โ€œCan everyone just clear out for a few minutes,โ€ I heard my best friend command, chasing all the voices away. โ€œGibs and I are having a bit of a moment here, and we donโ€™t need ye bunch of bleeding babies crying around the place, now do we, Gibs?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Numb, I leaned my cheek on his shoulder and let him hold me. โ€œNo crying babies.โ€

โ€œHe needs to have that arm seen to, Johnny, and the Gards are on the way.โ€

โ€œAnd thatโ€™s fine, and he will get it seen to,โ€ Johnny replied in a coaxing tone, as he lowered us both to the floor. โ€œJust give him a minute.โ€

โ€œThey know, donโ€™t they?โ€ I whispered, slumped against him. โ€œEveryone knows.โ€

His arms tightened around me, and he pulled me closer. โ€œYouโ€™re going to be okay.โ€

โ€œAll the things he did to my body.โ€ Feeling lifeless, I stared blankly ahead, the tears trickling down my cheek. โ€œI didnโ€™t want any of it, Johnny.โ€

โ€œI know you didnโ€™t, Gibs โ€ฆ โ€ He choked out a pained cry and continued to rock me back and forth. โ€œI believe you.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want her to know.โ€

โ€œClaire?โ€

I nodded, feeling empty. โ€œShe wonโ€™t be able to love me now.โ€

โ€œShe already loves you,โ€ he strangled out. โ€œWe all love ya.โ€ Sniffling, he pulled me closer and pressed a kiss to the top of my head. โ€œYouโ€™re the best friend Iโ€™ve ever had, and I love the fucking bones of you, ya mad eejit.โ€ He choked out a pained laugh. โ€œAnd if you think this is going to chase me off then youโ€™ve another thing coming, fucker, because Iโ€™mย never leaving you. Do ya hear me? Because youโ€™re my Gibs.โ€

โ€œAnd youโ€™re my Kav.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right.โ€ He was crying hard now, and I think I was, too, but I felt so safe with him that I didnโ€™t fight the noises and words and sounds that poured out of me. Instead, for the first time since my father died, I let it all out.
