โGerard, please,โ Mam tried to coax, but I couldnโt be talked down or consoled in this moment. I was too far gone. Everything I had worked so hard to build back up after he destroyed me had been snuffed out in an instant.
I didnโt know how I got home from the dance. I didnโt know if I was in another nightmare, or if I was even breathing. I couldnโt make sense of a fucking word of anything.
โฆ His hand was on the back of my neck, pinning my face into the mattress. โDaddy,โ I tried to scream, but he couldnโt hear me all the way from heaven. โCome back and take me with you.โ
โJust stay down and take it, you little bastard!โ
โIt hurts,โ I strangled out, body bowing in agony when I felt something impale me from behind, ripping my small body in half.
โThatโs it,โ he grunted as he continued to hurt me, pushing me, deeper, harder, rougher. โIโll make a fucking man out of you, ya little pussy.โ
โStop.โ I was crying. I knew I was. My mouth was open, I could feel tears trickling down my cheeks, but my voice wasnโt coming out. โPlease stop.โ
Numb, I felt the life leave my body, fading quicker every time he rammed his privates into mine, as the pain grew worse, and my mind started to wander away โฆ
Feeling cornered, I came out swinging, ripping and tearing at anything I could get my hands on in the moment, seeing nothing but his face everywhere I turned. โKeith, stop him, please! Heโs going to hurt himself!โ I could hear my mother saying somewhere in theย distance, but her face was gone from my sight. I couldnโt see anything butย him.
โฆ Curled up in a ball on my bed, I watched as he stood over me and zipped up his school trousers. He wore the ones the older boys wore. The boys who went to secondary school.
โYou know the score, baby brother.โ Sitting down on the edge of my bed, he pushed my hair out of my face and reached between my legs. โKeep your mouth shut and Iโll keep going easy on you.โ
Trembling, I didnโt dare answer him or look in his direction. I knew better. I knew what happened when I didnโt behave. When I didnโt give him what he wanted.
โGood boy. Youโre always okay, arenโt ya?โ He stroked my cheek and then stood back up. โIโll see you tomorrow night.โ
I waited until my door was closed before checking myself over and pulling my Power Rangers pajama bottoms into place, shuddering when my hand emerged with the familiar sight of blood โฆ
I knew I had lost touch with reality. I could feel my sanity slipping away at the school. The tiny shred of dignity and pride I had managed to hold onto for the past ten years had finally upped and left me.
โ โฆ Iโm going to marry you when Iโm a big girl,โ she told me, reaching across to press her Barbieโs face to my action figure. โYouโll be my shiny prince in the white garner, and Iโll be the princess.โ When she grinned at me, I felt my lips smile back. Because she didnโt have any front teeth and I thought she looked so silly.
โYouโre really going to marry me?โ
โUh-huh.โ Her brown eyes were big and happy, and she smelled like sunshine. โIโm going to take you to my castle in the north pole, where we can build snowmen all day and Santa flies over our castle every night to give us presents.โ
โDoes your castle have a chimney?โ
โThen how is Santa going to leave us presents?โ
โSantaโs super smart,โ she explained. โHeโll get your daddy to fly down from heaven and use magic to open the door โฆ โ
โWhat happened to him, Keith?โ
โI donโt know, Sadhbh. Maybe he took something at the dance.โ
โCall one of his friends. If he did, then we need to call for an ambulance!โ
โIโll go and get Sinead.โ
โBe fast about it!โ
โ โฆ Why would you say that?โ Leaping off the couch, Caoimhe moved as far away from me as she could get. Like I was dirty. Like I was bad. โAre you telling lies, Gerard Gibson? Because that is the worst, most awful thing you could say about a person.โ
โI donโt know,โ I heard myself reply.
โYou donโt know if youโre telling lies or you donโt know why you said it?โ she demanded, hands on her hips. โIโll give you one more chance to tell the truth.โ Her eyes looked so mad. โThen Iโm telling your family what you said.โ
โI โฆ โ I shook my head, feeling so sad, because I knew what she wanted me to say, and I wanted to please her. She was my favorite babysitter. She told the best bedtime stories, and nobody came in my room when she was here. I didnโt want her to go. โI โฆ โ Frowning, I thought really hard about what to do, trying to find the words that would make her happy and like me again. โI โฆ was โฆ making a joke?โ
โOh, thank God!โ She sighed out this big loud breath and then she came back to me. โYou must never say things like that, Gibs.โ She sat down on the couch beside me. โI know I was your babysitter before I was Markโs girlfriend, but you canโt make up stories about him because youโre jealous โฆ โ
โClaire? Itโs Sadhbh, love. Thereโs something wrong with Gerard. Iย think he might have taken something at the dance. I need you to come home right now. If you know anything about what he might have taken, you need to tell me now.โ
โWhatโs she saying?โ
โWhat, Claire? I can barely hear you, pet. Just calm down and stop screaming, love. Tell me what happened.โ
โSadhbh?โ
โShut up, Keith. Iโm trying to hear the girl. The line is bad and sheโs bawling her eyes out.โ
โSee?โ the blonde in the office encouraged, pressing the palm of my hand against her breast. โThat feels nice, doesnโt it?โ
I nodded slowly.
โHave you touched a woman before?โ
I shook my head.
โDo you like how it feels?โ
I nodded again.
โYouโre so cute.โ Smiling, she reached for my other hand and pushed it into the waistband of her skirt. โYou can practice on me if you want โฆ โ
โGibs.โ
โOh, Johnny, thank God youโre here. Heโs after losing it. I donโt know what to do for him. Heโs after putting his hand through a mirror and everything.โ
โSadhbh, I need you to read this.โ
โWhat is it, Johnny?โ
โJust read it,ย please.โ
โDonโt go near him, Kavanagh. Heโs too out of control.โ
โIโll be grand. Just give me a few minutes with him.โ
โKavanagh, be careful, he doesnโt seem to know who we are.โ
โHe knows who I am, donโt ya, Gibs? Itโs alright, my old buddy. Capโs here.โ
โAlright, class, eyes to the front of the room,โ Mr. OโDonovan ordered whenย he walked into our classroom on Monday morning with a tall, dark-haired boy in tow. โWe have a new boy joining the class,โ he explained, clapping the tall boy on the shoulder. โThis is Jonathan Kavanagh. He and his family moved down from Dublin this past summer, and I want you all to make your best effort to make him feel welcome.โ He squeezed the scowling boyโs shoulder again. โFrom what I hear, we can expect great things from this one on the rugby pitch.โ Turning to the boy, he said, โKavanagh, why donโt you take a seat down the back of the class with young Gibson,โ before pointing at me.
Still scowling, the boy sauntered through the rows of desks with his head in the air. I knew the lads would think that made him look like a cocky fucker, but I thought it was great.
Dropping his schoolbag on the floor next to mine, he pulled his chair back and sank down, still scowling, still looking like he thought he was too good for the rest of us.
โHowโs it going?โ Robbie Mac whispered, turning around from the desk in front of us to introduce himself. โRobbie.โ
โJohnny,โ the boy sitting next to me acknowledged with a polite nod.
โSo, youโre into the rugby, are ya, Johnny?โ
His lips tipped up in a small smirk. โYou could say that.โ
โWell, me and some of the other lads from class usually have a game after school on Mondays. You should come.โ
โWhat about you?โ
It took me a moment to realize that he was addressing me. โMe?โ I asked anyway, just to be sure, because aside from Hugh and Feely, no one else in class bothered a whole pile with me.
โYeah.โ Johnny nodded. โDo you play?โ
I opened my mouth to answer but Robbie got there first. โWho, Gibsie?โ He snickered into his hand. โHe canโt play sports. He faints at the sight of blood.โ He snickered again. โHeโs the classโs personal Billy Elliot.โ More laughing. โHe likes to dance with the girls.โ
I felt my face grow hot from embarrassment and quickly dropped my gaze to the copybook open in front of me, fully expecting the boy sitting next to me to be a perfect candidate for the dickhead club. The book was littered withย my own scrawling handwriting that I could barely read.
โSo?โ Johnny surprised me by saying. โYou think thereโs something wrong with dancing?โ
โYou donโt?โ
โNo.โ
โShit, maybe the sir put you at the right desk when he sat you with him,โ Robbie snickered, gesturing to me.
โMaybe he did,โ Johnny replied coolly.
โWhatever, girls,โ Robbie sneered before turning back to face the front of the class. โEnjoy each otherโs company.โ
โIโm Johnny.โ He held his hand out to me. โJohnny Kavanagh.โ
โGerard Gibson,โ I replied, accepting his handshake. โBut everyone calls me Gibsie.โ
โSo, Gibsie, is everyone in this class a bleeding eejit like that one?โ he asked, pointing to Robbie.
โThereโs a couple of good ones,โ I replied, feeling my lips tip up in a smile. โBut yeah, pretty much.โ
Johnny nodded solemnly. โAnd whoโs your best friend out of all of them?โ
โMe?โ My brows shot up. โWell, Iโm, ah, Iโm good friends with those two over there.โ I pointed across the room to where Hugh and Feely were sitting. โBut I wouldnโt say I have a best friend in here.โ Smiling, I added, โI have a girl friend. Sheโs at a different school, though.โ
โIs she your friend or your girlfriend?โ
โBoth?โ
โHm.โ Johnny seemed to mull that over before asking, โDo you want to be my best friend?โ He shrugged. โLooks like Iโm not getting out of this town anytime soon, so I might as well put down some roots.โ
โMe?โ
โYeah, you.โ
โYou want me to be your best friend?โ
He nodded again, and I could tell from just one interaction with him that he was sharp. This lad was nobodyโs fool. He had clearly taken everyoneโs measure, and for some strange reason, had decided that I was the best of aย bad bunch.
โSo, whatโs it going to be, Gibs?โ
โYeah.โ I smiled. โIโm in.โ
โNice one,โ he chuckled. โNow, the first thing weโre going to work on is this phobia of blood.โ Smirking, he nudged my shoulder with his. โBecause Iโve a feeling thereโs an unmerciful beast of a flanker inside you just waiting to come out โฆ โ
โGibs.โ
โCome on, Gibs, lad, itโs me.โ
โCome back, Gibs. Come on back to me.โ
My best friendโs familiar voice filled my ears, and I whipped around to find him standing in the middle of my bedroom with his hands in the air. โJohnny?โ
โThe one and only.โ His tone was soft, coaxing, and laced with approval. โSee? I knew you could hear me, fucker.โ
Feeling panicked, like I had just been chewed up by one of my night terrors and then spat back out into the real world. โJohnny?โ
โItโs me, Gibs.โ He took a step closer, hands still raised. โIโm right here, lad.โ
I looked around my room, feeling the familiar swell of hysteria rise up as my eyes took in the carnage. I did that. I knew it had to be me. Everything was trashed. My bed. My furniture. My walls? The curtain? โJesus Christ!โ
And my mother? I cast a panicked glance in the direction of my mother. She was standing in my bedroom doorway with her head in her hands. Keith was standing behind her, looking as pale as a ghost.
โThatโs it,โ Johnny continued to coax but when his voice cracked, I noticed the tears trickling down his cheeks. โJust stay with me, Gibs.โ
Why was he saying that?
Why was he crying?
Why the fuck wasย Iย crying?
โGerard!โ Claireโs voice cut through all of the bullshit and haze, andย I turned just in time to find her being held up by her brother.
โWhat the fuck is happening?โ I demanded, feeling panicked, as everyone stared at me. โWhat did I do?โ
โNothing, Gibs.โ Johnny was the one to answer me, taking another step towards me. โI just โฆ โ Pausing, he licked his lips and glanced at my hand before he quickly retrained his attention on my face. โCan you hear me?โ
โOf course I can hear you!โ I snapped. โWhy the fuck wouldnโt I hear you?โ
His attention shifted to my hand again and thatโs when I looked down. โOh Jesus Christ.โ
Blood.
Thick, red, crimson blood was flowing freely from my hand, dripping steadily onto the carpet. The massive shard of broken mirror I was clutching was no doubt the culprit of my bleeding. โJesus,โ I strangled out, immediately tossing the shard away from my body and then heaving when I noticed just how badly drenched in blood my dress shirt was. โI didnโt โฆ I wasnโt โฆ โ Shaking my head, I staggered backward, feeling weak from the sight of my hand. โI wouldย neverย hurt any of you.โ
โEveryone here knows that, lad,โ Johnny agreed, closing the space between us. โYouโre a good man. You wouldnโt hurt a fly. So, donโt you worry about that, alright? Because itโs not any of us that weโre worried youโll hurt, Gibs.โ
โI didnโt mean to,โ I hurried to appease, roughly batting my tears away, as blood poured from my hand. โI donโt know how Iโm still standing,โ I mumbled, somehow managing to not pass out from the sight of it. โI think I might be in a bit of shock or something, Johnny.โ I reached up with a trembling hand and tapped my head. โI think I might be gone a bit wrong in here.โ
โDonโt worry about it โฆ โ His voice cracked when he grabbed the back of my neck and pulled me roughly against his chest. โIt happens to the best of us.โ
โIโm okay, Cap,โ I mumbled against his shoulder, as he held me inย his arms. โIโm always okay.โ
โOh God, Gerard, is it true?โ My mam was crying in the distance.
โWhat do you mean is it true?โ That was my old friend Hugh. โOf course itโs fucking true, Sadhbh! Look at him.โ
โGibs!โย Was Feely crying?
โGerard!โย My walking heartbeat.
โCan everyone just clear out for a few minutes,โ I heard my best friend command, chasing all the voices away. โGibs and I are having a bit of a moment here, and we donโt need ye bunch of bleeding babies crying around the place, now do we, Gibs?โ
โNo.โ Numb, I leaned my cheek on his shoulder and let him hold me. โNo crying babies.โ
โHe needs to have that arm seen to, Johnny, and the Gards are on the way.โ
โAnd thatโs fine, and he will get it seen to,โ Johnny replied in a coaxing tone, as he lowered us both to the floor. โJust give him a minute.โ
โThey know, donโt they?โ I whispered, slumped against him. โEveryone knows.โ
His arms tightened around me, and he pulled me closer. โYouโre going to be okay.โ
โAll the things he did to my body.โ Feeling lifeless, I stared blankly ahead, the tears trickling down my cheek. โI didnโt want any of it, Johnny.โ
โI know you didnโt, Gibs โฆ โ He choked out a pained cry and continued to rock me back and forth. โI believe you.โ
โI donโt want her to know.โ
โClaire?โ
I nodded, feeling empty. โShe wonโt be able to love me now.โ
โShe already loves you,โ he strangled out. โWe all love ya.โ Sniffling, he pulled me closer and pressed a kiss to the top of my head. โYouโre the best friend Iโve ever had, and I love the fucking bones of you, ya mad eejit.โ He choked out a pained laugh. โAnd if you think this is going to chase me off then youโve another thing coming, fucker, because Iโmย never leaving you. Do ya hear me? Because youโre my Gibs.โ
โAnd youโre my Kav.โ
โThatโs right.โ He was crying hard now, and I think I was, too, but I felt so safe with him that I didnโt fight the noises and words and sounds that poured out of me. Instead, for the first time since my father died, I let it all out.
