Chapter no 70

Taming 7 (Boys of Tommen, 5)

โ€œWhat in the name of God was I thinking?โ€ Strewn on top of my bed in my tux, several hours later, I howled like a banshee into the phone, repeating the same question Iโ€™d been asking myself all day. โ€œWhy, God, why do bad things happen to good people?โ€

โ€œBecause sheโ€™s not a good person, Gibs, and your girlfriend was right when she called her a pervert.โ€

I narrowed my eyes and glared at my phone. โ€œNot fucking helping, Cap.โ€

โ€œI told you that you never shouldโ€™ve touched that woman. From day one, I told you, but you wouldnโ€™t listen to me.โ€

โ€œNow youโ€™re really not fucking helping,โ€ I huffed. โ€œIโ€™ve a good mind to hang up on you.โ€

โ€œThat wouldnโ€™t be such a terrible thing, lad, considering I need to take a shower and get ready for this bleeding dance.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you dare hang up on me in my need,โ€ I warned, pointing a finger at the phone, even though he couldnโ€™t see me. โ€œIโ€™m warning ya, Cap. Iโ€™ll cry.โ€

โ€œJesus, fine,โ€ I heard my best friend groan. โ€œYou can stay on the line while I take a shower.โ€

Nodding my approval, I resumed my tale of woe, rehashing the same argument over and over until I ran out of steam.

โ€œDo you want to hear something positive?โ€ I heard Johnny ask over the sound of a shower motor running.

โ€œYes,โ€ I begged. โ€œBadly.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m proud of you.โ€

I balked. โ€œProudย of me?โ€

โ€œYou came clean to her, Gibs,โ€ he called back. โ€œYou got it off yourย chest. That couldnโ€™t have been easy, lad, but you did it.โ€

โ€œJohnny, she almost took leave of her senses,โ€ I deadpanned. โ€œSheย threatenedย to have Dee arrested, sheย forcedย her to resign on the spot, and Iโ€™m not sure if she still wants toย beย with me. I reckon itโ€™s safe to say there is nothing about today that I can be proud of.โ€ Shuddering, I added, โ€œIt was a terrible fucking mistake on my part and one I wonโ€™t ever be making again.โ€

โ€œThen I guess itโ€™s a good thing you only have one skeleton in your closet, lad.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ I clenched my eyes shut and nodded. โ€œLucky me.โ€

โ€œListen to me,โ€ he said when the sound of the motor running abruptly cut out. โ€œI want you to get your tux on, splash some water on your face, walk your ass across the street, and give that girl of yours the yellow bleeding flower youโ€™ve spent the last two weeks trying to hunt down. Shannon and I will be over in the limo in an hour, lad, so you best be ready.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a Midas Touch rose,โ€ I muttered. โ€œAnd what if she doesnโ€™t want to go with me anymore, Johnny?โ€ My heart seized with dread at the thought. โ€œIโ€™ve known Claire my entire life, and I swear Iโ€™ve never seen her so angry.โ€

โ€œIf you donโ€™t shoot, you donโ€™t score, Gibs.โ€

โ€œTrust you to toss out a sportโ€™s analogy when Iโ€™m having an existential crisis.โ€

โ€œJust go get your girl, Gibs,โ€ he instructed before the line went dead.

โ€œEasier said than done, Cap,โ€ I whispered, scrubbing my face with my hand. โ€œFuck.โ€

Tossing my phone on my nightstand, I reached a hand under my mattress to retrieve the familiar folded-up piece of paper, and then, like the masochist I was, I unfolded the page and reread Caoimhe Youngโ€™s suicide note.

The real one.

The one she left just for me.
