โGerard!โ I screamed, watching as he faceplanted the treehouse floor with an audible thud. Seriously, he went down like a sack of spuds. โOmigod, Gerard?โ
Nothing.
Not a peep.
โAre you dead?โ
Silence.
โOmigod, I killed you!โ I wailed, throwing my hands up. โI killed you with my hymen!โ
Wailing like a banshee, I quickly snatched the blood-stained duvet up and threw it out of the treehouse. โI am so sorry, Gerard,โ I cried, as I bolted down the ladder. โIโll get help!โ
Tripping off the last step of the ten-foot ladder, I scooped up the evidence of my crime of passion and ran for my life, screaming the word โHelpโ at the top of my lungs.
โClaire?โ Both of our mothers came barreling out of the house. โWhat in the name of Jesus happened?โ
โMam, I killed him!โ I wailed, running into her arms. โI killed Gerard!โ
โWhat happened?โ Sadhbh demanded, looking frantic with concern. โWhereโs my son, Claire?!โ
โHeโs dead.โ Still wailing like a banshee, I pointed behind me. โIn the treehouse.โ
โHow?โ Mam asked in a much calmer voice than either Sadhbh or I were displaying. โWhat happened?โ
โGerard!โ Breaking into a panicked run, Sadhbh dropped her coffee cup on the lawn and bolted up the ladder of the treehouse. โGerard,ย love, itโs alright. Mammyโs coming!โ
โWhatโs wrong?โ Dad demanded, appearing on the patio. โJesus, I could hear you screaming from the attic.โ
โI killed Gerard with my hymen, Daddy!โ I wailed, throwing the blood-stained duvet at his feet. โHereโs the murder weapon for the Gardaรญ when they come to arrest me!โ
โHeโs alive!โ I heard Sadhbh call out from the treehouse, and I swear, I almost collapsed on the lawn in relief.
โOh, thank God,โ I cried, dropping my head in my hands. โThank you, baby Jesus and the Virgin Mary for watching over us.โ
โPeter?โ Sadhbh called out from the treehouse. โGive me a hand with your godson, would you?โ
โClaire.โ Mam shook her head. โI donโt know whether to cry or kill you right now.โ
โI know!โ I winced. โIโm super sorry, Mam.โ
โOkay, everybody, stand back,โ my father instructed a few minutes later, as he carried my boyfriend down from the treehouse in the firemanโs carry position. โHeโll be alright. Heโs just after getting a fright, thatโs all.โ
