Chapter no 59

Taming 7 (Boys of Tommen, 5)

โ€œWe need to talk,โ€ were the first words that came out of my mouth when I found Hugh slumped on his bed later that morning. Clad in my school uniform, I eyed his matching one strewn across his bedroom floor and frowned. โ€œYouโ€™re not going to school?โ€

A muffled โ€œno,โ€ sounded from beneath the duvet.

โ€œBut we have a match today.โ€

โ€œThe answerโ€™s still no.โ€

โ€œShit, youโ€™re really sick.โ€ My brows shot up. โ€œI thought you were faking it at lunch yesterday.โ€

โ€œWhatever this is, can it wait?โ€ he croaked out, pulling the covers down enough to look at me. โ€œBecause Iโ€™m in a real bad way here, lad.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Closing the door behind me, I walked into his room and sank down on the foot of his bed. โ€œIt canโ€™t.โ€

Hugh drew the covers back over his head and groaned. โ€œFuck my life.โ€

โ€œI asked your sister to be my girlfriend,โ€ I announced, deciding to get it out of the way right away. โ€œI think itโ€™s fairly obvious by now that Iโ€™m in love with her, Hugh.โ€ Clearing my throat, I scratched my jaw before adding, โ€œIโ€™m serious about this, okay? Iโ€™m serious aboutย her.โ€

I had been up all night going over my raging thoughts and what I might say to my oldest friend. Because as much as we liked to fight and banter, this was a delicate situation, and I didnโ€™t want to fuck up our friendship. Hugh Biggs meant an awful lot to me, not as much as his sister clearly meant, but still. I needed him to be okay about this. I needed his approval. I needed him to know that I wasnโ€™t fucking around anymore. That his sister wasnโ€™t a game to me, and I was deadly serious.

I had been expecting violence, predicting it even, but when Hugh didnโ€™t react, I started to feel real concern for whatever affliction he had come down with.

โ€œDid you hear me, Hugh?โ€

โ€œI heard you, Gibs.โ€

Hm. My brows furrowed in confusion. โ€œAnd you donโ€™t want to kill me?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m too fucking broken to kill you, lad.โ€

โ€œJesus.โ€ Reaching for the covers, I pulled them back and studied his face. โ€œDo you need a doctor?โ€

โ€œNo, because itโ€™s my own fault.โ€ Shaking his head, he pressed a hand to his forehead before asking, โ€œWhat did Claire say when you asked her?โ€

โ€œWell, she didnโ€™t immediately reject me so Iโ€™m taking that as a solid win,โ€ I offered with a sigh. โ€œSheโ€™s taking some time to think it over.โ€

โ€œSmart girl.โ€

โ€œVery smart,โ€ I agreed with a nod.

โ€œDonโ€™t break her heart, Gibs.โ€

My own one hammered hard when I heard his quiet request. โ€œI wonโ€™t.โ€

โ€œI mean it.โ€ His brown eyes locked on mine. โ€œIf youโ€™re serious about this, and I really fucking hope you are, then donโ€™t let her down.โ€

โ€œIย amย serious,โ€ I vowed, swallowing deeply. โ€œAnd I wonโ€™t let her down, Hugh.โ€

โ€œGood,โ€ he groaned, rolling onto his side. โ€œBecause Iโ€™m in no condition to kill you at the moment.โ€

โ€œDuly noted.โ€ Chuckling, I stood up and moved for the door. โ€œFeel better soon, lad.โ€

โ€œOmigod!โ€ Claire yelped when I crashed into her in the landing, all blonde curls and flushed cheeks. โ€œWhat are you โ€ฆ โ€

On my best behavior, I smiled warmly before stepping aside for her towel-clad body to scamper back to her bedroom. โ€œAs you were, Claire-Bear.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re up early.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m a man on a mission.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ Cheeks still flushed, she lingered in her bedroom doorway, eyeing me uncertainly. โ€œHey, are you driving to school this morning?โ€ She licked her lips and flicked a wrist in the direction of her brotherโ€™s closed bedroom door. โ€œBecause I donโ€™t know if Hughโ€™s going โ€ฆ โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll be across the road when youโ€™re ready,โ€ I cut in and told her. โ€œIโ€™ll be waiting patiently, Claire-Bear.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ A small smile tipped her lips upwards, letting me know that she had caught on to the hidden meaning behind my words. โ€œI promise not to keep you waiting too long.โ€

When I crossed the street and went into my house, I was already on full alert for potential run-ins with my motherโ€™s asshole stepson. However, finding him in my room was neither something I had anticipated nor dealt with in a very long time.

The minute my eyes landed on Mark Allen sitting on my bed, the tiny hairs on the back of my neck stood to attention.

Immediately, my skin broke out in a clammy, feverish sweat, and if it wasnโ€™t for the fact that I was in his presence, I might have thought that I was coming down with whatever Hugh had.ย But I wasnโ€™t the sick one here.ย โ€œGet out of my room.โ€

โ€œStill as messy as ever, I see.โ€

โ€œI said getย outย of my room.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not the way youโ€™re supposed to greet your brother, Gibs,โ€ he replied in a casual tone, completely unaffected by the tension I was emanating. โ€œDidnโ€™t Sadhbh teach you how to treat people by now?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re one to talk,โ€ I shot back, remaining in the doorway. โ€œYou have a lot of fucking nerve to come in here.โ€

โ€œAnd whyโ€™s that, Gibs?โ€

I narrowed my eyes. โ€œYou know why.โ€

โ€œNope.โ€ Shaking his head, he rose to his feet and stretched. โ€œI have no idea what youโ€™re talking about.โ€

โ€œYes, you do,โ€ I bit out, feeling my entire body rack with tremorsย when I watched him approach me. โ€œYou know what you did.โ€

โ€œAnd what did I do?โ€

โ€œYou know,โ€ was all I could get out, and I fucking hated how small my voice sounded. Like I was seven years old again. Or eight, or nine, or ten, or even eleven. My breath hitched in my throat, and I had to force myself to not cower. โ€œYouย know,โ€ I strangled out, chest heaving. โ€œAnd she did, too.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re mistaken,โ€ he tried to fuck with my mind by saying. โ€œConfusing nightmares with reality, I reckon.โ€

โ€œNo, Iโ€™m not.โ€ I shook my head, feeling all kinds of fucked up and panicky. โ€œIโ€™m not confusing anything because Iย knowย what you did.โ€ Swallowing deeply, I forced myself to choke out the words, โ€œIย remember.โ€

โ€œOh yeah?โ€ Stopping just short of me, he folded his arms across his chest and smirked. โ€œProve it.โ€

Trembling from head to toe, I sidestepped his body and moved for my bed. โ€œActually, I can.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s that, Gibs? The illegible scrawl of a dunce child?โ€ he goaded when I withdrew the crumpled-up letter from under my mattress. โ€œDonโ€™t tell me that an illiterate, dumb cunt like you actually kept a diary?โ€ He laughed again before saying, โ€œJesus Christ, you did. You actually kept a diary like a little girl!โ€ Humor and cruelty filled his features, sending me on a spiral back to a time in my life I didnโ€™t dare revisit. โ€œLooks like, despite my best efforts, I didnโ€™t make a man out of you.โ€

โ€œNo, not me.โ€ With trembling hands, I unfolded the note and held it up between us. โ€œHer.โ€

A wave of recognition flickered in his eyes, and he took a step closer. โ€œIs that Caoimheโ€™s handwriting?โ€

โ€œIt sure fucking is,โ€ I spat, shaking violently. โ€œThink I donโ€™t have proof now?โ€

His eyes flashed with panic before he quickly slapped on a confident bravado. โ€œIf you havenโ€™t shown anyone, and you clearly havenโ€™t, itโ€™s because youย knowย nobody will believe it.โ€ He narrowed his eyes. โ€œNobody will ever believeย yourย truth overย mine.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s only one truth, Mark,โ€ I forced myself to stand my ground and say, while I gestured to the letter in my hand. โ€œAnd itโ€™s written in here.โ€

He watched me watch him for the longest moment before taking a step in my direction, attention flicking to the letter. โ€œDonโ€™t even think about it,โ€ I warned, quickly tucking it away in my pocket. โ€œIโ€™m not seven years old anymore, asshole.โ€

โ€œWhy are you bringing all of this shit up again?โ€ he tried to change the narrative by demanding. โ€œItโ€™s in the past, Gibs. Itโ€™s dead and buried.โ€

โ€œMaybe for you,โ€ I strangled out. โ€œBut Iโ€™m still living it every day.โ€

He rolled his eyes like I was being dramatic. Like my memories and my pain and his action didnโ€™t ruin me on the daily.

โ€œI want you gone,โ€ I heard myself say.

โ€œThatโ€™s not going to happen,โ€ he dismissed me by saying. โ€œI have a job lined up over here, and I just put a deposit down on a house for my family in town.โ€

โ€œI want you out of my house and out of my town,โ€ I doubled down and told him. โ€œToday. This morning. Right fuckingย now.โ€

โ€œOr what?โ€

โ€œOr Iโ€™m going to tell.โ€

โ€œTell?โ€ He tossed the word out like it was something laughable. โ€œChrist, what age are you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m seventeen now,โ€ I bit out. โ€œBut I was seven when you raped me.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œI was seven years old when you first raped me!โ€ I said louder, refusing to be silenced a second longer by my fear of this man. โ€œI was eleven years old when you finally stopped!โ€ Blowing out a ragged breath, I glared at the monster standing in front of me with tears pouring down my cheeks, and strangled out, โ€œYou took four years of my childhood from me, and Iโ€™ve been living in a prison in my mind every damn day of my life since. So, if you donโ€™t want to risk spending the next seventeen years of your life behind bars, youโ€™ll get on a plane and never come back!โ€
