โWe need to talk,โ were the first words that came out of my mouth when I found Hugh slumped on his bed later that morning. Clad in my school uniform, I eyed his matching one strewn across his bedroom floor and frowned. โYouโre not going to school?โ
A muffled โno,โ sounded from beneath the duvet.
โBut we have a match today.โ
โThe answerโs still no.โ
โShit, youโre really sick.โ My brows shot up. โI thought you were faking it at lunch yesterday.โ
โWhatever this is, can it wait?โ he croaked out, pulling the covers down enough to look at me. โBecause Iโm in a real bad way here, lad.โ
โNo.โ Closing the door behind me, I walked into his room and sank down on the foot of his bed. โIt canโt.โ
Hugh drew the covers back over his head and groaned. โFuck my life.โ
โI asked your sister to be my girlfriend,โ I announced, deciding to get it out of the way right away. โI think itโs fairly obvious by now that Iโm in love with her, Hugh.โ Clearing my throat, I scratched my jaw before adding, โIโm serious about this, okay? Iโm serious aboutย her.โ
I had been up all night going over my raging thoughts and what I might say to my oldest friend. Because as much as we liked to fight and banter, this was a delicate situation, and I didnโt want to fuck up our friendship. Hugh Biggs meant an awful lot to me, not as much as his sister clearly meant, but still. I needed him to be okay about this. I needed his approval. I needed him to know that I wasnโt fucking around anymore. That his sister wasnโt a game to me, and I was deadly serious.
I had been expecting violence, predicting it even, but when Hugh didnโt react, I started to feel real concern for whatever affliction he had come down with.
โDid you hear me, Hugh?โ
โI heard you, Gibs.โ
Hm. My brows furrowed in confusion. โAnd you donโt want to kill me?โ
โIโm too fucking broken to kill you, lad.โ
โJesus.โ Reaching for the covers, I pulled them back and studied his face. โDo you need a doctor?โ
โNo, because itโs my own fault.โ Shaking his head, he pressed a hand to his forehead before asking, โWhat did Claire say when you asked her?โ
โWell, she didnโt immediately reject me so Iโm taking that as a solid win,โ I offered with a sigh. โSheโs taking some time to think it over.โ
โSmart girl.โ
โVery smart,โ I agreed with a nod.
โDonโt break her heart, Gibs.โ
My own one hammered hard when I heard his quiet request. โI wonโt.โ
โI mean it.โ His brown eyes locked on mine. โIf youโre serious about this, and I really fucking hope you are, then donโt let her down.โ
โIย amย serious,โ I vowed, swallowing deeply. โAnd I wonโt let her down, Hugh.โ
โGood,โ he groaned, rolling onto his side. โBecause Iโm in no condition to kill you at the moment.โ
โDuly noted.โ Chuckling, I stood up and moved for the door. โFeel better soon, lad.โ
โOmigod!โ Claire yelped when I crashed into her in the landing, all blonde curls and flushed cheeks. โWhat are you โฆ โ
On my best behavior, I smiled warmly before stepping aside for her towel-clad body to scamper back to her bedroom. โAs you were, Claire-Bear.โ
โYouโre up early.โ
โIโm a man on a mission.โ
โOh.โ Cheeks still flushed, she lingered in her bedroom doorway, eyeing me uncertainly. โHey, are you driving to school this morning?โ She licked her lips and flicked a wrist in the direction of her brotherโs closed bedroom door. โBecause I donโt know if Hughโs going โฆ โ
โIโll be across the road when youโre ready,โ I cut in and told her. โIโll be waiting patiently, Claire-Bear.โ
โOkay.โ A small smile tipped her lips upwards, letting me know that she had caught on to the hidden meaning behind my words. โI promise not to keep you waiting too long.โ
When I crossed the street and went into my house, I was already on full alert for potential run-ins with my motherโs asshole stepson. However, finding him in my room was neither something I had anticipated nor dealt with in a very long time.
The minute my eyes landed on Mark Allen sitting on my bed, the tiny hairs on the back of my neck stood to attention.
Immediately, my skin broke out in a clammy, feverish sweat, and if it wasnโt for the fact that I was in his presence, I might have thought that I was coming down with whatever Hugh had.ย But I wasnโt the sick one here.ย โGet out of my room.โ
โStill as messy as ever, I see.โ
โI said getย outย of my room.โ
โThatโs not the way youโre supposed to greet your brother, Gibs,โ he replied in a casual tone, completely unaffected by the tension I was emanating. โDidnโt Sadhbh teach you how to treat people by now?โ
โYouโre one to talk,โ I shot back, remaining in the doorway. โYou have a lot of fucking nerve to come in here.โ
โAnd whyโs that, Gibs?โ
I narrowed my eyes. โYou know why.โ
โNope.โ Shaking his head, he rose to his feet and stretched. โI have no idea what youโre talking about.โ
โYes, you do,โ I bit out, feeling my entire body rack with tremorsย when I watched him approach me. โYou know what you did.โ
โAnd what did I do?โ
โYou know,โ was all I could get out, and I fucking hated how small my voice sounded. Like I was seven years old again. Or eight, or nine, or ten, or even eleven. My breath hitched in my throat, and I had to force myself to not cower. โYouย know,โ I strangled out, chest heaving. โAnd she did, too.โ
โYouโre mistaken,โ he tried to fuck with my mind by saying. โConfusing nightmares with reality, I reckon.โ
โNo, Iโm not.โ I shook my head, feeling all kinds of fucked up and panicky. โIโm not confusing anything because Iย knowย what you did.โ Swallowing deeply, I forced myself to choke out the words, โIย remember.โ
โOh yeah?โ Stopping just short of me, he folded his arms across his chest and smirked. โProve it.โ
Trembling from head to toe, I sidestepped his body and moved for my bed. โActually, I can.โ
โWhatโs that, Gibs? The illegible scrawl of a dunce child?โ he goaded when I withdrew the crumpled-up letter from under my mattress. โDonโt tell me that an illiterate, dumb cunt like you actually kept a diary?โ He laughed again before saying, โJesus Christ, you did. You actually kept a diary like a little girl!โ Humor and cruelty filled his features, sending me on a spiral back to a time in my life I didnโt dare revisit. โLooks like, despite my best efforts, I didnโt make a man out of you.โ
โNo, not me.โ With trembling hands, I unfolded the note and held it up between us. โHer.โ
A wave of recognition flickered in his eyes, and he took a step closer. โIs that Caoimheโs handwriting?โ
โIt sure fucking is,โ I spat, shaking violently. โThink I donโt have proof now?โ
His eyes flashed with panic before he quickly slapped on a confident bravado. โIf you havenโt shown anyone, and you clearly havenโt, itโs because youย knowย nobody will believe it.โ He narrowed his eyes. โNobody will ever believeย yourย truth overย mine.โ
โThereโs only one truth, Mark,โ I forced myself to stand my ground and say, while I gestured to the letter in my hand. โAnd itโs written in here.โ
He watched me watch him for the longest moment before taking a step in my direction, attention flicking to the letter. โDonโt even think about it,โ I warned, quickly tucking it away in my pocket. โIโm not seven years old anymore, asshole.โ
โWhy are you bringing all of this shit up again?โ he tried to change the narrative by demanding. โItโs in the past, Gibs. Itโs dead and buried.โ
โMaybe for you,โ I strangled out. โBut Iโm still living it every day.โ
He rolled his eyes like I was being dramatic. Like my memories and my pain and his action didnโt ruin me on the daily.
โI want you gone,โ I heard myself say.
โThatโs not going to happen,โ he dismissed me by saying. โI have a job lined up over here, and I just put a deposit down on a house for my family in town.โ
โI want you out of my house and out of my town,โ I doubled down and told him. โToday. This morning. Right fuckingย now.โ
โOr what?โ
โOr Iโm going to tell.โ
โTell?โ He tossed the word out like it was something laughable. โChrist, what age are you?โ
โIโm seventeen now,โ I bit out. โBut I was seven when you raped me.โ
โDonโtโโ
โI was seven years old when you first raped me!โ I said louder, refusing to be silenced a second longer by my fear of this man. โI was eleven years old when you finally stopped!โ Blowing out a ragged breath, I glared at the monster standing in front of me with tears pouring down my cheeks, and strangled out, โYou took four years of my childhood from me, and Iโve been living in a prison in my mind every damn day of my life since. So, if you donโt want to risk spending the next seventeen years of your life behind bars, youโll get on a plane and never come back!โ
