โStop it, Cherub.โ Crying hard into my pillow, I tried to ignore the paw that was prodding and swiping at my hair. โPlease, Iโm trying to wallow in peace here.โ Nope. She was relentless in her pursuit of my curls. โYour squeaky mouse is on the floor.โ I hiccupped out a sob. โGo play with that instead of my hair.โ
Cherub didnโt go play with her squeaky mouse, but she did jump off my bed when my bedroom door flew inwards. โI need to tell you something,โ Gerard declared in a nervous tone, as he strode into my room with an envelope in his hand. โActually, I need to show you something โฆ โ
โDonโt bother,โ I choked out, planting my face back in my pillow. โI already heardย andย saw.โ
โWhat?โ
I couldnโt take it.
I honestly couldnโt.
A sob tore from my throat.
โClaire?โ
Followed by another and then another.
โJesus, are youย crying?โ
My heart shattered into a million pieces all over again when he sat down on my bed and brushed my hair off my face.
โBaby, whatโs wrong?โ
โHow could you, Gerard!โ I strangled out, crying so hard that my chest heaved violently. โHow c-could y-you?โ
โI would answer you if I knew what the question was,โ he replied, tone laced with panic. โWhat happened?โ
โYou happened, Gerard.โ Giving him my back, I rolled onto my side and clutched my pillow to my chest. โYou ha-happened.โ
โOkay, you need to talk to me,โ he half-demanded, half-coaxed, as he rubbed my arm affectionately. โBecause I have no idea whatโs happening here, sweetheart.โ
Feeling bereft and lifeless, I somehow found the strength to reach under my pillows and retrieve my phone. โCheck my message from Helen.โ
Taking my phone, he quickly unlocked it and set to work on the task I had given him. I knew the moment he saw the picture because I felt his body tense up beside me.
โPlease d-donโt say itโs n-not what it l-looks like,โ I strangled out, through heaving sobs. โBecause sheโs sitting on your l-lap and has her h-hand on your w-willy. You had the n-nerve to crawl into m-my bed afterwards.โ
โClaire, itโs not what it looks like.โ His voice was laced with a pained kind of urgency. โI swear itโs not.โ
โI told you n-not to s-ay it.โ
โI canโt not say it, Claire, because itโs the truth,โ he tried to argue. โI swear to Christ, okay?โ Pulling myself into a sitting position, I watched as he paced my room. โYou have to believe me.โ
โI donโt believe you!โ I cried out hoarsely.
Gerard reared back like my words had physically struck him. โYou have to believe me,โ he choked out. โYou, Claire.ย Youย have to believe me.โ
I choked out another pained sob and covered my face with my hands.
โNo, no, no, donโt do this.โ Closing the space between us, he knelt on the floor next to my bed and took my hands in his. โI didnโt do it, Claire, okay?โ Reaching up with one hand, he wiped at my tears, but they kept on coming. โI didnโt touch her.โ
โI want to b-believe you.โ
โThen believe me,โ he begged, wiping more of my tears away. โBecause I would never do that to you.โ
โYou s-swear?โ Desperately trying to get a handle on my breathing, I pressed a hand to my chest and tried to calm the hysteria rising up inside of me. โYou p-promise youโve n-never been with h-her?โ
Nodding eagerly, he opened his mouth to speak but then hesitated. โI can promise you that I wasnโt with her that night,โ he finally said.
My heart shattered once more. โWho is s-she?โ
He hung his head but didnโt respond.
โWho is s-she, Gerard?โ I sniffled. โCatwoman! Who is s-she?โ
Silence.
โI didnโt cheat on you.โ
โWho is s-she?โ
โClaire, it meant nothing, I promise.โ
โWho is s-she, Gerard!โ
โI canโt tell you.โ
โWhy not?โ
โBecause I just canโt, okay?โ
โShe obviously m-means something to y-you if youโre refusing to t-tell me her n-name.โ
โShe meansย nothingย to me, okay, Claire? Okay? Not a damn thing. Youโre the only girl whoโs ever meant anything to me.โ
โThen why would you d-do it?โ I begged. โWhy would you b-be with other g-girls?โ
โI havenโt.โ
โYou h-have in the p-past.โ
โI donโt know.โ He released a pained groan and dropped his head. โI donโt know what the fuck is wrong with me.โ
โThis c-canโt go on.โ
โWhat canโt?โ
โUs.โ
โUs?โ His eyes were wild with panic. โWhat do mean we canโt go on?โ
โI canโt d-do this anymore.โ
โClaire, stop. Please. I wonโt look at her again. I swear.โ He closed the space between us and tried to pull me in for a hug. I resisted because I knew if I didnโt it would be the end of me. I was losing myself in this boy deeper by the day and if I didnโt push the brakes now that there were huge red flags blowing around, then I was screwed. Because loveย was dangerous. It was wild. It was reckless with the human heart, and I was determined to protect myself from it. โPlease donโt do this. Youโre my best friend. I need you.โ
โIโm not being your fallback anymore.โ
โYou haveย neverย been my fallback anything.โ
โYeah, I have, and Iโm done with it!โ
โClaire.โ
โJust go, Gerard!โ
โIโm so sad.โ
โDonโt be. You had a narrow escape.โ
โLiz!โ
โWhat? Itโs true. She did.โ
โItโll be okay, Claire,โ Shannon coaxed, smoothing a hand over my curls when they came over later that evening to cheer me up. Well, Shannon came over to cheer me up. Lizzie came over to give me the I told you so lecture. โYou two will figure it out.โ
โThey better not,โ Lizzie growled, leaning back on my desk chair. โHeโs a dog.โ
โLiz!โ
โWhat?โ She shrugged, unapologetically. โItโs true.โ
โHey, howโs Hugh doing?โ Shannon asked then. โIs he feeling better?โ
โHeโs been locked away in his room all day.โ
โDid he say whatโs wrong?โ Lizzie asked.
โNope,โ I replied. โHeโs really out of it, though, so it must be pretty serious. I think Mamโs making an appointment for him at the doctor for later in the week, which is abnormal when you have a mother whoโs a nurse. If Mam canโt fix him, itโs scary.โ
โHeโll be fine,โ Shannon hurried to soothe, setting her hand down on my forearm. โIt might be mumps or something random like that.โ
โOh crap, for his sake, I hope not,โ I sniffled.
โWhy?โ
โBecause the mumps can make men infertile.โ
โWhat?โ Lizzie pulled herself up on her elbows and gaped at me. โWhere in the name of God did you hear that?โ
โFrom my mam,โ I explained, blowing my nose. โSo gross.โ
โHe sat next to Johnny at lunch today,โ Shannon said, worrying her lip. โDo you think โฆ โ
โAw,โ I half-laughed, half-wailed. โArenโt you cute worrying about your boyfriendโs reproductive organs.โ
โJohnnyโs grand,โ Lizzie cut her off with a sigh. โBecause Hugh doesnโt have the mumps.โ
โHe might.โ
โHe doesnโt.โ
โYou canโt know that.โ
โHey, maybe my brother needs to sit next to your brother, Shan,โ I sniffled, blowing my nose again. โHe needs neutering like Brian.โ
โThatโs the spirit,โ Lizzie praised. โStiffen that upper lip, Baby Biggs.โ
