โMe?โ
โYes!โ
โYouโre afraid ofย me?โ
โYes!โ
โWhy?โ
โBecause I fucking love you, Claire!โ
โI love you, too.โ
โI know,โ he agreed. โThatโs what makes it even worse!โ
โBut that doesnโt make any sense,โ I cried out hoarsely. Reeling from his admission, I stood in the rain, staring up at the only boy Iโd ever loved, and screamed, โNone of what youโre saying makes any sense to me, Gerard!โ
I didnโt want to be in love with him, and I was. It sucked. Big time. I wanted requited love. The proper kind. Like Shannon had with Johnny. And Aoife with Joey. Well, minus the drugs and the teen pregnancy. I just wanted a real relationship.
Withย him.
He marked me in childhood and that mark had only scored deeper on my heart as the years went by. I knew him, though. He lingered on my heart. I couldnโt seem to get past him.
Apparently, that was too much to ask for because the boy I wanted was broken in the head. He didnโt have the same feelings I had. He didnโt work the same way I did.
โWhen has anything about my thought process ever made sense, Claire?โ Gerard shouted back. โI know Iโm fucking all of this up.โ He pushed a hand through his drenched hair and shrugged helplessly. โIโm not trying to purposefully upset you. I swear to Christ, Iโm not, butย thatโs what happens.โ He threw his hands up in defeat. โThatโs what I seem to do, Claire.โ
โThen you need to stop.โ
โIโmย trying,โ he bit out through gritted teeth. โThatโs what Iโm trying to do, Claire. Iโm trying to talk this out with you!โ
โI donโt need any more words, Gerard,โ I clapped back. โI donโt need you to put any more words into the atmosphere that you donโt mean.โ
โThat I donโt mean?โ he demanded. โWhat have Iย everย not meant?โ
โHow about all of those lies youโve fed me for the past sixteen years about loving me and wanting us to be together,โ I strangled out. โOnly to turn right around and do the opposite every chance you get!โ
โIย doย love you, Claire. Iย doย want to be with you. Iโveย alwaysย wanted to be with you. I justโโ he stopped short and blew out a frustrated breath, hands moving to his hips. โIf you just let me explain โฆ โ
โIย am, Gerard,โ I urged, voice high-pitched and torn. โIย amย letting you explain. I have given you all the time in the world to explain. To figure it the hell out. Sixteen years, to be precise. But you canโt come up with a good enough excuse off the top of your head quick enough, now, can you?โ I shook my head. โInstead, you say all the right words and then you turn around and do the complete opposite.โ Teeth chattering from the cold, I stamped my foot in frustration. Big mistake. My shoe landed in a pothole, causing brown, muddy water to splash all over my tights. Again. Furious, I balled my hands into fists and screamed. โAnd now Iโm muddy again!โ I glared at him, heart racing at a thousand miles an hour. โAnd these shoes areย new!โ
โItโs not about me finding excuses to not be with you, Claire,โ he roared. โItโs about me knowing that youโre the perfect person for me.โ Clearly furious, he slapped the heel of his hand against his forehand and hissed, โAll the while knowing that Iโm not!โ
โWhat?โ I shook my head. โThat makes no sense, Gerard.โ
โYeah, it does.โ Nodding eagerly, he ignored the raindrops that were trickling down his face. โI know youโre better off without me, Claire. Okay? Iย knowย that.โ Releasing a shaky breath, he held his hands up andย shrugged helplessly. โBut I also know Iโm not better off without you.โ He raised his hands in a helpless motion. โNot better off one bit.โ
โOh my God,โ I cried out, beyond confused. โI never know where I stand with you.โ
โIn front,โ came his quick response. โOn top. Number one. Fucking always, Claire.โ
โI have been waiting all my life for you to make a move. For you to grow a pair and just tell me how you feel.โ
โYou know how I feel.โ
โStop it, Gerard!โ I snapped. โStop playing with my heart. I canโt take it. Donโt say it if you donโt mean it, because breaking my heart by accident is one thing but doing it on purpose is another thing entirely and I donโt think I could come back from it.โ
โWhoโs playing?โ he demanded. โI fucking love you, Claire Biggs.โ
โHow can you say that?โ
โBecause itโs the truth!โ Gerard roared, turning a dark shade of purple as his outrage clearly grew. โI didnโt choose any of this, okay? I was born and there you were, and I had these feelings. And they grew, Claire,โ he roared, stalked towards me. โHoly shit, did they grow!โ Looking more furious than Iโd seen him in years, he hooked an arm around my waist and pulled me roughly against him. โLike neon fucking lit-up boomerang feelings that keep coming back no matter how hard I push them away!โ
โOh yeah?โ My heart decided to accelerate to the point where I felt like I was having physical chest pains. โWell, you canโt just โฆ โ My breath was puffy, and my voice was torn. โYou canโt just โฆ โ Pained, I pressed the heel of my hand to my chest bone, while using my other hand to clutch my temple. โOh God โฆ โ
โWhat?โ he demanded. โWhatโs happening to you?โ
โIโm having a moment.โ
โYou are?โ Panic, anger, and confusion all filled his tone. โHoly shit, from what?โ
โFromย you, Gerard,โ I groaned, fisting his drenched school shirtย in my hand. โFrom you, because you just hit me with the feels train, okay?โ
โThe feels train?โ
โYes, the feels train, you big dick!โ
โWell, choo-choo,โ he snapped back, tone laced with sarcasm as he pretended to yank on a horn. โHop a-fucking-board, sweetheart. Itโs about time you decided to join me. Considering Iโve been on the same damn feels train for yearsโโ
โShut up.โ
โYou shut up!โ
โShut up, Gerard!โ
โNo, I wonโt shut up because youโre not the onlyโโ
โI said shut up!โ I screamed, clamping a hand over his mouth, eyes locked on his as the rain hammered down on us. โShut up, Gerard Gibson. Just shut the hell up already!โ
One moment we were glaring, and screaming, and shoving at each other and the next we wereย kissing.
Somehow, and only God himself knew how it happened, my hand on Gerardโs mouth had been replaced with my lips.
Desperately. Voraciously. Adoringly. Our lips collided in a frenzied hunger that had been building up for sixteen years and had finally bubbled over.
Kissing him felt like I had suddenly remembered the answer to a question that had been tormenting me for hours. You know the feeling of frustration when something is on the tip of your tongue forever and you finally figure it out and relief floors you? Well, thatโs how I was feeling in this moment.
And it wasnโt just me doing the kissing, either. Gerard didnโt hesitate to reciprocate my kiss. Not for one millisecond. No, he was kissing me back, and I meanย reallyย kissing me back. With just as much flair and need and desperation.
Fisting my hair in one hand, he reciprocated every reckless thrust of my tongue with an experienced thrust of his own, while he pulled meย roughly against him with his other hand, fingertips digging into the fleshy part of my hip.
Trembling violently, I clung to his shoulders, feeling my body grow weak. Seriously, my legs were shaking so violently, I could hardly keep upright.
Oh God.
Ohย God.
It was the strangest, most perfect, most real andย rightย feeling ever. I never wanted anything more in my life than this boy and all he could give me. He was too much and not enough all at once.
This kiss?
His lips on my lips?
His hands on my body?
His tongue in my mouth?
It meantย everythingย to me.
I wanted to laugh.
I wanted to cry.
I wanted to โฆ oh, God, I felt so much in this moment, so much for this boy, that I wasnโt sure what I wanted. I was floored by relief and flooded by feelings all in one breath. I only knew that I didnโt ever want him to stop.
But then he did.
Tearing his lips away from mine, Gerard pushed his hair off his forehead, breathless and panting. โFuck.โ
โNo.โ Feeling panicked that he was going to slam on the brakes again, I fisted his shirt and pulled him back to me. โDonโt stop.โ
โI donโt want to,โ he replied in a gruff tone, hands moving to rest on my hip. โTrust me. But youโre going to get sick out here.โ
โI donโt care,โ I croaked out, feeling like I would die right here on this mortal spot if he didnโt kiss me again.
His gray eyes blazed with heat when he said, โYeah, well, I do.โ
