Chapter no 48

Taming 7 (Boys of Tommen, 5)

โ€œClaire, come on, will you?โ€ At a snailโ€™s pace, I continued to drive along beside her with my hazard lights on and car window rolled down. โ€œJust get in the car, please.โ€ Ignoring the honking horns from the countless pissed off road users tailing me, I concentrated on the furious blonde stomping down the side of the road instead. โ€œYouโ€™re going to get washed away.โ€ That was a very real concern of mine. It was raining so hard that even with my windscreen wipers switched to full speed, I was having a hard time seeing the road ahead of me. โ€œYouโ€™re not even wearing a coat, you wally!โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t call me a wally, you big tool,โ€ she called back, upping her pace only to step in a huge puddle and splash herself in brown mud. โ€œUgh. Perfect! Just perfect!โ€

Jesus, what a mess, and I wasnโ€™t talking about her clothes.

โ€œClaire,โ€ I coaxed, trying another approach, as I leaned an arm out the window and tried to reason with her. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, okay? Just get in the car and you can kill me while you dry off in the warm!โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ she demanded, stopping dead in her tracks. She folded her arms across her chest and glared. โ€œWhyย are you sorry, Gerard?โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ I shook my head in confusion. โ€œBecause I pissed you off enough that you climbed out of the car on the main road?โ€

โ€œUgh!โ€ She stamped her foot in frustration and continued walking. โ€œTool!โ€

โ€œWell, didnโ€™t I?โ€ I called out, rolling along beside her once more. โ€œI mean, youโ€™re obviously mad at me if youโ€™re to walk the full three miles to Capโ€™s house.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not mad, Gerard,โ€ she called over her shoulder. โ€œIโ€™mย furious!โ€

Spying the entrance to Ballylaggin Woods up ahead, I switchedย on my indicator and drove fifty yards or so up ahead and pulled into the gap.

Killing the engine, I threw the door open and climbed out. โ€œAre you happy?โ€ I snapped, throwing my hands up, as I walked back to her. โ€œBecause weโ€™re both getting soaked now.โ€

โ€œOh my God, just go away!โ€ Claire shouted. โ€œI donโ€™t want to see you right now.โ€

โ€œWell, thatโ€™s too fucking bad because Iโ€™m not leaving you on the side of the road,ย sweetheart!โ€ I snapped back, pushing my already drenched hair out of my eyes. โ€œAnyone could take you!โ€

โ€œTake me?โ€ She threw her head back and laughed humorlessly. โ€œLike who? Old Dinny Byrne fromย Glenroeย on his tractor?โ€ She rolled her eyes. โ€œGet real, Gerard.โ€

โ€œIย amย being real,โ€ I shouted back. โ€œYouโ€™re the one acting like a lunatic here. And donโ€™t take the piss out ofย Glenroeย when weย bothย loved that show,โ€ I accused. โ€œSo, why donโ€™t you do us both a favor and climb in the car before we both get double goddamn pneumonia!โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œNo?โ€ I gaped at her. โ€œWhy the hell not?โ€

โ€œBecause you suck, Gerard Gibson!โ€

โ€œI suck because I want to keep you safe?โ€ I flailed my arms around in exasperation. โ€œOh yeah, Iโ€™m a right horrible bastard.โ€

โ€œYou know what?โ€ Narrowing her eyes, Claire stalked over to the gate I was parked in front of and climbed over it. โ€œGo screw yourself, Gerard.โ€

โ€œOh, so youโ€™re just going to take a gander through the woods now, are you?โ€ I demanded, stalking after her. โ€œIs that your genius plan, Claire-Bear?โ€ I demanded, jumping the gate with ease. โ€œBecause itโ€™s a really shitty one.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t care!โ€ she screamed back, doubling her efforts to outwalk me. โ€œNow stop following me!โ€

โ€œI told you that Iโ€™m not leaving you alone to be kidnapped,โ€ I growled, absolutely following her. โ€œYou little demon!โ€

โ€œBeing kidnapped is sounding awfully tempting right now,โ€ she spat. โ€œAt least it would save me from being anywhere near you, you big bull.โ€

โ€œOh, so Iโ€™m a bull now?โ€

โ€œYep!โ€

โ€œHowโ€™d you figure that one?โ€

โ€œUh, maybe because you look like one. Except that you have piercings in your nipples instead of your nose!โ€

โ€œAre you saying that my tits resemble those of a bull?โ€

โ€œIf theย mooย fits, Gerard!โ€

โ€œTake it back.โ€

โ€œNo!โ€

โ€œThat was a very fucking hurtful statement to make.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€

โ€œTake it back.โ€

โ€œI said no!โ€

โ€œTake it back, Claire, or Iโ€™ll be forced to say something myself.โ€

โ€œLike what?โ€

โ€œLike how the webbed baby toe on your left foot isnโ€™t cute,โ€ I called out. โ€œI lied. Itโ€™s weird as fuck!โ€

โ€œOh, you are such an asshole,โ€ she screamed, throwing her hands up. โ€œNow Iโ€™m glad I said it. And you know what else, Gerard Gibson? Your jokes arenโ€™t even funny half the time. Thatโ€™s right. You have shit craic.โ€

โ€œHow dare you!โ€ I staggered back, feeling like she had physically struck me. โ€œMy craic isย ninety.โ€

โ€œYour craic is mediocre,โ€ Claire called over her shoulder, storming through the tree line. โ€œNow go away!โ€

โ€œJesus Christ,โ€ I growled, pressing my fingers to my temples. I shook my head, at a complete fucking loss with this girl. โ€œCan you stop walking away from me for two goddamn minutes and just talk to me calmly so we can figure this out?!โ€

โ€œNo, because itโ€™s always words with you!โ€ she screamed, pushing her rain-drenched hair back from her face. โ€œItโ€™s always words and smiles and conversations, and Iโ€™m over it, Gerard!โ€ She threw her hands up in theย air โ€“ dramatic as always โ€“ as the heavens continued to pelt down on us. โ€œOh my God. Whatโ€™s the point in even arguing with you?โ€ She shook her head and screamed, โ€œYouโ€™re never going to get it!โ€

โ€œGet it?โ€

โ€œUs, Gerard!โ€ she screamed. โ€œYou donโ€™t get us!โ€

โ€œUs?โ€ Now I was the furious one. โ€œYou think I donโ€™t get us?โ€ I demanded, upping my pace, and closing the space between us. โ€œOh, I get us, Claire,โ€ I snapped, bristling with temper. โ€œIโ€™ve been getting us for a lot fucking longer than you!โ€ Catching up with her, I grabbed her hand and pulled her back to face me. โ€œStop running away from me, dammit.โ€

โ€œThen why donโ€™t you do something about it?โ€ she challenged, tears mixing with raindrops. โ€œHuh?โ€ She ripped her hand free and stormed off, only to turn back around and stalk back to me. โ€œDammit, Gerard, why wonโ€™t you just show me how you feel?โ€

โ€œI do!โ€

โ€œNo, you donโ€™t,โ€ she choked out, shoving me again. โ€œYou tell me.โ€ Tears dripped onto her cheeks as she cried. โ€œYouโ€™re always telling me, Gerard, when Iโ€™m standing here begging you toย showย me.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t!โ€

โ€œWhy not?โ€

โ€œBecause itโ€™s not that easy for me.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause Iโ€™m afraid!โ€

โ€œOf what?โ€ she demanded, pushing at my chest. โ€œHuh?โ€ She pushed me again. โ€œWhat are you afraid of?โ€

โ€œYou, Claire,โ€ I roared back at her, chest heaving. โ€œIโ€™m afraid ofย you!โ€
