Chapter no 44

Taming 7 (Boys of Tommen, 5)

I was quiet the entire drive to the cinema, while I listened to Jamie harp on about random hooligan attacks on parked cars at Tommen. Apparently, Jamie had been the victim of one such attack, and because of this, had resorted to driving his motherโ€™s Fiesta, while the engine of his own car was being worked on at Tonyโ€™s Garage downtown.

I smiled politely and responded at all the right cues, but I would be a liar if I said I felt comfortable. In truth, I felt anything but. Seeing Gerard in my kitchen before we left for our date had thrown a spanner into the midst of an already very bad idea. The look of betrayal in his gray eyes was undeniable and I felt like such a damn fraud.

You are not a fraud.

You are doing the right thing.

Finally. After sixteen years of hanging on a limb, waiting for a boy who was never going to step forward for me, I was doing the right thing for myself and moving on.

If itโ€™s so right, then why does it feel so wrong?

When we took our seats at the back of the cinema, I felt more than a little uncertain. I wasnโ€™t used to sharing a coupleโ€™s seat with anyone other than Gerard.

Usually, we brought a blanket and everything and made ourselves comfortable. Iโ€™d spent some of my favorite Saturday afternoons right here in screen two with the boy across the street, watching matinee movies that ranged from cartoons when we were younger to romance, thrillers, and even gory horror.

In a weird way, I felt like I was cheating on him somehow by being here with another boy. A boy that wasnโ€™t him. It was a ridiculous way to feel, considering heโ€™d been with lots of girls. But I couldnโ€™t helpย how I felt. I couldnโ€™t seem to trick my heart into believing this was a good idea, even my brain was strongly encouraging me to be here with Jamie.

An anxious feeling tugged at my belly, but I pushed it down, needing toย notย let my heart talk me out of what my head knew was best.

Jamie had nice hair. It was dark and spiked and had the perfect amount of gel pushed through it. And he smelled really nice. I was a dinger for scents, and I could pick out his Hugo Boss cologne a mile off.

It was nice.

This wasย nice.

When he shifted in his seat during the movie and casually draped an arm over my shoulder, I felt a pang of panic gnaw at my gut, before swiftly shutting that down with a mental verbal warning.ย This is fine. This is what you wanted. Youโ€™re not doing anything wrong here, Claire. Just go with it.

โ€œAre you okay?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ Nodding, I smiled brightly up at him, trying to send the warmest, kindest vibes I could muster out into the atmosphere.ย This is good. Itโ€™s all good, and youโ€™re on the right path.ย โ€œYou?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m really glad you decided to do this with me.โ€ His arm tightened around my shoulder.

My heart fluttered uncertainly, and it almost felt like it was trying to break its way out of my chest and fly back home toย him. โ€œYeah.โ€ I smiled. โ€œMe, too.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ Still smiling, he leaned in closer. โ€œI think youโ€™re very beautiful.โ€

Oh God.

Oh no.

Run, Claire, run!

โ€œIโ€™m hungry,โ€ I blurted out, turning my face away just in the nick of time. Jamieโ€™s lips grazed my cheek, and I quickly stuffed a handful of popcorn into my mouth. โ€œMmm! Tastes so โ€ฆ good.โ€

*

Please donโ€™t say it.

Please donโ€™t say it.

Please God donโ€™t let him say it.

โ€œSo, we should do this again sometime,โ€ Jamie said when he pulled up outside my house after the cinema, and the clichรฉd phrase made me internally gag.ย How predictable.

โ€œIt was a good night,โ€ I replied politely, while not giving him an answer. โ€œI had a nice time.โ€ Quickly unfastening my seatbelt, I reached for the door handle and pushed the door open. โ€œThank you for inviting me,โ€ I added, turning back to offer him a polite smile. โ€œIโ€™ll see you at school tomโ€”โ€

My words were cut off when Jamie planted his mouth on mine.

Completely stunned by the abrupt move, I froze with my eyes wide open, and his lips clamped shut.

Oh my God.

Oh my God.

Ew, ew, ew!

When he dug a hand into my curls and tried to deepen the kiss by slobbering his tongue against my firmly closed lips, I arched backwards until my hands found purchase on the concrete footpath outside.

Scrambling backwards like a double-jointed ninja, I climbed out of the car and sprang to my feet. โ€œOkay,ย ew!โ€ I didnโ€™t even bother to try to hide the shudder that rolled through me. โ€œJust โ€ฆ ew!โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ Jamie replied, tone gruff and eyes full of darkened lust. โ€œWas that too fast for you?โ€

โ€œUh,ย yeah.โ€ Turning on my heels, I hurried up the driveway to my house, all the while ignoring the boy calling after me.

โ€œEw. Ew. Ew. Ew!โ€ The minute I was safely inside my front door, I shook and shimmied around the front hall, feeling like spiders were crawling all over my skin. โ€œOh my God!โ€

โ€œHow was the date?โ€ Hugh called out from the sitting room.

โ€œTraumatizing,โ€ I called back, moving for the stairs. โ€œHe tried to lick my mouth, Hugh!โ€

I heard my brother snort in response. โ€œI hope you kicked him in the nuts.โ€

โ€œI was too busy trying to evade his giant tongue.โ€

โ€œNice.โ€

โ€œBelieve me, Hugh, it was the opposite of nice.โ€

โ€œThen delete his number.โ€

โ€œOh, donโ€™t worry, itโ€™s on the agenda.โ€ Gagging, I thundered up the staircase. โ€œRight after I take a shower in Listerine!โ€

Cherub was on my bed when I walked into my bedroom after showering, looking like a sweet baby angel all nestled up in my dressing gown.

โ€œHi, my pretty girl,โ€ I cooed, clambering onto my bed to join her. โ€œDid you miss me?โ€

I barely had time to get comfortable when my bedroom door swung inwards.

โ€œHow was yourย date?โ€

โ€œExcellent,โ€ I replied, narrowing my eyes when Gerard swaggered into my room without knocking. โ€œCouldnโ€™t have gone better.โ€

โ€œMarvelous,โ€ he replied sarcastically. โ€œIโ€™mย delightedย for you.โ€

โ€œThank you,โ€ I snapped back, furious with my heart for beating so damn fast at the mere sight of him. โ€œSo am I.โ€

โ€œRight, well, letโ€™s just get this over with, shall we?โ€

โ€œGet what over with, exactly?โ€

โ€œThe matter of custody.โ€ Rolling up the sleeves of his school shirt, Gerard glanced around my room before finally settling his heated gaze on me. โ€œYou canโ€™t keep my kids from me. I have rights.โ€

โ€œAre you serious?โ€ I shook my head and gaped at him. โ€œOh my god, Gerard, Iโ€™m not going to keep the babies from you.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what you say now,โ€ he argued, moving for the basket in the corner of my room. โ€œBut Iโ€™ve been through this before, Claire.โ€ Reaching inside, he gently scooped Dick into his arms. โ€œI know how it goes when the mam gets a new partner.โ€ Stroking him affectionately, he pressed a kiss to the top of his head. โ€œI wonโ€™t be pushed out of their lives.โ€

โ€œGerard.โ€ My mouth fell open as my brain absorbed his words. โ€œI would never do that to our family.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what they all say, but Iโ€™m telling you now, if you even think about letting him meet our babies, I will lose my fucking mind, Claire,โ€ he added. โ€œI mean it. Itโ€™s bad enough that I had to watch him take you out tonight, but if I see him in this room with these cats, I will lose it.โ€

โ€œOh, calm down, will you?โ€ I snapped, clambering off the bed. โ€œI went to the cinema with Jamie, I didnโ€™t accept a marriage proposal from him.โ€ Stalking over to him, I swiped Dick out of his arms and placed him back in the basket with his littermates. โ€œI think one date is a little early for family introductions.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what I thought, too,โ€ Gerard agreed, hands on hips. โ€œBut then I walked into the kitchen and found him with your mother and brother.โ€

Aw crackers.

He had me there.

โ€œListen, I didnโ€™t ask him to do that,โ€ I heard myself say, trying to reason with the part of my friend that had been damaged from his parentsโ€™ behavior during his formative years. โ€œI thought he would wait in the car.โ€ Shrugging helplessly, I added, โ€œI mean, isnโ€™t that what boys are supposed to do when they take girls out on dates?โ€

โ€œI have no idea, Claire,โ€ Gerard replied hotly, โ€œbecause the only girl Iโ€™ve ever taken out is standing in front of me.โ€

โ€œGerard.โ€

โ€œI can take you,โ€ he blurted out. โ€œIf thereโ€™s a film you want to see, Iโ€™ll take you, Claire.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not what tonight was about.โ€

โ€œThen what was it about?โ€

โ€œGerard.โ€ My heart jackknifed in my chest. โ€œYou know why I went out with him tonight.โ€

โ€œNope,โ€ he stubbornly replied. โ€œNo clue.โ€

โ€œYes, you do,โ€ I accused, mirroring his actions by planting my handsย on my hips. โ€œYou know exactly why.โ€

โ€œWell, if you meant to hurt me, then congratu-fucking-lations, Claire, because it worked,โ€ he tossed back. โ€œYou succeeded.โ€

โ€œWell, now you know how I feel!โ€ I shot back, feeling a million different emotions rush through me. โ€œOh my God!โ€ I wasnโ€™t ashamed to admit that I stamped my foot in the heat of the moment. โ€œYou are so frustrating!โ€

โ€œMe?โ€ His eyes widened in outrage. โ€œYouโ€™re the one in the relationship when youโ€™re already in a relationship.โ€

โ€œI amย notย in a relationship, Gerard.โ€

โ€œYes, you are,โ€ he roared back at me. โ€œWith me!โ€

โ€œWe are not together, Gerard.โ€

โ€œYes, we are!โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not yours.โ€

โ€œWell, Iโ€™m yours,โ€ he came right back with. โ€œIโ€™m yours, Claire.โ€

His words sucked the air out of the room, and I staggered back, feeling like he had physically struck me. The hypocrisy was suffocating.

โ€œThen why didnโ€™t you think about me before you put your mouth on other girls!โ€ I roared back at him.

His eyes bulged and he threw his hands up in frustration. โ€œWhatย girls?โ€

โ€œHow about Bernadette Brady for starters!โ€ I threw back at him. โ€œHugh said you fingered her in second year, and you took a drink!โ€

โ€œBernadette Brady?โ€ He gaped at me like I had lost my mind. โ€œJesus Christ, Claire, that was a million years ago. I donโ€™t even remember what she looks like!โ€

โ€œWell, I remember how it felt when I heard about it and it hurt, Gerard.โ€ I pressed a hand to my chest and growled. โ€œGod, itโ€™s not fair. You are not being fair here! Youโ€™re acting like thereโ€™s one rule for you and a whole other set of rules for me!โ€

โ€œListen, I might have made a few mistakes in the past, and Iโ€™m far from fucking perfect, but contrary to popular belief, Iโ€™m not walking around town, ramming my tongue down other girlsโ€™ throats, Claire!โ€

โ€œOh my god!โ€ I screamed, throwing my hands up. โ€œYou just keepย wrecking my plans, Gerard!โ€

โ€œWhat plans?โ€ he shouted back. โ€œThe plans you have with Jamie fucking Kelleher.โ€

โ€œWithย anyย other boys.โ€

โ€œGood!โ€

โ€œGood?โ€ I eyeballed him with intent to cause bodily harm. โ€œGood? Thatโ€™s all you have to say for yourself?โ€

โ€œYeah, good.โ€ He doubled down by adding, โ€œIโ€™m not sorry, and Iโ€™m not stepping aside again!โ€

โ€œStepping aside?โ€ I gaped at him. โ€œGerard, you chose to step aside!โ€

โ€œYeah, well now Iโ€™m choosing not to,โ€ he shouted at the top of his lungs. โ€œIโ€™ll give you my weekends, Claire. Iโ€™ll give you my weekdays, too. Whatever you want. Cinemas. Restaurants. Date nights. Itโ€™s yours. Just promise me you wonโ€™t go out with him again.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re only saying this because youโ€™re jealous,โ€ I shot back, trembling. โ€œBecause Jamie dared to kiss me when you werenโ€™t โ€ฆ โ€

โ€œHold up.โ€ His face paled and he pushed a shaky hand through his hair. โ€œYou kissed him?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I choked out, feeling my face flame. โ€œI didnโ€™t kiss him.โ€

โ€œBut he kissed you?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

Frozen to the spot, I watched as a million different emotions flickered in his eyes. โ€œJamie kissed you tonight?โ€ he asked again. โ€œAt the cinema?โ€

โ€œIn his car,โ€ I croaked out.

โ€œHe kissed you in his car?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

Reaching up, he rubbed his chest before asking, โ€œWas it good?โ€

I thought about it for a moment before saying, โ€œNo.โ€

He swallowed deeply. โ€œNo?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I whispered, feeling my entire body tremble, as I watched him watch me.

โ€œWhy wasnโ€™t it good, Claire?โ€

โ€œBecause it wasnโ€™t โ€ฆ โ€ย you.ย โ€œExpected.โ€

โ€œExpected.โ€ He nodded to himself. โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Heart aching, I stood in front of Gerard, and locked my legs in place. โ€œNo, itโ€™s not okay, Gerard.โ€ Everything inside of me was demanding I go to him, and it was taking an inhuman amount of mental strength to stand my ground. โ€œItโ€™s not okay at all.โ€

Gerard bowed his head in defeat but didnโ€™t say a word.

โ€œItโ€™s not okay,โ€ I repeated, readjusting the towel I had wrapped around me. โ€œBecause thisย hurts.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t say that.โ€ His voice was barely more than a whisper and laced with helpless urgency. โ€œPlease donโ€™t fucking say that, Claire.โ€

โ€œThis hurts me, Gerard,โ€ I repeated, refusing to let him off the hook this time. โ€œYour behavior is hurting me.โ€

โ€œI love you,โ€ he stated quietly. โ€œI always have. Take that whatever way you want. Itโ€™s still the truth.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t love me and then do stuff with other girls.โ€

โ€œWell, thatโ€™s exactly what happened,โ€ he replied, voice torn. โ€œI did stupid shit; maybe it was because I was afraid, or maybe because Iโ€™ve never felt worthy of you.โ€ Shaking his head, he gave me one final glance before walking to the door. โ€œEither way, I canโ€™t change my past.โ€
