I was quiet the entire drive to the cinema, while I listened to Jamie harp on about random hooligan attacks on parked cars at Tommen. Apparently, Jamie had been the victim of one such attack, and because of this, had resorted to driving his motherโs Fiesta, while the engine of his own car was being worked on at Tonyโs Garage downtown.
I smiled politely and responded at all the right cues, but I would be a liar if I said I felt comfortable. In truth, I felt anything but. Seeing Gerard in my kitchen before we left for our date had thrown a spanner into the midst of an already very bad idea. The look of betrayal in his gray eyes was undeniable and I felt like such a damn fraud.
You are not a fraud.
You are doing the right thing.
Finally. After sixteen years of hanging on a limb, waiting for a boy who was never going to step forward for me, I was doing the right thing for myself and moving on.
If itโs so right, then why does it feel so wrong?
When we took our seats at the back of the cinema, I felt more than a little uncertain. I wasnโt used to sharing a coupleโs seat with anyone other than Gerard.
Usually, we brought a blanket and everything and made ourselves comfortable. Iโd spent some of my favorite Saturday afternoons right here in screen two with the boy across the street, watching matinee movies that ranged from cartoons when we were younger to romance, thrillers, and even gory horror.
In a weird way, I felt like I was cheating on him somehow by being here with another boy. A boy that wasnโt him. It was a ridiculous way to feel, considering heโd been with lots of girls. But I couldnโt helpย how I felt. I couldnโt seem to trick my heart into believing this was a good idea, even my brain was strongly encouraging me to be here with Jamie.
An anxious feeling tugged at my belly, but I pushed it down, needing toย notย let my heart talk me out of what my head knew was best.
Jamie had nice hair. It was dark and spiked and had the perfect amount of gel pushed through it. And he smelled really nice. I was a dinger for scents, and I could pick out his Hugo Boss cologne a mile off.
It was nice.
This wasย nice.
When he shifted in his seat during the movie and casually draped an arm over my shoulder, I felt a pang of panic gnaw at my gut, before swiftly shutting that down with a mental verbal warning.ย This is fine. This is what you wanted. Youโre not doing anything wrong here, Claire. Just go with it.
โAre you okay?โ
โYeah.โ Nodding, I smiled brightly up at him, trying to send the warmest, kindest vibes I could muster out into the atmosphere.ย This is good. Itโs all good, and youโre on the right path.ย โYou?โ
โIโm really glad you decided to do this with me.โ His arm tightened around my shoulder.
My heart fluttered uncertainly, and it almost felt like it was trying to break its way out of my chest and fly back home toย him. โYeah.โ I smiled. โMe, too.โ
โGood.โ Still smiling, he leaned in closer. โI think youโre very beautiful.โ
Oh God.
Oh no.
Run, Claire, run!
โIโm hungry,โ I blurted out, turning my face away just in the nick of time. Jamieโs lips grazed my cheek, and I quickly stuffed a handful of popcorn into my mouth. โMmm! Tastes so โฆ good.โ
*
Please donโt say it.
Please God donโt let him say it.
โSo, we should do this again sometime,โ Jamie said when he pulled up outside my house after the cinema, and the clichรฉd phrase made me internally gag.ย How predictable.
โIt was a good night,โ I replied politely, while not giving him an answer. โI had a nice time.โ Quickly unfastening my seatbelt, I reached for the door handle and pushed the door open. โThank you for inviting me,โ I added, turning back to offer him a polite smile. โIโll see you at school tomโโ
My words were cut off when Jamie planted his mouth on mine.
Completely stunned by the abrupt move, I froze with my eyes wide open, and his lips clamped shut.
Oh my God.
Oh my God.
Ew, ew, ew!
When he dug a hand into my curls and tried to deepen the kiss by slobbering his tongue against my firmly closed lips, I arched backwards until my hands found purchase on the concrete footpath outside.
Scrambling backwards like a double-jointed ninja, I climbed out of the car and sprang to my feet. โOkay,ย ew!โ I didnโt even bother to try to hide the shudder that rolled through me. โJust โฆ ew!โ
โIโm sorry,โ Jamie replied, tone gruff and eyes full of darkened lust. โWas that too fast for you?โ
โUh,ย yeah.โ Turning on my heels, I hurried up the driveway to my house, all the while ignoring the boy calling after me.
โEw. Ew. Ew. Ew!โ The minute I was safely inside my front door, I shook and shimmied around the front hall, feeling like spiders were crawling all over my skin. โOh my God!โ
โHow was the date?โ Hugh called out from the sitting room.
โTraumatizing,โ I called back, moving for the stairs. โHe tried to lick my mouth, Hugh!โ
I heard my brother snort in response. โI hope you kicked him in the nuts.โ
โI was too busy trying to evade his giant tongue.โ
โNice.โ
โBelieve me, Hugh, it was the opposite of nice.โ
โThen delete his number.โ
โOh, donโt worry, itโs on the agenda.โ Gagging, I thundered up the staircase. โRight after I take a shower in Listerine!โ
Cherub was on my bed when I walked into my bedroom after showering, looking like a sweet baby angel all nestled up in my dressing gown.
โHi, my pretty girl,โ I cooed, clambering onto my bed to join her. โDid you miss me?โ
I barely had time to get comfortable when my bedroom door swung inwards.
โHow was yourย date?โ
โExcellent,โ I replied, narrowing my eyes when Gerard swaggered into my room without knocking. โCouldnโt have gone better.โ
โMarvelous,โ he replied sarcastically. โIโmย delightedย for you.โ
โThank you,โ I snapped back, furious with my heart for beating so damn fast at the mere sight of him. โSo am I.โ
โRight, well, letโs just get this over with, shall we?โ
โGet what over with, exactly?โ
โThe matter of custody.โ Rolling up the sleeves of his school shirt, Gerard glanced around my room before finally settling his heated gaze on me. โYou canโt keep my kids from me. I have rights.โ
โAre you serious?โ I shook my head and gaped at him. โOh my god, Gerard, Iโm not going to keep the babies from you.โ
โThatโs what you say now,โ he argued, moving for the basket in the corner of my room. โBut Iโve been through this before, Claire.โ Reaching inside, he gently scooped Dick into his arms. โI know how it goes when the mam gets a new partner.โ Stroking him affectionately, he pressed a kiss to the top of his head. โI wonโt be pushed out of their lives.โ
โGerard.โ My mouth fell open as my brain absorbed his words. โI would never do that to our family.โ
โThatโs what they all say, but Iโm telling you now, if you even think about letting him meet our babies, I will lose my fucking mind, Claire,โ he added. โI mean it. Itโs bad enough that I had to watch him take you out tonight, but if I see him in this room with these cats, I will lose it.โ
โOh, calm down, will you?โ I snapped, clambering off the bed. โI went to the cinema with Jamie, I didnโt accept a marriage proposal from him.โ Stalking over to him, I swiped Dick out of his arms and placed him back in the basket with his littermates. โI think one date is a little early for family introductions.โ
โThatโs what I thought, too,โ Gerard agreed, hands on hips. โBut then I walked into the kitchen and found him with your mother and brother.โ
Aw crackers.
He had me there.
โListen, I didnโt ask him to do that,โ I heard myself say, trying to reason with the part of my friend that had been damaged from his parentsโ behavior during his formative years. โI thought he would wait in the car.โ Shrugging helplessly, I added, โI mean, isnโt that what boys are supposed to do when they take girls out on dates?โ
โI have no idea, Claire,โ Gerard replied hotly, โbecause the only girl Iโve ever taken out is standing in front of me.โ
โGerard.โ
โI can take you,โ he blurted out. โIf thereโs a film you want to see, Iโll take you, Claire.โ
โThatโs not what tonight was about.โ
โThen what was it about?โ
โGerard.โ My heart jackknifed in my chest. โYou know why I went out with him tonight.โ
โNope,โ he stubbornly replied. โNo clue.โ
โYes, you do,โ I accused, mirroring his actions by planting my handsย on my hips. โYou know exactly why.โ
โWell, if you meant to hurt me, then congratu-fucking-lations, Claire, because it worked,โ he tossed back. โYou succeeded.โ
โWell, now you know how I feel!โ I shot back, feeling a million different emotions rush through me. โOh my God!โ I wasnโt ashamed to admit that I stamped my foot in the heat of the moment. โYou are so frustrating!โ
โMe?โ His eyes widened in outrage. โYouโre the one in the relationship when youโre already in a relationship.โ
โI amย notย in a relationship, Gerard.โ
โYes, you are,โ he roared back at me. โWith me!โ
โWe are not together, Gerard.โ
โYes, we are!โ
โIโm not yours.โ
โWell, Iโm yours,โ he came right back with. โIโm yours, Claire.โ
His words sucked the air out of the room, and I staggered back, feeling like he had physically struck me. The hypocrisy was suffocating.
โThen why didnโt you think about me before you put your mouth on other girls!โ I roared back at him.
His eyes bulged and he threw his hands up in frustration. โWhatย girls?โ
โHow about Bernadette Brady for starters!โ I threw back at him. โHugh said you fingered her in second year, and you took a drink!โ
โBernadette Brady?โ He gaped at me like I had lost my mind. โJesus Christ, Claire, that was a million years ago. I donโt even remember what she looks like!โ
โWell, I remember how it felt when I heard about it and it hurt, Gerard.โ I pressed a hand to my chest and growled. โGod, itโs not fair. You are not being fair here! Youโre acting like thereโs one rule for you and a whole other set of rules for me!โ
โListen, I might have made a few mistakes in the past, and Iโm far from fucking perfect, but contrary to popular belief, Iโm not walking around town, ramming my tongue down other girlsโ throats, Claire!โ
โOh my god!โ I screamed, throwing my hands up. โYou just keepย wrecking my plans, Gerard!โ
โWhat plans?โ he shouted back. โThe plans you have with Jamie fucking Kelleher.โ
โWithย anyย other boys.โ
โGood!โ
โGood?โ I eyeballed him with intent to cause bodily harm. โGood? Thatโs all you have to say for yourself?โ
โYeah, good.โ He doubled down by adding, โIโm not sorry, and Iโm not stepping aside again!โ
โStepping aside?โ I gaped at him. โGerard, you chose to step aside!โ
โYeah, well now Iโm choosing not to,โ he shouted at the top of his lungs. โIโll give you my weekends, Claire. Iโll give you my weekdays, too. Whatever you want. Cinemas. Restaurants. Date nights. Itโs yours. Just promise me you wonโt go out with him again.โ
โYouโre only saying this because youโre jealous,โ I shot back, trembling. โBecause Jamie dared to kiss me when you werenโt โฆ โ
โHold up.โ His face paled and he pushed a shaky hand through his hair. โYou kissed him?โ
โNo,โ I choked out, feeling my face flame. โI didnโt kiss him.โ
โBut he kissed you?โ
โYes.โ
Frozen to the spot, I watched as a million different emotions flickered in his eyes. โJamie kissed you tonight?โ he asked again. โAt the cinema?โ
โIn his car,โ I croaked out.
โHe kissed you in his car?โ
โYes.โ
Reaching up, he rubbed his chest before asking, โWas it good?โ
I thought about it for a moment before saying, โNo.โ
He swallowed deeply. โNo?โ
โNo,โ I whispered, feeling my entire body tremble, as I watched him watch me.
โWhy wasnโt it good, Claire?โ
โBecause it wasnโt โฆ โย you.ย โExpected.โ
โExpected.โ He nodded to himself. โOkay.โ
โNo.โ Heart aching, I stood in front of Gerard, and locked my legs in place. โNo, itโs not okay, Gerard.โ Everything inside of me was demanding I go to him, and it was taking an inhuman amount of mental strength to stand my ground. โItโs not okay at all.โ
Gerard bowed his head in defeat but didnโt say a word.
โItโs not okay,โ I repeated, readjusting the towel I had wrapped around me. โBecause thisย hurts.โ
โDonโt say that.โ His voice was barely more than a whisper and laced with helpless urgency. โPlease donโt fucking say that, Claire.โ
โThis hurts me, Gerard,โ I repeated, refusing to let him off the hook this time. โYour behavior is hurting me.โ
โI love you,โ he stated quietly. โI always have. Take that whatever way you want. Itโs still the truth.โ
โYou canโt love me and then do stuff with other girls.โ
โWell, thatโs exactly what happened,โ he replied, voice torn. โI did stupid shit; maybe it was because I was afraid, or maybe because Iโve never felt worthy of you.โ Shaking his head, he gave me one final glance before walking to the door. โEither way, I canโt change my past.โ
