When I strolled into the Biggsโ kitchen later that night, I was aghast, I tell you, a-fucking-ghast, to see Jamie Kelleher sitting onย myย chair at the table.
Christ, karma moved quickly.
โGibs,โ Sinead acknowledged, intercepting me before I had a chance to toss the intrusive bastard of a cuckoo out ofย myย nest. โIย know,โ she said quietly, brown eyes locked on mine, as she patted my cheek affectionately. โBest behavior now, you hear?โ She grabbed a plate off the counter and handed it to me. โThatโs a good boy.โ
Nodding stiffly, I took my plate and walked over to the table, not stopping until I was standing in front of fuck-face himself. โYouโre in my seat.โ
โI didnโt see your name on it, lad,โ Jamie joked, looking slick in his fancy black coat and gelled hair.
โItโs right there,โ Hugh offered, using his fork to point out the wordย Gibsieย engraved on the chair. โMove.โ
โDonโt families usually eat dinner together,โ Jamie muttered under his breath as he begrudgingly took the seat at the end of the table.
โThey do,โ Hugh replied with a sharp edge to his tone. โHeย isย family.โ
โIs he here yet?โ Claire asked, hurrying into the kitchen, looking better than anything Sinead could serve up. Seriously, this girl was the best thing that woman had ever cooked. โBecause Iโm running seriously late,โ she added, holding one high-heeled boot in her hand. โYouโre here?โ Her eyes widened when they landed on Jamie. โHugh, why didnโt you tell me?โ
โBecause Iโm not your messenger,โ he tossed back sarcastically, while he tucked in to his plate of food, not bothering to look up at his little sister.
โHi, Claire,โ Jamie said, immediately standing up and moving to her side. โYou look lovely.โ
โThanks,โ she replied, cheeks flushed. The smile she was sporting quicky faded when her gaze landed on me. โGerard,โ she gasped, breath hitching in her throat.
I twiddled my fingers at her. โClaire-Bear.โ
Her face flushed bright red.
Good.
โOkay, boys, Iโm off to work,โ Sinead cut the tension by announcing. โHugh, load the dishwasher and switch it on before you go to Katieโs โ oh, and Gerard, run the hoover around under the table after you eat, please, pet.โ
โWill do.โ
โBest behavior, boys.โ
โAlways.โ
โAnd back home before eleven oโclock, Claire.โ
โOkay, Mam.โ
โJamie, it was nice to meet you, love.โ
โYou too, Mrs. Biggs.โ
โOh, oh, oh, I almost forgot to ask.โ Quickly backpedaling into the kitchen in her green scrubs, Sinead said, โA little birdie told me that you agreed to swimming lessons. Is that true, lad?โ
Fuck no! I agreed to take a bath. I made no such commitments to stepping foot inside a swimming pool, but I refused to lose face in front of an asshole like Jamie Kelleher, so I nodded instead.
โYou went back in the water, lad?โ Hughโs interest was instantly piqued.
I nodded stiffly.
โIโm so proud of you, pet,โ Sinead stated, and then she blew all of us kisses before dashing off for her shift at the hospital.
โWell, shit.โ Hugh set his fork down and gave me his full attention. โYou really went back in the water?โ He gave me a meaningful look. โHow was it?โ
โBearable,โ I replied with a shrug. And then, because I was feeling bitter, I added, โClaireโs an amazing teacher.โ I narrowed my eyes at the cuckoo with his arm aroundย myย love bird. โVery hands on.โ
Jamieโs nostrils flared, letting me know that he clearly got my drift.
Yeah, Iโm watching you, fucker.ย I glared back at him.ย Keep your goddamn hands off.
โWe better get going,โ he said, reaching for Claireโs hand. โThe film starts in half an hour.โ
โOh, okay.โ Yanking her hand out of his reach, she flicked her eyes to me before shaking her head and making a bolt for the kitchen door. โSee you later, guys.โ
โToodles,โ I called after them, tone laced with an unhealthy dollop of sarcasm. The moment the sound of the front door slamming filled the air, I faceplanted the table and groaned. โFuck my life.โ
โYou good, Gibs?โ
โSheโs going out with him.โ
โWho?โ
โWho?โ I raised my head to gape at him โMary McAleese. Claire, you spanner.ย Claire!ย Who else?โ
โYeah, and you should support it,โ Hugh replied, tone suddenly serious. โI mean it, Gibs. You need to let her go.โ
โWhy?โ
โWhy?โ Now, he was the one to eyeball me. โBecause youโve been leading her on for years.โ
โI havenโt.โ
โYou have, lad.โ
โI love your sister,โ I enunciated every word, knowing that it might lead me to an ass-kicking, but not caring either way. It was the truth. โIย loveย your sister, Hugh.โ
โNot the right way,โ he replied, reaching for his fork once more. โNot the way she needs you to.โ
โWhich is?โ
โIf you think Iโm giving you tips on wooing my sister, youโre off yourย rocket.โ
โIโm a wonderful woo-er.โ
โSure you are, lad.โ
โI am,โ I huffed, folding my arms across my chest. โI can woo.โ
โYouโre a messer is what you are,โ he replied between mouthfuls of roast beef. โAnd thatโs grand. We all love your messy antics.โ
โBut?โ
โYouโre not exactly boyfriend material now, are you, lad?โ
โEx-fucking-scuse me,โ I gasped, practically falling out of my seat in my outrage. โYouโre one to talk, mister seeing one girl while pining after another one entirely.โ
โHey!โ
โHey right back,โ I snapped. โDonโt deny it, fucker. You think you know everything about me? Well, I know just as much about you.โ Eyeballing him, I added, โMm-hm, thatโs right, Iย seeย you.โ
โYouโre talking out of your ass, Gibs,โ he bit out.
โIโm spitting facts.โ
โYouโll be spitting your teeth out if you donโt give it a rest.โ
โFine.โ I held my hands up. โKeep on living in your bubble, lad.โ
โThereโs nothing wrong with my bubble.โ
โExcept that itโs a lie.โ
โStop trying to turn this around on me, Gibs!โ Inhaling a calming breath, Hugh forced calm into his voice when he said, โListen, youโre out for a good time and thatโs grand, lad. But Claireโs over it. Sheโs looking for a nice lad to take her out and hold her hand.โ
โIย take her out,โ I argued, jabbing my chest with my finger. โIย hold her hand.โ
โYeah, her and how many other girls?โ
โAre you implying that Iโm some kind of fuckboy?โ
โAre you insinuating that you arenโt?โ
โIโm not insinuating anything,โ I shot back. โIโm telling you straight out that Iโm not.โ
โSays the fella riding the school receptionist.โ
โFor the last time, I didnโt ride the woman!โ
โSure thing, Gibs. Whatever you say, lad.โ
โItโs the truth,โ I defended, rising to my feet. โI amย notย a fuckboy.โ
โThen prove it.โ
โOh, donโt you fucking worry, Hugo, I plan to.โ
โWell, look what the cat dragged in,โ Mam said when I walked into the sitting room. โHowโs the emancipation treating you, son? Have you had your fill of sulking yet, or are you planning on turning poor Edel Kavanaghโs house into your own personal hotel?โ
โDonโt start,โ I grumbled, leaning in the doorway. โAre you alone?โ
โYes,โ she replied, pausingย Fair City. โKeithโs at the bingo.โ
โAndย him?โ
โUp the country visiting a few college friends.โ
โGood,โ I snapped. โLetโs hope he forgets the way home.โ
Mam sighed wearily. โGerard.โ
Feeling my shoulders relax a little, I gestured to where my mother was sitting. โAnd you didnโt go to the bingo?โ
โNo, Gerard, I didnโt,โ she replied, giving me a pointed look. โBecause contrary to your beliefs, Iย amย here for you.โ Narrowing her eyes, she added, โWhen you decide to grace me with your presence, that is.โ
โYou want to be here for me?โ
โIย amย here for you.โ
โFine.โ Stalking over to the couch, I threw myself down and draped an arm over my face. โThen be here for me.โ
โWhatโs wrong?โ
โOh, I donโt know, Mam, how aboutย everything!โ I wailed. โDo we have the good ice-cream in the freezer?โ
โAlways for you, my little cherub.โ
โGood, because Iโm going to need the whole tub,โ I groaned. โAnd a razor.โ
โOh Gerard, nothing is that bad, is it?โ
โThat depends on how you view heartbreak, Mam,โ I replied, pressing a hand to my chest. โBecause if you took an X-ray of mine right now, youโd see it cracked in half.โ
โAh, come on now,โ Mam laughed, turning to look at me. โWhatโs all this moping about?โ
โClaire,โ I strangled out, rubbing the sore spot of my chest. โSheโs at the cinema with another fella.โ
Mam gasped. โShe isnโt.โ
โShe is.โ I twisted in discomfort. โFuck, I think I might cry.โ
โWhen did this happen?โ
โTonight, right now, in front of my fucking face.โ
โLanguage, Gerard!โ
โMam!โ I pulled myself up on my elbows to glare at her. โIโm dying from a broken heart here and youโre worried about my language?โ I shook my head and gaped. โThisย hurts, okay? I am in serious pain here.โ
โLove hurts, pet,โ Mam replied, smothering her smile with her hand. โAnd Iโm sure this is all one big misunderstanding.โ
โI literally just watched her drive off in his car, Mam.โ
โI donโt care what you saw,โ Mam argued, batting the air with her hand. โI know that girl adores the ground you walk on and has done since you were both in nappies.โ
โThen you should know that the feeling is very much reciprocated,โ I shot back, not one bit embarrassed by my admission. โWhich is why I amย dyingย here!โ
โI could have a word with Sinead.โ
โAnd say what?โ I gaped at her like she had three heads. โTell her that her daughter broke your sonโs heart? No fucking thanks, Mam. Iโd rather die on my hill of pride right now.โ
โYou could always tell Claire how you feel, Gerard.โ
โI have. I do. Daily!โ
โYou could mean it.โ
โI have neverย notย meant it, Mam!โ Disgusted, I flopped back down onย the couch, only to howl out a groan when another thought poked through my depression. โOh my God. Reginald! Iโm going to lose custody.โ
โAh, here now, Gerard Gibson,โ Mam laughed, throwing the remote at me. โCop onto yourself a small bit, will you?โ
โItโs always the mother who gets to keep the children, Mam!โ
โSon, Reggieโs a hedgehog.โ
โShe already has all the kittens,โ I groaned, biting my fist. โAll Iโm going to end up with is an ice-cream belly, and a tomcat that hates me.โ
โBrian doesnโt hate you.โ
โNo,โ I argued. โBrian is a deceiving bastard who only shows you his best side.โ
โSpeaking of best sides,โ Mam said, โare you planning on showing me yours anytime soon?โ
โWhat do you mean?โ
โAre you going to stay at home tonight?โ
โAre they going to be coming back?โ
โNo, I already told you theyโre gone up the country for a few days.โ
โThen Iโll stay.โ
She sagged in visible relief. โGood boy.โ
โBut the minute heโs back, Iโm gone, Mam,โ I warned her.
She sighed sadly. โOh, Gerard.โ
