Gerard Gibson was becoming a super ninja at evasion, somehow managing to avoid me all day at school, much to my disappointment.
I felt awful about the whole Lizzie drama last night, and knew he had to be stressed about Markโs return. The fact that he hadnโt shown up in my room last night, or appeared in the kitchen for breakfast this morning, only proved to me that things were a lot worse in Gerardโs head than Iโd originally anticipated.
Even though he didnโt join us at lunch, I knew he was at school because Iโd passed him in the hallway a couple of times, while he was in full-blown erratic Gibsie mode.
Regardless of how unsettled I felt, Iโd remained at Tommen after school to watch his game. Like a faithful friend, Iโd stood in the torrential rain with Shannon and cheered our boys on just like I had every other game.
After eighty minutes of intense, physical athletic performance, our schoolโs rugby team had ended up thrashing St. Andrews off the pitch with a final scorecard of 64โ3, with Gerard receiving ten minutes in the sin bin for a tactical foul on the oppositionโs number thirteen.
Instead of waiting at the car with Shan for the boys to come out afterwards, I found myself knocking on the changing room door instead, both unwilling and unable to let another minute tick by without talking it out with him.
โHi!โ I beamed when the door finally swung open. โIs Gerard there?โ I fully appreciated the fact that the boys were probably celebrating in there, but I couldnโt wait another second. Hence, my current overstepping of boundaries โ and school rules. โI really need to talk to him.โ
โWho wants to know?โ a boy I wasnโt familiar with replied, keepingย a firm hold on the changing room door to prevent me from entering, no doubt.
โUh, me?โ I rolled my eyes. โClearly.โ
โAnd you are?โ
โWho amย I?โ I gave him a slow appraisal, taking note of the towel hanging precariously low on his narrow hips. โWho are you, more like?โ
โDamien Cleary.โ
โAnd where did you come from,ย Damien?โ
โIโm new,โ he replied flatly. โTransferred in from St. Patโs for sixth year.โ
โWell, Damien Clearyโโ I smiled sweetly up at him โโIโm Claire Biggs. Iโm sixteen, a Leo, and a fellow Tommen student, and I really need to speak to Gerard, so if you could be a doll and grab him for me, I would be super grateful.โ
He stared blankly at me for several beats before attempting to close the door in my face.
โHey!โ I snapped, sticking my foot in the door, and pushing it back open. โRude much?โ
โI might be new, but Iโm not thick,โ he deadpanned. โThereโs no Gerard on the team, princess, so run along.โ
โExcuseย me?โ I narrowed my eyes. โYes, there is. He just ran over two tries for your team,ย Damien.โ
โNo, thereโs not. I think Iโd know my teammatesโ names. Now fuck off.โ
My mouth fell open in shock. โWow, you reallyย areย rude.โ
โHey โ you canโt come in here!โ Damien argued, when I pushed at the door and tried to squeeze past. โLads, thereโs a crazy blonde out here. Cover your cocks!โ
โHeโs number seven on the team, idiot,โ I huffed, shoving past rude boy in my bid to get to my destination. โAnd ew! Like I would ever want to look at any of your baby elephant trunks.โ
โBiggs, your sisterโs on the warpath.โ
โHey, baby, this elephant trunk expands.โ
โSure it does, Robbie,โ I replied, rolling my eyes. โAnd Iโm sure when it does itโs as easy to find as Whereโs Wally.โ
โOooh, burn, lad!โ
โSo, this is what the boysโ changing room is like,โ I mused, hands on my hips, as I observed thirty or so teenage boys scrambling to get dressed, while feeling both impressed and jealous of the rugby teamโs top-notch facilities. Holy crap, they even had their own physio room.ย Fancy. โWell, I think itโs fair to say that you all should be ashamed of yourselves,โ I added, pegging my nose from the overwhelming stench of teenage boy. โBecause this place is a pigsty!โ
โWhoa, Claire, this is the boysโ changing room,โ Patrick called out, rushing to cover his dignity with a rugby ball. โYou know you canโt come in here, right?โ
โHi, Patrick!โ I made a beeline for him. โSo sorry for the intrusion, but I really need to speak to Gerard.โ
โHe was late coming up from the pitch. Try the showers,โ he replied, using his free hand to point me in the right direction.
โThanks so much.โ Smiling, I waved him off. โYouโre the best โ oh, andย niceย ball.โ
โJesus.โ
โClaire!โ Hugh roared, storming through another doorway only partially dressed in a pair of gray sweats. Yikes, he looked just as angry today as he had been last night. Clearly, sleeping on it hadnโt brightened his mood. โWhat the hell are you doing?โ
โLooking for Gerard,โ I explained with a huff. โAnd that new boy over there was super rude to me,โ I added, jabbing a finger in the direction ofย Damien. โHe told me to fuck off.โ
โYou told my sister to fuck off?โ Hughโs attention immediately flicked toย Damien, and I felt an immense amount of pleasure when he turned beetroot red. โIn what world did you assume it was okay to speak to her like that?โ
โMy bad, Biggs. I didnโt know she was your sister.โ
โIt wouldnโt matter either way,โ Johnny answered, appearing fromย the tall archway that led to the showers in a pair of black boxer shorts. โYouโre new, Cleary, so Iโm going to give you a hall pass this time. But for future reference, we donโt talk to our girls like that. You got that?โ
โYeah, Iโve got it.โ Rude boyโs face turned an even deeper shade of red. โWonโt happen again, Cap.โ
Oh boy, it was quite the power trip to be around Johnny Kavanagh. The boy oozed intensity.ย Lucky Shan.
โYeah, Cleary,โ I tossed out, feeling brave with the backing of the alpha. โYou see that it doesnโt!โ And then, because I was still three years old in the prefrontal cortex of my brain, I poked my tongue out at him for good measure.
โYou have about two minutes before Coach comes in for post-game analysis,โ Johnny explained, flicking his attention back to me. โMake it snappy.โ
โYouโre the best captain boss ever!โ Patting his ridiculously hard pectoral, I scampered through the archway. โAnd good job winning your game.โ
Following the sound of running water with a pep in my step, I stopped short when I rounded the corner and came face to back with a naked flanker.
The moment my eyes landed on his bare butt, a high-pitched, โOmigod,โ escaped my lips and I quickly slapped a hand over my eyes and backed up against the opposite wall, heart racing violently. โIโm really sorry for what Iโm about to tell you, but I think I just saw your ladder dangling between your legs.โ
โSo?โ A familiar chuckle came from the shower area. โYouโve seen my ladder before.โ
My heart raced harder at that. โUh, not from that angle, I havenโt.โ
โWhatโs up, Claire-Bear?โ
โIโve been trying to get ahold of you all day,โ I explained, feeling a ridiculous amount of relief at being in his company again. โYou are a hard man to track down, Gerard Gibson.โ
โI saw you at school.โ
โNo,โ I corrected, hand still clamped over my eyes, as the damp perspiration on the tiles at my back began to seep into my school uniform. โI waved to you in the hallway between classes, and you waved back. Thatโs not the same thing.โ Blowing out a shaky breath, I forced myself to address the elephant in the room. โWhere the hell were you last night? I came over and you were gone. Andย Markย was there!โ
The sound of flowing water abruptly stopped.
โGerard?โ I called out when he didnโt respond. โDid you hear me?โ
โYeah, I heard you.โ His voice was closer now. โAnd yeah, I know.โ I felt his hand brush past against my arm, and it caused my entire body to ignite in a hot flush. โSorry.โ I felt his hand on my hip, gently steering me to one side. โMy towel is on the hook behind you.โ
โOkie-dokie,โ I squeaked out, feeling my face grow hot from the knowledge that his naked body was so close to me. It was more than just that, though, because I wanted to open my fingers and peek. Not just peek. I wanted toย touch. Remembering how it felt in my room the other night when his big body was pressed against mine and his fingers were deep inside me โฆ
โAll clear.โ I felt him gently peel my hand away from my eyes. โThe ladder is safely tucked away.โ
When I blinked my eyes open, I found that to be regrettably true. The white towel wrapped around his narrow hips was proof to that pudding.
Aw crackers.
Feeling weak, I slumped against the tiles at my back. โSo, Markโs back, huh?โ
โApparently so.โ
โYou didnโt know?โ
โNope,โ Gerard replied, resting a hand against the wall at my back. โNo clue.โ
Breath catching in my throat, I swallowed deeply and offered him a small smile, desperately trying to ignore the heat flooding every inch of my body. โAre you okay?โ
โOf course.โ He smiled, but it didnโt meet his eyes. โIโm always okay.โ
โYou didnโt come over last night.โ I shrugged, feeling helpless. โIt was โฆ โย I didnโt like it.ย โWeird.โ
โYeah, sorry about that.โ Exhaling shakily, Gerard reached up with his free hand and pushed his damp curls off his brow. โYou were dealing with Lizzie, and I, ah, I had to get away.โ
โSo, whereโd you go?โ
โCapโs.โ
โOh.โ
โYep.โ
Feeling slightly bereft at his response, I forced another big smile.
He smiled back at me, but again, it didnโt meet his eyes.
Aw crackers.
I didnโt like this. Not one bit. Because Gerard might be physically standing in front of me, with nothing but a towel covering him, but internally he had several layers wrapped around his heart. โTalk to me, Gerard.โ
โAbout what?โ
I narrowed my eyes. โAbout what happened last night.โ
He stared blankly back at me. โWhat about what happened last night?โ
โUh,ย hello? Lizzie basically attacked you and then you find out your evil stepbrother is back in Ballylaggin.โ
โItโs all good, Claire-Bear.โ
โGerard,โ I snapped, โI know youโre upset.โ
โIโm not upset.โ
โYes, you are,โ I urged. โYou have to be.โ
โAnd whyโs that?โ
โBecauseย Markโs back.โ
โI honestly couldnโt give a damn, Claire.โ
โNo, stop.โ Shaking my head in frustration, I reached up and knotted my fingers in the silver chain around his neck. โDonโt do that.โ
โDonโt do what?โ
โAct the fool,โ I growled, yanking on his chain so hard he had to lower his face to mine. โDonโt shut me out, Gerard. Weโve come too far for that.โ
โIโm not trying to do that,โ he said gruffly, nose brushing against mine. โIโm just โฆ โ
โYouโre just?โ I pushed, fisting his chain so tightly I thought it might crack in my hand. Inhaling a shaky breath, I pushed off the wall, melding my chest to his. โYouโre just what, Gerard?โ
โYouโre going to get wet,โ he noted, hooking an arm around my waist to steady us both.
โDonโt change the subject,โ I warned, unwilling to take a step back. โYouโre just what?โ
โYou know itโs a really bad idea to be in here with me, donโt you?โ he asked in a gravelly tone, and I could feelย exactlyย why he would say that growing against my belly. โEspecially since โฆ โ His voice trailed off and he shook his head. โThis is just a really,ย reallyย bad idea, Claire-Bear.โ
โI donโt care,โ I replied, feeling a little breathless, as my heart continued to try to power drill its way out of my chest to get to his. โWe need to talk, so justย talkย to me, dammit.โ
โAnd sayย what?โ he asked softly, breath fanning my face.
โHow about you start by telling me how you feel?โ
โI donโt feel anything.โ He stepped closer, causing my back to hit the wall once more, but this time his body was flush against mine. โNot about Lizzie. Not about him. Not about any of them.โ The move seemed to cause a shiver to roll through both of our bodies simultaneously. โI donโt feel a damn thing.โ
โYouโre lying.โ
โNo, Iโm really not.โ
โGerard,โ I cried out in despair. โPlease!โ
โPlease what?โ he demanded then. โPlease what, Claire? What do you want from me?โ
โYou!โ My chest was heaving against his, my entire body screaming out for him, and I honestly felt like I might die on the mortal spot if heย didnโt put his lips on me. โI want you, Gerard!โ
โIโm right here.โ
โThatโs not what I mean, and you know it,โ I strangled out. โI want you to talk to me about how youโre feeling! I want you to open up to me, dammit!โ
โIย canโt.โ
Devastation washed over me like a tidal wave. โWhy not?โ
โBecause I love you too much!โ he surprised me by saying. Expelling a pained breath, he dropped his head to rest on my shoulder. โBecause I fuckingย loveย you, Claire Biggs.โ
The three words hurt to hear because they werenโt what I needed from him in this moment, and the pain in my chest assured me that my devastated body had come to the equally devastating conclusion that these three words were all this boy would ever give me.
โI donโt understand why you act like this,โ I croaked out, feeling like a masochist for pushing the same broken narrative. โIโm your best friend, and instead of letting me in, you keep pushing me out.โ
โClaire.โ
โNo. No more excuses, Gerard!โ Shaking my head, I pushed at his chest and willed him to wake the hell up. โIโm right here, okay? Iโm right here for you.โ
โI know that.โ
โThenย doย something!โ
He didnโt.
Instead, he opened his mouth. โClaire, if you could just โฆ โ
โNo. Stop!โ I shook my head. โI donโt need any more of your excuses, Gerard Gibson.โ Chest heaving, I stepped around him and moved for the exit. โI need your truth.โ
