Chapter no 38

Taming 7 (Boys of Tommen, 5)

Gerard Gibson was becoming a super ninja at evasion, somehow managing to avoid me all day at school, much to my disappointment.

I felt awful about the whole Lizzie drama last night, and knew he had to be stressed about Markโ€™s return. The fact that he hadnโ€™t shown up in my room last night, or appeared in the kitchen for breakfast this morning, only proved to me that things were a lot worse in Gerardโ€™s head than Iโ€™d originally anticipated.

Even though he didnโ€™t join us at lunch, I knew he was at school because Iโ€™d passed him in the hallway a couple of times, while he was in full-blown erratic Gibsie mode.

Regardless of how unsettled I felt, Iโ€™d remained at Tommen after school to watch his game. Like a faithful friend, Iโ€™d stood in the torrential rain with Shannon and cheered our boys on just like I had every other game.

After eighty minutes of intense, physical athletic performance, our schoolโ€™s rugby team had ended up thrashing St. Andrews off the pitch with a final scorecard of 64โ€“3, with Gerard receiving ten minutes in the sin bin for a tactical foul on the oppositionโ€™s number thirteen.

Instead of waiting at the car with Shan for the boys to come out afterwards, I found myself knocking on the changing room door instead, both unwilling and unable to let another minute tick by without talking it out with him.

โ€œHi!โ€ I beamed when the door finally swung open. โ€œIs Gerard there?โ€ I fully appreciated the fact that the boys were probably celebrating in there, but I couldnโ€™t wait another second. Hence, my current overstepping of boundaries โ€“ and school rules. โ€œI really need to talk to him.โ€

โ€œWho wants to know?โ€ a boy I wasnโ€™t familiar with replied, keepingย a firm hold on the changing room door to prevent me from entering, no doubt.

โ€œUh, me?โ€ I rolled my eyes. โ€œClearly.โ€

โ€œAnd you are?โ€

โ€œWho amย I?โ€ I gave him a slow appraisal, taking note of the towel hanging precariously low on his narrow hips. โ€œWho are you, more like?โ€

โ€œDamien Cleary.โ€

โ€œAnd where did you come from,ย Damien?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m new,โ€ he replied flatly. โ€œTransferred in from St. Patโ€™s for sixth year.โ€

โ€œWell, Damien Clearyโ€”โ€ I smiled sweetly up at him โ€œโ€”Iโ€™m Claire Biggs. Iโ€™m sixteen, a Leo, and a fellow Tommen student, and I really need to speak to Gerard, so if you could be a doll and grab him for me, I would be super grateful.โ€

He stared blankly at me for several beats before attempting to close the door in my face.

โ€œHey!โ€ I snapped, sticking my foot in the door, and pushing it back open. โ€œRude much?โ€

โ€œI might be new, but Iโ€™m not thick,โ€ he deadpanned. โ€œThereโ€™s no Gerard on the team, princess, so run along.โ€

โ€œExcuseย me?โ€ I narrowed my eyes. โ€œYes, there is. He just ran over two tries for your team,ย Damien.โ€

โ€œNo, thereโ€™s not. I think Iโ€™d know my teammatesโ€™ names. Now fuck off.โ€

My mouth fell open in shock. โ€œWow, you reallyย areย rude.โ€

โ€œHey โ€“ you canโ€™t come in here!โ€ Damien argued, when I pushed at the door and tried to squeeze past. โ€œLads, thereโ€™s a crazy blonde out here. Cover your cocks!โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s number seven on the team, idiot,โ€ I huffed, shoving past rude boy in my bid to get to my destination. โ€œAnd ew! Like I would ever want to look at any of your baby elephant trunks.โ€

โ€œBiggs, your sisterโ€™s on the warpath.โ€

โ€œHey, baby, this elephant trunk expands.โ€

โ€œSure it does, Robbie,โ€ I replied, rolling my eyes. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m sure when it does itโ€™s as easy to find as Whereโ€™s Wally.โ€

โ€œOooh, burn, lad!โ€

โ€œSo, this is what the boysโ€™ changing room is like,โ€ I mused, hands on my hips, as I observed thirty or so teenage boys scrambling to get dressed, while feeling both impressed and jealous of the rugby teamโ€™s top-notch facilities. Holy crap, they even had their own physio room.ย Fancy. โ€œWell, I think itโ€™s fair to say that you all should be ashamed of yourselves,โ€ I added, pegging my nose from the overwhelming stench of teenage boy. โ€œBecause this place is a pigsty!โ€

โ€œWhoa, Claire, this is the boysโ€™ changing room,โ€ Patrick called out, rushing to cover his dignity with a rugby ball. โ€œYou know you canโ€™t come in here, right?โ€

โ€œHi, Patrick!โ€ I made a beeline for him. โ€œSo sorry for the intrusion, but I really need to speak to Gerard.โ€

โ€œHe was late coming up from the pitch. Try the showers,โ€ he replied, using his free hand to point me in the right direction.

โ€œThanks so much.โ€ Smiling, I waved him off. โ€œYouโ€™re the best โ€“ oh, andย niceย ball.โ€

โ€œJesus.โ€

โ€œClaire!โ€ Hugh roared, storming through another doorway only partially dressed in a pair of gray sweats. Yikes, he looked just as angry today as he had been last night. Clearly, sleeping on it hadnโ€™t brightened his mood. โ€œWhat the hell are you doing?โ€

โ€œLooking for Gerard,โ€ I explained with a huff. โ€œAnd that new boy over there was super rude to me,โ€ I added, jabbing a finger in the direction ofย Damien. โ€œHe told me to fuck off.โ€

โ€œYou told my sister to fuck off?โ€ Hughโ€™s attention immediately flicked toย Damien, and I felt an immense amount of pleasure when he turned beetroot red. โ€œIn what world did you assume it was okay to speak to her like that?โ€

โ€œMy bad, Biggs. I didnโ€™t know she was your sister.โ€

โ€œIt wouldnโ€™t matter either way,โ€ Johnny answered, appearing fromย the tall archway that led to the showers in a pair of black boxer shorts. โ€œYouโ€™re new, Cleary, so Iโ€™m going to give you a hall pass this time. But for future reference, we donโ€™t talk to our girls like that. You got that?โ€

โ€œYeah, Iโ€™ve got it.โ€ Rude boyโ€™s face turned an even deeper shade of red. โ€œWonโ€™t happen again, Cap.โ€

Oh boy, it was quite the power trip to be around Johnny Kavanagh. The boy oozed intensity.ย Lucky Shan.

โ€œYeah, Cleary,โ€ I tossed out, feeling brave with the backing of the alpha. โ€œYou see that it doesnโ€™t!โ€ And then, because I was still three years old in the prefrontal cortex of my brain, I poked my tongue out at him for good measure.

โ€œYou have about two minutes before Coach comes in for post-game analysis,โ€ Johnny explained, flicking his attention back to me. โ€œMake it snappy.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re the best captain boss ever!โ€ Patting his ridiculously hard pectoral, I scampered through the archway. โ€œAnd good job winning your game.โ€

Following the sound of running water with a pep in my step, I stopped short when I rounded the corner and came face to back with a naked flanker.

The moment my eyes landed on his bare butt, a high-pitched, โ€œOmigod,โ€ escaped my lips and I quickly slapped a hand over my eyes and backed up against the opposite wall, heart racing violently. โ€œIโ€™m really sorry for what Iโ€™m about to tell you, but I think I just saw your ladder dangling between your legs.โ€

โ€œSo?โ€ A familiar chuckle came from the shower area. โ€œYouโ€™ve seen my ladder before.โ€

My heart raced harder at that. โ€œUh, not from that angle, I havenโ€™t.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s up, Claire-Bear?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve been trying to get ahold of you all day,โ€ I explained, feeling a ridiculous amount of relief at being in his company again. โ€œYou are a hard man to track down, Gerard Gibson.โ€

โ€œI saw you at school.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I corrected, hand still clamped over my eyes, as the damp perspiration on the tiles at my back began to seep into my school uniform. โ€œI waved to you in the hallway between classes, and you waved back. Thatโ€™s not the same thing.โ€ Blowing out a shaky breath, I forced myself to address the elephant in the room. โ€œWhere the hell were you last night? I came over and you were gone. Andย Markย was there!โ€

The sound of flowing water abruptly stopped.

โ€œGerard?โ€ I called out when he didnโ€™t respond. โ€œDid you hear me?โ€

โ€œYeah, I heard you.โ€ His voice was closer now. โ€œAnd yeah, I know.โ€ I felt his hand brush past against my arm, and it caused my entire body to ignite in a hot flush. โ€œSorry.โ€ I felt his hand on my hip, gently steering me to one side. โ€œMy towel is on the hook behind you.โ€

โ€œOkie-dokie,โ€ I squeaked out, feeling my face grow hot from the knowledge that his naked body was so close to me. It was more than just that, though, because I wanted to open my fingers and peek. Not just peek. I wanted toย touch. Remembering how it felt in my room the other night when his big body was pressed against mine and his fingers were deep inside me โ€ฆ

โ€œAll clear.โ€ I felt him gently peel my hand away from my eyes. โ€œThe ladder is safely tucked away.โ€

When I blinked my eyes open, I found that to be regrettably true. The white towel wrapped around his narrow hips was proof to that pudding.

Aw crackers.

Feeling weak, I slumped against the tiles at my back. โ€œSo, Markโ€™s back, huh?โ€

โ€œApparently so.โ€

โ€œYou didnโ€™t know?โ€

โ€œNope,โ€ Gerard replied, resting a hand against the wall at my back. โ€œNo clue.โ€

Breath catching in my throat, I swallowed deeply and offered him a small smile, desperately trying to ignore the heat flooding every inch of my body. โ€œAre you okay?โ€

โ€œOf course.โ€ He smiled, but it didnโ€™t meet his eyes. โ€œIโ€™m always okay.โ€

โ€œYou didnโ€™t come over last night.โ€ I shrugged, feeling helpless. โ€œIt was โ€ฆ โ€ย I didnโ€™t like it.ย โ€œWeird.โ€

โ€œYeah, sorry about that.โ€ Exhaling shakily, Gerard reached up with his free hand and pushed his damp curls off his brow. โ€œYou were dealing with Lizzie, and I, ah, I had to get away.โ€

โ€œSo, whereโ€™d you go?โ€

โ€œCapโ€™s.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€

โ€œYep.โ€

Feeling slightly bereft at his response, I forced another big smile.

He smiled back at me, but again, it didnโ€™t meet his eyes.

Aw crackers.

I didnโ€™t like this. Not one bit. Because Gerard might be physically standing in front of me, with nothing but a towel covering him, but internally he had several layers wrapped around his heart. โ€œTalk to me, Gerard.โ€

โ€œAbout what?โ€

I narrowed my eyes. โ€œAbout what happened last night.โ€

He stared blankly back at me. โ€œWhat about what happened last night?โ€

โ€œUh,ย hello? Lizzie basically attacked you and then you find out your evil stepbrother is back in Ballylaggin.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s all good, Claire-Bear.โ€

โ€œGerard,โ€ I snapped, โ€œI know youโ€™re upset.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not upset.โ€

โ€œYes, you are,โ€ I urged. โ€œYou have to be.โ€

โ€œAnd whyโ€™s that?โ€

โ€œBecauseย Markโ€™s back.โ€

โ€œI honestly couldnโ€™t give a damn, Claire.โ€

โ€œNo, stop.โ€ Shaking my head in frustration, I reached up and knotted my fingers in the silver chain around his neck. โ€œDonโ€™t do that.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t do what?โ€

โ€œAct the fool,โ€ I growled, yanking on his chain so hard he had to lower his face to mine. โ€œDonโ€™t shut me out, Gerard. Weโ€™ve come too far for that.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not trying to do that,โ€ he said gruffly, nose brushing against mine. โ€œIโ€™m just โ€ฆ โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re just?โ€ I pushed, fisting his chain so tightly I thought it might crack in my hand. Inhaling a shaky breath, I pushed off the wall, melding my chest to his. โ€œYouโ€™re just what, Gerard?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re going to get wet,โ€ he noted, hooking an arm around my waist to steady us both.

โ€œDonโ€™t change the subject,โ€ I warned, unwilling to take a step back. โ€œYouโ€™re just what?โ€

โ€œYou know itโ€™s a really bad idea to be in here with me, donโ€™t you?โ€ he asked in a gravelly tone, and I could feelย exactlyย why he would say that growing against my belly. โ€œEspecially since โ€ฆ โ€ His voice trailed off and he shook his head. โ€œThis is just a really,ย reallyย bad idea, Claire-Bear.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t care,โ€ I replied, feeling a little breathless, as my heart continued to try to power drill its way out of my chest to get to his. โ€œWe need to talk, so justย talkย to me, dammit.โ€

โ€œAnd sayย what?โ€ he asked softly, breath fanning my face.

โ€œHow about you start by telling me how you feel?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t feel anything.โ€ He stepped closer, causing my back to hit the wall once more, but this time his body was flush against mine. โ€œNot about Lizzie. Not about him. Not about any of them.โ€ The move seemed to cause a shiver to roll through both of our bodies simultaneously. โ€œI donโ€™t feel a damn thing.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re lying.โ€

โ€œNo, Iโ€™m really not.โ€

โ€œGerard,โ€ I cried out in despair. โ€œPlease!โ€

โ€œPlease what?โ€ he demanded then. โ€œPlease what, Claire? What do you want from me?โ€

โ€œYou!โ€ My chest was heaving against his, my entire body screaming out for him, and I honestly felt like I might die on the mortal spot if heย didnโ€™t put his lips on me. โ€œI want you, Gerard!โ€

โ€œIโ€™m right here.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not what I mean, and you know it,โ€ I strangled out. โ€œI want you to talk to me about how youโ€™re feeling! I want you to open up to me, dammit!โ€

โ€œIย canโ€™t.โ€

Devastation washed over me like a tidal wave. โ€œWhy not?โ€

โ€œBecause I love you too much!โ€ he surprised me by saying. Expelling a pained breath, he dropped his head to rest on my shoulder. โ€œBecause I fuckingย loveย you, Claire Biggs.โ€

The three words hurt to hear because they werenโ€™t what I needed from him in this moment, and the pain in my chest assured me that my devastated body had come to the equally devastating conclusion that these three words were all this boy would ever give me.

โ€œI donโ€™t understand why you act like this,โ€ I croaked out, feeling like a masochist for pushing the same broken narrative. โ€œIโ€™m your best friend, and instead of letting me in, you keep pushing me out.โ€

โ€œClaire.โ€

โ€œNo. No more excuses, Gerard!โ€ Shaking my head, I pushed at his chest and willed him to wake the hell up. โ€œIโ€™m right here, okay? Iโ€™m right here for you.โ€

โ€œI know that.โ€

โ€œThenย doย something!โ€

He didnโ€™t.

Instead, he opened his mouth. โ€œClaire, if you could just โ€ฆ โ€

โ€œNo. Stop!โ€ I shook my head. โ€œI donโ€™t need any more of your excuses, Gerard Gibson.โ€ Chest heaving, I stepped around him and moved for the exit. โ€œI need your truth.โ€
