โGibs, for the last time, stop bleeding spooning me!โ was the first thing I heard my best friend say on Wednesday morning, swiftly followed by the heel of his foot digging into my shin.
โOkay,ย ow,โ I huffed, blinking my eyes open when pain ricocheted up my leg. โThat fucking hurt, Cap. You know I bruise like a peach.โ
โIt was supposed to,โ Johnny grumbled, shaking my arm off before pulling himself up into a sitting position. โSince when have Iย everย given you the impression that Iโm the little spoon in this relationship?โ
โAnd I am?โ
โWell, it isnโt bleeding me!โ
โI canโt help it, okay,โ I huffed, flopping onto my back. โIโm used to cuddling Claire at night.โ
โAnd Iโm used to cuddling Shannon.โ Reaching behind his back, he retrieved a pillow and smacked me upside the head with it. โNot my fucking flanker.โ
โYeah, well, those Lynches are like breeding vessels, so if you think about it, this impromptu sleepover might have just saved your ass from joining Lynchy on his trip down early fatherhood lane.โ
โHold up.โ Johnny narrowed his eyes at me. โDid you just call my girlfriend aย breeding vessel?โ
โShh, donโt be cranky,โ I coaxed, rolling onto my side to snuggle the pillow he tried to maim me with. โYou said it yourself that you and Shan want a bunch of kids when youโre older, so think of it as a compliment.โ
โI donโt know what to think when it comes to the shit that comes out of your mouth, Gibs, I really donโt.โ
โThatโs your problem, Johnny,โ I replied with a yawn. โYou do too much thinking.โ
โAnd you donโt think at all.โ
โYep. Sounds about right.โ
โCare to explain the late-night visit?โ he asked then. โBecause I have to say, Gibs, youโve done a lot of strange things since we first met, but creeping into my bed in the middle of the night is definitely a first.โ
โYeah, sorry about that.โ I offered him a sheepish grin. โI probably shouldโve given you the heads-up first, huh?โ
โWouldโve been nice.โ
Grinning, I said, โWould it sound strange if I told you I get nightmares and you make me feel safe?โ
โOnly a lot,โ Johnny shot back, looking mildly entertained by my antics. โSo, what happened?โ
โNothing much.โ
โDonโt give me that shite,โ he argued with a shake of his head. โDid you have a fight with Claire or something? Sheโs usually your first port of call.โ
โNah, weโre good,โ I replied, stretching out. โBut I was over at her place when the viper showed up, throwing her usual shade at me.โ Shrugging, I added, โBasically, I had to split before I snapped.โ
โJesus Christ.โ Johnny narrowed his eyes. โThat bleeding girl.โ
โYep,โ I agreed with a tired yawn. โOh, but it gets worse.โ
โIโm listening.โ
โSo, I go back to my place after the fight.โ
โYeah?โ
โAnd I walk through the door.โ
โKeep going.โ
โAnd there he is.โ
โHe?โ
โMark.โ
โMark?โ
โMark,โ I repeated, giving my best friend a knowing look.
Confusion filled Johnnyโs eyes for the briefest moment before awareness quickly set in. โOhย shiteย โฆ โ
โYep,โ I replied flatly, feeling my mood darken. โAnd apparently, heโs planning on packing the family up and moving back to Ballylaggin. Fuck my life, huh?โ
โGibs, man, whatโs the story there?โ he asked in a cautious tone. โI know shite went down when I first moved down here, but no one ever talks about it, and Iโve only heard bits and pieces from Feely, Hugh, and Shan.โ
โTrust me, Cap, bits and pieces is all you need to know,โ I muttered, feeling the four walls close around me at the thought. โItโs in the past.โ
โHumor me, lad,โ he pushed, nudging my thigh with his knee. โCome on, Gibs, you know Iโm always on your side when it comes to that girl, no matter what.โ Shrugging, he added, โBut it would be a hell of a lot easier to defend you when I know the whole story.โ
โYou donโt need to defend me, Johnny.โ His words felt like a slap to the face and my entire frame stiffened. โBecause I didnโtย doย anything.โ
โI know, Gibs,โ he agreed calmly. โNever thought for one moment that you did, lad. But when it comes to you and Lizzie, I feel like Iโm walking around with a blindfold on.โ
โIย reallyย donโt want to talk about it,โ I mumbled sleepily, settling deeper into his epic mattress, which I couldnโt even pretend I wasnโt jealous of. In fact, if I could find a way to smuggle it out of the manor and back to my house, I would do it in a heartbeat.ย Thatโs it, lad. Distraction. Good thoughts. Happy thoughts. Block it all out.ย โItโs so fucking pointless and weโll just end up going around in circles.โ
โTry me.โ
โJesus Christ, fine.โ Sitting up, I wiped the sleep from my eyes and slumped against the headboard at my back. โTell me what you already know, and Iโll fill in the rest.โ
โYour ma left your da when you were eight and got with Keith.โ
โI was seven when she threw him out,โ I interjected with a heavy sigh. โBut close enough.โ
โMeanwhile, Keith was a widow when he moved into your gaff with his kid โฆ โ
โMark was no kid,โ I cut him off by saying. โThat prick was fourteen when our parents got together.โ
โOkay, widow Keith moved into your gaff with his teenage son after your parents got divorced,โ Johnny deftly corrected. โIs that about right?โ
โNope, there was no divorce,โ I corrected. โYou couldnโt get divorced in Ireland back then. Mam moved them in while she wasย stillย married to my old man. They didnโt get married untilย afterย my father and Beth drowned.โ
โShite.โ
โYep.โ Bristling, I gestured with my hand for him to continue. โAs you were.โ
โSo, Mark used to go out with Lizzieโs sister โฆ โ
โCaoimhe,โ I filled in.
โCaoimhe,โ he repeated with a grateful nod. โThey went to Tommen together?โ
I nodded stiffly.
โWere they in the same year?โ
โFor a while.โ
โSo, Mark and Caoimhe must be close in age to Shanโs brother, Darren,โ Johnny said, doing some pretty fast fucking math in his head. โI know Darren went to BCS, but they couldโve easily gone to the same primary school together?โ
โI donโt know, lad.โ I shrugged. โI barely knew of the Lynches back then. They didnโt go to my primary school, remember?โ Shrugging, I added, โI barely remember the lads I went to primary school with, let alone anyone else.โ
โBut Keith and Mark are blow-ins, so he obviously didnโt go to primary school in Ballylaggin, but Lizzie, Shan, Joe, Tadhg and Ols all went to Sacred Heart, so Iโm guessing Darren and Caoimhe did, too,โ Johnny muttered, more to himself than me, as he mentally pieced the puzzle of my past together.
โYou know, Cap, when I said tell me what you know, I didnโt mean in this much detail,โ I joked. โChrist, youโd make one hell of a detective.โ
โI like to be thorough,โ he shot back unaffected. โSo, they went out together? Mark and Caoimhe?โ
โPretty much.โ
โAnd you guys already knew each other because of Lizzie and Claire being friends?โ Frowning, he added, โAnd because Caoimhe used to babysit all of you guys when you were kids?โ
โPretty much.โ
โCome on, Gibs,โ he pushed. โGive me something here, will you?โ
โWhat do you want me to say?โ I snapped, feeling claustrophobic.
โMore than the wordsย pretty much.โ
โFine!โ I snapped, running a hand through my hair in frustration. โHow about this; they went out together for a few years. He was a good-for-nothing prick, and she was a fucking eejit for going anywhere near him. If they werenโt causing drama and scenes by breaking up every second weekend, they were fucking on the job like rabbits. Remind you of anyone?โ
โLizzie and Pierce.โ
โTen points to Gryffindor,โ I cheered with a sarcastic clap. โListen, everyone tried to tell her what a piece of shit he was, but she wouldnโt hear a word of it. In Caoimheโs eyes, Mark could do no wrong, and fuck you if you told her otherwise. It went back and forth like that for years, fucking years, Kav, until she clearly came face to face with his true colors.โ Bristling with agitation, I rolled my shoulders in my attempt to stop the shudder racking through me. โAfter she died, a rumor went around town that she left a suicide note for her mother disclosing a rape. The Gardaรญ investigated and found nothing. Not a shred of evidence to support the Young familyโs allegations. Eventually, the investigation was dropped, Mark graduated from Tommen, and left Ballylaggin.โ Blowing out a breath, I gestured aimlessly before saying, โLeaving the rest of us to clean up his mess.โ
โWell, shite.โ
โPretty much.โ
โSo, even though there was no solid proof, Lizzie and her family areย convinced that Caoimhe killed herself because of a sexual assault she endured at the hands of your motherโs husbandโs son?โ
โYes,โ I confirmed with a nod, relieved that he didnโt refer to him asย myย stepbrother.
โAnd Lizzie has it in for you because your mother is still married to his father?โ
โYep.โ I nodded. โThat and the fact that Mam and Keith backed Mark one hundred percent, causing a whole heap of drama between our families.โ
โBut you didnโt?โ
โHellย no!โ I narrowed my eyes. โI tried to warn her years ago, but she wouldnโt hear a word of it.โ
โBut you and Lizzie used to be friends before this?โ
โYep,โ I replied with a nod. โWe all were โ although, she tried her best to turn everyone against me after it happened.โ
โWhat do you mean?โ
โClaire, Feely and Hugh,โ I bit out. โShe wanted them to choose.โ
โBetween you and her?โ
โYep.โ
โBut they refused?โ
โYeah.โ Another nod. โAnd Iโm fairly sure thatโs a lot of the reason why Hugh and Liz barely speak anymore.โ
โShite.โ Johnny was quiet for a long time before asking, โDo you think he did it, Gibs?โ
โWho?โ
โMark.โ
With my heart bucking wildly in my chest, I nodded stiffly.
โJesus,โ my best friend whispered, rubbing his jaw. โAnd now heโs back in town?โ
โYep.โ
โFor two whole months.โ
โYou got it in one.โ
โWhat a clusterfuck.โ
โWell, youโre always welcome to crash here,โ Johnny said, before throwing off the covers and climbing out of bed.
โCheers, Cap,โ I replied, settling back down in his super-sized bed. โLegend.โ
โAnytime, lad.โ Grabbing his phone off the nightstand, he glanced briefly at the screen before stretching. โRight, come on. Itโs only half six. We can get a run in before school.โ
โAre youย mental? The only thing I plan on doing before school is sleeping โ and maybe, having a few of your mamโs pancakes if theyโre on offer.โ
โGet up.โ
โHard pass.โ
โCome on, Gibs, we have a match today.โ
โExactly. I need all the rest I can get.โ
โGibs!โ
โNight, Cap. Love you.โ
Forty minutes later, and I found myself a breathless, wheezing mess at the mercy of a masochistic Dub, with a penchant for sadism when it came to his best friendโs lungs.
โYouโre a monster,โ I strangled out, gasping for air, as I tried to keep up with his inhuman stride. Aside from the fact that it was pissing rain down on top of us, it was still dark outside. โSeriously, Cap. Iโm just about ready to die here, lad.โ
โCome on, Gibs, youโve got this,โ he called over his shoulder. โKeep the heart rate up, lad. Youโre on the last mile.โ
โThatโs what you said three miles ago,โ I wailed, while I contemplated throwing myself over a ditch and letting the cows have me. โAnd I donโt โgot thisโ, Johnny. I donโt โgot thisโ at all.โ
โYes, you do. Come on, lad, the house is just up ahead,โ he called back, trying to motivate me. โAt the top of the hill. One more big push and weโre home.โ
โNo, fuck it, I canโt,โ I called back, feeling every muscle in my legs cramp up. โItโs not worth it. Just go on without me.โ
โIโll ask my ma to make you pancakes.โ
Dammit.
โI want sugar and lemon juice, and I donโt want to hear a word about wasted calories.โ
โDeal.โ
โFine,โ I bit out, heaving my body up the steep country road that led to the manor. โThe things I do for my stomach.โ
