Chapter no 37

Taming 7 (Boys of Tommen, 5)

โ€œGibs, for the last time, stop bleeding spooning me!โ€ was the first thing I heard my best friend say on Wednesday morning, swiftly followed by the heel of his foot digging into my shin.

โ€œOkay,ย ow,โ€ I huffed, blinking my eyes open when pain ricocheted up my leg. โ€œThat fucking hurt, Cap. You know I bruise like a peach.โ€

โ€œIt was supposed to,โ€ Johnny grumbled, shaking my arm off before pulling himself up into a sitting position. โ€œSince when have Iย everย given you the impression that Iโ€™m the little spoon in this relationship?โ€

โ€œAnd I am?โ€

โ€œWell, it isnโ€™t bleeding me!โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t help it, okay,โ€ I huffed, flopping onto my back. โ€œIโ€™m used to cuddling Claire at night.โ€

โ€œAnd Iโ€™m used to cuddling Shannon.โ€ Reaching behind his back, he retrieved a pillow and smacked me upside the head with it. โ€œNot my fucking flanker.โ€

โ€œYeah, well, those Lynches are like breeding vessels, so if you think about it, this impromptu sleepover might have just saved your ass from joining Lynchy on his trip down early fatherhood lane.โ€

โ€œHold up.โ€ Johnny narrowed his eyes at me. โ€œDid you just call my girlfriend aย breeding vessel?โ€

โ€œShh, donโ€™t be cranky,โ€ I coaxed, rolling onto my side to snuggle the pillow he tried to maim me with. โ€œYou said it yourself that you and Shan want a bunch of kids when youโ€™re older, so think of it as a compliment.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know what to think when it comes to the shit that comes out of your mouth, Gibs, I really donโ€™t.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s your problem, Johnny,โ€ I replied with a yawn. โ€œYou do too much thinking.โ€

โ€œAnd you donโ€™t think at all.โ€

โ€œYep. Sounds about right.โ€

โ€œCare to explain the late-night visit?โ€ he asked then. โ€œBecause I have to say, Gibs, youโ€™ve done a lot of strange things since we first met, but creeping into my bed in the middle of the night is definitely a first.โ€

โ€œYeah, sorry about that.โ€ I offered him a sheepish grin. โ€œI probably shouldโ€™ve given you the heads-up first, huh?โ€

โ€œWouldโ€™ve been nice.โ€

Grinning, I said, โ€œWould it sound strange if I told you I get nightmares and you make me feel safe?โ€

โ€œOnly a lot,โ€ Johnny shot back, looking mildly entertained by my antics. โ€œSo, what happened?โ€

โ€œNothing much.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t give me that shite,โ€ he argued with a shake of his head. โ€œDid you have a fight with Claire or something? Sheโ€™s usually your first port of call.โ€

โ€œNah, weโ€™re good,โ€ I replied, stretching out. โ€œBut I was over at her place when the viper showed up, throwing her usual shade at me.โ€ Shrugging, I added, โ€œBasically, I had to split before I snapped.โ€

โ€œJesus Christ.โ€ Johnny narrowed his eyes. โ€œThat bleeding girl.โ€

โ€œYep,โ€ I agreed with a tired yawn. โ€œOh, but it gets worse.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m listening.โ€

โ€œSo, I go back to my place after the fight.โ€

โ€œYeah?โ€

โ€œAnd I walk through the door.โ€

โ€œKeep going.โ€

โ€œAnd there he is.โ€

โ€œHe?โ€

โ€œMark.โ€

โ€œMark?โ€

โ€œMark,โ€ I repeated, giving my best friend a knowing look.

Confusion filled Johnnyโ€™s eyes for the briefest moment before awareness quickly set in. โ€œOhย shiteย โ€ฆ โ€

โ€œYep,โ€ I replied flatly, feeling my mood darken. โ€œAnd apparently, heโ€™s planning on packing the family up and moving back to Ballylaggin. Fuck my life, huh?โ€

โ€œGibs, man, whatโ€™s the story there?โ€ he asked in a cautious tone. โ€œI know shite went down when I first moved down here, but no one ever talks about it, and Iโ€™ve only heard bits and pieces from Feely, Hugh, and Shan.โ€

โ€œTrust me, Cap, bits and pieces is all you need to know,โ€ I muttered, feeling the four walls close around me at the thought. โ€œItโ€™s in the past.โ€

โ€œHumor me, lad,โ€ he pushed, nudging my thigh with his knee. โ€œCome on, Gibs, you know Iโ€™m always on your side when it comes to that girl, no matter what.โ€ Shrugging, he added, โ€œBut it would be a hell of a lot easier to defend you when I know the whole story.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t need to defend me, Johnny.โ€ His words felt like a slap to the face and my entire frame stiffened. โ€œBecause I didnโ€™tย doย anything.โ€

โ€œI know, Gibs,โ€ he agreed calmly. โ€œNever thought for one moment that you did, lad. But when it comes to you and Lizzie, I feel like Iโ€™m walking around with a blindfold on.โ€

โ€œIย reallyย donโ€™t want to talk about it,โ€ I mumbled sleepily, settling deeper into his epic mattress, which I couldnโ€™t even pretend I wasnโ€™t jealous of. In fact, if I could find a way to smuggle it out of the manor and back to my house, I would do it in a heartbeat.ย Thatโ€™s it, lad. Distraction. Good thoughts. Happy thoughts. Block it all out.ย โ€œItโ€™s so fucking pointless and weโ€™ll just end up going around in circles.โ€

โ€œTry me.โ€

โ€œJesus Christ, fine.โ€ Sitting up, I wiped the sleep from my eyes and slumped against the headboard at my back. โ€œTell me what you already know, and Iโ€™ll fill in the rest.โ€

โ€œYour ma left your da when you were eight and got with Keith.โ€

โ€œI was seven when she threw him out,โ€ I interjected with a heavy sigh. โ€œBut close enough.โ€

โ€œMeanwhile, Keith was a widow when he moved into your gaff with his kid โ€ฆ โ€

โ€œMark was no kid,โ€ I cut him off by saying. โ€œThat prick was fourteen when our parents got together.โ€

โ€œOkay, widow Keith moved into your gaff with his teenage son after your parents got divorced,โ€ Johnny deftly corrected. โ€œIs that about right?โ€

โ€œNope, there was no divorce,โ€ I corrected. โ€œYou couldnโ€™t get divorced in Ireland back then. Mam moved them in while she wasย stillย married to my old man. They didnโ€™t get married untilย afterย my father and Beth drowned.โ€

โ€œShite.โ€

โ€œYep.โ€ Bristling, I gestured with my hand for him to continue. โ€œAs you were.โ€

โ€œSo, Mark used to go out with Lizzieโ€™s sister โ€ฆ โ€

โ€œCaoimhe,โ€ I filled in.

โ€œCaoimhe,โ€ he repeated with a grateful nod. โ€œThey went to Tommen together?โ€

I nodded stiffly.

โ€œWere they in the same year?โ€

โ€œFor a while.โ€

โ€œSo, Mark and Caoimhe must be close in age to Shanโ€™s brother, Darren,โ€ Johnny said, doing some pretty fast fucking math in his head. โ€œI know Darren went to BCS, but they couldโ€™ve easily gone to the same primary school together?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know, lad.โ€ I shrugged. โ€œI barely knew of the Lynches back then. They didnโ€™t go to my primary school, remember?โ€ Shrugging, I added, โ€œI barely remember the lads I went to primary school with, let alone anyone else.โ€

โ€œBut Keith and Mark are blow-ins, so he obviously didnโ€™t go to primary school in Ballylaggin, but Lizzie, Shan, Joe, Tadhg and Ols all went to Sacred Heart, so Iโ€™m guessing Darren and Caoimhe did, too,โ€ Johnny muttered, more to himself than me, as he mentally pieced the puzzle of my past together.

โ€œYou know, Cap, when I said tell me what you know, I didnโ€™t mean in this much detail,โ€ I joked. โ€œChrist, youโ€™d make one hell of a detective.โ€

โ€œI like to be thorough,โ€ he shot back unaffected. โ€œSo, they went out together? Mark and Caoimhe?โ€

โ€œPretty much.โ€

โ€œAnd you guys already knew each other because of Lizzie and Claire being friends?โ€ Frowning, he added, โ€œAnd because Caoimhe used to babysit all of you guys when you were kids?โ€

โ€œPretty much.โ€

โ€œCome on, Gibs,โ€ he pushed. โ€œGive me something here, will you?โ€

โ€œWhat do you want me to say?โ€ I snapped, feeling claustrophobic.

โ€œMore than the wordsย pretty much.โ€

โ€œFine!โ€ I snapped, running a hand through my hair in frustration. โ€œHow about this; they went out together for a few years. He was a good-for-nothing prick, and she was a fucking eejit for going anywhere near him. If they werenโ€™t causing drama and scenes by breaking up every second weekend, they were fucking on the job like rabbits. Remind you of anyone?โ€

โ€œLizzie and Pierce.โ€

โ€œTen points to Gryffindor,โ€ I cheered with a sarcastic clap. โ€œListen, everyone tried to tell her what a piece of shit he was, but she wouldnโ€™t hear a word of it. In Caoimheโ€™s eyes, Mark could do no wrong, and fuck you if you told her otherwise. It went back and forth like that for years, fucking years, Kav, until she clearly came face to face with his true colors.โ€ Bristling with agitation, I rolled my shoulders in my attempt to stop the shudder racking through me. โ€œAfter she died, a rumor went around town that she left a suicide note for her mother disclosing a rape. The Gardaรญ investigated and found nothing. Not a shred of evidence to support the Young familyโ€™s allegations. Eventually, the investigation was dropped, Mark graduated from Tommen, and left Ballylaggin.โ€ Blowing out a breath, I gestured aimlessly before saying, โ€œLeaving the rest of us to clean up his mess.โ€

โ€œWell, shite.โ€

โ€œPretty much.โ€

โ€œSo, even though there was no solid proof, Lizzie and her family areย convinced that Caoimhe killed herself because of a sexual assault she endured at the hands of your motherโ€™s husbandโ€™s son?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ I confirmed with a nod, relieved that he didnโ€™t refer to him asย myย stepbrother.

โ€œAnd Lizzie has it in for you because your mother is still married to his father?โ€

โ€œYep.โ€ I nodded. โ€œThat and the fact that Mam and Keith backed Mark one hundred percent, causing a whole heap of drama between our families.โ€

โ€œBut you didnโ€™t?โ€

โ€œHellย no!โ€ I narrowed my eyes. โ€œI tried to warn her years ago, but she wouldnโ€™t hear a word of it.โ€

โ€œBut you and Lizzie used to be friends before this?โ€

โ€œYep,โ€ I replied with a nod. โ€œWe all were โ€“ although, she tried her best to turn everyone against me after it happened.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

โ€œClaire, Feely and Hugh,โ€ I bit out. โ€œShe wanted them to choose.โ€

โ€œBetween you and her?โ€

โ€œYep.โ€

โ€œBut they refused?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ Another nod. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m fairly sure thatโ€™s a lot of the reason why Hugh and Liz barely speak anymore.โ€

โ€œShite.โ€ Johnny was quiet for a long time before asking, โ€œDo you think he did it, Gibs?โ€

โ€œWho?โ€

โ€œMark.โ€

With my heart bucking wildly in my chest, I nodded stiffly.

โ€œJesus,โ€ my best friend whispered, rubbing his jaw. โ€œAnd now heโ€™s back in town?โ€

โ€œYep.โ€

โ€œFor two whole months.โ€

โ€œYou got it in one.โ€

โ€œWhat a clusterfuck.โ€

โ€œAgreed.โ€

โ€œWell, youโ€™re always welcome to crash here,โ€ Johnny said, before throwing off the covers and climbing out of bed.

โ€œCheers, Cap,โ€ I replied, settling back down in his super-sized bed. โ€œLegend.โ€

โ€œAnytime, lad.โ€ Grabbing his phone off the nightstand, he glanced briefly at the screen before stretching. โ€œRight, come on. Itโ€™s only half six. We can get a run in before school.โ€

โ€œAre youย mental? The only thing I plan on doing before school is sleeping โ€“ and maybe, having a few of your mamโ€™s pancakes if theyโ€™re on offer.โ€

โ€œGet up.โ€

โ€œHard pass.โ€

โ€œCome on, Gibs, we have a match today.โ€

โ€œExactly. I need all the rest I can get.โ€

โ€œGibs!โ€

โ€œNight, Cap. Love you.โ€

Forty minutes later, and I found myself a breathless, wheezing mess at the mercy of a masochistic Dub, with a penchant for sadism when it came to his best friendโ€™s lungs.

โ€œYouโ€™re a monster,โ€ I strangled out, gasping for air, as I tried to keep up with his inhuman stride. Aside from the fact that it was pissing rain down on top of us, it was still dark outside. โ€œSeriously, Cap. Iโ€™m just about ready to die here, lad.โ€

โ€œCome on, Gibs, youโ€™ve got this,โ€ he called over his shoulder. โ€œKeep the heart rate up, lad. Youโ€™re on the last mile.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what you said three miles ago,โ€ I wailed, while I contemplated throwing myself over a ditch and letting the cows have me. โ€œAnd I donโ€™t โ€˜got thisโ€™, Johnny. I donโ€™t โ€˜got thisโ€™ at all.โ€

โ€œYes, you do. Come on, lad, the house is just up ahead,โ€ he called back, trying to motivate me. โ€œAt the top of the hill. One more big push and weโ€™re home.โ€

โ€œNo, fuck it, I canโ€™t,โ€ I called back, feeling every muscle in my legs cramp up. โ€œItโ€™s not worth it. Just go on without me.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll ask my ma to make you pancakes.โ€

Dammit.

โ€œI want sugar and lemon juice, and I donโ€™t want to hear a word about wasted calories.โ€

โ€œDeal.โ€

โ€œFine,โ€ I bit out, heaving my body up the steep country road that led to the manor. โ€œThe things I do for my stomach.โ€
