Chapter no 28

Taming 7 (Boys of Tommen, 5)

Lizzieโ€™s eavesdropping skills were put to the test at big break when I was abruptly stopped in the school corridor on my way to the lunch hall.

โ€œClaire, can I have a word?โ€ Jamie asked, surprising me by stepping in front of me mid-run and causing me to crash into his chest with a loudย oof. โ€œJesus, sorry about that,โ€ he grunted, hooking an arm around my waist when I staggered backwards from the force with which we collided. โ€œAre you alright?โ€

โ€œYep, yep, all good,โ€ I replied with a nervous cackle, quickly steadying myself before stepping out of his hold. โ€œI was just racing to make sure all the chili wasnโ€™t taken by the rugby team.โ€ Blowing a rogue curl out of my face, I smiled up at him and asked, โ€œWhatโ€™s up?โ€ even though I knew full well what wasย up.

โ€œOh shit, if thatโ€™s the case, do you want to talk as we walk?โ€ he offered, gesturing towards the lunch hall. โ€œI donโ€™t want you to lose out on your lunch.โ€

โ€œThanks,โ€ I replied with a smile, falling into step beside him, all the while trying my best not to be weird. God only knew why but I had the strongest urge to make farm animal noises in this moment. Probably because I was epically nervous and had no clue how to navigate these unchartered waters.

โ€œSo, listen, I was thinking about it a lot lately, and I was hoping I might be able to take you out again some time.โ€

And there it was.

Lizzie was dead on the money.

Jamie did want to go out with me again.

Aw crackers.

โ€œTake me out?โ€ I asked, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible,ย when we entered the lunch hall.ย Baa. Baa. Baa.ย Dammit, why couldnโ€™t I stop thinking about sheep noises? โ€œOut where?โ€

โ€œThe cinema? Or maybe for a drink? Whatever you want,โ€ he offered, joining the queue for hot food with me. โ€œI know it didnโ€™t exactly end well the last time, and I was a fucking eejit back then, but I really think we could have something good.โ€

Purposefully keeping my attention off the rugby table, I focused on the boy speaking to me instead. โ€œSomething good?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ Jamie nodded and smiled. โ€œIf youโ€™re willing to give me another chance.โ€

It was a cute smile.

He was a good-looking boy with dark hair and pretty brown eyes. He was tall enough to have a couple of inches on me, and he smelled fantastic, which was always a huge bonus in my eyes. He even had a tiny dimple in his chin and an adorable, crooked smile.

But he wasnโ€™t Gerard.

Feeling hesitant and uncertain, I opened my mouth to respond, but Lizzie got in there first.

โ€œShe would love to!โ€ Joining us in the lunch line, she draped an arm around my shoulder and beamed. โ€œIsnโ€™t that right, Claire?โ€

โ€œLizzie,โ€ I whisper-hissed, flicking an anxious glance in the direction of the rugby table. Immediately, my eyes sought Gerard out, and when they locked on his, I could feel the tension emanating from him.

Aw crap.

โ€œListen, if you still have something going on with Gibson, thatโ€™s fine,โ€ Jamie said, quick to catch on. โ€œJust tell me now because I donโ€™t want to step on anyoneโ€™s toes here.โ€

โ€œShe doesnโ€™t,โ€ Lizzie responded before I could. โ€œTheyโ€™re just friends.โ€ Tightening her arm around me, she smiled harder. โ€œIsnโ€™t that right, Claire?โ€

โ€œUh โ€ฆ โ€ I glanced back to the table once more, but this time Gerard wasnโ€™t looking at me. In fact, he had his back to me, giving Johnny his full attention. โ€œRight?โ€

โ€œOkay, good.โ€ Jamie sighed in relief, smile reappearing now the coast was apparently clear. โ€œSo, what do you think?โ€

โ€œAbout what?โ€ I asked, distracted by the table behind me. Namely the boy sitting at said table.

โ€œGoing out with me sometime?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™ll have to think about it.โ€ Appearing out of thin air, Shannon slipped under Jamieโ€™s arm and caught ahold of my hand. โ€œThank you so much for the offer,โ€ she added, pulling both Lizzie and me away. โ€œIt was very thoughtful. Claire will get back to you in the next five working days.โ€

Jamie frowned in confusion. โ€œUh โ€ฆ okay?โ€

โ€œBye,โ€ Shannon called back.

โ€œYeah, bye,โ€ I laughed, waving after him as I let my little friend lead me away.

โ€œThe next five working days?โ€ Lizzie huffed, trailing after us. โ€œWhat the hell, Shan?โ€

โ€œIt was all I could think of,โ€ Shannon squeezed out, red-faced, as we hurried over to the table we used to sit at for some girl talk before we joined the rugby table. โ€œClaire looked so uncomfortable back there, and I just, I donโ€™t know, I felt like I needed to buy her some time.โ€

โ€œThat was epic,โ€ I choked out through fits of laughter, thrilled with her intrusion. โ€œFive working days.โ€ I snorted. โ€œYou sounded like my personal secretary.โ€

โ€œSo, youโ€™re not mad at me?โ€ Shannon asked, looking up at me with nervous blue eyes. โ€œI didnโ€™t overstep?โ€

โ€œAre you crazy?โ€ I reached across the table and snagged her hand. โ€œShan, Iโ€™m beyond grateful. That was so awkward.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œReally, really.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ My bestie sagged in relief. โ€œThank God.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m mad,โ€ Lizzie chimed in, holding a hand up.

โ€œYouโ€™re always mad.โ€ I rolled my eyes. โ€œWhatโ€™s new?โ€

โ€œClaire, that was your perfect chance.โ€ Leaning back in her chair,ย Lizzie folded her arms across her chest and glowered. โ€œJamieโ€™s a nice boy. You could do a lot worse.โ€

โ€œThen you go out with him,โ€ I shot back.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to go out with him.โ€

โ€œYeah, well, neither do I,โ€ I laughed, completely unaffected by her incessant probing.

โ€œOnly because youโ€™re wasting your life waiting around forย him,โ€ she grumbled, gaze flicking to the rugby table. โ€œOh, for Christโ€™s sake, what is wrong with the big eejit now?โ€

โ€œI think he saw Jamie asking Claire out,โ€ Shannon offered, gesturing across the room to where Gerard was glaring at his uneaten lunch like it had mortally offended him. โ€œHe looks so sad.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s not sad, Shan,โ€ Lizzie explained with a frustrated sigh. โ€œHeโ€™s sulking.โ€

โ€œSulking?โ€ I turned around in my seat and watched as Johnny tried to coax Gerard with a spoon of yoghurt. โ€œOh god, heย doesย look sad.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ Lizzie agreed hotly. โ€œBut only because another boy dared to play with his toy.โ€

โ€œHey,โ€ I warned, smile fading. โ€œDonโ€™t call me a toy.โ€

โ€œWhy not? Thatโ€™s exactly what you are to him.โ€

โ€œAs opposed to you using me back there to hurt him?โ€ I shot back, feeling a surge of heat rise up in my belly. Contrary to my appearance, I was no doll, and I had no intention of being used in Lizzieโ€™s game to get one up on her nemesis. โ€œBecause I know what you were trying to do back there.โ€

โ€œI was trying toย helpย you.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t fight, guys,โ€ Shannon admonished quietly. โ€œCome on. Weโ€™re all friends here.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t need you to help me,โ€ I argued back, ignoring Shannonโ€™s attempt to diffuse the situation. โ€œIโ€™m perfectly capable of navigating my own love life, thank you very much.โ€

โ€œFine.โ€ Lizzie rolled her eyes unapologetically. โ€œDo whatever you want, Claire.โ€

Sometimes, I wished I never started speaking to her after she got with my brother. At least that way, when they ended it would have been over. But I felt horrible for thinking that way. Especially when the girl Iโ€™d grown up with from the age of five to thirteen had been so amazing. We had eight years of pure friendship before everything went to hell. I couldnโ€™t erase that, and I didnโ€™t want to.

โ€œThank you,โ€ I replied with forced cheer in my tone. โ€œI intend to.โ€
