Chapter no 27

Taming 7 (Boys of Tommen, 5)

Raging. I was absolutelyย ragingย and no amount of fresh air in the school car park with Lynchy, or coddling from Kav could bring my mood out of the darkness.

โ€œJust walk away, Gibs,โ€ Johnny instructed for what had to be the fiftieth time, as he hung slightly back from where I was standing and barked orders like the dutiful captain he was. โ€œWhenever that girl tries to start drama with you, lad. Donโ€™t react and walk away.โ€

โ€œI can handle the viper, Kav,โ€ I shot back, taking a furious drag of my cigarette. โ€œSheโ€™s the least of my worries right now.โ€

It was the truth. Nothing Lizzie ever said or did could prepare my body for the punch to the solar plexus it received upon hearing theย goodย news.

โ€œFucking Jamie Kelleher,โ€ I bit out, still reeling, as I tried to get a handle on my emotions only to fail miserably. โ€œI hate him, Cap. I really fucking hate that spotty-faced swot.โ€

โ€œI know you do, Gibs,โ€ Johnny soothed in agreement. โ€œMe, too, lad.โ€

โ€œGood-for-nothing brainiac,โ€ I continued to rant, growing more incensed by the second. โ€œWhy her?โ€ Anger bristled inside of me as I allowed my mind to linger and dwell. As I drove myself mental from overthinking. โ€œWhy?โ€

Jamie didnโ€™t know Claire. Not really. Not at fucking all. He didnโ€™t know a damn thing about her love of fashion or her prized collection of stuffed animals. He had zero insight into her obsession with Johnny Depp, nor had he any inkling of the letter she wrote to Leonardo DiCaprio when she was seven, asking him to visit Ballylaggin. I was the one who knew her small parts, the insignificant oversights that made up the best parts of her personality. I was also the one who rescued herย from that noisy bastard of a bull in the field behind Johnnyโ€™s place when we were kids. I was the one that took the shocks off the electric fence, so she didnโ€™t have to. I was the one who spent every waking hour of my life not only adoring her but protecting her with my life. Not Jamie fucking Kelleher!

Leaning against an expensive-looking parked Mercedes, Joey took another drag of his cigarette, observing my meltdown unfolding around him like a caged lion would; slightly bored and momentarily contained, but absolutely lethal if provoked.

I knew he wasnโ€™t much older than me, but I never felt like I was on the same playing field as Shannonโ€™s brother. He had an old head on his shoulders, a lot like my bestie, but he had a jaded element to him that wasnโ€™t present in Shannon or the younger boys. Christ, it didnโ€™t even seem to be present in Darren. An element that expressed that he had felt every one of his eighteen spins around the sun, and it had weathered him to the point that he was an old man in a teenagerโ€™s body. I mean, he was a father, dammit. He was an actual dad to an actual human being. That alone blew my mind.

โ€œWhat I donโ€™t understand is why youโ€™re not with her already,โ€ Joey finally joined in the conversation by saying in a lazy tone.

โ€œWho?โ€ I gaped at him in horror. โ€œLizzie?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ Joey replied, tone laced with sarcasm. โ€œBecause that makes sense.โ€

โ€œHe was referring to Claire,โ€ Johnny interjected with an expectant look. โ€œAnd donโ€™t waste your breath, Lynchy, because Iโ€™ve been saying the same bleeding thing for years, and itโ€™s still falling on deaf ears.โ€

โ€œBecause itโ€™s not the right time,โ€ I ground out, feeling my body break out in a cold sweat at the thought. โ€œIโ€™ve already told you a thousand times, Kav, not everyone wants to settle down in secondary school.โ€

โ€œExcept that you do,โ€ Johnny pointed out in the know-it-all tone of his.

โ€œHowโ€™d you figure that one?โ€

โ€œWith her, you do,โ€ he stated calmly. โ€œBecause you love the bones ofย that girl and this sour mood that youโ€™re sporting is directly related to the fact that another fella is planning on asking her out.โ€

Hit the nail on the head, why donโ€™t you?

โ€œGive it a rest, Brains,โ€ I grumbled, tossing my cigarette butt away.

โ€œAnd youโ€™re in serious risk of losing said girl if you donโ€™t pull your finger out of your hole and start grafting,โ€ my best friend continued, not giving an inch.

โ€œAgreed,โ€ his future brother-in-law offered with a shrug. โ€œFrom where Iโ€™m standing, sheโ€™s yours to lose, Gussie.โ€

โ€œExactly,โ€ Johnny confirmed, throwing his hands up in exasperation. โ€œBecause whether you want to acknowledge it or not, she wonโ€™t wait around forever, Gibs.โ€

โ€œTrue that,โ€ Joey offered with a grimace. โ€œYou donโ€™t want to be the third wheel, lad.โ€

โ€œSo, my advice to you, as your best friend, is to go for it,โ€ Johnny pushed, blue eyes locked on mine. โ€œCome on, Gibs, youโ€™ve never been one to worry about throwing caution to the wind in any other aspect of your life.โ€

No, because no other aspect of my life was as important asย her.

โ€œJust get your girl, lad, and be happy,โ€ he urged, closing the space between us to clamp my shoulders. An act of enthusiasm, no doubt. โ€œWhat have you got to lose?โ€

More than you know.

More than I can bear.

โ€œBecause Iโ€™m not in a hurry!โ€ I tossed back, knowing my argument was weak as shit, but I didnโ€™t have anything else. They didnโ€™t get it. How the hell could they? โ€œWe donโ€™t all bulldoze, Jonathan! And we donโ€™t all mark our turf with a baby, Joseph.โ€ I cast a knowing glance at the pair of assholes doling out words of wisdom like they were the messiahs of pussy. โ€œSome of us take our time when making life-altering decisions!โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re soย lazy!โ€ Johnny challenged, sounding just as frustrated with me as I was with the conversation. โ€œClaire is going to move on, Gibs, and youโ€™re going to lose your shot, lad.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t give me that judge-y look,โ€ I warned, breaking out of his hold to point a finger in his face. โ€œI donโ€™t need anyone elseโ€™s opinions on my love life, thank you very much.โ€

โ€œMorning, boys,โ€ an achingly familiar voice purred. I turned around to see Dee locking the driverโ€™s side of her car nearby, and I swear to Christ, I could have wept.ย What bloody timing.

โ€œMorning, Dee,โ€ Johnny acknowledged politely, while he not so discreetly elbowed me in the ribs like I wasnโ€™t already fully aware of the woman. โ€œNice weather.โ€

โ€œNot as wet as I like,โ€ she tossed back with a heavy dollop of flirtation. โ€œHow are my favorite boys?โ€

โ€œThe fuck?โ€ Joey whisper-hissed, clearly noting how inappropriate her behavior was. โ€œIsnโ€™t she office admin?โ€

โ€œYep, and yep,โ€ Johnny replied, nudging me again. โ€œSheโ€™s the schoolโ€™s receptionist.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a long story,โ€ I muttered under my breath, covering my words with an exaggerated cough. โ€œIโ€™ll tell you later.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t think I want to know, Gus.โ€ With a shake of his head, Joey pushed off the car he was leaning against and headed back towards the main building. โ€œNot my monkeys. Not my circus.โ€

Wise decision.

Wise fucking man.

With a stack of paperwork in her arms, Dee shimmied towards us, all shaking hips and bouncy tits.

Again, I felt nothing.

Fuck.

โ€œHow was your weekend, boys?โ€

โ€œAll good,โ€ Johnny replied, taking a safe step back from who he privately referred to asย Cougar-Dee. โ€œHow was yours?โ€

โ€œBoring,โ€ she replied, taking a step closer, blue eyes locked on my face. โ€œI was alone in my house all weekend.โ€

โ€œYeah, that sounds pretty boring,โ€ Johnny answered for both of us. Catching ahold of the back of my shirt, he pulled me backwards withย him. โ€œWell, we better be getting to class,โ€ he said, tone as polite as ever, as he hauled me out of harmโ€™s way. โ€œHave a good day, Dee.โ€

โ€œBye, boys,โ€ she called after us. โ€œDonโ€™t be afraid to pop into the office if either one of you need anything.โ€

โ€œWill do,โ€ he tossed over his shoulder, as he steered us both towards the main entrance at lightning speed.

โ€œJesus, whereโ€™s the fire?โ€ I huffed, breaking out of his hold before I had to break into a run to keep up with the overgrown bastard. โ€œSlow down.โ€

โ€œWe need to talk about that.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œCougar-Dee,โ€ Johnny whisper-hissed, as he yanked the door open and shoved me inside. โ€œWhatโ€™s happening there?โ€

โ€œYou mean today?โ€ My brows shot up in surprise. โ€œI just saw her in the car park, same as you.โ€

โ€œYou know thatโ€™s not what I mean,โ€ he growled. โ€œChrist, Gibs, sheโ€™s almost thirty, lad.โ€

โ€œActually, sheโ€™s more like twenty-four.โ€

He paused in the doorway to gape at me. โ€œNo fucking way.โ€

โ€œHand on heart. She was in the same year as Caoimhe Young,โ€ I offered with a nod. โ€œItโ€™s the makeup โ€“ and the sunbed.โ€

โ€œMore proof that sunscreen is invaluable,โ€ he grumbled, pushing us both inside. โ€œWhatever. Listen, I think we need to have a proper talk about her. I should have said something about this a long time ago,โ€ he continued, walking us through the corridor. โ€œBut to be honest, I was so stuck in my own head that I didnโ€™t give it a second thought.โ€

โ€œGive what a second thought?โ€ I asked, letting him lead me into the empty lunch hall. โ€œWhat in the name of God are you on about, Kav?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve been doing a lot of growing up since Shannon and the boys came to stay with us, and it got me thinking about right and wrong.โ€ Taking his seat on his throne at the end of the rugby table, he drummedย his fingers on the table, clearly unnerved. โ€œAnd this is wrong, lad. So fucking wrong.โ€

โ€œCare to fill in the blanks here, Cap?โ€ I asked, dropping into my usual seat opposite him. โ€œBecause Iโ€™m kind of stumped.โ€

โ€œDee, lad,โ€ Johnny repeated, pushing his hands through his hair.

โ€œYeah,โ€ I drawled slowly. โ€œWhat about her?โ€

Bristling with tension, he looked around us before leaning in close and whispering, โ€œI think sheโ€™s been grooming you, lad.โ€

โ€œGrooming me?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€ Eyes wide, he nodded eagerly. โ€œGrooming you.โ€

I stared blankly at him for a long beat before bursting out laughing. โ€œGet a fucking handle on yourself, Johnny.โ€

โ€œGibs,โ€ he urged, โ€œIโ€™m being serious here.โ€

โ€œSo am I,โ€ I laughed. โ€œDonโ€™t get all high and mighty with me because youโ€™ve got a girlfriend now.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not what Iโ€™m doing, lad.โ€

โ€œAnd donโ€™t fucking judge me,โ€ I added, sitting up. โ€œIโ€™ve done a lot of favors for you that resulted in me owingย favorsย to that woman.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what horrifies me,โ€ he snapped. โ€œItโ€™s wrong, Gibs. This is all wrong. Itโ€™s a consent issue.โ€

I gaped at him. โ€œConsent?โ€

โ€œGibs,โ€ he snapped, leaning over the table. โ€œThat woman has been fucking around with you since we were fourth year.โ€ Shaking his head, he bit out, โ€œSince you wereย fifteen.โ€

โ€œNow, hold the hell up,โ€ I snapped, feeling myself bristle with defensiveness. โ€œFirst off, I havenโ€™t touched that woman since I got my ladder piercing back in fifth year โ€“ not that itโ€™s any of your business, but I havenโ€™t. Not one goddamn time. And, again, not that itโ€™s any of your business, but I have no plans to change that.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ His visibly sagged in relief. โ€œAt least that.โ€

โ€œAnd second,โ€ I continued, feeling pissed, โ€œI never once forced her to do anything, if thatโ€™s what youโ€™re getting at.โ€ Panic clawed at my gut as I glared at my best friend. โ€œI would neverย forceย anyone!โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not talking aboutย herย giving consent, Gibs,โ€ Johnny argued, dragging a hand through his dark hair in obvious frustration. โ€œIโ€™m talking aboutย you, lad.โ€

I stared in confusion, trying and failing to absorb the meaning behind his words. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œSex, Gibs,โ€ Johnny groaned, looking comically distressed. โ€œYou know if she fucked you back then, itโ€™s classed as statutory rape.โ€

โ€œWhat in the โ€ฆ โ€ I shook my head and pressed a fist to my mouth, trying my hardest to find the words to deal with my best friendโ€™s latest theory of madness. Dee was exactly what I needed in a time when I didnโ€™t know what I needed, but there was no point in trying to explain that to Johnny. Because, in all honesty, how could I expect him to understand when I didnโ€™t understand it myself? โ€œNo. Nope. No. I cannot deal with your overthinking โ€“ not to mentionย hypocriticalย โ€“ brain this early on a Monday morning.โ€

โ€œGibs โ€ฆ โ€

โ€œHow many older women did you fuck when you werenโ€™t supposed to?โ€ I demanded. โ€œBefore you decided to hang up your boots and throw your cards in with Little Shannon.โ€

โ€œToo many,โ€ he wholeheartedly admitted. โ€œToo goddamn many, and thatโ€™s what Iโ€™m trying to say here, Gibsโ€”โ€

โ€œWell, thatโ€™s one more than me!โ€ Throwing my hands up in defeat, I shook my head and fought the urge to both laugh and scream. โ€œBecause I never fucked her, Johnny!โ€ Huffing out a breath, I begrudgingly added, โ€œI just canoodled her.โ€

โ€œAnd canoodling in your worlds consists of?โ€

โ€œWhat does it mean in your world?โ€

โ€œHumor me, Gibs.โ€

Everything for her and nothing for me.ย I folded my arms across my chest and shrugged. โ€œListen, it was oral, okay, just a little oral and heavy petting. Fucking sue me for taking the chance of a lifetime.โ€

โ€œYou swear nothing else happened?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œAnd you swear to me that it will never happen again?โ€

โ€œYes, Johnny, I swear.โ€

My best friend exhaled an audible breath. โ€œI know I probably sound like an awful hypocrite to you, given my previous behavior, but I worry about you, Gibs.โ€ His shoulders sagged in defeat, and he dropped his head in his hands. โ€œIโ€™ve been thinking about it for a while now, and when I saw her looking at you like that, it suddenly clicked into place for me.โ€

โ€œNo need to worry about me, Johnny, lad,โ€ I tried to appease. โ€œIโ€™m always okay.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t bleeding help it,โ€ he admitted with a rueful smile. โ€œDespite my best efforts, Iโ€™ve grown regrettably attached to you.โ€ Smirking, he added, โ€œAnd all of your sixteen other personalities.โ€

โ€œAw, shucks.โ€ I grinned back at him. โ€œIs this your way of telling me you love me, Cap?โ€

โ€œWhatever floats your boat, Gibs.โ€
