Chapter no 24

Taming 7 (Boys of Tommen, 5)

โ€œIโ€™m still waiting, guys,โ€ I crooned, as I set three disposable cups of hot chocolate down and joined my friends at the table they had managed to snag in our favorite coffee shop the following afternoon. โ€œTell me youโ€™re super proud of me.โ€

โ€œSuper?โ€ Lizzie rolled her eyes and reached for her mug. โ€œWhat are we? Five years old again, Claire?โ€

โ€œNope, weโ€™re all sweet sixteen and never been kissed,โ€ I chirped back, feeling better than I deserved given last nightโ€™s antics. Apparently, I had the stomach of a horse, and the immunity of a demigod.ย Hangover who?

โ€œSpeak for yourself,โ€ my dry-witted friend shot back with a snort. โ€œIsnโ€™t that right, Shan?โ€

โ€œLiz,โ€ Shannon choked out a laugh. โ€œDonโ€™t be bad.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ I drawled. โ€œLet me rephrase that toย Iโ€™mย sweet sixteen and never been kissed. You two are modern women of the world, all loved up and married off to your rugby studs.โ€

Shannon beamed, while Lizzie gaped at me in horror. โ€œFirst off, Iโ€™m closer to seventeen than both of you. And second, I would rather shit in my hands and clap than marry anyone,โ€ she deadpanned. โ€œMuch lessย Pierce.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ My mouth fell open. โ€œYouย justย texted this morning saying it was back on.โ€

She shrugged uncommittedly. โ€œI spoke too soon.โ€

โ€œPoor Pierce,โ€ Shannon mused. โ€œHe really likes you, Liz.โ€

โ€œOh, please, Shan. He really likes my tits.โ€

โ€œLizzie!โ€ she squealed, slapping a hand over her mouth to bury the snort that escaped her.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Lizzie shrugged uncommittedly. โ€œItโ€™s true. And as for you, miss sweet sixteenโ€”โ€ she paused to point a finger at me โ€œโ€”youโ€™ve been kissed.โ€ Winking, she added, โ€œTwice.โ€

โ€œOhย yeah.โ€ Shannonโ€™s eyes lit up. โ€œJamie Kelleher at the school disco in second year, wasnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œUgh. Donโ€™t remind me,โ€ I groaned, burying my head in my hands. โ€œThat was a horrendous ordeal I would sooner saw my arm off than repeat.โ€

โ€œAnd donโ€™t forget Thor,โ€ Lizzie added, expression laced with disgust. โ€œHe came first. Claire let that creep put his mouth on her during a game of Spin the Bottle long before Jamie ever came along.โ€

โ€œHey,โ€ Shannon and I both said in unison, โ€œheโ€™s not a creep.โ€

โ€œNo, heโ€™s just related to one,โ€ Lizzie shot back, tone laced with venom.

I narrowed my eyes in warning. โ€œLiz.โ€

โ€œWhich makes him a creep in my mind.โ€

โ€œOh my God, you are like a broken record!โ€

โ€œOkay, okay, letโ€™s change the subject, guys,โ€ Shan was quick to interject before another full-blown argument ensued. After all, it wouldnโ€™t be the first time.

Lately, Lizzieโ€™s moods had been turbulent, to put it mildly, while my patience with her bad attitude was running thin.

When I had tried to talk to her about the cut on her leg, sheโ€™d all but taken my head off. When Iโ€™d told her that I was going to talk to her mother, sheโ€™d flipped out even more. Then, after giving me the cold shoulder for a week, Liz had told me that I was, in no uncertain terms, to keep my nose the hell out of her business if I valued our friendship.

Apparently, it was okay for Shannon to broach the subject, though, because she received no such response when she tried.

I got that she had an issue with Gerard, but it was a completely irrational and unfounded one that I, quite frankly, had enough of excusing. I was getting tired of being pounded on, too. I was always the punching bag. Never Shannon.

โ€œIโ€™m super proud of you,โ€ Shannon offered then, smiling across the table at me. โ€œFor getting the job. Itโ€™s amazing news, Claire.โ€

โ€œThanks, chickie.โ€ I beamed, momentarily appeased, as a wave of pride rolled through me. When time passed by and I didnโ€™t hear back from Hughโ€™s boss, I assumed Iโ€™d been unlucky. However, Kim called this morning to say that I could start during midterm break. It wasnโ€™t big money, and the shifts were every second weekend, but it was a start. โ€œYour girl here is officially on the work ladder.โ€

โ€œCourtesy of our girl hereโ€™s brother,โ€ Lizzie reminded me before taking a sip of her hot chocolate. โ€œHugh is always bailing you out.โ€

โ€œSo?โ€ I batted the air with my hand, refusing to let her goad me into another argument. โ€œThatโ€™s what big brothers are for.โ€

โ€œSinead is going to be thrilled,โ€ Shannon offered, attention flicking between my face and the phone she was discreetly glancing at from under the table. No prizes for which particular rugby player was sending her sneaky sex texts. Numberย thirteen. Cough, cough.ย โ€œSheโ€™s been wanting you to get a job since your birthday, hasnโ€™t she?โ€

โ€œOh yeah, sheโ€™s been tormenting me since August.โ€ I nodded in confirmation. โ€œMamโ€™s always been very serious about both Hugh and I making our own way in life. Sheโ€™s like โ€˜just because you two are in the fortunate position to not have to work until you finish school doesnโ€™t mean that you shouldnโ€™t.โ€™โ€ I took a sip of chocolatey goodness before continuing, โ€œHugh got a job as soon as he turned sixteen as well.โ€

โ€œLifeguarding, too, right?โ€

โ€œUh-huh.โ€ I nodded eagerly. โ€œWeโ€™re both fully trained and qualified.โ€

โ€œWow.โ€ Shannon leaned back in her chair with an impressed expression etched on her face. โ€œI knew you volunteered at the pool, but I didnโ€™t know you were an actual qualified lifeguard.โ€

โ€œYep, I took the test the day after my birthday.โ€

โ€œWhoa.โ€

โ€œMeh.โ€ I shrugged and offered her a wink. โ€œSome families produce hurlers.โ€

โ€œAnd some produce swimmers,โ€ she filled in with a smile.

โ€œItโ€™s because of what happened when they were kids,โ€ Lizzie said, eyes locked on the rim of her mug. โ€œBecause of what happened toย him.โ€

โ€œGibsie and his family?โ€ Shannon asked in a soft tone.

Lizzie nodded stiffly, but thankfully had the good grace to not toss a mean comment out in this moment.

โ€œIt was his First Holy Communion Day, wasnโ€™t it?โ€ Shannonโ€™s blue eyes widened. โ€œYou guys were all there?โ€

โ€œNot me,โ€ Lizzie replied. โ€œClaire and Hugh were.โ€

โ€œAfter the accident, Mam put us straight into swimming lessons,โ€ I explained, feeling the familiar wave of sadness settle heavily on my shoulders at the memory. โ€œDadโ€™s an amazing swimmer, and Mamโ€™s not too bad herself, but she wanted to prepare us.โ€ Repressing a shudder, I tucked a curl behind my ear and smiled across the table at both of them. โ€œItโ€™s an essential life skill to have, and it kind of feels like giving back, you know?โ€

โ€œWhich is why you volunteer at the public pool?โ€

I shrugged. โ€œNot every family can afford to send their children to swimming lessons,โ€ I explained. โ€œItโ€™s expensive, and you would be horrified if you knew the statistics on accidental drowning in Ireland.โ€

โ€œWell, we do live on an island.โ€

โ€œWhich isย whyย the government really need to do something about it,โ€ I urged, drumming my fingers on the table as I spoke. โ€œSwimming should be a compulsory course in primary schools across the country. I mean, algebra wonโ€™t save your life, but the breaststroke might. Iโ€™ve been writing to the board of education about this since fourth class, but Iโ€™ve never gotten a decent response,โ€ I added, scrunching my nose up in disapproval. โ€œJust the usual โ€˜itโ€™s at the discretion of each individual schoolโ€™ spiel theyโ€™ve been feeding me since forever.โ€

โ€œIย amย proud of you for that,โ€ Lizzie interjected, reaching a hand over the table to cover mine. โ€œYou must have written at least seventy letters since fourth class.โ€ Smiling, she added, โ€œYour tenacity is admirable.โ€

โ€œThanks, Liz,โ€ I replied, giving her hand an affectionate squeeze, earlier tension forgotten, as a momentary glimpse of the girl Iโ€™d grown up with shone through the dark cloud that followed her around.

It was at that exact moment in time, the glass door of the coffee shop swung open, and in walked a familiar face.

โ€œHey, stranger!โ€ I called out with a wave, as my brotherโ€™s bestie took in his surroundings with his usual, thoughtful blue-eyed gaze before scanning our table and strolling towards us. โ€œI feel like we havenโ€™t seen you in forever.โ€

โ€œYou saw me at school yesterday,โ€ he replied with a smile.

โ€œBut you havenโ€™t been over to the house lately.โ€

โ€œYeah, sorry about that. Itโ€™s been manic on the farm,โ€ Patrick explained. He looked ridiculously hot for a boy dressed in wellies, faded blue jeans, and an old, half-torn, white t-shirt. And the rustic wine-colored pleated overshirt he had on was the perfect icing on a very delectable cake. He was all dark hair, shy smiles, sun-kissed skin, and soulful blue eyes. The perfect recipe for teenage heartbreak. โ€œHey, Shan. Liz.โ€

โ€œHi, Feely.โ€

โ€œPatrick.โ€

โ€œYou look good, Pa,โ€ I decided to tell him, waggling my brows with mischief. โ€œSuper handsome.โ€

โ€œJesus.โ€ Lizzie rolled her eyes. โ€œAgain with the wordย super, Claire?โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I held my hands up. โ€œHe does.โ€

I wasnโ€™t the only one to notice, either. Several girls at other tables littered around the cafรฉ had all turned their heads in his direction. Heck, even Lizzie was looking.

โ€œThanks,โ€ he chuckled with a shy smile, reaching into his back pocket to retrieve his wallet. โ€œWant anything from the counter, girls?โ€

โ€œNah, weโ€™re good,โ€ I answered for all of us, and then watched in amusement as Lizzieโ€™s eyes tracked him all the way to the counter.

Oh, yeah, she wasย definitelyย looking at Patrick.

The only one immune to his sexy stable-boy attire was Shannon, who was too busy blushing at the screen of her phone to give him a second glance.

โ€œHe does look good,โ€ Lizzie surmised, finally turning her attention back to us. โ€œHeโ€™ll do Gomez Addams justice next Saturday night.โ€

โ€œOh my God, Liz!โ€ I squealed, unable to stop myself from bouncing in my seat. โ€œYouย likeย Patrick.โ€ Clapping my hands in pure unadulterated joy, I twisted around in my seat to get a better look at how good his ass looked in those jeans. โ€œYes, girl,ย yes! I approve of the upgrade.โ€

Lizzie gaped at me. โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€

โ€œAnd did you notice that he didnโ€™t even smell bad?โ€ I hurried to add, truly gleeful now. โ€œHeโ€™s been working on the farm all day, and thereโ€™s not a whiff of cow poo off his wellies. Just freshly cut silage and a little petrol.โ€ Grinning, I added, โ€œHeโ€™s a keeper, Liz. Paโ€™s amazing. Much better than Pierce, if you ask me.โ€ I scrunched my nose up in disgust when I added, โ€œAnd I bet he doesnโ€™t take girls v-cards in the backseat of his car at the GAA grounds, either.โ€

โ€œYou like Feely, Liz?โ€ Shannon asked, with a wide-eyed expression, when she finally decided to put her phone away and give us her attention. โ€œHow did I not know this?โ€

โ€œAh, maybe because itโ€™s not true,โ€ Lizzie deadpanned. โ€œHe looks good, I noticed, and now Claireโ€™s planning the bridal party.โ€

โ€œSo, youย donโ€™tย like him?โ€ Shannon asked, sounding confused.

โ€œNo, Iย doย like him,โ€ she began to say but I cut her off with an enthusiastic โ€œYay,โ€ before she could continue, โ€œThis is the best news ever!โ€

โ€œAs a friend,โ€ Lizzie clarified slowly. She turned to Shannon and repeated the words, โ€œAs aย friend.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ To give her credit, Shan looked almost as disappointed as I did about it. โ€œWell, heโ€™s a really nice person,โ€ she offered, tone hopeful. โ€œAnd gentle, and kind โ€ฆ โ€

โ€œAndย perfectย for you!โ€ I threw my two cents into the mix and added โ€“ again, maybe a little overly enthusiastically.

โ€œJesus, say it louder, Claire,โ€ Liz growled. โ€œI donโ€™t think the old biddies at the table in the corner heard you.โ€

โ€œSorry,โ€ I replied with a sheepish wince. โ€œBut all Iโ€™m trying to say is that I think you two would be perfect together.โ€

โ€œOh my God.โ€ Lizzie turned to Shannon. โ€œCanโ€™t you do something with her?โ€

โ€œLike what?โ€ Shannon laughed.

โ€œIโ€™m serious,โ€ I continued to plead my case. โ€œYou and Patrick make so much sense.โ€ I was almost disappointed in myself for not thinking about the two of them sooner, but now that I had, I couldnโ€™t get the idea out of my mind. โ€œHeโ€™s the perfect amount of calm to your storm!โ€

โ€œPut a muzzle on her or something,โ€ Lizzie said, ignoring me entirely.

โ€œWhatever.โ€ I rolled my eyes. โ€œYou two are perfect for each other, but donโ€™t take my word for it.โ€

โ€œWhoโ€™s perfect for each other?โ€ Patrick asked, sliding onto the bench seat next to Shannon. โ€œOr am I safer not knowing?โ€

โ€œUh โ€ฆ this is definitely one of those better off not knowing scenarios,โ€ Shan replied, as she scooted over on the bench, and gulped down another mouthful of hot chocolate.

โ€œHey โ€ฆย Patrick?โ€ Smiling, I leaned across the table, giving him my full attention.

โ€œHey โ€ฆย Claire,โ€ he humored me by drawling, while he cracked open a can of fizzy orange, and took a sip.

โ€œAre you seeing anyone at the moment?โ€

โ€œSeeing anyone?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ I nodded eagerly. โ€œLike a girlfriend or something.โ€

โ€œOh God,โ€ Shan choked out before practically diving for her mug.

Patrick stared blankly at me for a long beat before arching a brow. โ€œWhat are you up to, Baby Biggs?โ€

โ€œIgnore her,โ€ Lizzie growled, and then forcefully kicked me under the table. โ€œShe didnโ€™t take her meds this morning.โ€

โ€œActually, I did,โ€ I shot back, and then added, โ€œI take a daily multivitamin,โ€ for clarification.

โ€œPity it wasnโ€™t Valium,โ€ Lizzie grumbled. โ€œOr a very strong tranquilizer.โ€

โ€œSo do I,โ€ Shannon offered up. โ€œTake multivitamins, that is. Although, I take, like, three different ones. Edel buys a ton of health products for me and the boys.โ€ Smiling sheepishly, she added, โ€œI guess I was lacking in a few vitamins.โ€

It was beautiful to see, to finally know that my friend was receiving the maternal love she always deserved. Because in all honesty, no one deserved a better life than Shannon Lynch and her brothers.

โ€œNot anymore,โ€ Lizzie replied protectively, giving our friend a reassuring smile. Yeah, it was safe to say that our entire friendship group was more than a little protective of her. โ€œYouโ€™re kicking ass now, Shan.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ Her cheeks flamed with heat. โ€œI am.โ€

โ€œSo, whoโ€™s the other drink for?โ€ Lizzie asked then, pointing to the spare can of fizzy orange on the table. โ€œOr are you parched with the thirst?โ€

Patrick opened his mouth to respond when the cafรฉ door flew open.

โ€œGibsie!โ€ Shannon said with a huge smile on her face, while Lizzie bit out the word, โ€œThor,โ€ like it was poison on her tongue.

โ€œAbout time,โ€ Patrick said, tapping on his watch. โ€œWhat happened to โ€˜Iโ€™ll park up and follow you right inโ€™?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t blame me, lad, the traffic is fucking mental in this town,โ€ Gerard declared, taking up the whole room with his larger-than-life presence. โ€œIโ€™ve been circling around for a parking spot since I left you.โ€

He was wearing faded blue jeans and a white t-shirt that was molded to his body, emphasizing those impressive biceps heโ€™d spent most of his teenage years accumulating.

โ€œPity you didnโ€™t circle off the face of the earth,โ€ Lizzie caught my attention by saying, and I internally groaned.ย Here we go again.

โ€œDonโ€™t even start with me, viper,โ€ Gerard warned, strolling over to our table. โ€œIโ€™ve had a very pressing day, and Iโ€™m in no form for your antics.โ€

โ€œAsshole, you wouldnโ€™t know the meaning of a pressing day,โ€ she countered. โ€œAlthough, you could make my day a lot better by disappearing.โ€

โ€œIs that right?โ€ Gerard replied, eyes wide and tone dripping with sarcasm. โ€œWell, in that case, I better pull up a chair and get comfy.โ€

Lizzie narrowed her eyes at him. โ€œDrop dead.โ€

โ€œYou first,โ€ Gerard shot back before reaching over to ruffle Shannonโ€™sย hair affectionately. โ€œKeep that head up, Little Shannon.โ€ He offered her a reassuring wink. โ€œEverythingโ€™s grand.โ€

โ€œHi, Gibs,โ€ Shannon replied, clearly embarrassed by Lizzieโ€™s outburst.

It wasnโ€™t a nice place to be when she erupted on him, but it didnโ€™t make me feel embarrassed anymore.

Just tired.

Looking uncertainly between the pair of them, Shannon glanced from Lizzie to Gerard before asking, โ€œAre โ€ฆ you okay?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m always okay,โ€ he replied warmly, and then he turned his mega-watt smile on me, causing every bone in my body to turn to jelly. โ€œClaire-Bear.โ€

โ€œHey, Gerard,โ€ I replied, desperately trying to sound nonchalant, even though every nerve-ending in my body sprang to life when he slid onto the bench next to me.

Most of last night was a blurry haze, but when I woke up in his arms this morning, it felt different.

Deeper.

โ€œYou doing okay?โ€ Ignoring the rest of our friends, Gerard leaned his forearm on the table, and angled his body towards mine, giving me his undivided attention. โ€œHowโ€™s the head?โ€

Sometimes it was hard to know where I stood with Gerard, because sometimes, I wasnโ€™t sure which version of Gerard I was getting.

When we were alone at night, the vulnerable boy Iโ€™d spent my life adoring made an appearance. When we were with friends, it was the confident, no-fucks-given version of him that became dominant. And that particular version, no matter how infuriating at times, was undeniably sexy. Like seriouslyย hot.

โ€œI feel grand,โ€ I responded, feeling myself melt under the heat of his stare. It couldnโ€™t be helped. It was impossible not to wilt when a boy stared this intensely into your eyes. โ€œNever better.โ€

โ€œSo, weโ€™re okay?โ€ he asked, keeping his big gray eyes locked on mine.

When he reached up and tucked a rogue curl behind my ear I swear,ย an audible puff of air escaped my lips, which, I had to begrudgingly concede, wasnโ€™t as embarrassing as a moan.

And there had been times I had moaned.

Many times.

โ€œHuh?โ€ I asked, dragging myself from my thoughts, when I realized he was clearly waiting for me to speak. โ€œWhy wouldnโ€™t we be okay?โ€

โ€œYou tell me.โ€

โ€œI have no idea,โ€ I breathed, repressing a shiver.

โ€œOkay then.โ€ A small smile tugged at his lips. โ€œThatโ€™s all I needed to know.โ€

Confused by where the conversation was leading, I blurted out the first thing that came to mind. โ€œI got a job!โ€

โ€œA job?โ€

โ€œYep.โ€ Finding my composure, I cleared my throat and smiled. โ€œRemember that interview I went for back in the summer? The one for part-time lifeguard at the hotel with Hugh? Well, his boss called this morning.โ€ Shrugging, I exhaled another shaky breath and forced a smile. โ€œShe hired me.โ€

โ€œShe did?โ€ The smile Gerard was sporting grew to epic proportions. โ€œFuck yeah, my little mermaid!โ€

โ€œYep,โ€ I breathed against his chest when he pulled me in for a massive bear hug. Unable to stop myself, I inhaled deeply, filling my senses with his delectable signature scent. I didnโ€™t care if it was creepy or not. The boy smelledย delicious. โ€œI start during midterm break.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re amazing,โ€ he chuckled, pulling back to look at me. โ€œDo you hear me, Claire-Bear?โ€ Cupping my cheeks with his big hands, he leaned in close and pressed his forehead to mine, while excitement and pride danced in his eyes. โ€œIโ€™m so fucking proud of you.โ€

โ€œOh cop on,โ€ Lizzie gagged from across the table. โ€œShe got a part-time, Thor, she didnโ€™t make partner in a law firm. A little clarity, please.โ€

โ€œItย isย a big deal,โ€ Gerard argued, taking her bait, as he twisted back to face the rest of our friends. โ€œItโ€™s a huge fucking deal, actually.โ€

โ€œSure, it is.โ€

โ€œJust leave it alone,โ€ Patrick instructed calmly, twisting the metal topper on his can back and forth. โ€œIf you two canโ€™t be civil to each other, then do us all a favor and ignore each other.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Lizzie protested in a defensive tone. โ€œHeโ€™s acting like she won the lotto.โ€

โ€œAnd that pisses you off because?โ€ Gerard demanded. โ€œWhatโ€™s your problem, viper? Why canโ€™t you be happy for her?โ€

โ€œGerard,โ€ I growled, digging him in the ribs. โ€œDonโ€™t call her that.โ€

โ€œIย amย happy for Claire,โ€ Lizzie spat. โ€œBut youโ€™re putting on a full-blown act in the hopes of getting in her knickers. Itโ€™s bullshit, and Iโ€™m on to you, asshole.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re delusional.โ€

โ€œAnd youโ€™re a useless prick.โ€

โ€œActually, I have a job, so Iโ€™m not completely useless.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ She snorted. โ€œA pity position at your mammyโ€™s bakery.โ€

โ€œWhereโ€™s your job at, Liz?โ€ Gerard demanded. โ€œHuh? The fuck are you doing with your life?โ€

โ€œActually, weโ€™ve been babysitting,โ€ Shannon offered up, clearly trying to diffuse the situation.

โ€œBabysitting?โ€ Gerard arched a brow. โ€œTogether?โ€

โ€œUh, yeah,โ€ Shannon explained, cheeks turning bright pink. โ€œItโ€™s a little business venture we started working on during the summer.โ€ Smiling, she added, โ€œItโ€™s really starting to take off.โ€

โ€œGot a problem with that, Thor?โ€ Lizzie was quick to ask, glaring at him.

โ€œWith Shannon babysitting?โ€ He shook his head. โ€œNot a one. Sheโ€™s perfect for the role.โ€

โ€œSo, itโ€™s just me you have an issue with?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s just you.โ€

โ€œGuys,โ€ Shannon groaned, placing her hand on Lizzieโ€™s. โ€œPlease donโ€™t.โ€

โ€œCare to elaborate.โ€

He leaned back in his seat and folded his big arms across his chest. โ€œIย wouldnโ€™t leave you in charge of my hedgehog, let alone a child.โ€

โ€œBecause?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m a good judge of character.โ€

โ€œMeaning?โ€

โ€œMeaning exactly that.โ€

โ€œSo, you donโ€™t think Iโ€™m capable of looking after a child?โ€

โ€œNope.โ€

โ€œIf I recall correctly, my sister babysat you an awful lot when we were kids.โ€

โ€œThanks for the trip down memory lane.โ€

โ€œAnd you liked it when she babysat you.โ€

โ€œDid I?โ€

โ€œOh my God, guys!โ€ I snapped, throwing my hands up in frustration. โ€œJust stop it, will you?โ€

โ€œYou stop it,โ€ Lizzie snapped back, meeting my glare head on with an even angrier one of her own. โ€œStop letting that asshole walk all over you.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s not,โ€ I groaned, imploring her with my eyes to hear me.

โ€œYes, he is!โ€

โ€œWhat in the name of Christ are you talking about?โ€ Gerard snapped, running a hand through his hair. โ€œI congratulatedย ourย friend on getting her first job. Yeah,ย ourย friend. Last time I checked, that wasnโ€™t a method of seduction. But you still somehow manage to fly off the handle!โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t try to make out like Iโ€™m crazy, Thor,โ€ Lizzie spat back. โ€œWe all know what youโ€™re doing here. Iโ€™m just the only one with the balls to say it.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not trying to make you out to be crazy, Lizzie,โ€ Gerard shot back, eyes bulging. โ€œI donโ€™t need to, because the whole fucking world can see it plain as day.โ€

โ€œGibs!โ€ Patrick snapped. โ€œThatโ€™s too far, lad.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Lizzie countered heatedly. โ€œWhat would be going too far is telling him that Peter Biggs saved the wrong child from the watโ€”โ€

โ€œLa, la, la!โ€ Shannon sang out in a frantic tone, as she reached over and clamped a hand over Lizzieโ€™s mouth. โ€œWords stick, Liz. Please donโ€™tย say it.โ€

โ€œLet her,โ€ Gerard demanded, while he leaned back in his seat and glared at her. โ€œCome on, viper. Finish what you were going to say. Get it off your chest.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t,โ€ the rest of us begged in unison and then simultaneously held our breaths, waiting for all hell to break loose.

โ€œI donโ€™t need to say it,โ€ Lizzie finally replied, eyes locked on Gerard. โ€œFrom the look on your face, you already know itโ€™s true.โ€

Shannon groaned, Patrick dropped his head in his hands, meanwhile my jaw damn near hit the floor.

โ€œYou didย notย just say that, Lizzie Young,โ€ I whisper-hissed. โ€œTell me you did not just say that!โ€ When she made no move to respond, I turned to the boy sitting beside me. โ€œGerard.โ€ The boy that was climbing to his feet. โ€œNo, Gerard, donโ€™t โ€ฆ just wait a minute, will you?โ€

He didnโ€™t wait.

He didnโ€™t respond, either.

Instead, he stood up quietly and walked out.

He didnโ€™t even slam the cafรฉ door behind him.

โ€œThat was bad,โ€ Shannon groaned, still covering her head with her hands. โ€œThat was so bad.โ€

โ€œYep,โ€ Patrick agreed calmly. โ€œA total shitshow.โ€

โ€œYou need to apologize,โ€ I snapped, glowering across the table at Lizzie. โ€œYou need to go out there and apologize to that boy.โ€

โ€œWhen hell freezes over.โ€

โ€œI mean it, Liz,โ€ I pushed, feeling furious. โ€œRight this second.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll tell you what, Claire,โ€ she shot back heatedly, โ€œIโ€™ll apologize to him for his sister dying when he apologizes to me for mine!โ€

โ€œOh my God.โ€ I wanted to scream. โ€œCaoimhe hasย nothingย to do with how you just spoke to him just now.โ€

โ€œCaoimhe hasย everythingย to do with everything,โ€ Lizzie choked out, tears filling her eyes. โ€œEverything.โ€

โ€œYou and Gibsie have both lost your sisters,โ€ Shannon tried to reason with her by offering. โ€œYou know how bad it hurts, Liz. It cripples youย daily. Thatโ€™s how Gibsie feels, too.โ€

โ€œMaybe,โ€ she conceded, but her tone was still fully loaded with venom when she spat, โ€œDifference is I had nothing to do with his sisterโ€™s death and he had everything to do with mine!โ€

โ€œHow?โ€ Shannon urged. โ€œHe was just a little boy when Caoimhe died, Liz. A little kid like the rest of us.โ€

โ€œAsk his brother.โ€

โ€œStepbrother,โ€ Feely interjected calmly.

โ€œFine,โ€ Lizzie seethed, teeth grinding. โ€œAsk hisย stepbrother.โ€

โ€œMark?โ€

โ€œAnd while youโ€™re at it, ask why that monster was involved with my sister in the first place!โ€ Nostrils flaring, she spat, โ€œAsk whose fault wasย that.โ€

โ€œNope. I canโ€™t.โ€ Shaking my head, I threw my hands up in resignation and slid out of my seat. โ€œI honestly canโ€™t do this with you anymore. I know youโ€™re a good person, Liz, or at least, I know thereโ€™s a good person in there somewhere, but Iโ€™m tired of being on the frontline defending your actions when I donโ€™t agree with them.โ€

โ€œI never asked you to do that for me.โ€

โ€œYou didnโ€™t have to, because thatโ€™s what friends do, but itโ€™s getting old and Iโ€™m growing up.โ€

โ€œClaire, wait,โ€ Shannon called after me. โ€œDonโ€™t go. Letโ€™s just sit down and talk this out.โ€

โ€œNo, you can talk to her. I need to not be near her right now, Shan,โ€ I called over my shoulder, as I made a beeline for the exit. Because if I didnโ€™t get away from our friend, I would explode. โ€œIโ€™ll call you later, okay?โ€
