โIโm still waiting, guys,โ I crooned, as I set three disposable cups of hot chocolate down and joined my friends at the table they had managed to snag in our favorite coffee shop the following afternoon. โTell me youโre super proud of me.โ
โSuper?โ Lizzie rolled her eyes and reached for her mug. โWhat are we? Five years old again, Claire?โ
โNope, weโre all sweet sixteen and never been kissed,โ I chirped back, feeling better than I deserved given last nightโs antics. Apparently, I had the stomach of a horse, and the immunity of a demigod.ย Hangover who?
โSpeak for yourself,โ my dry-witted friend shot back with a snort. โIsnโt that right, Shan?โ
โLiz,โ Shannon choked out a laugh. โDonโt be bad.โ
โOkay,โ I drawled. โLet me rephrase that toย Iโmย sweet sixteen and never been kissed. You two are modern women of the world, all loved up and married off to your rugby studs.โ
Shannon beamed, while Lizzie gaped at me in horror. โFirst off, Iโm closer to seventeen than both of you. And second, I would rather shit in my hands and clap than marry anyone,โ she deadpanned. โMuch lessย Pierce.โ
โWhat?โ My mouth fell open. โYouย justย texted this morning saying it was back on.โ
She shrugged uncommittedly. โI spoke too soon.โ
โPoor Pierce,โ Shannon mused. โHe really likes you, Liz.โ
โOh, please, Shan. He really likes my tits.โ
โLizzie!โ she squealed, slapping a hand over her mouth to bury the snort that escaped her.
โWhat?โ Lizzie shrugged uncommittedly. โItโs true. And as for you, miss sweet sixteenโโ she paused to point a finger at me โโyouโve been kissed.โ Winking, she added, โTwice.โ
โOhย yeah.โ Shannonโs eyes lit up. โJamie Kelleher at the school disco in second year, wasnโt it?โ
โUgh. Donโt remind me,โ I groaned, burying my head in my hands. โThat was a horrendous ordeal I would sooner saw my arm off than repeat.โ
โAnd donโt forget Thor,โ Lizzie added, expression laced with disgust. โHe came first. Claire let that creep put his mouth on her during a game of Spin the Bottle long before Jamie ever came along.โ
โHey,โ Shannon and I both said in unison, โheโs not a creep.โ
โNo, heโs just related to one,โ Lizzie shot back, tone laced with venom.
I narrowed my eyes in warning. โLiz.โ
โWhich makes him a creep in my mind.โ
โOh my God, you are like a broken record!โ
โOkay, okay, letโs change the subject, guys,โ Shan was quick to interject before another full-blown argument ensued. After all, it wouldnโt be the first time.
Lately, Lizzieโs moods had been turbulent, to put it mildly, while my patience with her bad attitude was running thin.
When I had tried to talk to her about the cut on her leg, sheโd all but taken my head off. When Iโd told her that I was going to talk to her mother, sheโd flipped out even more. Then, after giving me the cold shoulder for a week, Liz had told me that I was, in no uncertain terms, to keep my nose the hell out of her business if I valued our friendship.
Apparently, it was okay for Shannon to broach the subject, though, because she received no such response when she tried.
I got that she had an issue with Gerard, but it was a completely irrational and unfounded one that I, quite frankly, had enough of excusing. I was getting tired of being pounded on, too. I was always the punching bag. Never Shannon.
โIโm super proud of you,โ Shannon offered then, smiling across the table at me. โFor getting the job. Itโs amazing news, Claire.โ
โThanks, chickie.โ I beamed, momentarily appeased, as a wave of pride rolled through me. When time passed by and I didnโt hear back from Hughโs boss, I assumed Iโd been unlucky. However, Kim called this morning to say that I could start during midterm break. It wasnโt big money, and the shifts were every second weekend, but it was a start. โYour girl here is officially on the work ladder.โ
โCourtesy of our girl hereโs brother,โ Lizzie reminded me before taking a sip of her hot chocolate. โHugh is always bailing you out.โ
โSo?โ I batted the air with my hand, refusing to let her goad me into another argument. โThatโs what big brothers are for.โ
โSinead is going to be thrilled,โ Shannon offered, attention flicking between my face and the phone she was discreetly glancing at from under the table. No prizes for which particular rugby player was sending her sneaky sex texts. Numberย thirteen. Cough, cough.ย โSheโs been wanting you to get a job since your birthday, hasnโt she?โ
โOh yeah, sheโs been tormenting me since August.โ I nodded in confirmation. โMamโs always been very serious about both Hugh and I making our own way in life. Sheโs like โjust because you two are in the fortunate position to not have to work until you finish school doesnโt mean that you shouldnโt.โโ I took a sip of chocolatey goodness before continuing, โHugh got a job as soon as he turned sixteen as well.โ
โLifeguarding, too, right?โ
โUh-huh.โ I nodded eagerly. โWeโre both fully trained and qualified.โ
โWow.โ Shannon leaned back in her chair with an impressed expression etched on her face. โI knew you volunteered at the pool, but I didnโt know you were an actual qualified lifeguard.โ
โYep, I took the test the day after my birthday.โ
โWhoa.โ
โMeh.โ I shrugged and offered her a wink. โSome families produce hurlers.โ
โAnd some produce swimmers,โ she filled in with a smile.
โItโs because of what happened when they were kids,โ Lizzie said, eyes locked on the rim of her mug. โBecause of what happened toย him.โ
โGibsie and his family?โ Shannon asked in a soft tone.
Lizzie nodded stiffly, but thankfully had the good grace to not toss a mean comment out in this moment.
โIt was his First Holy Communion Day, wasnโt it?โ Shannonโs blue eyes widened. โYou guys were all there?โ
โNot me,โ Lizzie replied. โClaire and Hugh were.โ
โAfter the accident, Mam put us straight into swimming lessons,โ I explained, feeling the familiar wave of sadness settle heavily on my shoulders at the memory. โDadโs an amazing swimmer, and Mamโs not too bad herself, but she wanted to prepare us.โ Repressing a shudder, I tucked a curl behind my ear and smiled across the table at both of them. โItโs an essential life skill to have, and it kind of feels like giving back, you know?โ
โWhich is why you volunteer at the public pool?โ
I shrugged. โNot every family can afford to send their children to swimming lessons,โ I explained. โItโs expensive, and you would be horrified if you knew the statistics on accidental drowning in Ireland.โ
โWell, we do live on an island.โ
โWhich isย whyย the government really need to do something about it,โ I urged, drumming my fingers on the table as I spoke. โSwimming should be a compulsory course in primary schools across the country. I mean, algebra wonโt save your life, but the breaststroke might. Iโve been writing to the board of education about this since fourth class, but Iโve never gotten a decent response,โ I added, scrunching my nose up in disapproval. โJust the usual โitโs at the discretion of each individual schoolโ spiel theyโve been feeding me since forever.โ
โIย amย proud of you for that,โ Lizzie interjected, reaching a hand over the table to cover mine. โYou must have written at least seventy letters since fourth class.โ Smiling, she added, โYour tenacity is admirable.โ
โThanks, Liz,โ I replied, giving her hand an affectionate squeeze, earlier tension forgotten, as a momentary glimpse of the girl Iโd grown up with shone through the dark cloud that followed her around.
It was at that exact moment in time, the glass door of the coffee shop swung open, and in walked a familiar face.
โHey, stranger!โ I called out with a wave, as my brotherโs bestie took in his surroundings with his usual, thoughtful blue-eyed gaze before scanning our table and strolling towards us. โI feel like we havenโt seen you in forever.โ
โYou saw me at school yesterday,โ he replied with a smile.
โBut you havenโt been over to the house lately.โ
โYeah, sorry about that. Itโs been manic on the farm,โ Patrick explained. He looked ridiculously hot for a boy dressed in wellies, faded blue jeans, and an old, half-torn, white t-shirt. And the rustic wine-colored pleated overshirt he had on was the perfect icing on a very delectable cake. He was all dark hair, shy smiles, sun-kissed skin, and soulful blue eyes. The perfect recipe for teenage heartbreak. โHey, Shan. Liz.โ
โHi, Feely.โ
โPatrick.โ
โYou look good, Pa,โ I decided to tell him, waggling my brows with mischief. โSuper handsome.โ
โJesus.โ Lizzie rolled her eyes. โAgain with the wordย super, Claire?โ
โWhat?โ I held my hands up. โHe does.โ
I wasnโt the only one to notice, either. Several girls at other tables littered around the cafรฉ had all turned their heads in his direction. Heck, even Lizzie was looking.
โThanks,โ he chuckled with a shy smile, reaching into his back pocket to retrieve his wallet. โWant anything from the counter, girls?โ
โNah, weโre good,โ I answered for all of us, and then watched in amusement as Lizzieโs eyes tracked him all the way to the counter.
Oh, yeah, she wasย definitelyย looking at Patrick.
The only one immune to his sexy stable-boy attire was Shannon, who was too busy blushing at the screen of her phone to give him a second glance.
โHe does look good,โ Lizzie surmised, finally turning her attention back to us. โHeโll do Gomez Addams justice next Saturday night.โ
โOh my God, Liz!โ I squealed, unable to stop myself from bouncing in my seat. โYouย likeย Patrick.โ Clapping my hands in pure unadulterated joy, I twisted around in my seat to get a better look at how good his ass looked in those jeans. โYes, girl,ย yes! I approve of the upgrade.โ
Lizzie gaped at me. โWhat are you talking about?โ
โAnd did you notice that he didnโt even smell bad?โ I hurried to add, truly gleeful now. โHeโs been working on the farm all day, and thereโs not a whiff of cow poo off his wellies. Just freshly cut silage and a little petrol.โ Grinning, I added, โHeโs a keeper, Liz. Paโs amazing. Much better than Pierce, if you ask me.โ I scrunched my nose up in disgust when I added, โAnd I bet he doesnโt take girls v-cards in the backseat of his car at the GAA grounds, either.โ
โYou like Feely, Liz?โ Shannon asked, with a wide-eyed expression, when she finally decided to put her phone away and give us her attention. โHow did I not know this?โ
โAh, maybe because itโs not true,โ Lizzie deadpanned. โHe looks good, I noticed, and now Claireโs planning the bridal party.โ
โSo, youย donโtย like him?โ Shannon asked, sounding confused.
โNo, Iย doย like him,โ she began to say but I cut her off with an enthusiastic โYay,โ before she could continue, โThis is the best news ever!โ
โAs a friend,โ Lizzie clarified slowly. She turned to Shannon and repeated the words, โAs aย friend.โ
โOh.โ To give her credit, Shan looked almost as disappointed as I did about it. โWell, heโs a really nice person,โ she offered, tone hopeful. โAnd gentle, and kind โฆ โ
โAndย perfectย for you!โ I threw my two cents into the mix and added โ again, maybe a little overly enthusiastically.
โJesus, say it louder, Claire,โ Liz growled. โI donโt think the old biddies at the table in the corner heard you.โ
โSorry,โ I replied with a sheepish wince. โBut all Iโm trying to say is that I think you two would be perfect together.โ
โOh my God.โ Lizzie turned to Shannon. โCanโt you do something with her?โ
โLike what?โ Shannon laughed.
โIโm serious,โ I continued to plead my case. โYou and Patrick make so much sense.โ I was almost disappointed in myself for not thinking about the two of them sooner, but now that I had, I couldnโt get the idea out of my mind. โHeโs the perfect amount of calm to your storm!โ
โPut a muzzle on her or something,โ Lizzie said, ignoring me entirely.
โWhatever.โ I rolled my eyes. โYou two are perfect for each other, but donโt take my word for it.โ
โWhoโs perfect for each other?โ Patrick asked, sliding onto the bench seat next to Shannon. โOr am I safer not knowing?โ
โUh โฆ this is definitely one of those better off not knowing scenarios,โ Shan replied, as she scooted over on the bench, and gulped down another mouthful of hot chocolate.
โHey โฆย Patrick?โ Smiling, I leaned across the table, giving him my full attention.
โHey โฆย Claire,โ he humored me by drawling, while he cracked open a can of fizzy orange, and took a sip.
โAre you seeing anyone at the moment?โ
โSeeing anyone?โ
โYeah.โ I nodded eagerly. โLike a girlfriend or something.โ
โOh God,โ Shan choked out before practically diving for her mug.
Patrick stared blankly at me for a long beat before arching a brow. โWhat are you up to, Baby Biggs?โ
โIgnore her,โ Lizzie growled, and then forcefully kicked me under the table. โShe didnโt take her meds this morning.โ
โActually, I did,โ I shot back, and then added, โI take a daily multivitamin,โ for clarification.
โPity it wasnโt Valium,โ Lizzie grumbled. โOr a very strong tranquilizer.โ
โSo do I,โ Shannon offered up. โTake multivitamins, that is. Although, I take, like, three different ones. Edel buys a ton of health products for me and the boys.โ Smiling sheepishly, she added, โI guess I was lacking in a few vitamins.โ
It was beautiful to see, to finally know that my friend was receiving the maternal love she always deserved. Because in all honesty, no one deserved a better life than Shannon Lynch and her brothers.
โNot anymore,โ Lizzie replied protectively, giving our friend a reassuring smile. Yeah, it was safe to say that our entire friendship group was more than a little protective of her. โYouโre kicking ass now, Shan.โ
โYeah.โ Her cheeks flamed with heat. โI am.โ
โSo, whoโs the other drink for?โ Lizzie asked then, pointing to the spare can of fizzy orange on the table. โOr are you parched with the thirst?โ
Patrick opened his mouth to respond when the cafรฉ door flew open.
โGibsie!โ Shannon said with a huge smile on her face, while Lizzie bit out the word, โThor,โ like it was poison on her tongue.
โAbout time,โ Patrick said, tapping on his watch. โWhat happened to โIโll park up and follow you right inโ?โ
โDonโt blame me, lad, the traffic is fucking mental in this town,โ Gerard declared, taking up the whole room with his larger-than-life presence. โIโve been circling around for a parking spot since I left you.โ
He was wearing faded blue jeans and a white t-shirt that was molded to his body, emphasizing those impressive biceps heโd spent most of his teenage years accumulating.
โPity you didnโt circle off the face of the earth,โ Lizzie caught my attention by saying, and I internally groaned.ย Here we go again.
โDonโt even start with me, viper,โ Gerard warned, strolling over to our table. โIโve had a very pressing day, and Iโm in no form for your antics.โ
โAsshole, you wouldnโt know the meaning of a pressing day,โ she countered. โAlthough, you could make my day a lot better by disappearing.โ
โIs that right?โ Gerard replied, eyes wide and tone dripping with sarcasm. โWell, in that case, I better pull up a chair and get comfy.โ
Lizzie narrowed her eyes at him. โDrop dead.โ
โYou first,โ Gerard shot back before reaching over to ruffle Shannonโsย hair affectionately. โKeep that head up, Little Shannon.โ He offered her a reassuring wink. โEverythingโs grand.โ
โHi, Gibs,โ Shannon replied, clearly embarrassed by Lizzieโs outburst.
It wasnโt a nice place to be when she erupted on him, but it didnโt make me feel embarrassed anymore.
Just tired.
Looking uncertainly between the pair of them, Shannon glanced from Lizzie to Gerard before asking, โAre โฆ you okay?โ
โIโm always okay,โ he replied warmly, and then he turned his mega-watt smile on me, causing every bone in my body to turn to jelly. โClaire-Bear.โ
โHey, Gerard,โ I replied, desperately trying to sound nonchalant, even though every nerve-ending in my body sprang to life when he slid onto the bench next to me.
Most of last night was a blurry haze, but when I woke up in his arms this morning, it felt different.
Deeper.
โYou doing okay?โ Ignoring the rest of our friends, Gerard leaned his forearm on the table, and angled his body towards mine, giving me his undivided attention. โHowโs the head?โ
Sometimes it was hard to know where I stood with Gerard, because sometimes, I wasnโt sure which version of Gerard I was getting.
When we were alone at night, the vulnerable boy Iโd spent my life adoring made an appearance. When we were with friends, it was the confident, no-fucks-given version of him that became dominant. And that particular version, no matter how infuriating at times, was undeniably sexy. Like seriouslyย hot.
โI feel grand,โ I responded, feeling myself melt under the heat of his stare. It couldnโt be helped. It was impossible not to wilt when a boy stared this intensely into your eyes. โNever better.โ
โSo, weโre okay?โ he asked, keeping his big gray eyes locked on mine.
When he reached up and tucked a rogue curl behind my ear I swear,ย an audible puff of air escaped my lips, which, I had to begrudgingly concede, wasnโt as embarrassing as a moan.
And there had been times I had moaned.
Many times.
โHuh?โ I asked, dragging myself from my thoughts, when I realized he was clearly waiting for me to speak. โWhy wouldnโt we be okay?โ
โYou tell me.โ
โI have no idea,โ I breathed, repressing a shiver.
โOkay then.โ A small smile tugged at his lips. โThatโs all I needed to know.โ
Confused by where the conversation was leading, I blurted out the first thing that came to mind. โI got a job!โ
โA job?โ
โYep.โ Finding my composure, I cleared my throat and smiled. โRemember that interview I went for back in the summer? The one for part-time lifeguard at the hotel with Hugh? Well, his boss called this morning.โ Shrugging, I exhaled another shaky breath and forced a smile. โShe hired me.โ
โShe did?โ The smile Gerard was sporting grew to epic proportions. โFuck yeah, my little mermaid!โ
โYep,โ I breathed against his chest when he pulled me in for a massive bear hug. Unable to stop myself, I inhaled deeply, filling my senses with his delectable signature scent. I didnโt care if it was creepy or not. The boy smelledย delicious. โI start during midterm break.โ
โYouโre amazing,โ he chuckled, pulling back to look at me. โDo you hear me, Claire-Bear?โ Cupping my cheeks with his big hands, he leaned in close and pressed his forehead to mine, while excitement and pride danced in his eyes. โIโm so fucking proud of you.โ
โOh cop on,โ Lizzie gagged from across the table. โShe got a part-time, Thor, she didnโt make partner in a law firm. A little clarity, please.โ
โItย isย a big deal,โ Gerard argued, taking her bait, as he twisted back to face the rest of our friends. โItโs a huge fucking deal, actually.โ
โSure, it is.โ
โJust leave it alone,โ Patrick instructed calmly, twisting the metal topper on his can back and forth. โIf you two canโt be civil to each other, then do us all a favor and ignore each other.โ
โWhat?โ Lizzie protested in a defensive tone. โHeโs acting like she won the lotto.โ
โAnd that pisses you off because?โ Gerard demanded. โWhatโs your problem, viper? Why canโt you be happy for her?โ
โGerard,โ I growled, digging him in the ribs. โDonโt call her that.โ
โIย amย happy for Claire,โ Lizzie spat. โBut youโre putting on a full-blown act in the hopes of getting in her knickers. Itโs bullshit, and Iโm on to you, asshole.โ
โYouโre delusional.โ
โAnd youโre a useless prick.โ
โActually, I have a job, so Iโm not completely useless.โ
โYeah.โ She snorted. โA pity position at your mammyโs bakery.โ
โWhereโs your job at, Liz?โ Gerard demanded. โHuh? The fuck are you doing with your life?โ
โActually, weโve been babysitting,โ Shannon offered up, clearly trying to diffuse the situation.
โBabysitting?โ Gerard arched a brow. โTogether?โ
โUh, yeah,โ Shannon explained, cheeks turning bright pink. โItโs a little business venture we started working on during the summer.โ Smiling, she added, โItโs really starting to take off.โ
โGot a problem with that, Thor?โ Lizzie was quick to ask, glaring at him.
โWith Shannon babysitting?โ He shook his head. โNot a one. Sheโs perfect for the role.โ
โSo, itโs just me you have an issue with?โ
โItโs just you.โ
โGuys,โ Shannon groaned, placing her hand on Lizzieโs. โPlease donโt.โ
โCare to elaborate.โ
He leaned back in his seat and folded his big arms across his chest. โIย wouldnโt leave you in charge of my hedgehog, let alone a child.โ
โBecause?โ
โIโm a good judge of character.โ
โMeaning?โ
โMeaning exactly that.โ
โSo, you donโt think Iโm capable of looking after a child?โ
โNope.โ
โIf I recall correctly, my sister babysat you an awful lot when we were kids.โ
โThanks for the trip down memory lane.โ
โAnd you liked it when she babysat you.โ
โDid I?โ
โOh my God, guys!โ I snapped, throwing my hands up in frustration. โJust stop it, will you?โ
โYou stop it,โ Lizzie snapped back, meeting my glare head on with an even angrier one of her own. โStop letting that asshole walk all over you.โ
โHeโs not,โ I groaned, imploring her with my eyes to hear me.
โYes, he is!โ
โWhat in the name of Christ are you talking about?โ Gerard snapped, running a hand through his hair. โI congratulatedย ourย friend on getting her first job. Yeah,ย ourย friend. Last time I checked, that wasnโt a method of seduction. But you still somehow manage to fly off the handle!โ
โDonโt try to make out like Iโm crazy, Thor,โ Lizzie spat back. โWe all know what youโre doing here. Iโm just the only one with the balls to say it.โ
โIโm not trying to make you out to be crazy, Lizzie,โ Gerard shot back, eyes bulging. โI donโt need to, because the whole fucking world can see it plain as day.โ
โGibs!โ Patrick snapped. โThatโs too far, lad.โ
โNo,โ Lizzie countered heatedly. โWhat would be going too far is telling him that Peter Biggs saved the wrong child from the watโโ
โLa, la, la!โ Shannon sang out in a frantic tone, as she reached over and clamped a hand over Lizzieโs mouth. โWords stick, Liz. Please donโtย say it.โ
โLet her,โ Gerard demanded, while he leaned back in his seat and glared at her. โCome on, viper. Finish what you were going to say. Get it off your chest.โ
โDonโt,โ the rest of us begged in unison and then simultaneously held our breaths, waiting for all hell to break loose.
โI donโt need to say it,โ Lizzie finally replied, eyes locked on Gerard. โFrom the look on your face, you already know itโs true.โ
Shannon groaned, Patrick dropped his head in his hands, meanwhile my jaw damn near hit the floor.
โYou didย notย just say that, Lizzie Young,โ I whisper-hissed. โTell me you did not just say that!โ When she made no move to respond, I turned to the boy sitting beside me. โGerard.โ The boy that was climbing to his feet. โNo, Gerard, donโt โฆ just wait a minute, will you?โ
He didnโt wait.
He didnโt respond, either.
Instead, he stood up quietly and walked out.
He didnโt even slam the cafรฉ door behind him.
โThat was bad,โ Shannon groaned, still covering her head with her hands. โThat was so bad.โ
โYep,โ Patrick agreed calmly. โA total shitshow.โ
โYou need to apologize,โ I snapped, glowering across the table at Lizzie. โYou need to go out there and apologize to that boy.โ
โWhen hell freezes over.โ
โI mean it, Liz,โ I pushed, feeling furious. โRight this second.โ
โIโll tell you what, Claire,โ she shot back heatedly, โIโll apologize to him for his sister dying when he apologizes to me for mine!โ
โOh my God.โ I wanted to scream. โCaoimhe hasย nothingย to do with how you just spoke to him just now.โ
โCaoimhe hasย everythingย to do with everything,โ Lizzie choked out, tears filling her eyes. โEverything.โ
โYou and Gibsie have both lost your sisters,โ Shannon tried to reason with her by offering. โYou know how bad it hurts, Liz. It cripples youย daily. Thatโs how Gibsie feels, too.โ
โMaybe,โ she conceded, but her tone was still fully loaded with venom when she spat, โDifference is I had nothing to do with his sisterโs death and he had everything to do with mine!โ
โHow?โ Shannon urged. โHe was just a little boy when Caoimhe died, Liz. A little kid like the rest of us.โ
โAsk his brother.โ
โStepbrother,โ Feely interjected calmly.
โFine,โ Lizzie seethed, teeth grinding. โAsk hisย stepbrother.โ
โMark?โ
โAnd while youโre at it, ask why that monster was involved with my sister in the first place!โ Nostrils flaring, she spat, โAsk whose fault wasย that.โ
โNope. I canโt.โ Shaking my head, I threw my hands up in resignation and slid out of my seat. โI honestly canโt do this with you anymore. I know youโre a good person, Liz, or at least, I know thereโs a good person in there somewhere, but Iโm tired of being on the frontline defending your actions when I donโt agree with them.โ
โI never asked you to do that for me.โ
โYou didnโt have to, because thatโs what friends do, but itโs getting old and Iโm growing up.โ
โClaire, wait,โ Shannon called after me. โDonโt go. Letโs just sit down and talk this out.โ
โNo, you can talk to her. I need to not be near her right now, Shan,โ I called over my shoulder, as I made a beeline for the exit. Because if I didnโt get away from our friend, I would explode. โIโll call you later, okay?โ
