Chapter no 18

Taming 7 (Boys of Tommen, 5)

โ€œYou know, when you asked me for an old pallet from the farm, I should have known it was for one of your harebrained schemes,โ€ Feely declared. We were in my back garden after school, surrounded by power tools, saws, and pieces of chopped timber. โ€œThis is strange, Gibs. Even for you.โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s not strange,โ€ I argued, balancing a nail between my teeth, while I hammered another one into the wooden house Iโ€™d spent most of the evening crafting. โ€œItโ€™s the height of levelheadedness.โ€

โ€œCare to explain the method to this particular brand of madness?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s getting cold. Reggie is going to need someplace warm to hibernate.โ€

โ€œYou know, if you freed the poor creature, heโ€™d do it for himself.โ€

โ€œNot according to our vet, he wonโ€™t. Heโ€™s been handled too much. Reggie doesnโ€™t know that heโ€™s a hedgehog. He was only a baby when we rescued him. He wonโ€™t survive a winter in the wild.โ€

โ€œYou know wild hedgehogs carry diseases, donโ€™t you?โ€ he pointed out, leaning against the closed patio door. โ€œYou really shouldnโ€™t keep him on your lap like that, lad.โ€

โ€œFor the last time, Reginald isnโ€™t diseased!โ€ I snapped. โ€œHeโ€™s as clean as a whistle. Same as me.โ€

โ€œSame as you?โ€ he laughed. โ€œIs that supposed to reassure me?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t mind him, son,โ€ I grumbled, returning my attention to the task at hand, while my little buddy burrowed into the fabric of my gray sweatpants. โ€œDaddyโ€™s going to build you a better hibernaculum than any of the other hedgehogs.โ€

โ€œAt least use gloves when youโ€™re handling him.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s with the judgement, Patrick?โ€ I snapped. โ€œI asked you to helpย me because youโ€™re the best of us at woodwork and youโ€™ve always been the least judgmental of the lads. Or so Iย thought.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not judging you, Gibs,โ€ he chuckled, coming to sit down on the patio beside me. โ€œHere.โ€ Taking the hammer out of my hand, he retrieved a nail and set to work on the felt roof. โ€œLetโ€™s make sure yourย sonโ€™sย hibernaculum is waterproof.โ€

I grinned. โ€œThanks, lad.โ€

โ€œQuestion,โ€ he said a little while later, when the felt roof had been neatly tacked into place. โ€œHave you noticed anything out of the ordinary with Liz?โ€

โ€œLiz?โ€ I turned to gape at him. โ€œAs in viper Liz?โ€

He nodded.

โ€œHell no, I havenโ€™t noticed anything out of the ordinary with her. In fact, I try my best not to notice her at all,โ€ I replied, appalled that he would ask me such a question. โ€œIn case it skipped your attention, lad, that witch hates my guts.โ€

โ€œCome on, Gibs,โ€ he tried to reason. โ€œDonโ€™t call her that. She was your friend once.โ€

โ€œYeah, and look where it got me,โ€ I shot back defensively. โ€œDirectly in the firing line of her poisonous tongue.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not defending anything sheโ€™s done to you down through the years,โ€ he said carefully. โ€œBecause sheโ€™s been well out of order.โ€

โ€œBut?โ€ I bit out, just knowing there was aย butย to this bullshit.

โ€œBut I really feel like thereโ€™s a conversation that needs to happen between you both. One thatโ€™s long overdue.โ€

I simply stared, unblinking, unable to form any words to respond to this bullshit.

โ€œCome on, Gibs,โ€ he pushed. โ€œTry to see where Iโ€™m coming from here.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t,โ€ I replied, placing Reggie inside his little house. โ€œProbably because Iโ€™m blinded by the sheer height of betrayal!โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s not a bad person,โ€ he called after me when I stood up and moved for the door. โ€œSheโ€™s just hurt.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re all hurt, lad,โ€ I snapped, yanking the patio door open and storming inside. โ€œSome of us donโ€™t take it out on everyone else.โ€

โ€œYou know what they say Mark did to Caoimhe,โ€ Feely said, following me inside a thankfully empty kitchen. โ€œI know heโ€™s not your brother, Gibs โ€“ I know that, okay. But she believes the rumors. She thinks heโ€™s responsible and if you and Liz have a conversation about it, I think it might really help her to heal.โ€

โ€œThinks!โ€ I snapped, slamming the fridge door closed. โ€œLast time I checked, thinking something wasnโ€™t the same as knowing something, Patrick!โ€

โ€œCome on, Gibs,โ€ he tried to plead. โ€œWeโ€™ve all heard the rumors, lad.โ€ Leaning against the island, he added, โ€œHalf the town thinks he raped her.โ€

โ€œApparently not the half that contain the Gards,โ€ I shot back, bristling. โ€œBecause they cleared him after questioning!โ€

โ€œItโ€™s hard to prove a dead girlโ€™s story.โ€

โ€œAgreed,โ€ I countered, feeling cold to the bone. โ€œEspecially when itโ€™s complete bullshit.โ€

โ€œSo, you think Markโ€™s completely innocent in all of it?โ€ he argued. โ€œYou donโ€™t feel like he has any hand in Lizzieโ€™s sister jumping off the bridge that night?โ€

โ€œIย didnโ€™tย say that,โ€ I snapped, hating the tremor in my voice.

โ€œExactly!โ€ he urged. โ€œBecause you know as well as she does that thereโ€™s something to this. Come on, Gibs, think about it, lad. Thereโ€™s no smoke without fireโ€”โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ I roared back at him. โ€œNo, I wonโ€™t think about it, Patrick, because I donโ€™t fucking want to, okay? Because Iโ€™m done with thinking about it. Done with being blamed for it. Iโ€™m just fucking done, okay!โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ He held his hands up, brows furrowed. โ€œOkay, Gibs, relax. I wonโ€™t bring it up again. Just take it down a notch, lad.โ€

โ€œThanks for helping build Reggieโ€™s hibernaculum,โ€ I replied flatly, moving for the back door.

โ€œWait, Gibs โ€ฆ โ€

โ€œYou should go now,โ€ I deadpanned, closing the patio door before he could follow me outside.

โ€œWord on the street is you threw Feely out on his ass earlier,โ€ a familiar voice said a little while later.

โ€œWord on the street would be right.โ€

โ€œCare to explain?โ€

โ€œNope.โ€

โ€œSo, youโ€™re still pissed?โ€

โ€œYep.โ€

โ€œShit.โ€ Closing my bedroom door behind him, Hugh strolled over to the beanbag in my room and sank down. โ€œHe must have done something fairly terrible to get on your bad side, Gibs.โ€

โ€œOh please.โ€ Rolling my eyes, I tossed my rugby ball into the air before catching it. โ€œDonโ€™t pretend like Feely didnโ€™t rush across the street to fill you in the minute I told him to fuck off. You two are as thick as thieves.โ€

โ€œKind of like you and Cap?โ€

โ€œExactly like me and Cap,โ€ I agreed. โ€œWhich is how I know he went straight to you with the drama.โ€

It wasnโ€™t that deep with Feely. By tomorrow, the whole thing would be long forgotten about, but for now, I was still in my feels.

โ€œI wasnโ€™t going to deny it,โ€ Hugh replied calmly. โ€œI just figured Iโ€™d come and check on you.โ€

โ€œWhy bother wasting your time?โ€ I replied, spinning the ball out once more. โ€œIโ€™m always okay.โ€

โ€œTrue,โ€ Hugh said in an even tone. โ€œExcept for when youโ€™re not.โ€

I didnโ€™t have an answer to that, so I remained silent.

โ€œGibs.โ€ A heavy sigh escaped him. โ€œTalk to me, lad.โ€

โ€œAbout what?โ€

โ€œMaybe you could start with whatever it is that makes you shut down like this.โ€

Pulling up on my elbow, I turned to look at him. โ€œDo Iย lookย shutย down?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ he shot back without a hint of hesitation. โ€œGiven the fact that Iโ€™ve known you every day of your life, I would say yeah, youโ€™re clearly in shutdown mode.โ€ He kept his brown eyes locked on mine when he said, โ€œThis is about Lizzie.โ€

My blood ran cold. โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œCome on, Gibs.โ€

โ€œJesus Christ.โ€ Frustration filled my chest to the point where I wanted to rip the four walls off this fucking house. โ€œWhy does everything have to be aboutย her?โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œAccording to you and Feely it does.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Hugh tried to reason. โ€œFeely told me what happened. What he was trying to do, and I get it. I know sheโ€™s not been the best person to you in the past, but โ€ฆ โ€

โ€œListen, lad, I get that you and Pa have had this weird attachment to the viper since forever, but I donโ€™t want a damn thing to do with it,โ€ I quickly cut him off by saying. โ€œIโ€™m not her friend, Iโ€™m not her punching bag, Iโ€™m not her fucking anything. So, whatever issues sheโ€™s having, donโ€™t come around here projecting them onto me, because in the words of Rhett Butler, frankly, I donโ€™t give a damn!โ€

Hugh was quiet for a long time before finally rising to his feet. โ€œYou care, Gibs.โ€ He moved for the door. โ€œYou donโ€™t want to care, but you do,โ€ he added quietly. โ€œSame as the rest of us.โ€

โ€œSame as you, more like.โ€

He didnโ€™t deny it.

โ€œYouโ€™re a glutton for punishment, Biggs,โ€ I called after him.

โ€œRight back at you, Gibson,โ€ he called back. โ€œNow, hurry your ass up and get out of your bad mood. Mamโ€™s setting the table for dinner.โ€

Instantly, my stomach was on high alert. โ€œWhatโ€™s on the menu?โ€

โ€œYour favorite.โ€

โ€œBacon and cabbage?โ€

โ€œWith roast potatoes.โ€

Dammit.
