Chapter no 17

Taming 7 (Boys of Tommen, 5)

โ€œOh my God. Oh my God! Look at his little foot.โ€

โ€œShh, Claire. Donโ€™t squeal. Youโ€™ll hurt his tiny ears.โ€

โ€œOops! Sorry.โ€ Slapping a hand over my mouth, I bounced from foot to foot, desperately trying to fight the urge to swipe the baby out of my bestieโ€™s arms and steal him for myself while Third Eye Blindโ€™s โ€œSemi-Charmed Lifeโ€ played on repeat on the nearby stereo. โ€œI think I love him.โ€

Almost one month had passed since we returned to Tommen, and all seemed to be well in the world again. Joey and Tadhg had returned from their suspensions, and aside from a few sketchy instances at the beginning of term, everything seemed to be running like clockwork for our little gang. Best of all, Gerard and I were still spending most of our time together โ€“ when he wasnโ€™t working out with Johnny, that was.

Shannonโ€™s adorable nephew was almost one month old, and this was my first time getting to meet the little guy โ€“ even though Iโ€™d been trying to get my hands on his chubby little cheeks since he came out of Aoifeโ€™s womb.

โ€œYou should smell him,โ€ Shan encouraged, as she cradled her nephew in her arms. Leaning in close, she took a whiff of his blond hair and moaned. โ€œHeโ€™s got that epic newborn baby smell.โ€

โ€œLiz, come here!โ€ Unable to tear my eyes off what had to be the cutest baby Iโ€™d ever seen in my life, I waved my hand around wildly, gesturing for her to join us. โ€œHeโ€™s so โ€“ shut the front door! Heโ€™s sucking his thumb.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ Shannon gushed excitedly.

โ€œIsnโ€™t that the most adorable thing youโ€™ve ever seen?โ€

โ€œSo adorable.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s a baby, guys.โ€ Sounding entirely uninterested, Lizzie remained on the couch in Joey and Aoifeโ€™s annex/apartment, not bothering to join us in our gushing. โ€œThatโ€™s what they do. They suck their thumbs.โ€

โ€œBut this baby is the best baby,โ€ I added, tracing AJโ€™s chubby cheek with my finger. โ€œI want one.โ€

โ€œMe too.โ€

โ€œYou two are disturbed.โ€

โ€œThanks, girls,โ€ Aoife said, reappearing from the bathroom with a towel wrapped around her hair and a fresh pair of pajamas on. She certainly looked a lot fresher than she had when weโ€™d arrived after school. What with her leaky nipples and AJโ€™s baby puke on her back.

โ€œI feel like I havenโ€™t showered alone in weeks,โ€ she added with a smile. โ€œIs AJ okay?โ€

โ€œWell, you sort of havenโ€™t,โ€ Shan replied. โ€œAnd yep, heโ€™s just as perfect as he was ten minutes ago.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I agreed, offering the stunning blonde a sympathetic smile. โ€œHow are you feeling?โ€

โ€œShe pushed an entire human being out of her body a month ago, Claire,โ€ Lizzie drawled. โ€œHow do you think sheโ€™s feeling?โ€

โ€œVagina,โ€ Ollie chimed in from his perch on the couch, where he was playing snake on Aoifeโ€™s phone. โ€œItโ€™s called a vagina.โ€

โ€œHey, good job, stud,โ€ Aoife praised, ruffling her boyfriendโ€™s little brotherโ€™s hair. โ€œYou are kicking ass with that speech therapist.โ€

โ€œThanks,โ€ he replied, beaming up at her like she hung the moon. โ€œWhenโ€™s Joe home?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s working late tonight.โ€

Ollieโ€™s face fell, but like the absolute queen she was, Aoife was quick to add, โ€œItโ€™s all good, Ols. You know heโ€™ll pop next door to say goodnight to the three of you before bed. Same as always.โ€

โ€œYou promise heโ€™s still better today?โ€ Ollie pushed, brown eyes wide and full of innocence. โ€œHeโ€™s not sick again?โ€

โ€œI promise,โ€ Aoife replied, though she had to clear her throat several times before adding, โ€œToday is another good day, Ols.โ€

I was quite certain that I felt my heart crack in my chest. This wasnโ€™t an everyday conversation that I was listening to. This orphan child was asking for reassurance that his heroin-addicted brother was still clean. From the girl whoโ€™d given birth to said brotherโ€™s baby only a few short weeks ago.

That poor kid.

That strong girl.

โ€œStop it,โ€ Lizzie, who had suddenly appeared by my side, whispered in my ear. Slipping a tissue into my hand, she nudged me towards the door. โ€œNot in front of the kid.โ€

Pretending that I had to answer my phone, I quickly pressed it to my ear and hurried outside, holding my breath the entire time.

When I had the door of the annex closed behind me, I choked out a sob and clutched my chest, as an array of different emotions battered my heart. โ€œOh God!โ€

โ€œYou alright there, Claire?โ€ Johnny asked, appearing in the garage doorway with a look of confusion etched on his face. I knew from spending countless hours at the manor this past summer that the garage housed a state-of-the-art home gym.

โ€œUh-huh,โ€ I choked out, using the tissue Liz gave me to blow my nose. โ€œItโ€™s just soย sad.โ€

โ€œSad,โ€ a little voice chimed in. It was only then I noticed the small boy clinging to Johnnyโ€™s legs. โ€œClaire sad.โ€

โ€œHi Sean,โ€ I sniffled, offering a bright smile to my bestieโ€™s youngest brother. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m not sad. Iโ€™m super happy.โ€

โ€œClaireโ€™s silly, isnโ€™t she?โ€ Johnny coaxed, scooping him up in his arms. โ€œBecause weโ€™re not supposed to cry when weโ€™re happy, are we? Hm? Tell her that sheโ€™s supposed to laugh.โ€

โ€œLaugh,โ€ Sean replied solemnly, and then he did the most adorable thing ever. He reached up and pulled at Johnnyโ€™s cheeks to make him smile. โ€œSee?โ€

Now, I did laugh. โ€œOh my God, you are just the cutest!โ€

โ€œDo me a favor, will ya, big man?โ€ Setting Sean back down, Johnnyย ruffled his curls before saying, โ€œRun inside and ask Dellie if Johnnyโ€™s dinner is ready.โ€

With his little chest puffed out, Sean nodded eagerly before bolting off in the direction of the back door.

โ€œIโ€™m so sorry,โ€ I blurted out when he was out of earshot.

โ€œYouโ€™re only human,โ€ Johnny replied, watching the preschooler like a hawk until he disappeared inside the manor. โ€œItโ€™s a lot to take in.โ€

โ€œIt just so heart-wrenching,โ€ I admitted, following him into the garage, feeling ridiculously emotional. โ€œHow do you handle it?โ€

โ€œWith these,โ€ he explained, pointing to the weights and gym equipment behind him. โ€œIt gets easier.โ€

โ€œUsually, Iโ€™m okay,โ€ I said. โ€œBut seeing Aoife and AJ, and then knowing everything they had to go through โ€ฆ โ€ My voice cracked and I had to press my tissue to my nose to stop it from dripping. โ€œAnd then Ollie was asking her if Joey was better, and Aoife could only tell him that he was better today โ€ฆ โ€ Choking out another sob, I batted my tears away. โ€œAnd then it hit me that Joeโ€™s never going to be fully better, is he? Because thereโ€™s no cure for his disease!โ€ Sniffling, I added, โ€œHeโ€™ll always be an addict, with no promise of anything beyondย today.โ€

โ€œYeah, Claire, he will.โ€

โ€œBut thatโ€™s so sad!โ€ I choked out, unable to stop the wail that escaped me. โ€œHeโ€™s trying so hard, with school and work and the baby! And theyโ€™ve been through so much! And Aoifeโ€™s so brave! And theyย stillย donโ€™t get any guarantees for the future!โ€

Sighing heavily, Johnny sank down on his weight bench and patted the space beside him. โ€œCome on.โ€

Wailing like a banshee, I slumped down beside him and dropped my head in my hands. โ€œWhy do bad things happen to good people?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know, Claire,โ€ he replied, patting my shoulder. โ€œI really donโ€™t.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s just soย shitty!โ€

โ€œYeah, it is,โ€ he agreed, offering me a bottle of water. โ€œBut the fact that Shan and the boys are here today, still standing, still breathing? Itโ€™s aย miracle in itself. As for Joey? Heโ€™s a force to be reckoned with. Iโ€™ve never seen a more resilient human in my life. Yeah, heโ€™ll always be an addict, but heโ€™s got a family in there worth staying sober for. A girl and a baby that not only would he fight to the death for, but he wants toย live for. So, fuck guarantees and donโ€™t bet against him. Heโ€™ll forge an epic future for Aoife and AJ, just like he forged a future for his siblings.โ€
