Chapter no 16

Taming 7 (Boys of Tommen, 5)

โ€œHey, Gerard?โ€

โ€œYeah, Claire-Bear?โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s it mean?โ€

โ€œHm?โ€

โ€œLove?โ€ Rolling onto her belly, she rested her chin on her hand and beamed up at me. โ€œWhatโ€™s it mean?โ€

Grinning, I copied her moves and rolled onto my belly, facing her. โ€œItโ€™s what the grown-ups do when they get married.โ€

โ€œHm.โ€ Her blonde brows pulled together, and she licked the ice-cream off her chin before saying, โ€œHey, Gerard?โ€

โ€œHm?โ€

โ€œWhy do grown-ups get married?โ€

โ€œโ€™Cause they get in love with each other,โ€ I explained, taking a lick from my ice-cream before holding it out for her.

โ€œBut why do they get in love with each other?โ€ she asked, taking a lick of my cone. โ€œIs it fun?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s when you live in the same house as your best friend, and you have babies and a catโ€”โ€ I paused to lick my cone, before continuing โ€œโ€”and a big bed, and โ€ฆ โ€

โ€œAnd pillow fights?โ€

โ€œYep.โ€ I nodded. โ€œAnd you get to eat cake in bed with the same person forever and ever and ever.โ€

Her eyes grew really big. โ€œBut I donโ€™t want to marry anyone.โ€ Leaning closer, she licked my cone and smiled. โ€œExcept you โ€ฆ โ€

Laying on my side with my arm around Claire, I pulled my mind from the past and focused on the present.

Beautiful.

She was so fucking beautiful that it made my chest ache. Honest to God, looking at this girl for too long caused a physical ache to develop in my ribcage. Even the back of her head. That was all I could see from my current viewpoint, and still, my heart bucked wildly in response.

Even when she was sleeping, she dominated my thought process to the point where I couldnโ€™t resist the urge to shake her arm and wake her up, just so I could hear her voice.

โ€œClaire-Bear?โ€ I whispered in the darkness, feeling that familiar swell of anxious energy building up inside of me. โ€œAre you awake?โ€ Of course she wasnโ€™t. It was half past four in the morning, she was clearly sleeping like every other normal human, but I was selfish and needy. โ€œBabe?โ€

โ€œShh, Gerard,โ€ she half-moaned, half-purred. โ€œMm.โ€ Shifting around, she thrust her ass against me and snuggled deeper into the mattress. โ€œFive more minutes.โ€ Reaching up, she gripped my forearm with her hand, nails digging into my flesh and then retracting like a little kitten. โ€œIโ€™m just resting my eyes.โ€

I chuckled in the darkness, knowing that she was more awake than asleep.

โ€œShh.โ€ Twisting around to face me, she draped her thigh over my legs and snuggled into my side, using her cheek to nuzzle my bare chest. โ€œIโ€™m super tired.โ€

I smiled in the darkness. โ€œSay it again.โ€

โ€œMm, say what?โ€

โ€œSuper.โ€

โ€œShh.โ€

โ€œCome on, Claire-Bear.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œCome on, just once.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œJust say it.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause itโ€™s fucking adorable.โ€

โ€œFine,โ€ she huffed, reaching a hand up to pinch my nipple. โ€œSuper.โ€

โ€œFuck.โ€ I couldnโ€™t stop the laugh that escaped my lips. โ€œYouโ€™reย superย cute, do you know that?โ€

โ€œI was five,โ€ she grumbled, fully awake now. โ€œI thought I was being sophisticated using the wordย superย all the time.โ€

โ€œHey, the five-year-old version of you is still more sophisticated than the current-day version of me.โ€ Grinning, I added, โ€œYou still make that tiny whistle noise when you say it.โ€

โ€œNo, I donโ€™t,โ€ Claire huffed. โ€œThat whistle noise was an unfortunate temporary side effect of losing my baby teeth.โ€ Pulling up on her elbow, she smiled down at me. โ€œSee, perfectly formed adult teeth now, with zero whistling.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re so beautiful,โ€ I admitted, because, one, I had a problem keeping my mouth shut, and second, it was the truth. Iโ€™d never seen anything like her. โ€œI swear you shine even in the darkness.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re such a joker.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not joking.โ€

She studied my face for a long beat, clearly searching for the lie before blowing out a shaky breath and flopping back down on my chest. โ€œYou are so frustrating, Gerard Gibson.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ Swallowing deeply, I draped an arm around her and nodded. โ€œI know.โ€

โ€œTell me a story.โ€

I arched a brow. โ€œA story?โ€

โ€œMm-hm.โ€ Nodding, she yawned sleepily. โ€œItโ€™s the least you can do considering you woke me from an epic dream.โ€

โ€œYou were dreaming?โ€

โ€œI dream every night.โ€

Wow. Lucky her. โ€œWhat were you dreaming about?โ€

โ€œThe usual,โ€ she replied, cheek resting on my chest again.

โ€œWhich is?โ€

โ€œYou.โ€

My heart jackknifed in my chest. โ€œTell me about it.โ€

โ€œNope,โ€ she mumbled. โ€œYouโ€™re the one supposed to be telling me a story.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t think of a story.โ€

โ€œThen just talk,โ€ she encouraged sleepily. โ€œJust talk, Gerard. I want to hear your voice.โ€

โ€œTalk about what?โ€

โ€œUs,โ€ she whispered. โ€œTell me all the nice things.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t have good dreams when I sleep,โ€ I offered cautiously, trying to choose the right words, something that didnโ€™t come easily to me. โ€œBut whenever I daydream, youโ€™re the star of the show.โ€

โ€œI am?โ€

โ€œOf course.โ€

โ€œKeep going.โ€

โ€œI have a hard time concentrating,โ€ I offered, unsure if this was worth telling her, but sheโ€™d told me to talk, so I did. โ€œBut when Iโ€™m with you, I feel like I have my thinking cap on.โ€ Pondering, I folded one arm behind my head as I tried to form sentences out of my wandering thoughts. โ€œYouโ€™re the only person who can hold my attention. It shifts and wanders off on just about everyone else. But not you. Never you.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œYou already know this.โ€

โ€œMaybe, but itโ€™s nice to hear you say it.โ€

I thought about her words for a long moment before saying, โ€œI love you, Claire.โ€

โ€œI love you, too, Gerard.โ€ A shiver racked through her. โ€œA lot.โ€
