โHey, Gerard?โ
โYeah, Claire-Bear?โ
โWhatโs it mean?โ
โHm?โ
โLove?โ Rolling onto her belly, she rested her chin on her hand and beamed up at me. โWhatโs it mean?โ
Grinning, I copied her moves and rolled onto my belly, facing her. โItโs what the grown-ups do when they get married.โ
โHm.โ Her blonde brows pulled together, and she licked the ice-cream off her chin before saying, โHey, Gerard?โ
โHm?โ
โWhy do grown-ups get married?โ
โโCause they get in love with each other,โ I explained, taking a lick from my ice-cream before holding it out for her.
โBut why do they get in love with each other?โ she asked, taking a lick of my cone. โIs it fun?โ
โItโs when you live in the same house as your best friend, and you have babies and a catโโ I paused to lick my cone, before continuing โโand a big bed, and โฆ โ
โAnd pillow fights?โ
โYep.โ I nodded. โAnd you get to eat cake in bed with the same person forever and ever and ever.โ
Her eyes grew really big. โBut I donโt want to marry anyone.โ Leaning closer, she licked my cone and smiled. โExcept you โฆ โ
Laying on my side with my arm around Claire, I pulled my mind from the past and focused on the present.
She was so fucking beautiful that it made my chest ache. Honest to God, looking at this girl for too long caused a physical ache to develop in my ribcage. Even the back of her head. That was all I could see from my current viewpoint, and still, my heart bucked wildly in response.
Even when she was sleeping, she dominated my thought process to the point where I couldnโt resist the urge to shake her arm and wake her up, just so I could hear her voice.
โClaire-Bear?โ I whispered in the darkness, feeling that familiar swell of anxious energy building up inside of me. โAre you awake?โ Of course she wasnโt. It was half past four in the morning, she was clearly sleeping like every other normal human, but I was selfish and needy. โBabe?โ
โShh, Gerard,โ she half-moaned, half-purred. โMm.โ Shifting around, she thrust her ass against me and snuggled deeper into the mattress. โFive more minutes.โ Reaching up, she gripped my forearm with her hand, nails digging into my flesh and then retracting like a little kitten. โIโm just resting my eyes.โ
I chuckled in the darkness, knowing that she was more awake than asleep.
โShh.โ Twisting around to face me, she draped her thigh over my legs and snuggled into my side, using her cheek to nuzzle my bare chest. โIโm super tired.โ
I smiled in the darkness. โSay it again.โ
โMm, say what?โ
โSuper.โ
โShh.โ
โCome on, Claire-Bear.โ
โNo.โ
โCome on, just once.โ
โNo.โ
โJust say it.โ
โWhy?โ
โBecause itโs fucking adorable.โ
โFine,โ she huffed, reaching a hand up to pinch my nipple. โSuper.โ
โFuck.โ I couldnโt stop the laugh that escaped my lips. โYouโreย superย cute, do you know that?โ
โI was five,โ she grumbled, fully awake now. โI thought I was being sophisticated using the wordย superย all the time.โ
โHey, the five-year-old version of you is still more sophisticated than the current-day version of me.โ Grinning, I added, โYou still make that tiny whistle noise when you say it.โ
โNo, I donโt,โ Claire huffed. โThat whistle noise was an unfortunate temporary side effect of losing my baby teeth.โ Pulling up on her elbow, she smiled down at me. โSee, perfectly formed adult teeth now, with zero whistling.โ
โYouโre so beautiful,โ I admitted, because, one, I had a problem keeping my mouth shut, and second, it was the truth. Iโd never seen anything like her. โI swear you shine even in the darkness.โ
โYouโre such a joker.โ
โIโm not joking.โ
She studied my face for a long beat, clearly searching for the lie before blowing out a shaky breath and flopping back down on my chest. โYou are so frustrating, Gerard Gibson.โ
โYeah.โ Swallowing deeply, I draped an arm around her and nodded. โI know.โ
โTell me a story.โ
I arched a brow. โA story?โ
โMm-hm.โ Nodding, she yawned sleepily. โItโs the least you can do considering you woke me from an epic dream.โ
โYou were dreaming?โ
โI dream every night.โ
Wow. Lucky her. โWhat were you dreaming about?โ
โThe usual,โ she replied, cheek resting on my chest again.
โWhich is?โ
โYou.โ
My heart jackknifed in my chest. โTell me about it.โ
โNope,โ she mumbled. โYouโre the one supposed to be telling me a story.โ
โI canโt think of a story.โ
โThen just talk,โ she encouraged sleepily. โJust talk, Gerard. I want to hear your voice.โ
โTalk about what?โ
โUs,โ she whispered. โTell me all the nice things.โ
โI donโt have good dreams when I sleep,โ I offered cautiously, trying to choose the right words, something that didnโt come easily to me. โBut whenever I daydream, youโre the star of the show.โ
โI am?โ
โOf course.โ
โKeep going.โ
โI have a hard time concentrating,โ I offered, unsure if this was worth telling her, but sheโd told me to talk, so I did. โBut when Iโm with you, I feel like I have my thinking cap on.โ Pondering, I folded one arm behind my head as I tried to form sentences out of my wandering thoughts. โYouโre the only person who can hold my attention. It shifts and wanders off on just about everyone else. But not you. Never you.โ
โReally?โ
โYou already know this.โ
โMaybe, but itโs nice to hear you say it.โ
I thought about her words for a long moment before saying, โI love you, Claire.โ
โI love you, too, Gerard.โ A shiver racked through her. โA lot.โ
