Chapter no 65

Saving 6 (Boys of Tommen, 3)

โ€ŒHOME BY NOW

AUGUST 31ST 2004 JOEY

โ€œYOU NEED TO DO SOMETHING,โ€ย Shannon all but begged when I stepped through the front door on Tuesday evening after an extra- long training session with the minors in the city. โ€œPlease, Joe, please, you have to do something!โ€ With tear-filled eyes, she clung onto my arm like it was a life jacket. โ€œThereโ€™s so much blood.โ€

โ€œJesus Christ, calm down,โ€ I snapped, dropping my hurley and gear bag on the hallway tiles. โ€œWhatโ€™s after happening?โ€ I demanded, flustered, as I glanced around wildly. โ€œWhoโ€™s bleeding?โ€

Hiccupping out a sob, Shannon dragged me up the staircase, stumbling over her own legs, until we were on the landing.

โ€œIn there,โ€ she choked out, pointing to the bathroom. โ€œIn there, Joe.โ€

โ€œMam,โ€ I strangled out, chest-heaving, as I threw the bathroom door open and barreled inside. โ€œMam!โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not Mam,โ€ Shannon cried out. โ€œItโ€™sโ€”โ€œ

โ€œItโ€™s okay,โ€ a small voice said, and my legs gave way beneath me. โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s okay, Joe.โ€

No, no, no.

โ€œReally, Iโ€™m okay.โ€

Please God no.

Sinking to my knees on the blood encrusted floor, I just stared helplessly at the small child leaning over the side of the toilet, and the steady flow of blood coming from his nose.

Completely fucking reeling, I felt my head grow light as memories from what felt like a lifetime ago bombarded me.

โ€œITโ€™S OKAY, DAR,โ€ I wheezed, leaning heavily over the toilet bowl, as a mixture of vomit and blood continued to heave from my black and blue stomach. โ€œIโ€™m okay.โ€

โ€œJoey,โ€ Darren croaked out, as he knelt beside me and kept a steadying hand to my back. โ€œIโ€™m so sorry I wasnโ€™t here. I had training.โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter,โ€ I strangled out, as the pain of having my seven- year-old nose broken threatened to consume me. โ€œI donโ€™t care,โ€ I continued to say over and over, hoping that if I said it enough times, it might come true.

โ€œITโ€™S NOT ASย bad as it looks,โ€ Tadhg tried to comfort me by saying, as he spat a mouthful of clotted blood into the toilet bowl. He pressed a fresh wad of tissue to his clearly broken nose as the skin under his eyes already started turning a yellowish brown. โ€œReally, Joe, it doesnโ€™t even hurt.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s gone,โ€ Shannon hurried to fill in. โ€œI think he left because he knew you would be home soon.โ€

โ€œHome soon,โ€ I mumbled, shaking my head.

โ€œYeah,โ€ she replied softly. โ€œYouโ€™re usually home by now.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry that I wasnโ€™t here to protect you,โ€ I heard myself whisper, numb to the bone, as I watched him churn in pain. โ€œI hadโ€ฆtraining.โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter,โ€ Tadhg replied, giving me a horrible taste of Deja vu. โ€œI donโ€™t care.โ€

โ€œWhat happened?โ€ I strangled out, feeling my heart hammer violently in my chest. โ€œWhat the fuckย happened, Tadhg?โ€

โ€œDad hit Shannon,โ€ Tadhg bit out. โ€œSo, I hit Dad.โ€ He spat out another globber of bloodied snot. โ€œDad hits harder.โ€

โ€œJesus Christ,โ€ I choked out, staggering to my feet, when a surge of panic rocketed through me. โ€œOllie and Sean?โ€œ

โ€œAre in your room listening to music,โ€ Shannon hurried to say. โ€œI hope thatโ€™s okay. Itโ€™s the only place they feel safe.โ€

It wasnโ€™t okay.

None of this was okay.

Iโ€™d been knocked on my ass again, and I was losing the will to get back up on my feet.

โ€œAre you staying home tonight?โ€ Shannon asked. โ€œOr do you have plans with Aoife?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I replied, pulling my phone out of my pocket and quickly unlocking the screen. โ€œI donโ€™t have any plans.โ€

Joey: Change of plans. Canโ€™t meet up tonight. Iโ€™ll see you at school tomorrow.

Molloy: Absolutely unacceptable, Joseph. Iโ€™m outraged. Molloy: Joke. Hope everythingโ€™s okay?

Joey: All good. See you in the morning.

Molloy: Okay.

Joey: I donโ€™t love you. x

Molloy: I donโ€™t love you back. <3

Sliding my phone back into my pocket, I pushed all thoughts of Molloy out of my mind and got down to the business of cleaning up my parentsโ€™ mess.
