AUGUST 31ST 2004 JOEY
โYOU NEED TO DO SOMETHING,โย Shannon all but begged when I stepped through the front door on Tuesday evening after an extra- long training session with the minors in the city. โPlease, Joe, please, you have to do something!โ With tear-filled eyes, she clung onto my arm like it was a life jacket. โThereโs so much blood.โ
โJesus Christ, calm down,โ I snapped, dropping my hurley and gear bag on the hallway tiles. โWhatโs after happening?โ I demanded, flustered, as I glanced around wildly. โWhoโs bleeding?โ
Hiccupping out a sob, Shannon dragged me up the staircase, stumbling over her own legs, until we were on the landing.
โIn there,โ she choked out, pointing to the bathroom. โIn there, Joe.โ
โMam,โ I strangled out, chest-heaving, as I threw the bathroom door open and barreled inside. โMam!โ
โItโs not Mam,โ Shannon cried out. โItโsโโ
โItโs okay,โ a small voice said, and my legs gave way beneath me. โNo.โ
โItโs okay, Joe.โ
No, no, no.
โReally, Iโm okay.โ
Please God no.
Sinking to my knees on the blood encrusted floor, I just stared helplessly at the small child leaning over the side of the toilet, and the steady flow of blood coming from his nose.
Completely fucking reeling, I felt my head grow light as memories from what felt like a lifetime ago bombarded me.
โITโS OKAY, DAR,โ I wheezed, leaning heavily over the toilet bowl, as a mixture of vomit and blood continued to heave from my black and blue stomach. โIโm okay.โ
โJoey,โ Darren croaked out, as he knelt beside me and kept a steadying hand to my back. โIโm so sorry I wasnโt here. I had training.โ
โIt doesnโt matter,โ I strangled out, as the pain of having my seven- year-old nose broken threatened to consume me. โI donโt care,โ I continued to say over and over, hoping that if I said it enough times, it might come true.
โITโS NOT ASย bad as it looks,โ Tadhg tried to comfort me by saying, as he spat a mouthful of clotted blood into the toilet bowl. He pressed a fresh wad of tissue to his clearly broken nose as the skin under his eyes already started turning a yellowish brown. โReally, Joe, it doesnโt even hurt.โ
โHeโs gone,โ Shannon hurried to fill in. โI think he left because he knew you would be home soon.โ
โHome soon,โ I mumbled, shaking my head.
โYeah,โ she replied softly. โYouโre usually home by now.โ
โIโm sorry that I wasnโt here to protect you,โ I heard myself whisper, numb to the bone, as I watched him churn in pain. โI hadโฆtraining.โ
โIt doesnโt matter,โ Tadhg replied, giving me a horrible taste of Deja vu. โI donโt care.โ
โWhat happened?โ I strangled out, feeling my heart hammer violently in my chest. โWhat the fuckย happened, Tadhg?โ
โDad hit Shannon,โ Tadhg bit out. โSo, I hit Dad.โ He spat out another globber of bloodied snot. โDad hits harder.โ
โJesus Christ,โ I choked out, staggering to my feet, when a surge of panic rocketed through me. โOllie and Sean?โ
โAre in your room listening to music,โ Shannon hurried to say. โI hope thatโs okay. Itโs the only place they feel safe.โ
It wasnโt okay.
None of this was okay.
Iโd been knocked on my ass again, and I was losing the will to get back up on my feet.
โAre you staying home tonight?โ Shannon asked. โOr do you have plans with Aoife?โ
โNo,โ I replied, pulling my phone out of my pocket and quickly unlocking the screen. โI donโt have any plans.โ
Joey: Change of plans. Canโt meet up tonight. Iโll see you at school tomorrow.
Molloy: Absolutely unacceptable, Joseph. Iโm outraged. Molloy: Joke. Hope everythingโs okay?
Joey: All good. See you in the morning.
Molloy: Okay.
Joey: I donโt love you. x
Molloy: I donโt love you back. <3
Sliding my phone back into my pocket, I pushed all thoughts of Molloy out of my mind and got down to the business of cleaning up my parentsโ mess.
